Romney: People don’t want change ‘in the White House.’

On the CBS Early Show this morning, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney inexplicably claimed that Americans only want change “in Washington,” but not “in the White House”:

Well, you know, I think the race in Iowa was really a very clear call that people want change in Washington, not in the White House, in Washington.

Watch it:

[flv http://video.thinkprogress.org/2008/01/romneywh.320.240.flv]

A recent NYT/CBS News poll makes clear that voters specifically want to change what’s going on in the White House. Only 28 percent approve of the way Bush is handling his job. Just 26 percent approve of Bush’s handling of foreign policy and his handling of the economy.

Digg It!

Why does anyone, even Republican candidates, feel the need to placate the White House as they run for office?

Its infuriating to see candidates that (on the Republican side) continue to kiss the proverbial ring of George W. Bush, or (on the Democrat side) won’t denounce the policies of Bush for the un-Constitutional attempts at facism that they are.

  43. Veritas says:

This just illustrates how out of touch with the american people Mitt actually is. The MAIN problem with Washington is this White House Bush Cabal – that’s what the people can’t wait to be rid of and in a more united fashion begin to rebuild this democracy.

At least Bush was accurate in one of his assertions and self-imposed monikers: The Uniter!! He’s united the american citizens against him, that’s what he’s single-handedly managed to accomplish.

  44. MapleStreet says:

Could someone tell me when they moved the White House out of DC ? I missed that in the news.

  45. Veritas says:

The corruption of this white house and every corner of it’s administration will be the uniting force where the people of this democracy begin to take back control of it. In that respect, I guess we have to thank all of the criminals, liars, and cadres of sycophants for helping to unite The People more than we’ve been united in decades!!

  46. Veritas says:

  49. Jim says:

This incomprehensible statement sounds a lot like Romney’s claim that “freedom requires religion, just as religion requires freedom.” It may be poll-tested, but it makes zero logical sense.

    Comment by good_golly — January 4, 2008 @ 1:29 pm

I’ll give you that he said (or intended to say “just”), only because he couldn’t possibly be such a dim bulb as to think that most Americans are tickled pink with the current administration.

But I don’t think that the caucus results themselves are a “clear call” that the voters wanted a change in Washington as well, since as far as I can see, the only thing that’s come out of the caucus results is who the voters want for president.

However, Romney spent a fair amount of time in Iowa talking to people. He is probably making his remarks based on that experience.

Or he may have said this because it’s a fairly safe bet — most people want a change in Washington. And the White House. The Republicans want Congress back. The Democrats want a Congress with enough Dems that the Repubs can’t play their obstruction games. The Republicans want a president they can respect. And so do the Democrats.

  51. shoeless says:

This incomprehensible statement sounds a lot like Romney’s claim that “freedom requires religion, just as religion requires freedom.” It may be poll-tested, but it makes zero logical sense.

    Comment by Jim

He meant to say, ““Freedom haywires religion, just as religion haywires freedom.”

  52. gummitch says:

I feel dirty. I agree with polly_wolly: TP has misunderstood Romney’s comment. What he very clearly says is that people don’t want change just in the White House but in Washington DC, and his clear implication (whether accurate or not) is that voters will prefer people from outside the Beltway in the primaries.

Which is not to say that his comment makes any sense. The three leading Democrats? Two senators and former senator. Not so much with the outside the Beltway. The Republican candidates are all from outside, except for McCain, so the Iowa results can hardly reflect any such message on their side.

  53. missmolly says:

Iowans prefer so-called “Washington-outsiders” which is why every candidate that can is now going to try to make himself look like a Washington-outsider. This includes Romney.

    Comment by good_golly — January 4, 2008 @ 1:52 pm

Iowans aren’t the only ones. America likes to elect governors because they are the only ones who can successfully paint themselves as “Washington outsiders”. We haven’t elected a sitting Senator or Representative since John F. Kennedy.

The only problem is that as soon as the “Washington outsider” gets to Washington, he becomes a Washington insider. He has to, if he expects to accomplish anything. This cycle repeats every four years, and voters fall for it every time.

It’s not without amusement, though. Fred Thompson is probably the ultimate Washington insider, and I expect to see his red pickup any day now. Hillary, even though she is spinning the heck out of everything else, is at least honest enough to admit that she’s a Washington insider — in fact, she’s promoting that aspect of herself.

I agree in most cases. However, when a public figure makes religion a major issue, they set themselves up for criticism. And it’s hard not to poke some fun at a religion which has as many quirks as Mormonism.

Generally though, I prefer to “attack” the person rather than the religion. To do otherwise shows disrespect to good souls who practice a particular Faith and is in poor taste.

Besides which, their are plenty of reasons to “attack” various candidates without taking notice of their Faith.

He is clearly stating Washington as a whole not just the white house. obviously everyone in the nation wants the person in the white house to change, but to even a greater degree we want the whole Washington scene to change, business can no longer go on as usual. As for all the left wing hate mongers on this site, you think a democrat will change the status quo but look at how that turned out with Pelosi and Reed. Oh they will make it all better right? Wrong, they haven’t even come close to doing all they said they would and never will, they are just as much flip floppers as anyone could be. Hillary is up for sale, Edwards is a trial lawyer so he knows how to speak to persuade for sure, and Barak is nothing more than a new face, but does he have any ability to run a country????? he hasn’t run a thing in his life that requires that kind of know. Don’t pull the wool over your own eyes.

That’s actually what he’s saying. He’s not implying that people don’t want change in the White House. That’s not at all what he said.

And he may or may not be right about that–people DO want change, but a sitting Senator actually won the Democratic Caucus, so….

When you call people names based on brain-dead misunderstanding of what they’re saying, WHO DO YOU THINK LOOKS LIKE A MORON?? When you swallow a badly written headline without thinking, you’re as bad as the worst O’Reilley or Limbaugh clone out there.

#11(and #20) “after listening to the clip, you’re right”.

    You two need to listen to the clip again; Romney clearly says, quote;

“People want change in Washington, not in the whitehouse, in Washington.”

Romney IS saying what the Think Progress blog quotes!

    What are you two, Romneyites???

  99. amigabill says:

I’m a person in America, and I most certainly do want change in the Whitehouse. I consider Romney’s statement as a blatant lie. Oh well, the candidate match websites out there put him and other republicans pretty far down on my list of appropriate candidates, so I won’t be participating in putting him into the whitehouse to maintain Bush/Cheney’s status quo of evil.

  100. creatingastorywherethereisnone says:

It’s pretty clear to me that Gov. Romney is stating that Iowans showed that they want change in Washington, and NOT just in the White House: That no, they don’t want another Clinton or Bush in the White House (28 years is enough, right?), but that they’re also sick of the same old faces in Washington. Huckabee and Obama are both relatively new faces on the national scene, compared to that of Clinton, Dodd, McCain, et al.

Should I watch the clip again or am I missing something?
