Media Talking Heads Gush Over McCain Loss In Iowa: ‘Big Hero,’ Maverick,’ ‘Babe Ruth’»

In yesterday’s Iowa caucus, Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) finished fourth — behind senator Fred Thompson — receiving the support of only 13 percent of caucus-goers.

The traditional media, however, proclaimed McCain’s loss a triumph, as pundits quickly jumped in to herald McCain and his “fantastic” finish. ThinkProgress has compiled some lowlights from the media’s gushing television coverage:

MSNBC’s Mike Barnicle: “McCain’s stance on the war. They view it because of who he is and the eye contact during these town meetings. He’s the Babe Ruth of town meetings.”

Fox News’ Greta van Susteren: “I can’t think of anyone happier tonight than Sen. John McCain.”

Politico’s Mike Allen: “Tonight is a fantastic night for John McCain. … He’s one of the biggest winners of the night.”

Newsweek’s Jon Meacham: “To me, the great story about Sen. McCain is, when in doubt, give principle a try.”

Fox News’ Carl Cameron
: “Inside Washington, he’s been a real maverick outsider.”

D-day cuts through the media spin:

The fluffing is almost embarrassing. Journalists all over the country are doing the walk of shame this morning.

Look, McCain finished FOURTH. A win for Huckabee is not a win for McCain. It’s a win for Huckabee.
McCain may take New Hampshire by default, but nothing he did yesterday prepped him for that.

As Atrios said before the results poured in, “If McCain is rejected by 82% of caucusgoers he’s a ‘big hero‘” in the traditional media’s eyes. (He was ultimately rejected by 87%.) Matt Yglesias has more.

UPDATE: Right-wing pundit Bob Novak joins the McCain train, calling him the “big winner.”

McCain hasn’t stirred out of New Hampshire for months.
Of course he stands to do well in a small state among hard core Yankees that he can drive around and visit all week.

  7. Veritas Says:

McCain McSchmain - this guy’s totally irrelevant to americans at this point. Calling him coming in 4th a “win” is gross hyperbole by media whores. The HUGE story today is how incredibly Obama did and the number of Democrats who turned out in Iowa. (Indy’s who joined them as well).

Gregor: Yes, As it was in Orwell’s fictional world, so the DoubleSpeak/Newspeak of Bush’s fantasy world has our own vocabularly bastardized to mean the opposite. It’s a brain screw on the american people. Thankfully, people are catching on and will no longer be duped by bullcrap.

  8. gummitch Says:

Fortunately, no one gives a damn what these idiots say about McCain. Can you imagine any sentient being looking at the Iowa results and thinking, “Wow. McCain has got the momentum going now. I’m voting for the Maverick!”

None of these people want to face the notion of Huckelberry as the Republican candidate. No, no, no, not a real Religious Rightie! You never know what guys like that will do next!

So they generate utter and ridiculous crap like this, because their arrogance convinces them that people will swallow it. Even the dumbest hick on the planet will look at 13% and think, “Gawsh. That sucks!”

  9. Veritas Says:

This is the reality of it: You can bundle up every single Repuke candidate and roll them into one package and they still couldn’t stand up to any of the Democratic candidates. The GOP is OVER.

  10. gummitch Says:

This is pathetic. GOP leadership should lay down the law and tell Huckabee to quit. We need a serious candidate like Rudy or, maybe, McCain. Not a nutso like Huckabee.

    Comment by Frank M — January 4, 2008 @ 6:22 pm

Damn right. No reason to let actual Republican voters choose a candidate. That would be like, uh, democracy.

Tough luck for the fascists, Frank. You may be stuck with a candidate that believes all the horsesh!t the Republics have been spinning for years.

  11. Zooey Says:

Fluffers — excellent word for them.

  12. Veritas Says:

gummitch: The Gophers are between a rock and a hard place with their creepy gang of candidates. They have a wannabe guitar man-turned-bible thumper who hasn’t a clue about how this government runs or where the rest of the world is located - living in a total vacuum; a New York thug who was able to clean up the streets of NY with his mafioso connections and then had the taxpayers of NY foot the bill for his trysts with a mistress; a television actor who has about as much finesse and vitality as a toad; and then there’s Ron Paul…..the real GOP “maverick” if ever there was one. Paul doesn’t fit the Repuke mold though so they’re trying to eliminate him from the radar via Faux News.

This is the case of one desperate and diminishing party, once known as the GOP, who is losing voters by the droves because they can’t get out of their own way and continue to dig themselves in even deeper.

As I see it, this is a definite ONE PARTY ELECTION. The republicans don’t have a shred of a hope in 08.

  13. Marie Says:

This is incredible - only in Republican bizarro world would this be interpreted as a “big win” for McCain.
The pundits have their orders - Huckabee cannot win; stop him. They are required to spin this into a success for McCain.
Someone else can explain why Huckabee is so despised by his party leaders.
I know he is a Jesus freak who gets personal messages from God; a person who denies science because it doesn’t fit into his version of 6-days-creation; a person who thinks women should be subservient to men; an adult who still has trouble with geography and who doesn’t keep up with current events. He is totally unsuited to be president - but that didn’t stop the party from instlaling GWB twice - so what’s the deal with Huckleberry?

  14. Veritas Says:

hey zooey! I like that - but remember those peanut butter and fluff sandwiches?? FLUFFER-NUTTERS might be even more apropos.

  15. Nevar Says:

I once heard that fluffing was a delicate term for breaking wind….

  16. voxlikeafox Says:

Perhaps this is the beginning of the Republicans attempting to pull together behind the only candidate they think could stand a chance against the Democrat who will ultimately emerge. Clinton is a woman and she’ll feminize us all!! Obama has a scary terrorist middle name!! Edwards has a really spendy haircut and he’s never been a POW!!

I looooooooooove the desperation in the air…

  17. Veritas Says:

Marie: The GOP knows that Dinkleberry’s a loose canon - one whom they might not be able to control due to his level of fanaticism. He could awaken one morning and tell the world that the devil is actually George Bush. One never knows what may fall from his lips.

  18. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper Says:

This is all very predictable. Edwards comes in second, 6 points behind Obama and “he’s through.” Clinton comes in a close third, 7 points behind and that tired old fixer Andrea Mitchell calls it a “stinging rebuke.”

McCain comes in over 20 points behind and it’s a “victory!!!” Romney comes in 15 points behind and “he still in it!!!”

Folks, we’ve seen this movie before. We see it every four years. We just have to keep talking about it, keep sending letters, keep letting them understand that we see them working.

  19. Veritas Says:

Frank M: And that’s the very first thing you and I agree upon - Huck’s all of the above but the last one is downright frightening. He is certificably nuts!

The first portion of your post, however, couldn’t be farther from the truth. In this election, the power structure will be handed back to the people where it justly belongs in this democracy. If Obama picks up Edwards as his veep, Edwards will cut the fascism at the jugular and immediately. There will never be a continuation of this path of destruction hatched and carved by the Bush administration ever again in this country or it will be it’s doom. That’s undeniable.

  20. Above the Clouds Says:

It’s fun watching the GOP field pretend they aren’t Republicans who will eventually need to convince America that Republicans are the one’s who can fix Bush’s Republican mess. McCain’s ass is still sore from the reaming Rove gave him in 2000 in SC.

  21. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper Says:

Please don’t respond to a troll who proudly thinks that “the cause” and “the party” are more important than the consitutional system and the country. He might as well be a frickin Stalinist.

I find it fascinating that the largest corporate whores (the mainstream media) have become so transparent that they haven’t given ANY air time (except CNN) to the #2 Democrat yet give full air time (bullshit time) to the Repuke #4. Do they really think people can’t see them for what they are??

I’d love to see an Obama/Edwards or Edwards/Obama ticket. It would known the corporate fascist empire out into left field and be the one,two punch which will turn the lights out on the GOP forever.

  26. Gregor Samsa Says:

“Inside Washington, he’s been a real maverick outsider”

    Wha?

The inanity in the media is almost hard to believe. What in the world does this comment even mean?

Then again, Fox watchers probably did nod in agreement and will parrot this line certain they sound informed, no doubt….

  27. Veritas Says:

Besides, why isn’t the media talking about McCain’s cancer?? It’s because he wouldn’t last a term of 4 years, that’s why, with what his diagnosis is.

I disagree Frank. As much idealism as they may have, they still need their jobs. I doubt very much any ‘mid-level’ anybodies are going to chance getting into trouble by maintaining the road map you described. They will be alone in a sea of new faces and new ideas.

Once Bush and his enforcers are gone, I suspect most everybody will simply make the necessary changes to their outlook and carry on. Most of those mid-level folks probably just went along with the flow because it was easier than fighting all the Bush appointees.

True! But, weird things happen in politics and anger is unpredictable. Now is the time to turn up the heat and the MSM won’t do it for us. That being said, we most likely will end up with an election which is, virtually, uncontested. BTW, the huge Dem turnout is a positive indication for congressional races too. I think that chances for a major butt-whipping are pretty good.

Um, those “mid-level loyalists” have already jumped ship. Where do you think all the “leaks” are coming from? They are coming from “mid-level loyalists” who want there to be a country/government after Bush. Plus, those “mid-level loyalists” don’t want to end up swinging by their necks. 1. They will never “wake up.” They are the voice of corporate America, Democratic version.

    2. Soon they will no longer control the Democratic Party. Their time of glory is passed (past, the 90s.)

    3. They will no longer be the voice of the Democratic Party (unless Hillary gets elected.)

I’ve noticed that Obama and Clinton follow Edwards on most issues. The Fox debates, for one example. I’d really like to see an African American or a woman as President, but not at the cost of maintaining the political status quo.

    Edwards/? ‘08!

Both Obama and Clinton are moderates. They are NOT neocons. They both have had to make statements and votes designed to show the vast middle of the voting populace that they’re not radicals. Either of them would have a stronger EPA, either would cooperate with international treaties and neither of them would have attacked Iraq for no reason. Can we get a grip? Neither of these two, who are the most conservative of Dems right now, are even close to Bush and Cheney.

  79. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper Says:

Marcus: “I’ve noticed that Obama and Clinton follow Edwards on most issues.”

I think Edwards has been pulling Obama to the left. Obama’s rhetoric has been getting more and more Edwardsy which is a good thing, because I don’t think Edwards is going to be able to go the distance. He’s always been my favorite.

In fact, the more I see posts like yours, the more I think that sleazy conservatives are posing as disaffected lefties and attempting to syphon off potential voters for the eventual Democratic nominee. Go ahead and vote for whomever the Communist Party nominee fields this year. It’s a free country. If you want to be completely irrelevant, that’s your choice. I don’t care if you vote for the Green or the Socialist Workers’ Party nominee or the Party of God or the Libertarian, but stop pretending there is no difference between Dems and repubes. At best it’s silly, black and white adolescent thinking and at worst, it’s a dishonest attempt to spread disaffection among potential Democratic voters. I’m just not buying it. But, have a nice weekend, everyone. I look for the Dems to rout repubes this year, end the modern libertarian/conservative movement, heavily wound the repube party and start a new era of progressive liberal policies similar to the early 20th century and the ’30’s. Let’s rock!

Furthermore, Hillary stood firmly against the invasion of Iraq? Even more, did you stand against the invasion of Iraq in March 2003? Did you support going into Iraq? These are relevant questions looking at how much you defend Hillary…just because you don’t want another Bush?!

Well, but indeed you have a point, the corporations choose their people and they show them to the general populations as “options” in our sacred democracy. The illusion of people exercising their power by an election is pitiful.

Had Edwards done better I’d say the Progressive/Far left wing of the Democrats is in ascendancy, but the Dems are much more likely to nominate Obama or Clinton. I think Obama is feigning DLC sympathy more than he believes it. I really think he is the most progressive candidate with an actual shot.

BTW, I don’t think it is bad that the middle 10-20% of each party is ideologically sympatico. It is that centrist group that allows compromise to occur and government to function.

An extremely salient point and one that goes a long way to explaining why African-Americans are so overwhelmingly Democratic when it was the Democratic Party that not only led the Secession movement in defense of slavery but more recently oversaw the Jim Crow south.

It has been said that candidates court the fringe in primaries and court the center in the general election.

What I find shocking is that anyone is buying into the existence of a “far left” wing of the Democratic party. Even Edwards is about as “far left” as my right arm.

Heck, Hillary is more “conservative” than most conservatives. But, BillO and the other talking heads need to dehumanize someone and she’s “the chosen one”. It’s actually rather amusing. I get a good chuckle every time I hear, “Hillary Clinton and the far left”.

New Hampshire will just be the final nail in the coffin. Don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out John.

I’m not so certain of that. Iowans, bless their hearts, don’t like “uppity” women or New Yorkers. The shear numerical advantage, should the trend continue, means that few Republicans will be elected to the House/Senate.

I think the Dems could nominate a pack of rabid skunks and still achieve a “super-majority”. That’s an unsettling thought, but, I think that we need to risk it in order to start fixing Bushco’s mess.

So, I think that, yes, I think they—they think that they can pivot from losing. But I will tell you, this inevitability thing, what message is it going to send to the rank-and-file Clinton donor in California, in Florida who really, you know, hasn‘t really tuned in, doesn‘t know how tough Iowa really was, and they wake up and find out she lost? Will they start…
