In yesterday’s Iowa caucus, Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) finished fourth — behind senator Fred Thompson — receiving the support of only 13 percent of caucus-goers.
The traditional media, however, proclaimed McCain’s loss a triumph, as pundits quickly jumped in to herald McCain and his “fantastic” finish. ThinkProgress has compiled some lowlights from the media’s gushing television coverage:
MSNBC’s Mike Barnicle: “McCain’s stance on the war. They view it because of who he is and the eye contact during these town meetings. He’s the Babe Ruth of town meetings.”
Fox News’ Greta van Susteren: “I can’t think of anyone happier tonight than Sen. John McCain.”
Politico’s Mike Allen: “Tonight is a fantastic night for John McCain. … He’s one of the biggest winners of the night.”
Newsweek’s Jon Meacham: “To me, the great story about Sen. McCain is, when in doubt, give principle a try.”
Fox News’ Carl Cameron: “Inside Washington, he’s been a real maverick outsider.”
Watch it:
D-day cuts through the media spin:
The fluffing is almost embarrassing. Journalists all over the country are doing the walk of shame this morning.
Look, McCain finished FOURTH. A win for Huckabee is not a win for McCain. It’s a win for Huckabee. McCain may take New Hampshire by default, but nothing he did yesterday prepped him for that.
As Atrios said before the results poured in, “If McCain is rejected by 82% of caucusgoers he’s a ‘big hero‘” in the traditional media’s eyes. (He was ultimately rejected by 87%.) Matt Yglesias has more.
UPDATE: Right-wing pundit Bob Novak joins the McCain train, calling him the “big winner.”
Crikey. I give this spin a rating of F5.
January 4th, 2008 at 6:16 pmMcCain hasn’t stirred out of New Hampshire for months.
January 4th, 2008 at 6:19 pmOf course he stands to do well in a small state among hard core Yankees that he can drive around and visit all week.
This still smells like corporate desperation to me. The stench is so bad it is no longer deniable! McCain won? Mygod! how bad does that smell!?
January 4th, 2008 at 6:19 pmHe’s the Big Winner, according to the Big Liars.
January 4th, 2008 at 6:19 pmYep, war is peace, slavery is freedom, and ignorance is strength.
Oh, and McCain is the big winner…
January 4th, 2008 at 6:20 pmMan. Whatever these people are smoking…it must be good shit.
January 4th, 2008 at 6:20 pmAnd of course these right wing wacktoids will do anything to undercut some hick preacher from the backwoods…..
January 4th, 2008 at 6:21 pmMcCain McSchmain – this guy’s totally irrelevant to americans at this point. Calling him coming in 4th a “win” is gross hyperbole by media whores. The HUGE story today is how incredibly Obama did and the number of Democrats who turned out in Iowa. (Indy’s who joined them as well).
Gregor: Yes, As it was in Orwell’s fictional world, so the DoubleSpeak/Newspeak of Bush’s fantasy world has our own vocabularly bastardized to mean the opposite. It’s a brain screw on the american people. Thankfully, people are catching on and will no longer be duped by bullcrap.
January 4th, 2008 at 6:23 pmFortunately, no one gives a damn what these idiots say about McCain. Can you imagine any sentient being looking at the Iowa results and thinking, “Wow. McCain has got the momentum going now. I’m voting for the Maverick!”
None of these people want to face the notion of Huckelberry as the Republican candidate. No, no, no, not a real Religious Rightie! You never know what guys like that will do next!
So they generate utter and ridiculous crap like this, because their arrogance convinces them that people will swallow it. Even the dumbest hick on the planet will look at 13% and think, “Gawsh. That sucks!”
January 4th, 2008 at 6:24 pmThis is the reality of it: You can bundle up every single Repuke candidate and roll them into one package and they still couldn’t stand up to any of the Democratic candidates. The GOP is OVER.
January 4th, 2008 at 6:24 pmThis is pathetic. GOP leadership should lay down the law and tell Huckabee to quit. We need a serious candidate like Rudy or, maybe, McCain. Not a nutso like Huckabee.
Comment by Frank M — January 4, 2008 @ 6:22 pm
Damn right. No reason to let actual Republican voters choose a candidate. That would be like, uh, democracy.
Tough luck for the fascists, Frank. You may be stuck with a candidate that believes all the horsesh!t the Republics have been spinning for years.
January 4th, 2008 at 6:25 pmFluffers — excellent word for them.
January 4th, 2008 at 6:28 pmgummitch: The Gophers are between a rock and a hard place with their creepy gang of candidates. They have a wannabe guitar man-turned-bible thumper who hasn’t a clue about how this government runs or where the rest of the world is located – living in a total vacuum; a New York thug who was able to clean up the streets of NY with his mafioso connections and then had the taxpayers of NY foot the bill for his trysts with a mistress; a television actor who has about as much finesse and vitality as a toad; and then there’s Ron Paul…..the real GOP “maverick” if ever there was one. Paul doesn’t fit the Repuke mold though so they’re trying to eliminate him from the radar via Faux News.
This is the case of one desperate and diminishing party, once known as the GOP, who is losing voters by the droves because they can’t get out of their own way and continue to dig themselves in even deeper.
As I see it, this is a definite ONE PARTY ELECTION. The republicans don’t have a shred of a hope in 08.
January 4th, 2008 at 6:28 pmThis is incredible – only in Republican bizarro world would this be interpreted as a “big win” for McCain.
January 4th, 2008 at 6:29 pmThe pundits have their orders – Huckabee cannot win; stop him. They are required to spin this into a success for McCain.
Someone else can explain why Huckabee is so despised by his party leaders.
I know he is a Jesus freak who gets personal messages from God; a person who denies science because it doesn’t fit into his version of 6-days-creation; a person who thinks women should be subservient to men; an adult who still has trouble with geography and who doesn’t keep up with current events. He is totally unsuited to be president – but that didn’t stop the party from instlaling GWB twice – so what’s the deal with Huckleberry?
hey zooey! I like that – but remember those peanut butter and fluff sandwiches?? FLUFFER-NUTTERS might be even more apropos.
January 4th, 2008 at 6:29 pmI once heard that fluffing was a delicate term for breaking wind….
January 4th, 2008 at 6:29 pmPerhaps this is the beginning of the Republicans attempting to pull together behind the only candidate they think could stand a chance against the Democrat who will ultimately emerge. Clinton is a woman and she’ll feminize us all!! Obama has a scary terrorist middle name!! Edwards has a really spendy haircut and he’s never been a POW!!
I looooooooooove the desperation in the air…
January 4th, 2008 at 6:31 pmMarie: The GOP knows that Dinkleberry’s a loose canon – one whom they might not be able to control due to his level of fanaticism. He could awaken one morning and tell the world that the devil is actually George Bush. One never knows what may fall from his lips.
January 4th, 2008 at 6:31 pmThis is all very predictable. Edwards comes in second, 6 points behind Obama and “he’s through.” Clinton comes in a close third, 7 points behind and that tired old fixer Andrea Mitchell calls it a “stinging rebuke.”
McCain comes in over 20 points behind and it’s a “victory!!!” Romney comes in 15 points behind and “he still in it!!!”
Folks, we’ve seen this movie before. We see it every four years. We just have to keep talking about it, keep sending letters, keep letting them understand that we see them working.
January 4th, 2008 at 6:32 pmFrank M: And that’s the very first thing you and I agree upon – Huck’s all of the above but the last one is downright frightening. He is certificably nuts!
The first portion of your post, however, couldn’t be farther from the truth. In this election, the power structure will be handed back to the people where it justly belongs in this democracy. If Obama picks up Edwards as his veep, Edwards will cut the fascism at the jugular and immediately. There will never be a continuation of this path of destruction hatched and carved by the Bush administration ever again in this country or it will be it’s doom. That’s undeniable.
January 4th, 2008 at 6:33 pmIt’s fun watching the GOP field pretend they aren’t Republicans who will eventually need to convince America that Republicans are the one’s who can fix Bush’s Republican mess. McCain’s ass is still sore from the reaming Rove gave him in 2000 in SC.
January 4th, 2008 at 6:34 pmPlease don’t respond to a troll who proudly thinks that “the cause” and “the party” are more important than the consitutional system and the country. He might as well be a frickin Stalinist.
January 4th, 2008 at 6:34 pmThis is pathetic. GOP leadership should lay down the law and tell Huckabee to quit. We need a serious candidate like Rudy or, maybe, McCain. Not a nutso like Huckabee.

January 4th, 2008 at 6:35 pmCol. Jack: Can you believe it?? I find it fascinating that the largest corporate whores (the mainstream media) have become so transparent that they haven’t given ANY air time (except CNN) to the #2 Democrat yet give full air time (bullshit time) to the Repuke #4. Do they really think people can’t see them for what they are??
I’d love to see an Obama/Edwards or Edwards/Obama ticket. It would known the corporate fascist empire out into left field and be the one,two punch which will turn the lights out on the GOP forever.
January 4th, 2008 at 6:35 pm“Inside Washington, he’s been a real maverick outsiderâ€
Wha?
The inanity in the media is almost hard to believe. What in the world does this comment even mean?
Is that sort of like “this ain’t over ’til it’s over”?
Then again, Fox watchers probably did nod in agreement and will parrot this line certain they sound informed, no doubt….
January 4th, 2008 at 6:36 pmBesides, why isn’t the media talking about McCain’s cancer?? It’s because he wouldn’t last a term of 4 years, that’s why, with what his diagnosis is.
January 4th, 2008 at 6:36 pmI’ve noticed that the “librul media” has been avoiding the real story from Iowa. Dems outnumbered Reps by nearly 2-1. And Iowa is a fairly “Red” state.
The GOP is awakening to the fact they are in serious trouble. If this trend (2-1 margin) continues through “big Tuesday” the Goopers will be jumping off buildings.

I disagree Frank. As much idealism as they may have, they still need their jobs. I doubt very much any ‘mid-level’ anybodies are going to chance getting into trouble by maintaining the road map you described. They will be alone in a sea of new faces and new ideas.
Once Bush and his enforcers are gone, I suspect most everybody will simply make the necessary changes to their outlook and carry on. Most of those mid-level folks probably just went along with the flow because it was easier than fighting all the Bush appointees.

True! But, weird things happen in politics and anger is unpredictable. Now is the time to turn up the heat and the MSM won’t do it for us. That being said, we most likely will end up with an election which is, virtually, uncontested. BTW, the huge Dem turnout is a positive indication for congressional races too. I think that chances for a major butt-whipping are pretty good.
January 4th, 2008 at 6:58 pmNovak is a blowhard, but if you read his article (Which I don’t honestly recommend. I’ll summarize so you don’t have to.) then you’ll see that he says McCain is the “winner” of the night because it was so damaging to Romney.
Overall, I would rate this article by Novak about a million times less damaging to national security than the one in which he outed a CIA agent working clandestinely trying to get information on the WMD programs throughout the Middle East.

January 4th, 2008 at 7:03 pmPay no attention to Frank. He has no idea how things work. Um, those “mid-level loyalists” have already jumped ship. Where do you think all the “leaks” are coming from? They are coming from “mid-level loyalists” who want there to be a country/government after Bush. Plus, those “mid-level loyalists” don’t want to end up swinging by their necks. When will the DLC wake up and realize Americans hate this war and they hate empire.
1. They will never “wake up.” They are the voice of corporate America, Democratic version.
2. Soon they will no longer control the Democratic Party. Their time of glory is passed (past, the 90s.)
3. They will no longer be the voice of the Democratic Party (unless Hillary gets elected.)
4. Their numbers and influence are shrinking as more true left of center Democrats challenge them in the primaries.

Either of them would have a stronger EPA, either would cooperate with international treaties and neither of them would have attacked Iraq for no reason. Can we get a grip? Neither of these two, who are the most conservative of Dems right now, are even close to Bush and Cheney.
January 4th, 2008 at 7:27 pmMarcus: “I’ve noticed that Obama and Clinton follow Edwards on most issues.”
I think Edwards has been pulling Obama to the left. Obama’s rhetoric has been getting more and more Edwardsy which is a good thing, because I don’t think Edwards is going to be able to go the distance. He’s always been my favorite.

They are both corporatists, imperialists and empire builders.”
Bullshit. That kind of thinking is how we got Bush. In fact, the more I see posts like yours, the more I think that sleazy conservatives are posing as disaffected lefties and attempting to syphon off potential voters for the eventual Democratic nominee. Go ahead and vote for whomever the Communist Party nominee fields this year. It’s a free country. If you want to be completely irrelevant, that’s your choice. But don’t try to act like an Obama administration would act like Cheney and his sleazy band of war criminals. That’s just unmitigated bullshit.

January 4th, 2008 at 7:51 pmSorry, but I’m just sick of that absolutist nonsense. In 2000, I had friends who gave me that “lesser of two evils” crap with Gore. That’s part of why we’ve had 8 years of Bush. I don’t care if you vote for the Green or the Socialist Workers’ Party nominee or the Party of God or the Libertarian, but stop pretending there is no difference between Dems and repubes. At best it’s silly, black and white adolescent thinking and at worst, it’s a dishonest attempt to spread disaffection among potential Democratic voters. I’m just not buying it. But, have a nice weekend, everyone. I look for the Dems to rout repubes this year, end the modern libertarian/conservative movement, heavily wound the repube party and start a new era of progressive liberal policies similar to the early 20th century and the ’30’s. Let’s rock!
January 4th, 2008 at 7:52 pmIowa was not a good night for John McCain. The last time when he won Iowa he won based on the support of independent voters. This time around something like 70% of the independent voters caucused with the Democrats. I fail to see how that is good news for McCain.
Anyone who can say that the MSM leans left with a straight face has to be a sociopath.
January 4th, 2008 at 7:55 pmcLara, I’m not sure who you think you’re fooling, but you’re definitely not fooling me. I would say nice try, but it really wasn’t that slick. And, like I say, if you’re really not fooling, then good luck with being completely irrelevant this year. Stand back, feel good about yourself and watch the action as a bystander. It’s your choice and you’re free to make it.
January 4th, 2008 at 7:56 pmThis is pathetic. GOP leadership should lay down the law and tell Huckabee to quit. We need a serious candidate like Rudy or, maybe, McCain. Not a nutso like Huckabee.
Comment by Frank M
In Francine’s world, the GOP leadership can say jump and the person they are talking to will say “how high”. Maybe Huckabee isn’t playing their game Francine. Personally I hope that whacko Huckabee gets the nomination. He will be sooooo easy to beat.
January 4th, 2008 at 7:57 pmI am all for a Huckabee candidacy. I mean how much more screwball, and fringe can you get?
January 4th, 2008 at 8:01 pm#11: You seriously think that the vote will mean anything? It doesn’t matter who’s the next president. The roadmap has been laid out by the current administration and it’s going to get enforced by the mid-level loyalists in all the federal institutions – the ones that are not political appointees and cannot therefore be fired when the administration changes.
The reason why the Huckster bothers me because 1) he’s not a GOP insider, 2) he’s hurting the image of the party and 3) he’s nuts.
Comment by Frank M
Wow Francine, that’s pretty out there even for you. You actually think that low-level flunkies are going to be running our government once a Democrat takes over? You make a claim like that and you call Huckabee nuts! It’s you that has gone around the bend Francine.

From your post, it seems to me that you rather vote for somebody, whoever, is the most likely to win, than vote for somebody you would like to win. Is that so? Furthermore, Hillary stood firmly against the invasion of Iraq? Even more, did you stand against the invasion of Iraq in March 2003? Did you support going into Iraq? These are relevant questions looking at how much you defend Hillary…just because you don’t want another Bush?!
Well, but indeed you have a point, the corporations choose their people and they show them to the general populations as “options” in our sacred democracy. The illusion of people exercising their power by an election is pitiful.
January 4th, 2008 at 8:24 pmI can’t even think of one. So it is not so much that the two groups are the same, it is that the REpukes USE the Dem for cutting their politcal teeth, and then they sell out to the monied interest of the REpukikkkan party.

I don’t know what to make of the direction of the parties after last night. Huckabee?? C’mon. Again it is just Iowa though.
Had Edwards done better I’d say the Progressive/Far left wing of the Democrats is in ascendancy, but the Dems are much more likely to nominate Obama or Clinton. I think Obama is feigning DLC sympathy more than he believes it. I really think he is the most progressive candidate with an actual shot.
BTW, I don’t think it is bad that the middle 10-20% of each party is ideologically sympatico. It is that centrist group that allows compromise to occur and government to function.

That’s quite a list. Do you notice how many of them are “Dixiecrats” who broke with the Democratic party based, largely, on civil rights issues? Heck, 40 years ago most of today’s Republican candidates would have called themselves “Democrats”.
Isn’t there an old saying, something like; “If I stepped on one of them I’d burn my soiled shoes”?

An extremely salient point and one that goes a long way to explaining why African-Americans are so overwhelmingly Democratic when it was the Democratic Party that not only led the Secession movement in defense of slavery but more recently oversaw the Jim Crow south.

It has been said that candidates court the fringe in primaries and court the center in the general election.
What I find shocking is that anyone is buying into the existence of a “far left” wing of the Democratic party. Even Edwards is about as “far left” as my right arm.
Heck, Hillary is more “conservative” than most conservatives. But, BillO and the other talking heads need to dehumanize someone and she’s “the chosen one”. It’s actually rather amusing. I get a good chuckle every time I hear, “Hillary Clinton and the far left”.
January 4th, 2008 at 9:00 pmTo today’s right, Nixon would be a communist.

Thanx. Though it’s fairly common knowledge, in my age group, that the party changed after the Dixiecrats put (R) after their names. For that matter, Northern and Southern Democrats never did get along. Especially after a certain Catholic President and his successor.

January 4th, 2008 at 9:09 pmMcCain takes a wide stance on the Iraq occupation surge…when he’s in a public bathroom stall he toe taps for another ’surger’ to expand the occupation.
January 4th, 2008 at 9:11 pmAnd, just a reminder, the important fact about yesterday’s caucus is the overwhelming Democratic turnout. Almost 2-1 in a fairly “Red” state!
Lot’s and lot’s of Republicans are busy updating their resumes and dusting off their law degrees.
January 4th, 2008 at 9:12 pmHow can this be viewed as a win for McCain on any level? Much of his hope in New Hampshire is based on his ability to attract independent voters. So, how did McCain do with independents in Iowa. While I don’t know the exact answer I do know that he was trounced by both Obama and Paul, possibly Edwards. No me this looks like the end of the line for McCain. New Hampshire will just be the final nail in the coffin. Don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out John.

I’m not so certain of that. Iowans, bless their hearts, don’t like “uppity” women or New Yorkers. The shear numerical advantage, should the trend continue, means that few Republicans will be elected to the House/Senate.
I think the Dems could nominate a pack of rabid skunks and still achieve a “super-majority”. That’s an unsettling thought, but, I think that we need to risk it in order to start fixing Bushco’s mess.

CHUCK TODD, NBC NEWS POLITICAL DIRECTOR: Well, I think, [...]
I mean, look, if Obama finishes second to Edwards, he‘s got the resources to keep going. And he beats Clinton in New Hampshire, you know, you see how this whole scenario could play itself out.
So—but, of all three, you know, she needs this victory the least. I mean, look, this was the campaign that eight months ago thought about skipping this thing. My guess is that some of them wish that they had skipped this thing. This never was going to be an easy state for them.
So, I think that, yes, I think they—they think that they can pivot from losing. But I will tell you, this inevitability thing, what message is it going to send to the rank-and-file Clinton donor in California, in Florida who really, you know, hasn‘t really tuned in, doesn‘t know how tough Iowa really was, and they wake up and find out she lost? Will they start…
(CROSSTALK)
MATTHEWS: Yes. What about them, who have been told by the higher-ups in the campaign, don‘t worry; the worst that will happen is that Edwards will win?

January 4th, 2008 at 10:48 pm“what a bunch of hooey. those radicals over there have always hated the Clintons, so this is no surprise, but that was no crushing defeat, either. it was certainly a crushing defeat of Huckabeebee, but Bill Clinton had only 3% of the Iowa vote in 92, and ended up crushing GHW Bush. While I’m not favoring Hillary, I know that only fools will count her out this early, after one white-bread caucus in the middle of nowhere, which will be forgotten in two weeks.”
Comment by Lefty Patriot
I agree that it was not as earth shattering as the Hilary haters make it out to be. I am a DLC hater. I want them DEAD, DEAD, DEAD. If Hillary repudiated them tomorrow, I would be hillary backer.
It is REALLY a good sign for everyone to have people who are leftys, and supposedly the love and peace group, stand up and kick the shit out of some of them. I can’t wait to lay waste to Rudy. Oh Man will that be fun. Rudy 911illani

January 4th, 2008 at 10:56 pmYour misogyny is showing. Try discussing the topic on the site instead of making insulting comments towards women. You assume I’m a woman by my handle. What does that say about you.

January 4th, 2008 at 10:58 pmZoo,
Banning is not just done to trolls here on TP. I have been banned before, And as I write this maybe this will be the last I can post. I have been:
Bush is a Traitor
Boddhitsattva
among others.
But got banned for making inflamatory posts regarding things I want to do to Bush, NSA or others.
So maybe the term “banned” is not all it cracks up to mean.
I am sure this will kill me here. Maybe ,maybe not. I am staying on my meds, I promise.

January 4th, 2008 at 11:16 pmcLAra, one acn only use the “ad hominem” position if they are actually in an argument. Someone countering ones statement “I like blue” with “you are stupid and a moron” is not an ad hominem attack. There was no argument or debate happening. If after the other person said, well I like yellow, and you are stupid and a moron, THEN you can claim ad hominem attack. At least that is the way I view it.

Well, to be fair, you did mention McCain (the subject of the thread) in your first post. The second?
A real debate – Ron Paul vs Kucinich. The Iraq war issue would already be decided since both are against it. Empire would be off the table from the start.
Which leaves the important issues – Health care, social security, patriot act, decrrminalization of drugs, elimination of the DEA
Comment by cLara — January 4, 2008 @ 6:37 pm

Though, for the record, I and others politely answered and you simply repeated yourself. Here’s my take, again. While it would be interesting to see a Paul vs Kucinich debate, it’s not likely to happen. In fact, it’s so unlikely, it doesn’t really merit much discussion.

If I were you I wouldn’t bother. It is true what the others say, the thin skinned do not last here. You can’t stop some of the posters here from ad hominem attacks – you just can’t. It is a waste of everyone’s time to even try.
If you have thin skin, farewell. If you have thick skin, there are some damn smart people here and it is worth wading through the bullies venom. As far as defending others, no one can grow skin for another.
January 5th, 2008 at 1:26 amI read through the first 150 or so comments on the McCain thread on TP, focusing in on cLara.
In my opinion she is not a troll. Her posts were, quite frankly, on target. Then others started calling her names and she reacted. It was like watching progressives eating their own. I stopped at post 169 and skipped down to write this comment.
If we cannot accept diverse opinions that challenge our preconceived notions, then we are no better than the 30%ers who blindly follow an authoritarian leader.
cLara’s early posts did just that, and her criticisms of Obama and others are well-placed. Does my saying that thus make me a troll as well?
Will you begin calling me names, as many of you did cLara?

‘Every last piece’ destroyed
Adam Candeub, now a law professor at Michigan State University, said senior managers at the agency ordered that “every last piece” of the report be destroyed. “The whole project was just stopped – end of discussion,” he said. Candeub was a lawyer in the FCC’s Media Bureau at the time the report was written and communicated frequently with its authors, he said.

January 5th, 2008 at 6:02 amYou have to keep reminding yourself this is not fantasy: that truly dangerous men, such as Perle and Rumsfeld and Cheney, have power. The thread running through their ruminations is the importance of the media: “the prioritized task of bringing on board journalists of repute to accept our position”.
“Our position” is code for lying. Certainly, as a journalist, I have never known official lying to be more pervasive than today. We may laugh at the vacuities in Tony Blair’s “Iraq dossier” and Jack Straw’s inept lie that Iraq has developed a nuclear bomb (which his minions rushed to “explain”). But the more insidious lies, justifying an unprovoked attack on Iraq and linking it to would-be terrorists who are said to lurk in every Tube station, are routinely channeled as news. They are not news; they are black propaganda.

“Television is altering the meaning of “being informed” by creating a species of information that might properly be called disinformation… Disinformation does not mean false information. It means misleading information – misplaced, irrelevant, fragmented or superficial information – information that creates the illusion of knowing something, but which in fact leads one away from knowing.”

SENATOR GRAHAM CALLS FOR ACTION AGAINST AMERICANS WHO DISAGREE WITH BUSH
NAT PARRY, CONSORTIUM NEWS – Sen. Lindsey Graham suggested to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales a new target for the administration’s domestic operations — Fifth Columnists, supposedly disloyal Americans who sympathize and collaborate with the enemy. “The administration has not only the right, but the duty, in my opinion, to pursue Fifth Column movements,” Graham, R-S.C., told Gonzales during Senate Judiciary Committee hearings on Feb. 6.
“I stand by this President’s ability, inherent to being Commander in Chief, to find out about Fifth Column movements, and I don’t think you need a warrant to do that,” Graham added, volunteering to work with the administration to draft guidelines for how best to neutralize this alleged threat. “Senator,” a smiling Gonzales responded, “the President already said we’d be happy to listen to your ideas.”

“Most people prefer to believe that their leaders are just and fair, even in the face of evidence to the contrary, because once a citizen acknowledges that the government under which he lives is lying and corrupt, the citizen has to choose what he or she will do about it. To take action in the face of corrupt government entails risks of harm to life and loved ones. To choose to do nothing is to surrender one’s self-image of standing for principles. Most people do not have the courage to face that choice. Hence, most propaganda is not designed to fool the critical thinker but only to give moral cowards an excuse not to think at all.â€

January 5th, 2008 at 6:13 amMC CAIN’S ROLE IN THE COVERUP:
Liberty Cover-Up and John McCain’s Conscience
Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) is the “Conscience of the Senate.†Nevertheless, he won’t come clean about what really happened to the USS Liberty, at the hands of the Israelis.
One of the Navy bigwigs pushing hard for a sanitized Liberty inquiry was none other than Sen. McCain’s father, Admiral John S. McCain, Jr., Commander-in-Chief, Naval Forces Europe. He wanted the investigation done in less than a week. Boston said a “proper inquiry would take at least six months.†Admiral McCain also wouldn’t permit Admiral Kidd to travel to Israel or to contact any potential Israelis witnesses. In fact, according to Boston, the written affidavits of 60 witnesses from the Liberty itself, who were hospitalized at the time of the restricted Inquiry, were also excluded from the final report and not considered as part of the evidentiary record. Boston is convinced, too, that the Israelis’ machine-gunning of the Liberty’s lifeboats, while the crew was trying desperately to assist their colleagues that were seriously wounded, was “a war crime.â€

January 5th, 2008 at 6:17 amCLASS ACTION LAWSUIT – THE PEOPLE VS. THE GOP
The Republican Party entered into a LEGALLY BINDING CONTRACT with the people of America, who rewarded them with their votes and their trust.
Some observers cite the Contract With America as having helped secure a decisive victory for the Republicans in the 1994 elections
REPUBLICAN CONTRACT WITH AMERICA
FIRST, require all laws that apply to the rest of the country also apply equally to the Congress;
SECOND, select a major, independent auditing firm to conduct a comprehensive audit of Congress for waste, fraud or abuse;
THIRD, cut the number of House committees, and cut committee staff by one-third;
FOURTH, limit the terms of all committee chairs;
FIFTH, ban the casting of proxy votes in committee;
SIXTH, require committee meetings to be open to the public;
SEVENTH, require a three-fifths majority vote to pass a tax increase;
EIGHTH, guarantee an honest accounting of our Federal Budget by implementing zero base-line budgeting.
Further, we will instruct the House Budget Committee to report to the floor and we will work to enact additional budget savings, beyond the budget cuts specifically included in the legislation described above, to ensure that the Federal budget deficit will be less than it would have been without the enactment of these bills.
Respecting the judgment of our fellow citizens as we seek their mandate for reform, we hereby pledge our names to this Contract with America.
MC CAIN ADMITS GOP GUILT:
“Americans had elected us to change government, and they rejected us because they believed government had changed us,” the four-term senator said.
“We lost our principles and our majority. And there is no way to recover our majority without recovering our principles first.”
“Hypocrisy, my friends, is the most obvious of political sins. And the people will punish it,” McCain said, explaining that while Republicans were elected to reduce the size of government, they ended up increasing it “in the false hope that we could bribe the public into keeping us in office.”
THE REPUBLICAN PARTY IS IN BREACH OF CONTRACT WITH THE AMERICAN PEOPLE. MC CAIN ADMITS IT.
SUE THEM.

After Iowa: Is there room for both McCain and Giuliani?
By Shmuel Rosner, Haaretz Correspondents
excerpt:
A week ago we reported here on McCain’s progress, a by-product of America’s relative success in Iraq in recent months. But McCain doesn’t stick only to Iraq. He is the candidate insisting that the 2008 elections focus, ultimately, on foreign policy. “I know Pakistan. I know Israel,” he declared. “I know these countries”- meaning the problematic ones that demand special attention.
Three senators accompany McCain to the event: former presidential candidate Sam Brownback of Kansas, John Thune of South Dakota, and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, who tells the crowd how much world leaders respect McCain. He counts among his friends several Israelis, including Defense Minister Ehud Barak.
McCain left “my favorite Democrat” back in New Hampshire to carry on the good work. The mention of Joe Lieberman of Connecticut brings cheers from the crowd here in Iowa. Two weeks ago Lieberman announced his endorsement of the Republican McCain – a pretty astonishing move for someone who ran for vice president seven years ago on the Democratic ticket alongside Al Gore (as well as the first Jew to contend for that high office). And now the rumors that nobody confirms are spreading, and have reached all the way to senior officials in Jerusalem: Lieberman may also be McCain’s running mate.

January 5th, 2008 at 6:35 amEVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT WHY THE “MEDIA” BACKS MCCAIN IS RIGHT HERE – IN ISRAEL’S PAPER:
Jan 4, 2008 12:54 | Updated Jan 4, 2008 22:59
US Senator John McCain a favorite of Iowa Jews
When Arizona Senator John McCain took the stage the night before the first-in-the-nation caucuses to be held here Thursday night, he thanked several fellow senators who had joined him on stage to show their support. But then he also mentioned another senator — Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut — who wasn’t present because he was campaigning for him in New Hampshire.
McCain promotes his alliance with Lieberman, an independent senator and Orthodox Jew who campaigned in 2000 as the Democratic vice presidential nominee, to show off his bipartisan credentials, and his reference to his “favorite Democrat” before the conservative Iowa audience who had braved the cold to greet him elicited cheers.
“The fact that Lieberman affiliated with [McCain] brought him up with a certain quadrant of the Jewish community,” said a Jewish leader in Iowa in explaining Jewish support for McCain, though he also referred to support for other candidates, including former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

LIEBERMAN = TRAITOR TO AMERICA + TRAITOR TO DEMOCRATIC PARTY:
Earlier in the day, Connecticut Sen. Joseph Lieberman stumped for McCain on the Seacoast.
Lieberman, who was headed for a mid-afternoon rally in Portsmouth’s Market Square, said that if McCain wins next Tuesday, he can turn the campaign around because he’s “the most electable Republican nominee.”
Lieberman said he crossed party lines because he has worked with McCain for 19 years and believes in him.
“I know some Democrats are unhappy I’ve done this, but if you want to stand for something in our politics, you can’t make everyone happy. . .,” he said. “In the end, I’ve got to feel I’m doing something for our country. I think the Mac and the magic are back.”

John McCain’s war against reality
(updated below – updated again)
John McCain was interviewed by Bill Bennett yesterday and this is the claim McCain made about American public opinion on the Iraq war:
[McCain]: I reject the notion that all Americans, or the majority of Americans just want us out of Iraq. Joe Lieberman would not have been re-elected in a very liberal state if that were the case.
UPDATE: As several people have quickly pointed out in Comments, Lieberman did everything he could during the campaign to make the election be something other than a referendum on Iraq and, more so, did everything he could to leave the impression that the war would end soon and that this is what he wanted. Thus, even if it were somehow rational to look only to the Connecticut Senate race and ignore every other data point in the universe to determine American public opinion on the war, even that would hardly provide support for the idea that Americans support the war. One could certainly make the argument that the “running-away-from-Iraq” campaign which Lieberman had to run in order to win proves the opposite.
UPDATE III: As FDM notes in Comments, John McCain previously made the exact opposite point — literally — as the one he is making now. After the midterm elections, McCain went on CNN and said this about why the Republicans lost the election:
And, so, there was a number of factors, including corruption, including our spending practices, including these continued scandals, that, along with Iraq, contributed to our downfall. And, if it had just been Iraq, Joe Lieberman would have never been reelected in Connecticut, a liberal state, where he supported the president on the war.
So just weeks ago, McCain was admitting that Lieberman won in Connecticut because that election was not about Iraq. In fact, McCain expressly admitted that had the election been about Iraq, Lieberman would have lost. But now that he is desperate to show that Americans still support the war, McCain saying exactly the opposite by claiming that the Connecticut election was about Iraq and that Lieberman’s victory therefore proves that Americans haven’t turned against the war.
There are many descriptive phrases for what McCain is doing here, but “straight talking” isn’t one of them. But that, of course, is nothing new.

Over the last three years, the group of organized, well-financed liars ironically named the “Swift Boat Veterans for Truth,†have come to be synonymous with vicious smears and mendacity. Most honorable people, who have any decency at all, look back at the group’s bogus attacks with disgust and disappointment. These clowns smeared a war hero to help a couple of draft-dodgers, and the Republican Party cheered them on.
That, of course, was nearly four years ago. Can we leave this malicious moment in the past? Actually, no. Chris Hayes has a tremendous piece in the new issue of The Nation noting that the Swift Boat Liars’ financiers aren’t just lingering, they’re as active as ever.

In 2004, Swifties were closely tied to the Bush administration, particularly Karl Rove. Care to guess who these guys are rallying behind now? John McCain.

January 5th, 2008 at 10:35 amSince TWICE as many Democrats turned out in Iowa and had to do a lot more (even though Iowa is supposed to be over 50% Republican)—-that would b e like the media celebrating a Democrat who got 6% of the vote!
January 5th, 2008 at 11:44 amSo McCain thinks the election process has integrity?
January 5th, 2008 at 12:24 pmThe media with daily coverage, and full thrust has been telling us for almost a year, and this will go on until elections day, what these cadidates like Hillary,McCain,Obama and others will do if they were elected…

Katy:
“John McCain” is the Israel candidate. He’s the Goy face. It’s actually Lieberman who they are attempting to put in the most powerful chair in America, the one presently occupied by Cheney.
See why they want to let Cheney get away with everything he has? They’re reserving the chair for their own.
January 5th, 2008 at 12:32 pmLieberman = Likud Party.
plunger – can’t argue with you…
all very logical and fitting…
long ago i stated that i felt he was the “anointed one”…
