50% of diplomats disagree with Iraq war.

ricewave8.JPGThe Washington Post reported today that only “18 percent of the U.S. Foreign Service think Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is doing a good job protecting their profession” and 44 percent rate her performance as “poor” or “very poor.” The AP also notes that nearly 50 percent of diplomats disagree with the Bush administration’s Iraq policy:

But 48 percent cited “disagreement” with administration policy as a factor in their opposition, said the survey conducted by the American Foreign Service Association, the union that represents U.S. diplomats. In addition, nearly 70 percent of U.S. diplomats oppose forced assignments to Iraq.

State Department spokesman Sean McCormack dismissed the findings, claiming the poll was “self-selective.”

Yup. The survey is "self-selective". The respondents are professionals engaged in promoting the interests of the United States abroad through diplomatic effort.

  33. Starve-A-Bush_Feed-A-Beaver Says:

This poll is "self-selective" according to the administration? In other words, it represents the views of those who chose to come out and criticize the Bush Administration? And even then, only 18% support Condi Rice's job performance and 50% were opposed to the handling of the war in Iraq. A forced poll obligating each and every diplomat to respond would have been even more critical of Bush, including those who didn't want to expose themselves by openly criticizing their boss. I would estimate that the members of the State Department who are fed up with the Iraq war is closer to 90%.

We have seen this within EPA, DoJ, CIA, FEMA, NASA and practically every other administrative agency. In each case, those who have been career civil servants with a history of serving both Republican and Democratic adminstrations agree that they are being led by fools. However, if you speak to one of the few die-hard Republicans still left, you will find that they will speak only of traitors, partisanship and liberal bias. The same occurs in foreign policy. Even Canada and most of our European allies believe that Russia plays a more constructive role in the world than the United States. It is time to bring down these fools. This administration, the Republicans and their conservative allies show every sign of being delusional.

True, racists and sexists might call Condi a "failure". But more likely, they would refer to her with racist and sexist terms, NOT a term than denotes performance deficits. The fact is many of us can look at Condi Rice, not as a black female, but simply as a public servant and judge her performance on its own merits. Your attempt to paint criticism of her as racist or sexist is a pretty lame form of support for her.

It's kind of the point, really, criticizing them for their actual behavior rather than color or gender. I don't expect Manslagt to grasp that, however. The Bush administration has tried to deflect any criticism of them as racist or sexist by pointing to Rice -- there's a name for that, of course. Tokenism.

  54. PatrioticLiberalChristian Says:

Manslagt, question for you on post 53. Here's your chance to be the "BushCo Hero". 50% means that half of the Washington insiders believe that Condi's a total failure. I would think the number might be higher than that. If it's rigged or skewed in any way, it's rigged to create a higher than realistic number here. She's the quintessential flop! And that has nothing to do with sex, color, or creed.

What a totally heinous, criminal injustice is being done to the people of this country who actually believe that their vote will count.

Fix it or forget it! Some states are mandating "paper ballots" which needs to be a nationalwide mandate before our election this year - or else - expect the results to be hacked again - for the third time by the GOP.

I agree that Dr. Rice is a very, very smart person - but only in an acedemic sense (maybe shoes, too). She also has a specific background dealing in Russian issues. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, and the ME being the trouble spot, I think she has loads of expertise, but in the wrong area.

Seems to me Bush would have selected a ME expert if he had plans to invade Iraq. At least that person would have come into the job with the necessary background.

The people in this country have awakened from a long sleep and they now realize that Eisenhower was right when he warned us against the Military Industrial Complex that is now running our government. 93. Fred Says:

Americans have had a good look at untethered conservatism and it scares them. There is a reason the dems ran things for 40 years before the repubs lied and cheated their way into power.

  94. mary Says:

I suppose that if one was to be critical of Hillary it would have nothing to do with sexism eh Manslaght?

  95. mary Says:

I think Condi spent quite a bit of time tutoring the Chimp, in fact. I don’t think she did a very good job of that, either.

    Comment by Starve-A-Bush_Feed-A-Beaver — January 8, 2008 @ 3:15 pm

I concur, but, can you imagine if she had NOT tutored him?!

p.s. I guess she never got around to the differences between Sunnis & Shiites!

  96. Uncle Ho Says:

Bilbo; sorry, but I do have my principles. Resign in protest and denounce the administration is what I would have done.

  97. dbadass Says:

I think people see Hillary as asexual.

    Comment by Manslagt — January 8, 2008 @ 4:25 pm

I have no interest in ranking the sexuality of these two woman but I would be a bit concerned if you believe that most find Hillary asexual but apparantly you think that Dr. Rice is thought of as sexual. Maybe this is just a cop out for the obvious dichotomy of your thinking relative to the issue of critical analysis of each's accomplishments and job performance

  98. dbadass Says:

“I think Condi spent quite a bit of time tutoring the Chimp, in fact. I don’t think she did a very good job of that, either.”

I don’t believe Rice has tutored Obama.

    Comment by Manslagt — January 8, 2008 @ 4:27 pm

If this is indeed the racist shit it appears to be you are gonna get hammered worse the you usually do and to date I have never seen you be anything but destroyed around here

“we don’t answer kool aid drinking trolls.”

Especially when you cannot refute what a “troll” has written.

    Comment by Manslagt

Why do you hate America. Please explain that to us.

  100. ForTruth Says:

Ok Condi's not a failure, just completely ineffective.

  101. Fred Says:

I love American. However, I dislike ignorant moonbats like you.

    Comment by Manslagt

No you don't. You hate America you kool aid drinking moron. Just please tell us why?

  102. Fred Says:

    Manslagt
You did say that we were unpatriotic because we called bush and cheny war criminals and said they should be tried for war crimes and hung until they were dead didn't you?

  103. Fred Says:

    Fred:

    You’re an ignorant fool.

    Comment by Manslagt

Oh, I'm so hurt by that. 112 you even called us traitors for not supporting the chimp in chief blindly didn't you?

  104. Fred Says:

    Where are you manslop

  105. dbadass Says:

    Comment by Manslagt — January 8, 2008 @ 4:43 pm

That's pretty easy. Most informed people know that the Chimp reference to Mr. Bush has been around for quite some time and is related to his annoying smirks and facial expressions which many comics have latched onto. Also it is a pretty much no brainer that linking a person of African descent to other primates has been a historic racially derogatory remark. Whereas there has been no comic link between Mr. Obama and chimpanzees, one can only assume your comment for what it appears to be.

  106. Fred Says:

come on manslop, last night you wanted to give me you peck specs so I would be scared of you........what did you say you were.....a young barry bonds but you do take the steroids.......I can just imagine.

  107. dbadass Says:

I don’t know. With his ears, Obama looks more like a chimpanzee than Bush does. I suppose you also think it was racist of Pearl S. Buck to describe characters in “The Good Earth” as having simian features.

    Comment by Manslagt — January 8, 2008 @ 4:54 pm

No not really based upon the total difference in the context as well as the norms of the time. If you want me to believe there was no racial intent in the comment feel free to explain your intent.

  108. Fred Says:

    Comment by Manslagt

Its bushs face that looks just like a chimp...simian like if you will.

  109. Leftside Annie Says:

Wow, Mannyslag. You're really skating on thin racist ice, aren't you...?

  110. ForTruth Says:

    Manslagt,

    Steroids make the weenie shrivel.

  111. Fred Says:

He's a republican...they are proud of their racism, sexism, etc.

  112. dbadass Says:

    Comment by Manslagt — January 8, 2008 @ 5:15 pm

And this just came to you? If you want to pursue your primate comparisions may I suggest that Mr. Bush is far more chimp like. If you need a primate for Mr. Obama, I think the bonobo would be far more appropriate and for reasons which have nothing to do with physical appearances

  113. Lefty Patriot Says:

Wow, Mannyslag. You’re really skating on thin racist ice, aren’t you…?

    Comment by Leftside Annie — January 8, 2008 @ 5:19 pm

Nah, he's fallen in. Republicans have racism in their platform as a requirement. Their ability to ignore Strom Thurmond's love child is a perfect example of their rank hypocrisy and lack of evolution. Simian is a good word for Republicans, based on behavior rather than appearance.

  114. RUCerious Says:

Perhaps it's the shape of bush's head, or the skinny neck with the ears, I'm not sure. It's either Alfred E. Neuman or a chimpanzee, but there's a resemblence there.

  115. Ditch Mitch KY Says:

18% SD officials support Rice? Who are these insane people?

  116. williamf Says:

We don't need no candy-ass diplomats in Iraq. Diplomacy in this administration is a joke anyway. We ought to lay-off thousands of these sponges and put the money where it would do the most good. Diplomats in Iraq...ha, ha, ha, ha, boy that's a good one.
