Paulson Contradicted By His Former Company Goldman Sachs On Economic Recession

On Monday, President Bush said the United States currently has “a resilient economy,” an attempt to counter growing fears of a coming recession. Similarly, on Tuesday, White House spokesperson Tony Fratto ignorantly proclaimed, “I don’t know of anyone predicting a recession.”

Yesterday on CNBC, Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson also downplayed talk of a recession, giving assurances that economic growth will continue. At the same time, however, he refused to directly deny whether there is a recession:

PAULSON: [T]he economic data is mixed. We’re watching this very closely. I said I think that we’re facing some strong headwinds, but the economy’s going to continue to grow. [...]

Q: So people who think we’re in a recession have it wrong? They’re not seeing the real picture right now?

PAULSON: I simply said that, we grew at five percent in the third quarter, almost five percent in the third quarter. Again, spending was strong, right up through the fall. There’s some concerns, There’s some [inaudible]. There’s some mixed economic data, and we’re watching it very closely right now.

Watch it:

But today, “Goldman Sachs became the latest Wall Street firm to predict that the U.S. economy will drop into recession this year.” As AmericaBlog observes, prior to taking his job in the Bush administration, Paulson was the CEO of Goldman Sachs. CNBC reports:

“Over the past few months, we have become increasingly concerned that the US housing and credit market downturn would trigger not just a growth slowdown and substantial Fed easing — our long-standing view — but also an outright recession,” Goldman Sachs said in a note to clients Wednesday. “The latest data suggest that recession has now arrived, or will very shortly.”

Merrill Lynch has also stated that “Friday’s employment report, which sent shares tumbling worldwide, confirmed that the US is in the first month of a recession.”

Transcript:

Q: Secretary, there are some people who believe we’ve already headed into a recession. In your seat, what do you think of that view.

PAULSON: Well I just told you that I think the economic data is mixed. We’re watching this very closely. I said I think that we’re facing some strong headwinds, but the economy’s going to continue to grow.

Q: Continues to grow — that’s not a recession.

PAULSON: And the other thing we said. And I think you’ve heard the president. He indicated that he’s thinking through options. And so you know, we’re considering various options to do everything we can to keep this economy growing.

Yes, Moneybags Paulson can give his sales pitch that the economy is growing all he wants. Check Paulson’s bank account, portfolio, the growth in his shares at Goldman Sachs, and the 3rd and 4th quarter earnings at Goldman Sachs. Paulson is just pissed because Merrill Lynch called a spade a spade.

This is a bullsh1t post. Bloomberg News, top story at the moment, is this:

    http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=aEX73qWiBrb4&refer=home

Economists put the odds of a recession developing within the next year at 40 percent, according to the median estimate. Nine of the 47 economists responding to the question put the odds at about even and five said the economy would contract.

Martin Feldstein and Larry Summers have put the odds of a recession at better than 50-50, but Paul Krugman for one has stopped short of predicting a recession.

Look, this is not an exact science, the answers are not black-and-white, but Paulson’s view is hardly indefensible. You might think he is wrong – I do – but dropping this post under “incompetent establishment” is just wingnut-style hyperbole.

    1. Bush says we are winning in Iraq, experts say no we are not.

    3. Bush says the economy is strong, experts say we are already in a recession.
    4. Bush says we don’t torture, but we do.
    5. bush says he is for peace, after invading two soverign nations.
    6. Bush says he woulkd like to see peace in the ME, but he ignores the Israeli/Palestinian situation for years.
    7. bush says the housing crunch is not so bad, but mortgage companies are scrambling to write off their bad debt.
    8. Bush says telecom’s need immunity, even though he says they did nothing wrong.
    9. etc, etc, etc…

I could go on and on, but you get the point: bush is a liar. his administration is filled with liars. Even when the evidence is over whelming, bush stills send out his henchmen to tell us otherwise.

How do you know when bush is lying? When he speaks.

  21. Jackie says:

Paulson was put in position to do just what he’s doing lying openly. Now notice how Goldman Sachs is getting big profits while others are losing. It’s because Goldman Sachs is in business with the White House corrupt team. Goldman Sachs was given inside information about sub prime when Bush/Cheney took office. Notice how Goldman Sachs stepped aside as the big sub prime was selling now you know the reason. It was known it would fail and homes/money would be lost. So Goldman Sachs waited and used the NSA spying to see what companies would get in trouble as an easy take over. Paul O’Neill told the White House what he saw as a future crime and they fired him. Paulson is bleeding every cent out of businesses and the American people while lying for the White House. Even a blind person can see we’re in a recession right now. But Paulson believe idiots will follow what ever he says until they sink. The Bush base is a clear example of following blindly until it’s to late.

Comment by the Lone Voice of Reason

What we are seeing today is nothing compared to what we will see when the bill becomes due for the war. Bush has put everything on the credit card so citizens don’t feel the pinch or the pain. The growing debt service on that credit card will be enormous and many, many social safety nets will be ‘reformed’ to free up money to pay that debt.

Also, keep in mind the money in the social security trust fund is not there either. The government uses the surplus to bolster its books. They put IOU’s in the trust fund, instead of actual money – so those funds will also have to be replenished greatly as the boomers retire.

Folks, listen: It is going to get very, very bad before it begins to get better. If you don’t have your own financial house in order – and you are approaching your mid 40’s or so – please start now.

If we “talk down” the economy enough and slip into recession, it will be the most predicted one in history. History reminds us that smarty-pants economic prognosticators have predicted about 90-100 of the last 10 recessions.
    Comment by good_golly

goon_golly thinks that we will create a recession just by talking about it. It doesn’t matter that we have a crisis in our housing industry, anemic job growth and what job growth there is comprises low-paying service jobs, the dollar is in free fall and gasoline has gone over $100 a barrel. Sounds like a booming economy to me.

I live in Oregon, in a fairly wealthy town. Everyone I talk to is having a hard time making ends meet and know we are in a recession. If the financial underpinnings aren’t there for a recession, there is no way we can “talk” our way into one.

I went to the store the other day to get a few things for dinner at my local Krogers. I buy just about everything that is Kroger plus, so i see a little savings there. But it costed me over $50 to buy the same amount of groceries I could have spent $30 on 6-7 years ago.

Another addiction, almost.

I’d say more than the numbers you gave.

Back in 2002, I would go to the store for myself, to pick up groceries. I’d pick up 4 bags full, enough to feed me for 2 weeks. During that time, I’d end up spending, oh, $20 or so for all of that. I didn’t eat like a king, but I ate well. Now, I find fruits getting to the point that I can’t get my fill of them, milk’s out-freaking rageous, and pizza, my staple food, is to the point that I have to choose between quality and price. My body rebelled, so I’m now paying $40 a WEEK for food. I did move to Colorado, yes, but the prices were not that bad when we first moved up here. It was only after the Iraq war that prices got really bad.

2003, gas was on the cheaper side of $1.50 a gallon. Today, I’m seeing $3.00+ a gallon for gas all over the place. Congrats, Dubya. We have forgone a car because of this.

*sigh* I am not yet ready to say Great Depression of the 21st Century, but god damn it, if we put any of the Republican Ticket in office in 2009, I don’t think even escaping to JAPAN will save us.

  60. Starve-A-Bush_Feed-A-Beaver says:

Yeah, I know the feeling of regret over selling old guitars. In the 1980s, I was in desperate economic straits and in addition to having to sell my entire coin collection and some vintage cars, I sold a 1960s Gibson Les Paul Junior, a 1962 Gibson ES 335, a 1964 Fender Telecaster, a 1950s Epiphone Broadway jazz box, a 1969 Marshall 100 watt stack, a 1960s Fender Princeton, and my 1960s Sunn stack. I wish I had them today and I’d hate to have to try to buy them back and today’s prices. But now I’ve gone acoustic, playing nylon string guitars on acoustic amps so there’s some consolation in that.

I sat in my house overlooking the beach. My company was doing well. We outsourced 2/3rds of the manufacturing to China. (I did not notice the water going up the beach and rushing against the hill upon which my house was built.)

I sat on the porch looking out at the water. My company was doing great. I cut engineering costs in half by outsourcing most of the engineering to India. (I did not see the water starting to erode the base of the hill upon which my house sat.)

I worked in the kitchen using all of the new gadgets that I bought at Walmart. It saved me so much money even though the Chinese government loaned the US to cover the trade deficit caused by my purchase. (I did not hear the sound of the tide rushing in against the base of my house.)

Now I sit on the sidewalk begging for money. You see, that Indian firm ended up with a better engineered product than I produced. I no longer had the engineering skill to complete. I lost my company. Then I lost my health insurance. The government tells me it is my fault that I no longer have coverage and that with the balance of payments issue that medicaid is being disbanded.

I look back to those days of living in my house on the beach. I was doin well and so were my neighbors.

And the crucial difference is that the goal of the Daily Show is to make people laugh, not report news. Daily Show viewers are SMART, not stupid. FOX is government propaganda, not “news”.

There is no news anymore. There is only corporate lies and word of mouth.

Do you ever think maybe the administration wants to deny a looming recession is not to scare people from spending money in the first place?

Think about it, this housing problem is a farce, it’s mostly played out in the media. 98% of people still pay their mortgages!

The media is a very powerful influence and as a result of all the negativity, people take it to heart and stop consuming.

Lies, all lies. You’re a fool and a tool. and we should slow our consumption down as much as possible, to preserve some of the earth for our grandchildren, and to stop the runaway train of piggish, extreme capitalism, which has become an earth-destroying disease. A few years of modest growth will even the palying field, and drive the greed-mongers out.
We are ridiculous pigs in this country.
