The Washington Post’s Al Kamen reports that U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Zalmay Khalilzad may be thinking of running for president of Afghanistan in the fall of 2009:
Honest. This is a real rumor. So real that we hear Afghan President Hamid Karzai asked Khalilzad about it when the two met in London back in October. But Khalilzad didn’t give a Shermanesque response.
Another U.N. official asked him to say no more definitively, but Khalilzad declined, another official told our colleague Colum Lynch.
election? you mean SELECTION…..
that would be as legit as bush winning the peace prize.
January 9th, 2008 at 10:02 amKarzai’s Bro has an Afghan restaurant in Columbia, MD. Not bad eats. And no, I’m not joking. http://www.tshirtinsurgency.com
January 9th, 2008 at 10:04 amThis is a huge surprise!
January 9th, 2008 at 10:06 amI really thought GDumbya was going to “install” Chalabi or Curve Ball.
And Khalilzad isn’t going to look like a blatant U.S. puppet —— HOW???
January 9th, 2008 at 10:16 amWinning hearts and minds, one imperialist move at a time.
January 9th, 2008 at 10:18 amWhat better way for a country to develop a US-style democracy than by getting one of our own as president?
I really hope this isn’t true…
January 9th, 2008 at 10:25 amI’m dead certain that he’d be welcomed by the Afghan people with flowers and candy!

January 9th, 2008 at 10:34 am3 – No, Tom – those guys are for IRAQ.
January 9th, 2008 at 10:35 amThis would not be an election, it would be an appointment.
January 9th, 2008 at 10:53 amWe already installed former Unocal man, Karzai, and now we will attempt to install another puppet.
Tali – bang! Why would Khalilzad have a death wish that pronounced?
January 9th, 2008 at 11:08 amYou know, sometimes you just can’t get the puppet to perform the way you want him to and you have to cut the strings, sweep him off the stage and perform the role yourself.
January 9th, 2008 at 11:24 amCHANGE! Maybe Paul Wolfowitz for Vice President!
When is Richard Perle going to run for Dictator of Syria?

January 9th, 2008 at 11:43 amI say let George W. Bush be President. Now we know the GOP will appoint the person they want and fix the ballots. Cheney needs a spy to keep things going and counter act any progress the New American President wants to do.
Karzai was appointed by the Bush Administration not the people, now Khalilzad will be appointed as a puppet replacement. Someone has to keep an eye on the corruption and stealing of the Afghan country. With a new American President things might be made better and Bush/Cheney can’t have that happen.

LIke Saddam, although that is not going too well.
January 9th, 2008 at 2:20 pmSo, which is it – you needn’t be an American to be an American ambassador; or you don’t have to be an Afghanistani to be their president?
January 9th, 2008 at 5:27 pmBush should run for President of Iraq. You know he’s just itching to dress up in a military uniform with a beret, live in a palace, and shoot Saddam’s pistol in the air.
