Giuliani: New York City Survived 9/11 Attacks Because Of Me

In a Wall Street Journal op-ed today on homeland security, Rudy Giuliani references September 11 nine separate times. In one of those instances, he claims he prepared New York City well to “withstand the 9/11 attack“:

One reason New York City was able to withstand the 9/11 attack was that we were prepared to meet 21st-century security threats. … And while we didn’t anticipate the specific scenario of 9/11, the constant practice, and the relentless follow-up from actual emergencies, certainly helped in its aftermath.

Jim Riches, a deputy New York City fire chief who lost a son at the Trade Center, has a very different perspective:

“Lives were lost because of the lack of preparation and (Giuliani’s) lack of leadership,” said Riches, who spent 16 days in a coma after the attacks due to respiratory failure. “All he did was run that day, and get on TV and provide a calming influence for the United States of America. And they made him a hero.”

Because of Giuliani’s failures, first responders were forced to use old radio equipment on 9/11 that prevented them from hearing evacuation orders when the World Trade Center buildings were about to collapse. The radios had malfunctioned eight years earlier, during the 1993 attacks on the WTC.

Giuliani claimed last month, “It would have been impossible for me to have those radios ready.” It would not have been impossible. After the 1993 incident, Giuliani gave Motorola a $14-million no-bid contract to produce faulty radios that had to be taken out of service in March 2001. Brave New Films released this web video detailing the negative impact Giuliani’s no-bid decision had on firefighters on 9/11. Watch it:

9/11 first responders have not only criticized Giuliani for failing to provide them with proper radios, but also for ditching body-recovery efforts only 24 hours after recovering tens of millions of dollars in gold and for misleading them about the air quality at Ground Zero.

Digg It!

Funny, I didn’t see any of those buildings “withstand” their destruction. Okay, NYC didn’t sink into the sea but I doubt if that had anything to do with Giuliani.

You’d think by now his advisors would tell him to shut his mouth about 9/11 because it has to be annoying the crap out of his supporters and critics by now.

  10. PatrioticLiberalChristian says:

Actually, Rudy just probably got his noun, verb, and 911 in the wrong order. What he meant to say is “I survive because of 911″.

  13. Chuck Feney says:

In the video it is stated that the police’s radios worked; and, no police died. So, what kind of radio did they have? And, why wouldn’t the fire department not use the same manufacturer? Are the police’s radios Motorola or not?

At the risk of getting banned, I must ask: Why does TP continue to repeatedly use misleading headlines? The term Rudy used was “WE” not “ME.”

This from the fool living in the back country of New Mexico, who hasn’t even a clue about what it’s like to live in a city, much less run one.

Carefully avoiding any of the substance of the criticism, Bigfoot reaches for the most desperate of whines: you can’t say bad things about Rudy because you’re not a mayor. What are you, Bigfoot, 12?

I have no doubt that running a city the size of New York has its challenges, but that’s not the point here.

The point is that we have this blowhard running for President of the United States, and he is touting only his performance in the aftermath of a shocking and tragic terrorist attack as his qualification for the job. And his performance wasn’t spectacular — it was mediocre. Any number of people could have done a better job.

And that aside, the man cannot speak about ANY issue without invoking 9/11. This has made him a parody of himself. How can anybody possibly take him seriously?

Curious though, why do you spend so much time hammering a candidate who has only garnered support similar to Ron Paul in documentable contests so far? Just need something negative to talk about?

    Comment by O. Bigfoot — January 9, 2008 @ 11:07 am

So says the mythical hairy beast that logs on merely to negatively comment on OTHER people’s comments. Pot, kettle, and all that.

Has anyone mentioned lately how profundly stupid O. Bigfoot is?

Back on topic, I know, few agree with me, but the more Rudy mentions 9/11, the more I really think it’s PTSD on a grand scale, combined with a guy who already had a profound ego to begin with. It’s a disorder that manifests itself in different ways – it’s not always lashing out or hiding under beds or thinking your hospital orderly is “Charlie” coming to get ya. People with PTSD can still function in society or in their job (which is why it’s often not diagnosed or suspected), but sooner or later, it breaks the person suffering from it if he or she doesn’t get help.

For once, I can give O. Bigfoot on ONE point – since none of us have ever been mayor of a big city (I assume), no one will know how we would handle the stresses inherent in that job, even when not dealing with a terrorist attack. But the fact that Rudy put on his brave face in the days immediately after 9/11 doesn’t change the fact that his behaviour has become more and more flighty SINCE the aftermath (in other words bigfoot-in-yo’-mouth, you proved the opposite of your intended point – the fact that he a terrorist attack on his city has effed him up so badly proves he doesn’t have the emotional werewithal to handle the highest office in the land were there to be another attack, so it’s best if he goes away).

Rudy’s still living 9/11, whether it’s because he can’t get over the terror or he still yearns for the accolades. His campaign erosion is a boon for America, because you don’t want someone like that with access to the buttont the moment they finally snap.

  30. Veritas says:

  35. Veritas says:

slappy magoo: I agree with the content of your post; however, I am from that area and maintain contact with many New Yorkers today and “their” take on Rudy is far from anything he’s saying or our fascist-complicit press reports or did report during that time. In fact, should Rudy become the candidate, the people of NY are organizing swiftboating ads the likes of which this country has not yet seen. It’s been reported that Rudy ran the other way, in point of fact. The firefighters and first responders on the scene have a diametrically opposite story to narrate when/if they will have their crack at Rudy.

  36. Nature Rules says:

And yet BigAss just yesterday was damn sure that Rudy would do a better job with national security than any of the Democrat candidates. How can you have extraordinary vision on one hand and yet blind to the facts of how poorly Rudy ran the emergency systems.

  38. Veritas says:

Kay: I believe it speaks volumes for how far down the rabbit hole (or $hithole as the case may really be!) this country has slid, thanks to this abominable administration. The fact that a known mafioso thug like Rudy Giuliani is being pushed to the fore as a GOP candidate tells the story on why the GOP is tanking faster than the Titanic. What are they down to now? 24%?? And 50% of that 24% are anti-Bush.

I fail to see who’s really propping Rudy up since he doesn’t have much of a following nationally. I believe that our fascist press has decided that they will be the ones to elect our next president which is why Edwards’ successes are downplayed. He’d go after their jugular if he would win!

It’s interesting to note that it is apparently OK to approve of someone even though you’ve never been mayor of a big city, but it’s not OK to disapprove of someone . . . no, I can’t even figure out how to parse that one because it is soooooo stupid.

Listen, I think Giuliani did an admiral job as mayor faced with those terrifying acts. His calm demeanor was a welcome site in that chaotic day. But to constantly “whore” himself to 9/11 for political gain (par for the right) is unacceptable, and is the reason why I would never vote for him.

  52. slappy magoo says:

    veritas,

I live @ the Jersey Shore, work on 50th street, and the only reason I wasn’t in NYC on 9/11 was I had vacation days I had to “use or lose.” So I’m familiar with all the concerns people have with Rudy, and the stories of what (supposedly) REALLY happened that day, as well as what his propronents like to consider his strengths. I’ve seen the Greenwald “opposite of ‘Swift Boat’ because it’s the truth” film with the First Responders, and have no doubt plenty of people will be quick to tear Rudy a new one, early and often, were he to get the nomination (whether the media does anything to assist getting the message out is another question).

It doesn’t change my increasing opinion that the guy’s suffering from PTSD. In fact, if he did run away and then covered his ass as quickly as possible to come across as heroic, that would only firm up my opinion for me. The idea that he could be overcompensating for not “really” being the hero he’s been making himself out to be makes a lot of sense to me.

I’m drawing a total brain fart on the novel’s title, but in high school, we were assigned a novel to read about a French lawyer taking a lazy picnic one afternoon when he sees a woman drowning. He’s so relaxed, he doesn’t do anything to stop it, he’s not even fully aware it’s actually happening (you know the Franch and their “picnics” glug glug). Anyway, a local idiot is accused of killing the woman, though the lawyer (vaguely) knows the death was accidental. But between all the townspeope crying out for some kind of justice, for the lawyer to be a hero and vindicate the dead girl’s spirit, AND the lawyer’s tremendouds guilt for not saving the woman in the first place, he successfully prosecutes the innocent man, up to the point very end of the story, where he gets the prosecuted the death penalty.

I dunno, what’s happening to Rudy just reminds me of that story, on a much grander, more frightening scale.

Freedom is about the willingness of every single human being to cede to lawful authority a great deal of discretion about what you do.”

He is an awful human being.

  65. Jeremy in Denver says:

Sure, JDC. Because the terrorists who flew the planes into the buildings are bad, everyone on the other side of the equation is good. Sorry, boyo. It don’t work like that.

Imagine a world in which Bush listened to the pre-war intelligence that suggested an attack was imminent. Imagine a world where Bush treated this as a police matter and got OBL (smashing through Afghanistan) and let diplomacy work on Iraq. Imagine a world where the firefighters had working radios and could communicate with each other and the police dispatch. Imagine a world in which Rudy had been competent and didn’t hand Motorola a contract that ended up falling flat on its face on crunch day.

In short, imagine a world where Republicans are competent. Such a world is not very far removed from our own, but far enough away that none of us will ever reach it. It’d take a science fiction plot device to get us there, because such a world does not exist in our world.

Any of you ever run a city? If so, a city the size of New York?
If not, then you have absolutely no basis in experience from which to speak.
    Comment by O. Bigfoot

Well by extension neither we or Rudy have run the U.S. and have ” absolutely no basis in experience from which to speak”. So I guess we should just let Presidents speak.
Anyone who has spent time in NY before, during, and after Rudy before, during or after IX XI have experience and can speak to what they perceive. My perception being in that category is that parts of NY most tourist oriented in NY before Rudy were becoming seedy. During Rudy some of that was cleaned up but mostly it was just pushed up the street. For example Rudy got the durg dealers and other low life mostly out of Times Square. One had to walk a couple blocks past the garment district to make the deal. After Rudy things have improved much more.
On 9/11 anyone with some math skills can realize that the city of NY wasn’t mortally wounded by this. A couple dozen large buildings in a several block area were destroyed. Hundreds of buildings and most of the boroughs had no damage, and no disruption of their viability. The port, the museums, Broadway, Brooklyn, Central Park, the subways, busses, airports, etc. were up and running as soon as the nationwide hysteria calmed enough. Their disruption was not greater than elsewhere in the country as a whole. The fire department was certainly tragically impacted – some would argue due to Rudy’s bad prior decisions, but even their only a small part of their resources were destroyed and the city had sufficient to cope with the routine of firefighting tasks in the rest of the city. Three thousand of over eight million people sadly lost their lives and twenty times that many were displaced. That represents a far smaller fraction than natural disasters in many parts ofthe counrty routinely cause. Last time I checked NY had long before Rudy had disaster housing and evacuation to deal with moving and dealing with more than the number of displaced persons.
Rudy’s main accomplishment before this tragedy was to get kicked out of the mayor mansion due his cheating. He can’t keep his marriage vows and his experience in failing in his family is that on which he is most qualified.

The issue here isn’t whether Rudy 911 Giuliani ran a city or not but how he’s exploiting that position to imply that he saved the day on September 11 of 2001. He’s claimed to have spent equal time there as the rescuers that worked 16 hour shifts for days on end and that’s been proven to be an outright lie. Granted, people turned to him in a time of need and Time Mag named him “man of the year” but for him to invoke “911″ every other word in an attempt to make himself look like presidential material simply defies dignity. And I don’t care what city he ran.
