9 U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq in past two days.

The U.S. military announced today that nine soldiers were killed in the past two days as American forces engaged in a new drive to kill and capture insurgents in the Iraqi province of Diyala. On Tuesday, three soldiers were killed and two were wounded while “six soldiers were killed and four were wounded Wednesday in a booby-trapped house.”

Evidently they were killed by the ghost of alQaeda. Because the pentagon announced this is a operation to RECLAIM territory now controlled by alQaeda. The reason I say ghost is because months ago bush announced the annihilation of the mythic group.

What is wrong with this picture? When you go to the Vietnam Wall Memorial site you will see death casualties were still being added in 1980, years after that so called war ended… giving an estimated total of 58,000 deaths.
When you go to the present DOD death casualty site, the only deaths reported are those that died on Iraqi soil… never mind the ones that died en route to the hospital, after arriving at the hospital or years later.

No, Zooey, I have no problem with the truth. But if TP is going to trumpet “Hey, look at all these dead soldiers during the most recent offensive over the last two days”, shouldn’t they also – in the interest of the truth you claim to seek – have a thread that addresses the precipitous drop in US casualties in the month of December?

  21. williamf says:

There is a bunch of pain behind this for all of the families who lost their kids. For years they will suffer the loss. The soldiers who went and did their job are to be saluted for their courage. It is the commander in chief that did not give them an honorable cause to die for other than trying as best they can to make sure their buddies get home. These troops did their duty. May George Bush live the remainder of his life with the blood of all of our soldiers, sailors, marines, and airman on his hands and may he one day wake up to what he has done. I give thanks for our courageous servicemen and women and I curse George Bush, Dick Cheney, and all of those that put these fine people in the shitstorm that is Iraq.

Keltoi #29, Four years and ten months ago, Bush invaded Iraq – against international law – while UN Inspectors were searching for WMD. Of course, he had to kick the UN Inspectors out of Iraq to launch his invasion on 3/19/03 — Shock & Awe. Do these details sound familiar to you?

As we know, the Iraqi INSURGENCY started immediately and Iraqis across the country attacked US forces as a foreign military occupation force. (See the documentary “Meeting Resistance” by Steve Connors and Molly Bingham for details).

Keltoi, we are talking about an insurgency, which is well beyond US control. We are all thrilled that US deaths were low in December. But it now appears that the insurgents are willing and ready to escalate attacks once again. Your lack of knowledge about how insurgents strike is very obvious. And your contempt for our troops in harms way — because of Bush’s disastrous invasion and occupation of Iraq — is despicable.

Why, so you clowns can use it for political gain? a “precipitous drop” in casualties? what a load. Deadliest year to date, for Americans and Iraqis, and no sign of a letup. But your December figures are down a little, so lets make the warmongering mass-murderers look good. Boo-hoo, TP reports that soldiers have been killed, how partisan of them.

Suck on it, Keltoi, nobody’s buying your bullshit spin any more. You want to celebrate the deaths of the troops, do it on your own blog.

The offensive — which has been centered near Muqdadiya — has left 20 to 30 suspected insurgents dead in the area around that city. About 24,000 U.S. troops, 50,000 Iraqi soldiers and 80,000 local police are based in the region. With an offensive this wide spread, don’t be surprised to see more casualties in the coming days.

Bush and the republicans have turned our troops into criminals, and have abused and neglected them as well. i want them home, with their families, bit it’s too late. they will come home with nightmares and trauma and stress, and they will do great harm to their loved ones and themselves, and you will sit by and do nothing. 47. Sabyen91 says:

These are the guys that still believe the WMD were moved to Syria (after it was proved that they were no longer in Iraq, of course). They will believe anything, won’t they?

  48. DanCaveman says:

    good_golly,

Forgive me if I don’t get excited about your “operation” theory of increasing and decreasing violence and deaths. Forgive me if I do not share the optimism that Iraq will suddenly change because of these wonderful “operations”. I have news for you. This is nothing new. I know because I went on 50 – 60 (or more) of them at the end of 2004 and 2005.

The fact is, we make more enemies than we catch/kill.
The fact is that the surge began in January and was supposed to last a MAXIMUM of 6 months.
The fact is that we are overextending the military without asking ANY OTHER AMERICAN CITIZEN TO SACRIFICE OR ASSIST IN THE CAUSE.
The fact is, that is is more important to keep the war at a distance because there would be ZERO support otherwise.
The fact is, I have friends going back for their 4-5 times so that all the cheerleaders can still sit on the sidelines and try to find ways to put a positive spin on 5 years of “War” in Iraq.
The Fact is, they are clearing the same places over and over again.
The fact is, that the power plant in my AO that was non-operational then is STILL non-operational.
The Fact is, the AO that I was in still does NOT have clean water after FIVE years of “reconstruction”.
The fact is, they still do not have a good waste or sewage system after 5 years of “reconstruction”.
The fact is, the Iraqis DON’T want us there and it is THEIR country.
The fact is, Americans would not tolerate a foreign country invading and staying for 5 years.
The fact is, we are calling Iraqis doing the same things that the US Citizens would be doing if we were occupied “terrorists”.

I could go on and on. You may be able to argue a single point here an there; however, when you put them all together there is no doubt that Iraq is not going well. Each time we reach a deadline set by the pundits and politicians (Republican), the goal posts get moved and smoke an mirrors get us focused on something else. You can’t fight desperate people by making more people desperate and destitute.

The death toll would not be an issue if this was necessary, but the fact that President Bush is unwilling to institute a draft – that all the military GENERALS have indicated is necessary to keep up troop strength – is proof they they don’t believe this occupation is SOOOO essential either.

The death toll is important because IT IS UNNECESSARY. Even one death of our brave men and women in uniform tragic when it is unnecessary!

But go ahead, make yourself feel better by labeling me and others as “hating the troops”. Go ahead and change the focus and do you slight of hand. Just remember:

I support NOT sending injured troops back into combat.
I support getting our troops out of harms way.
I support giving our troops the rest they need and deserve.
I support a draft if we insist on continuing this war.
I insist on proper health care for our wounded veterans.
I support better job protections for families that need to spend time with their wounded veterans.
I supported listening to the Generals about the troops levels if we insist to stay. (Petaeus’ own insurgency manual says 1 troop for every 40 civilians – works out to approximately the estimates of General Shinseki that were ignored by Bush)
[again I could go on and on]

The administration and party you support has voted and blocked all these things.

  49. DanCaveman says:

    good_golly,

How about this good news story. Didn’t hear much about it in the press.

Attacks against British and Iraqi forces have plunged by 90 percent in southern Iraq since London withdrew its troops from the main city of Basra, the commander of British forces there said Thursday.

The presence of British forces in downtown Basra, Iraq’s second-largest city, was the single largest instigator of violence, Maj. Gen. Graham Binns told reporters Thursday on a visit to Baghdad’s Green Zone.

“We thought, ‘If 90 percent of the violence is directed at us, what would happen if we stepped back?’” Binns said.
