dumb question: considering that NY, NY has many bedroom cities, are there parts of the metro area that are more than 1 block from the WTC ?

His continual chest thumping as the guardian of 9/11 is getting more sickening by the day.

My ongoing thoughts and prayers go out to all who lost their lives on that day. My disgust grows for all those who have bastardized it for their own gain.

Well by extension neither we or Rudy have run the U.S. and have ” absolutely no basis in experience from which to speak”. So I guess we should just let Presidents speak.
Anyone who has spent time in NY before, during, and after Rudy before, during or after IX XI have experience and can speak to what they perceive. My perception being in that category is that parts of NY most tourist oriented in NY before Rudy were becoming seedy. During Rudy some of that was cleaned up but mostly it was just pushed up the street. For example Rudy got the durg dealers and other low life mostly out of Times Square. One had to walk a couple blocks past the garment district to make the deal. After Rudy things have improved much more.
On 9/11 anyone with some math skills can realize that the city of NY wasn’t mortally wounded by this. A couple dozen large buildings in a several block area were destroyed. Hundreds of buildings and most of the boroughs had no damage, and no disruption of their viability. The port, the museums, Broadway, Brooklyn, Central Park, the subways, busses, airports, etc. were up and running as soon as the nationwide hysteria calmed enough. Their disruption was not greater than elsewhere in the country as a whole. The fire department was certainly tragically impacted – some would argue due to Rudy’s bad prior decisions, but even their only a small part of their resources were destroyed and the city had sufficient to cope with the routine of firefighting tasks in the rest of the city. Three thousand of over eight million people sadly lost their lives and twenty times that many were displaced. That represents a far smaller fraction than natural disasters in many parts ofthe counrty routinely cause. Last time I checked NY had long before Rudy had disaster housing and evacuation to deal with moving and dealing with more than the number of displaced persons.
Rudy’s main accomplishment before this tragedy was to get kicked out of the mayor mansion due his cheating. He can’t keep his marriage vows and his experience in failing in his family is that on which he is most qualified.

Imagine a world in which Bush listened to the pre-war intelligence that suggested an attack was imminent. Imagine a world where Bush treated this as a police matter and got OBL (smashing through Afghanistan) and let diplomacy work on Iraq. Imagine a world where the firefighters had working radios and could communicate with each other and the police dispatch. Imagine a world in which Rudy had been competent and didn’t hand Motorola a contract that ended up falling flat on its face on crunch day.

In short, imagine a world where Republicans are competent. Such a world is not very far removed from our own, but far enough away that none of us will ever reach it. It’d take a science fiction plot device to get us there, because such a world does not exist in our world.

(And give me a Quantum Mirror, please. I’ll gladly trade Bush for Hayes even if that came with the threat of annihalation by Goa’uld and/or Ori..)
