Fox News edits Ron Paul out of AP story.

Fox News edits Ron Paul out of AP story.»

Fox News recently excluded anti-war conservative Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) from its New Hampshire presidential debate. Libertarian Underground reports that Fox has now edited out Ron Paul’s name from an AP story posted on its website:

From the International Herald Tribune:

From Fox News:

(HT: Newshounds)

UPDATE: As TP commenter Exley points out, the AP ran multiple stories and Fox News simply picked up an early version. We regret the error.

gee… i wonder if the AP will have a problem with that…

    the AP? … ah hahaha!

  2. Leftside Annie Says:

FAUX SNOOZE: the Rudy Guiliani News Network.

    *eyeroll*

  3. Frosty Cupcake Says:

It gives me a weird sort of grim joy, watching the Republican network disenfranchise some of its own voters.

  4. katy Says:

by the way - and off topic - but,
i have noticed, when clicking on a link to “International Herald Tribune”, usually from google news, it crashes my browser, safari…

anyone with any clues as to why?

  5. ForTruth Says:

Why does Fox hate a Republican candidate?

  6. Theresa Says:

Not only have they removed Ron Paul from the AP article, which is identified as an AP article, they also change the historical content of the original writer’s article. The original AP article says:

Mitt Romney, Fred Thompson, Duncan Hunter and Ron Paul have passed through since September.

They change it to state that ONLY Mitt Romney, Fred Thompson and Duncan Hunter have passed through since September.

  7. imorgan82 Says:

Y’know, Fox sucks/is fascist/all that, but just because Ron Paul is anti-war doesn’t mean he’s not a total classist prick like the rest of the Republican Party. Stop crying foul for Ron Paul, he’s awful, he just happens to be for pulling back within our own borders.

  8. sashimi Says:

I hope this Ron Paul movement would give a chance for “change”,seriously!,among people who thought Fox tv was for “fair & balance”!

  9. SWBob Says:

A perfect example of why the neocons want to let corporate news have control of all the news!

  10. missmolly Says:

“Fox News — polished and sanitized for your safety!”

Ron Paul is a libertarian way out in loonville, even if he’s right on the Iraq war issue. Because of that issue, he has gained many supporters who are unaware of his stance on other issues (such as abolishing the IRS and most federal agencies, etc.).

However, Fox News is treating me like an idiot if they believe they must edit him out of all news stories. Why? Am I so stupid I can’t make up my own mind about candidates?

  11. Peter C Says:

“But the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy.”

    sound familiar?

    http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/?q=node/1

  12. Godfry Daniel Says:

Anyone who watches Fox News is an idiot and therefore deserves to be lied to.

  13. Exley Says:

Okay, ThinkProgress, you are really going to have to learn how wire services like AP and Reuters work….Stories are sent out by AP and Reuters to news outlets which then pick them up and run them. The wire service stories are then updated throughout the day with additional information as it comes in.

Fox did not edit out Paul’s name. It posted an early version of the story AP submitted to the news outlets. The early version of the story did not include Paul’s name. The article was clearly updated with additional information later on, which included adding Paul’s name.

Here is a link to The Guardian’s (a left-leaning British newspaper) version of the AP story. As you see, they too don’t have Paul’s name. That is because they used the same version of the AP story:

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/ worldlatest/ story/ 0,,-7194158,00.html

Note the time stamp of 8:30 am in the Guadian story

Here is a later version of the same story from WTOP that includes Paul’s name

    http://www.wtopnews.com/?nid=213&sid=1319890

Notice the 6:53 pm time stamp…This is an updated version of the story.

So, in short, TP, you are wrong. Paul’s name was not ‘edited’ out by Fox or The Guardian. Both outlets used the same, early version of the AP story.

  14. Peter C Says:

more of the same sort of thing:

In the summer of 2002, after I had written an article in Esquire that the White House didn’t like about Bush’s former communications director, Karen Hughes, I had a meeting with a senior adviser to Bush. He expressed the White House’s displeasure, and then he told me something that at the time I didn’t fully comprehend — but which I now believe gets to the very heart of the Bush presidency.

The aide said that guys like me were ”in what we call the reality-based community,” which he defined as people who ”believe that solutions emerge from your judicious study of discernible reality.” I nodded and murmured something about enlightenment principles and empiricism. He cut me off. ”That’s not the way the world really works anymore,” he continued. ”We’re an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you’re studying that reality — judiciously, as you will — we’ll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that’s how things will sort out. We’re history’s actors . . . and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do.”

  15. ForTruth Says:

Fox news thinks everyone is an idiot.

  16. hellinabucket Says:

Mr. Bigfoot, then Fox will have to stop using the “We report, you decide” moniker if they are deciding what to report before we decide.

You may like someone deciding for you and Fox values your type. I appreciate the whole story, not a foxcropped slanted view.

  17. hellinabucket Says:

Exley, so the correction by Fox is due any minute now.

  18. PatrioticLiberalChristian Says:

FOX: When news breaks, we fix it.

  19. Wayne Says:

I am not a Ron Paul fan, but I find the media manipulation of the election by excluding candidates deliberately before the first primary vote was even cast, disgusting.

Why not report about the media excluding Kucinich and Gravel as well. Also Kucinich is getting crap from state Dem groups trying to keep him off the ballots. WTF??

Every candidate has a right to be heard and every voter has the right to hear what each candidate has to say. With the 2 parties and the media deliberately excluding candidates and not letting us hear from them, this is a deliberate subversion of the democratic process.

  20. Frosty Cupcake Says:

Peter: Their “reality” is the reality of Kafke, where everthing is dark and threatening.

    Only much less entertaining.

  21. ForTruth Says:

Exley quit carrying water for Fox. If Fox was really balanced they would have updated to the newer version. They would want to report on all the candidates.

  22. Dumb_Fox Says:

    @ 15 - Good call Exley.

Look folks, we know Fox’s agenda. Excluding Ron Paul from the NH debate was cast iron proof.

But not everything that looks like bias is what it seems. I have issues with news organizations repeating news wire stories with little or no fact-checking, but that’s a function of habit/laziness/whatever, not bias.

  23. Frosty Cupcake Says:

    Wayne:

Agreed *and* I’m sick of the constant polling, foisting the “inevitable” Hillary off on the nation for months on end before even a single vote was cast by an *actual* voter.

Ahh, if corporations could just get rid of voters altogether. How happy they would be!

  24. Wilco Says:

Wayne, they have to set up requirements for candidates to meet, otherwise you’d have two dozen canditates at each debate. There are many more candidates out there you haven’t heard of. The networks have to set the bar somewhere.
(Didn’t TP report about some porno king who’s running for president?)

  25. MapleStreet Says:

First, ditto to the above on the insanity and lack of ethics in taking Ron Paul out. (I rather liked Leno last night taking the tack that he was having Ron Paul on his show to make up for the unamerican tactic of taking a contender out of the debate).

BUT EVEN MORE: as I read the Falsified News report, only A, B, and C have visitied the state. By simple logic, this is an assertion that no one else (including D = Ron Paul) have visited the state.

If Ron Paul has as much as flown over the state, then the statement is wrong, a falsehood. Unfortunately, the bar for prosecuting libel / slander is rather high is political statements.

  26. StratRat Says:

FOX: When news breaks, we fix it.

    Comment by PatrioticLiberalChristian

Or how about “FOX: When the wind breaks, it was us.”

That phrase has an olfactory edge to it.

  27. Exley Says:

    One more thing, TP….

Fox DID run the later version of the AP story with Paul listed:

    http://www.foxnews.com/ wires/ 2008Jan03/ 0,4670,WyomingRepublicans,00.html

Time for TP is to issue a correction.

  28. joe cantwell Says:

ex-lax, please provide the link to the fox “updated” ap story that includes ron paul’s name. thank you.

  29. Peter C Says:

    You’re right, Frosty Cupcake (@22),

The scariest thing is, some of them believe that ‘their reality’ is real, and they are acting upon these beliefs with the full force of the American Government and Military, regardless of such quaint ideas as ‘truth’, ‘facts’ or even ‘laws’ and ‘The Constitution’.

They are doing horrible, unspeakable things in our names and it has to stop NOW!

  30. Wayne Says:

Wayne, they have to set up requirements for candidates to meet, otherwise you’d have two dozen canditates at each debate.
    Comment by Wilco — January 8, 2008 @ 12:00 pm

Wrong, they do not HAVE TO. They CHOOSE TO exclude, thus denying the voters their CHOICE.

  31. Wilco Says:

Joe, follow the post. The link is there. Ex is right.

  32. Fred Says:

Okay, ThinkProgress, you are really going to have to learn how wire services like AP and Reuters work….

We just can’t tell you how excited we are to have you here to edumacate us on how things are……

It just doesn’t matter…it’s faux and that says it all….

  33. hellinabucket Says:

Glad to hear Fox made the correction. Exley is correct on this.

  34. Exley Says:

    #33, Thany you, Wilco.

  35. Starve-A-Bush_Feed-A-Beaver Says:

“We report. We decide.” Fox wants to be a decider, too. They want to decide what reality to tell the braindead viewer they are living in.

  36. Lefty Patriot Says:

  41. Exley Says:

And thank you, HiB (Technically, though, it is not a “correction.” They simply posted the updated story as it came in from AP).

  42. joe cantwell Says:

    Comment by Max-1 — January 8, 2008 @ 12:08 pm

    wilco, your thoughts?

  43. Wilco Says:

Wayne, I disagree. Sure, the networks don’t have to do anything. They choose. But they’re not denying voters anything. We all have research tools at our disposal. Anyone can go online and find any number of candidates to check out. It isn’t the networks responsibility to get every candidate into every tv in every home in America.

  44. Exley Says:

#41, HiB, To tell you the truth, I don’t know. I would hope so.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. You and Wilco have acknowledged that ThinkProgress was wrong. We haven’t seen ThinkProgress itself acknowledge that yet.

  45. Wilco Says:

Joe, I absolutely agree. There is no democracy without rig-free elections.

  46. gummitch Says:

Exley, do you think you would see the same type of responses on a right wing website? Would they be admitting an error when it’s pointed out?

    Comment by hellinabucket — January 8, 2008 @ 12:08 pm

When you start setting the bar for a progressive site that low, you’re not doing anyone any service at all.

Exley is correct (ack!) and TP should either correct the post or issue an update that acknowledges the error. He’s also correct (ack!!!) about the use of wire service stories. Admitting to an error, especially an error reached hastily, is never wrong.

  47. Lefty Patriot Says:

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. You and Wilco have acknowledged that ThinkProgress was wrong. We haven’t seen ThinkProgress itself acknowledge that yet.

  48. hellinabucket Says:

    Well said gunmitch.

Here’s the complete list of presidential candidates (why so many would be wanting the job is beyond me)

  49. Exley Says:

Thank you, Gummitch…I realize that was very difficult for you. :)

  50. Lefty Patriot Says:

Exactly…..where is annie when you need her. she said something the other day about “excuse me while I hack up a hairball”…..seems to cover my sentiment on this issue…we are talking about faux after all….gimme a break

  55. Wilco Says:

    Joe,

“Fair and Balanced” is just a slogan. You’re absolutely right. And a funny slogan at that.

  56. Wayne Says:

It isn’t the networks responsibility to get every candidate into every tv in every home in America.

    Comment by Wilco — January 8, 2008 @ 12:09 pm

The airwaves are public property. And yes it is the responsibility of the press to fairly report and give equal time.

If we did hear from all voices, we would not have the lackluster “frontrunner” media darlings as our only choice.

I cannot believe you defend how the media has been subverting the democratic process. Unbelieveable.

  57. Leftside Annie Says:

The irony here is so delicious that I had it for dessert last night. ;o)

  58. Wilco Says:

Max, I hope that’s not true. I believe it’s not true, but I’m holding on by a thin strand, I think.

  59. hellinabucket Says:

Lefty, you are making a mountain out of a mole hill. I can guarantee that I will be on the opposite side of most issues with Exley. But I’m not going to fight on something as small as this omission.

I save my ammo for substanitive issues.

  60. joe cantwell Says:

    Comment by Wayne — January 8, 2008 @ 12:21 pm

he’s right wilco. it’s called “the public trust doctrine”.

it’s lengthy but here it is:

    http://www.mttlr.org/volten/Ryan.pdf

networks are licensed and review. it is their responsibility to operate “in and for the public trust”. people forget that and they shouldn’t. the airwaves are ours not theirs.

  61. Leftside Annie Says:

    56 - I yark up a hairball *every* time I watch FUX. ;o)

    ~A

  62. Wilco Says:

I’m not defending any subverting of the democratic process. I have no idea where you got that from.
I do think it naive to believe that the front runners wouldn’t be front runners if everyone had equal time. Kucinich, Gravel, et al, will never have the political clout or connections to raise the kind of money necessary to run a successful campaign. That’s the fact of it. Money talks. Money largely determines who wins.
That’s the sad truth of it all.

  63. deebaser Says:

Can we get an “UPDATE: Whoops.” please?

  64. Exley Says:

    #61 HiB,

“I can guarantee that I will be on the opposite side of most issues with Exley.”

True, but our disagreements are (almost) always expressed in a civil and respectful manner.

Still no correction or update from ThinkProgress…Oh, the irony!

  65. Wilco Says:

Joe, again, you’re right. But does that effect debates? It doesn’t seem to. Otherwise, they would have every candidate on, regardless of viability, and regardless of party. Every last party should have just as many aired debates as all the others. So how can networks get away with this year after year after year?

  66. Wilco Says:

Ex, it’s not at all ironic. TP isn’t a news site. It’s unfair to expect immediate updates from them, especially since they employ very light moderation.

  67. Veritas Says:

The hypocrisy of Fox News is legion! The fact is that Ron Paul won the debate according to FaceBook this past week and on the previous Fox News debate was clearly the winner. This propagandist arm of the GOP is losing credibility by the hour. Sean Hannity is being harassed in public and it’s going to get worse for the members of this fascist propagandist operation as the people see through their con jobs.

  68. joe cantwell Says:

    this isn’t about “every candidate”.

ron paul has out fund raised and leads rudy in the polls.

now i don’t claim to be a journalist but even i realize that those two facts alone entitle him to a seat at the table.

    right?

his supporters have a legitimate gripe with fox.

  69. Veritas Says:

Isn’t it amazing what lengths a group of frauds will go to in order to rewrite the history?? Amazingly and transparently fraudulent - Fox News. Soon they’ll be off the air due to lack of sponsorship and viewers.

Get your official FOX BLOCKER today and make a statement against this fascist propagandist/enemy enabling organization.

  70. Exley Says:

    #68,

Fair enough, Wilco. Fair enough … But if they are honest, at some point today they should issue a correction or update.

  71. deebaser Says:

    #72. Agreed

  72. Veritas Says:

What I fail to comprehend on the national level is how a known thug like Giuliani who has zippo experience except being mayor of a town leads in the polls…..who’s being polled here? Surely, Ron Paul is outshining Rudy at this point with his popularity among independents?? Of course, they don’t want to acknowledge the I’s but have to today since NH is comprised of some 44% Independent voters. Love it!

Also, when they determine the “frontrunner” of the GOP, keep in mind that this 30+ percent is really equal to a very insigificant portion of the population in NH - If there are 44% I’s and 36% Dems, then the GOP frontrunner is garnering 30% of a mere twenty percent (20%!!!!) of voters in NH…..a pretty paltry number of people.

This is how the media attempts to scramble our brains. Be not fooled.

  73. Wilco Says:

Ex, I agree with you there. I don’t know if they’ll be checking up on this story, so you might want to contact them to let them know.

  74. Veritas Says:

As I’ve said previously and will reiterate: The Independent Voters absolutely WILL determine the winner of our next presidential election.

  75. Xisithrus Says:

  77. Veritas Says:

Plausible deniability, folks - regarding the intentional “oversight” on the part of Faux News with regard to elimination of Ron Paul. Wake up and smell the coffee. No one needs an update here who has more than a room temp IQ. Fox’s reputation preceeds them and the people are aware of their con games. don’t waste your breath, trolls.

  78. Veritas Says:

I see that, thanks to troll detritus, this thread has become a boring, inane exercise in mental masturbation - once again!

  79. Xisithrus Says:

Nice try Exley, but you should be talking to Newshounds for a correction and then when they correct THEIRS post this thread will reflect THEIR correction.

I dont watch FIX News, but I think they should not be ignoring Paul as it makes them look unfair and unbalanced.

  88. Wilco Says:

Frosty, that makes more sense since they’re both Libertarians.

  89. Xisithrus Says:

Having Paul on to talk to Hannity is not the same as a Presidential debate GG.

  90. Fred Says:

  97. Bullsmith Says:

When Fox adds the word “Only” they don’t just leave Mr. Paul out of the article, they actively state that he has not passed through the state. They lie, openly and maliciously, to the detriment of a Presidential candidate.

It’s almost a trivial change to the article, but it’s incredibly anti-democratic. This is no accident and it’s a crime against the very idea of a free elections. Republicans should be especially furious that Fox would lie to them about their candidates actions.

  98. shoeless Says:

It gives me a weird sort of grim joy, watching the Republican network disenfranchise some of its own voters.

    Comment by Frosty Cupcake

Me too. Fox News hitched their wagon to the wrong horse when they became the Dubya Propaganda Network. It may have seemed like a good business move back in 2001, but now they have reduced their available possible viewership to those 24% deadender, and the news is so bad for Dubya that they are limited to stories about the Spears sisters and the missing blond of the week..

  99. shoeless Says:

Republicans should be especially furious that Fox would lie to them about their candidates actions.

    Comment by Bullsmith

Yes, it just not right that Fox would lie about Republicans. Every Republican knows that Fox is only supposed to lie about Democrats.

  100. Wilco Says:

good golly, if you haven’t contacted them about their error, please stop complaining.

  101. shoeless Says:

    Right gg,

Other than the fact that they agree on a single issue out of thousands (the war on terror in Iraq), it is ironic that Progressives would be so obsessed with a man on the far, fringe right (Libertarian) that disagrees with almost everything else that Progressives support.

No more ironic than your presence here, goon_golly. Or no more ironic than your desperate attempt to marginalize Ron Paul, who represents a substantial number of Republicans in everything but that single issue. Why are you so afraid of him?

No they don’t get it…..they need rehab to get off the kool aid.

They might as well not even run a repub for president as they couldn’t get raygun elected right now.

  109. gummitch Says:

    115. No shoeless. It was intentional so that there could be a more serious debate focusing on those that have sufficient national support in the polls to indicate that have a reasonable chance to win. At 3 to 4%, Ron Paul does not have sufficient national support, and no realistic chance of winning.

One might argue that the purpose of debates is to air issues important to the American people, but that would suggest an interest in democracy that apparently eludes you.

This early in the primaries, what gives you the right to determine what is realistic? And why this rush to eliminate anyone? Why do you hate the democratic process?

whatever. Get off the juice man……rehab will help. What is the matter? No health insurance?

  111. Fred Says:

    116. Fox is hardly being destroyed. It is destroying the competition according to numbers reported yesterday by Nielsen.

you gotta be a masochist to come here and defend faux…..what a moron.

  112. RUCerious Says:

Wow, more dishonest shit from Faux Snooze.

Who could have predicted they’s keep up the faux reporting?

  113. Fred Says:

From what I have seen, Fox has given Ron Paul far more air time than any of the other networks.

    who cares?

  114. Guido OBGYN Lover Says:

    Wow

Fox really is State Sponsored TV~

  115. shoeless Says:

From what I have seen, Fox has given Brittany Spears far more air time than any of the other networks.

    Maybe except the Court channel?

  117. shoeless Says:

Yeah, I’m sure most of the Fox News zombies will write in a vote for Bush.

  118. katy Says:

i just heard some pre-polling reports on AP radio news…

this “undecided” woman said “i was thinking of going democratic…
    i’m an independent… but i think i’ll go republican… i won’t know
    till i get in there”…

yea right… how screwed up is THAT?
that kind is no more “independent” than dubby is…

  119. Exley Says:

Nice job on the Update and correction, ThinkProgress. Thank you.

Good_golly, you really need to give credit where credit is due. TP really stepped up to the plate.

No Good Golly, it is rather simple. The ability to get ideas in the open is a foundational part of democracy (or even for a republic such as the USA).

Any time a viable idea is censored, we all loose.

  121. mr.frazzlebottom Says:

How could anyone now not doubt that Fox Un-News (Un-fair, Un-balanced) is really just a GOP front?

  122. mr.frazzlebottom Says:

    fuk. i missed the update.

  123. mjseydel Says:

I’m thankful that I have enough faith in my intelligence that I would never fall for such a tactic by an organization as unfair and unbalanced as Fox News.

I would not believe anything they said about Ron Paul at this point. He is, indeed, a threat to their interests.
