John McCain’s war against reality

(updated below – updated again)

John McCain was interviewed by Bill Bennett yesterday and this is the claim McCain made about American public opinion on the Iraq war:

[McCain]: I reject the notion that all Americans, or the majority of Americans just want us out of Iraq. Joe Lieberman would not have been re-elected in a very liberal state if that were the case.

UPDATE: As several people have quickly pointed out in Comments, Lieberman did everything he could during the campaign to make the election be something other than a referendum on Iraq and, more so, did everything he could to leave the impression that the war would end soon and that this is what he wanted. Thus, even if it were somehow rational to look only to the Connecticut Senate race and ignore every other data point in the universe to determine American public opinion on the war, even that would hardly provide support for the idea that Americans support the war. One could certainly make the argument that the “running-away-from-Iraq” campaign which Lieberman had to run in order to win proves the opposite.

UPDATE III: As FDM notes in Comments, John McCain previously made the exact opposite point — literally — as the one he is making now. After the midterm elections, McCain went on CNN and said this about why the Republicans lost the election:

And, so, there was a number of factors, including corruption, including our spending practices, including these continued scandals, that, along with Iraq, contributed to our downfall. And, if it had just been Iraq, Joe Lieberman would have never been reelected in Connecticut, a liberal state, where he supported the president on the war.

So just weeks ago, McCain was admitting that Lieberman won in Connecticut because that election was not about Iraq. In fact, McCain expressly admitted that had the election been about Iraq, Lieberman would have lost. But now that he is desperate to show that Americans still support the war, McCain saying exactly the opposite by claiming that the Connecticut election was about Iraq and that Lieberman’s victory therefore proves that Americans haven’t turned against the war.

There are many descriptive phrases for what McCain is doing here, but “straight talking” isn’t one of them. But that, of course, is nothing new.

US Senator John McCain a favorite of Iowa Jews

When Arizona Senator John McCain took the stage the night before the first-in-the-nation caucuses to be held here Thursday night, he thanked several fellow senators who had joined him on stage to show their support. But then he also mentioned another senator — Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut — who wasn’t present because he was campaigning for him in New Hampshire.

McCain promotes his alliance with Lieberman, an independent senator and Orthodox Jew who campaigned in 2000 as the Democratic vice presidential nominee, to show off his bipartisan credentials, and his reference to his “favorite Democrat” before the conservative Iowa audience who had braved the cold to greet him elicited cheers.

“The fact that Lieberman affiliated with [McCain] brought him up with a certain quadrant of the Jewish community,” said a Jewish leader in Iowa in explaining Jewish support for McCain, though he also referred to support for other candidates, including former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

Earlier in the day, Connecticut Sen. Joseph Lieberman stumped for McCain on the Seacoast.

Lieberman, who was headed for a mid-afternoon rally in Portsmouth’s Market Square, said that if McCain wins next Tuesday, he can turn the campaign around because he’s “the most electable Republican nominee.”

Lieberman said he crossed party lines because he has worked with McCain for 19 years and believes in him.

“I know some Democrats are unhappy I’ve done this, but if you want to stand for something in our politics, you can’t make everyone happy. . .,” he said. “In the end, I’ve got to feel I’m doing something for our country. I think the Mac and the magic are back.”

After Iowa: Is there room for both McCain and Giuliani?

A week ago we reported here on McCain’s progress, a by-product of America’s relative success in Iraq in recent months. But McCain doesn’t stick only to Iraq. He is the candidate insisting that the 2008 elections focus, ultimately, on foreign policy. “I know Pakistan. I know Israel,” he declared. “I know these countries”- meaning the problematic ones that demand special attention.

Three senators accompany McCain to the event: former presidential candidate Sam Brownback of Kansas, John Thune of South Dakota, and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, who tells the crowd how much world leaders respect McCain. Liberty Cover-Up and John McCain’s Conscience

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) is the “Conscience of the Senate.” Nevertheless, he won’t come clean about what really happened to the USS Liberty, at the hands of the Israelis.

One of the Navy bigwigs pushing hard for a sanitized Liberty inquiry was none other than Sen. McCain’s father, Admiral John S. McCain, Jr., Commander-in-Chief, Naval Forces Europe. He wanted the investigation done in less than a week. Boston said a “proper inquiry would take at least six months.” Admiral McCain also wouldn’t permit Admiral Kidd to travel to Israel or to contact any potential Israelis witnesses. In fact, according to Boston, the written affidavits of 60 witnesses from the Liberty itself, who were hospitalized at the time of the restricted Inquiry, were also excluded from the final report and not considered as part of the evidentiary record. Boston is convinced, too, that the Israelis’ machine-gunning of the Liberty’s lifeboats, while the crew was trying desperately to assist their colleagues that were seriously wounded, was “a war crime.”

‘Every last piece’ destroyed

Adam Candeub, now a law professor at Michigan State University, said senior managers at the agency ordered that “every last piece” of the report be destroyed. “The whole project was just stopped – end of discussion,” he said. Candeub was a lawyer in the FCC’s Media Bureau at the time the report was written and communicated frequently with its authors, he said.
