Pentagon Backtracks On Naval Confrontation With Iran, Says Threat May Not Have Come From Iranians»

iranEarlier this week, the Pentagon said that three of its Navy ships in the Strait of Hormuz had been harassed and provoked by Iranian speedboats. The Navy said it had felt so threatened that it was about to open fire on the boats. A four-minute video of the episode provided to the public by the Pentagon contained one particularly harrowing moment:

“I am coming to you,” a heavily accented voice says in English. “You will explode after a few minutes.”

Navy officials said the voice was recorded from the internationally recognized bridge-to-bridge radio channel.

Some bloggers were immediately skeptical, noting the voice did not sound Iranian. Iran released its own video, arguing the footage did not show any Iranian boats approaching the U.S. vessels, nor any provocation. Today, the Navy acknowledged that the verbal threat made in the tape may not have been Iranian:

“We’re saying that we cannot make a direct connection to the boats there,” said the spokesperson. “It could have come from the shore, from another ship passing by. However, it happened in the middle of all the very unusual activity, so as we assess the information and situation, we still put it in the total aggregate of what happened Sunday morning. I guess we’re not saying that it absolutely came from the boats, but we’re not saying it absolutely didn’t.”

Without definitive evidence that it was Iran who was making the provocative verbal threats, Bush nevertheless seized on the episode — just hours before he was set to depart for the Middle East — to underscore “his assertion that the Iranians are capable of acting recklessly.” “We viewed it as a provocative act,” Bush said. Yesterday, he warned Iran, “There will be serious consequences if they attack our ships, pure and simple.”

Newshoggers has more.

UPDATE: At a Pentagon news conference just now, a reporter asked Defense Secretary Robert Gates: “You said yesterday that other similar incidents have occurred. Can you say what about this incident on Sunday was particularly different that created such a stir?” Gates argued there were more Iranian boats this time, and they were “more aggressive.” Watch it:

UPDATE II: Gareth Porter writes, “New information over the past three days suggests that the incident did not involve such a threat and that no U.S. commander was on the verge of firing at the Iranian boats.”

Bush, at a hastily-organised press conference, said: “Iran was dangerous, Iran is dangerous, and Iran will be dangerous if they have the knowledge necessary to drive speed boats.”

Bush, questioned by a reporter who said he looked dispirited, said: “I feel … pretty good about life,” and claimed “nothing’s changed” in relation to the danger posed by Iran. “What’s to say they [the Iranians] couldn’t start a speedboat programme,” the president said.

“Iran is a threat to world peace,” Mr Bush declared. “Iran was a threat, Iran is a threat and Iran will be threat to world peace if the international community does not come together and prevent that nation from the development of the know how to drive speedboats,” he said.

Report reveals Vietnam War hoaxes, faked attacks
Tue Jan 8, 9:45 AM ET
WASHINGTON (AFP) - North Vietnamese made hoax calls to get the US military to bomb its own units during the Vietnam War, according to declassified information that also confirmed US officials faked an incident to escalate the war.

The report was released by the National Security Agency, responsible for much of the United States’ codebreaking and eavesdropping work, in response to a “mandatory declassification” request, the Federation of American Scientists (FAS) said Monday.

From the first intercepted cable — a 1945 message from Vietnamese leader Ho Chi Minh to his Russian counterpart Joseph Stalin — to the final evacuation of US spies from Saigon, the 500-page report retold Vietnam War history from the perspective of “signals intelligence,” the group said in a statement.

  47. Uncle Ho Says:

For anyone who may be knowledgeable about the Tonkin Gulf incident, a brief summery.

The Tonkin Gulf is just off the coast of Vietnam. In 1964, a US destroyer the USS Maddox was cruising around, and was attacked by North Vietnamese PT boats. Shortly after, the Maddox was joined by a another destroyer, the USS C. Turner Joy. Another attack was reported, and LBJ launched retaliatory air strikes in response. LBJ then pushed through the Tonkin Gulf Resolution through Congress with only 2 dissenting votes in the Senate(Wayne Morse & Ernst Gruening). The resolution called for the President to take any measure to “prevent” aggression in SE Asia.(Very much like the resolution granted to W. in 2003 in regards to Iraq)

The 2nd attack NEVER occurred but the administration never came clean about that. They had their desired Congressional approval which was used to greatly expand the war in Vietnam.

The 1st attack happened because the ARVN(South Vietnamese army)was conducting raids on the North at that time. the Maddox was conducting electronic surveillance of the NVA communications during the raid-I.e. in collusion with ARVN in the attacks.

The surveillance was Op Plan 34- DeSoto.

you can read more about it by links: The Pentagon Papers; Tonkin Gulf Resolution; Daniel Ellsberg; Vietnam war; DeSoto? Op Plan 34?

Here is the real truth behind the Iranian “wipe off the map” bongwater:

    Juan Cole:
The phrase he then used as I read it is “The Imam said that this regime occupying Jerusalem (een rezhim-e ishghalgar-e qods) must [vanish from] from the page of time (bayad az safheh-ye ruzgar mahv shavad).”

Ahmadinejad was not making a threat, he was quoting a saying of Khomeini and urging that pro-Palestinian activists in Iran not give up hope– that the occupation of Jerusalem was no more a continued inevitability than had been the hegemony of the Shah’s government.

Whatever this quotation from a decades-old speech of Khomeini may have meant, Ahmadinejad did not say that “Israel must be wiped off the map” with the implication that phrase has of Nazi-style extermination of a people. He said that the occupation regime over Jerusalem must be erased from the page of time.

Again, Ariel Sharon erased the occupation regime over Gaza from the page of time.

    Comment by JT

Sorry loon tool JT. The President of Iran DID NOT say he wanted to wipe Israel off the map. Here is the real translation of what he said:

According to Juan Cole, a University of Michigan Professor of Modern Middle East and South Asian History, Ahmadinejad’s statement should be translated as:

The Imam said that this regime occupying Jerusalem (een rezhim-e eshghalgar-e qods) must [vanish from] the page of time (bayad az safheh-ye ruzgar mahv shavad).[13]

Norouzi’s translation is identical.[12] According to Cole, “Ahmadinejad did not say he was going to ‘wipe Israel off the map’ because no such idiom exists in Persian”. Instead, “He did say he hoped its regime, i.e., a Jewish-Zionist state occupying Jerusalem, would collapse.”[14]

The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) translates the phrase similarly.[15] On June 15, 2006 The Guardian columnist and foreign correspondent Jonathan Steele published an article based on this reasoning.[16]

They are planning to use ski-doos and pull lots of rubber inflatable mats behind them, for a more massive invasion.

  88. Leftside Annie Says:

Holy shit, Darryll…you really are retarded. :o/

  89. Uncle Ho Says:

Wayne, BARTLEBEE; It’s quite obvious that Daryll is an idiot.

  90. Clumberfeet Says:

“We’re saying that we cannot make a direct connection to the boats there,” said the spokesperson.
Translation; It could have been a far to thinly veiled covert operation by the CIA and/or Mossad to provoke a confrontation with Iran.

  91. katy Says:

it’s even MORE obvious that Daryll is a Parodyll…

    … i swear…

  92. Uncle Ho Says:

katy; I probably shouldn’t ask, but I’ll bite. WTF is a Parodyll?

  93. Phlogiston Says:

The Iranians were obviously practicing for an attack, and anyone who opposes immediate military action against Iran is a traitor who should either leave the country, or be locked up until the war on terror is over.
It’s also obvious we’ll have to postpone the 2008 election indefinitely; can’t change leaders in the middle of a war (on terror).

    Or maybe not…

  94. Arn Gunnutes Says:

At least show that you care about America a little bit.

    Comment by Daryll — January 10, 2008 @ 3:34 pm

    We DO care about America.

Unlike MURDERER Bush the COXUCKER punk TRAITOR to the USA.

And TREASONOUS Nazi DoD PSYOPS like YOU.

    Sincerely,

    NRA Gun Nutes

  95. ucsbclassics53 Says:

Daryll! You are so right! Iran has the BIGGEST nuclear arsenal in the world, PLUS they control all of the oil. If we do not attack, they will destroy us with drones that can get to New York not in 45 minutes, but 45 seconds, no 45 nanoseconds! What are we to do?

  96. JT Says:

hanshiro said that Iran’s president’s declaration that he wanted to wipe Israel off the map was a “poetic” translation.

You have got to be kidding me?!?!? How far will you nuts go to justify fascism? Wow. Unbelievable. I shake my head in utter sadness at how deluded you are in justifying this behavior…

  97. JT Says:

Oh, and the President of Iran really DID say that he wanted to wipe Israel off the map. Go explain that one TP as you snuggle with this fascist regime.
    Comment by JT — January 10, 2008 @ 3:19 pm

For the record, we don’t live in Israel. And the “fascist regime” is led by Bush/Cheney only you’re too dumb to see it.

    Comment by Shayne — January 10, 2008 @ 3:32 pm

Yeah, we live in a fascist regime. You post on a blog that is highly critical of politics and your posts will never garner repercussions from the government. How do you reconcile your freedom of speech with living in a fascist regime? Given to hyperbole, are we?… Grow up.

  98. hanshiro Says:

hanshiro said that Iran’s president’s declaration that he wanted to wipe Israel off the map was a “poetic” translation.

    Comment by JT — January 10, 2008 @ 5:41 pm

No, I did not, JT. The fact is, you were spectacularly wrong. Iran’s president never made such a declaration about “wiping Israel off the map.” Dolt. Your claim is as bogus as every other republican chickenhawk, intentionally perpetuating urban myths to justify horrific suffering and worldwide imperialism. It is indeed fitting that you chose a TP column about lying the US into war to push more lies trying to goad the US into war.

    Coward.

  99. hellinabucket Says:

Highly critical of politics? No JT, not all politics just the bastardized version that GW has tried to force feed us.

I won’t call GW’s administration a fascist regime but you ignored evidence that proves the Iranian president didn’t say what you think he said and you attack someone else’s anger with this president.

You like shell games don’t you.

  100. JT Says:

So, Hanshiro cannot factually support his claim, and uses a novel defense of “poetic” translation to justify a former embassy-siege crook/mass-murderer’s words. Then, he resorts to that time-honored tactic used by kindergarten-aged children everywhere: name-calling. Ha, ha! Thanks for the afternoon humor.

  101. Leftside Annie Says:

Poor JT. It must be so very difficult for you to ride the short bus every day.

  102. wisedup Says:

(somebody else here coined that term - i forgot to write it down)

    Someone Parodying Daryll?
    Comment by BARTLEBEE — January 10, 2008 @ 5:12 pm

    or that, too…

  106. hanshiro Says:

How do you reconcile your freedom of speech with living in a fascist regime? Given to hyperbole, are we?… Grow up.

    Comment by JT — January 10, 2008 @ 5:44 pm

Because when free speech does impact president Shortbus or his ilk directly, he does remove civil liberties, like forcing people to sign loyalty oaths for “rallies” paid for by taxpayers, and detaining protesters and fencing them into “protest zones” to keep them out of view. Then there’re churches who spoke out against the war suddenly finding themselves the targets of IRS investigations, or Homeland security abusing their position.

Lest we forget Rev. Lennox Yearwood getting tackled and having his leg broken for wanting to listen to Petreaus’ testimony while wearing a button that said, “I love the people of Iraq.”

JT, claiming the horsesh*t that you do doesn’t make it true…and your bumpkin histrionics doesn’t make you sound more credible, just more desperate to blame non-republicans for something; even if you have to invent the scenario out of thin air in which to hang Limbaugh and Hannity mythology.

Or, mis-represent plain english to suit your fantasies.

No JT…Several people, including me, have already posted links to glowingly demonstrate your superior ignorance. Pretending the proof isn’t there is no more effective then closing your eyes so others can’t find you in the dark.

  113. Ditch Mitch KY Says:

Today 1/10/08 was a red-letter day for the Bush Administration:

    1. The US Navy was forced to admit that the report about Iranian ships confronting the US at the Strait of Hormuz was inaccurate. In other words, it was total bullshit and may well have pushed Sen. John McWar to victory in NH. WHO will be held responsible for this bogus report? Bush? Cheney? Rice? Hadley? Gates?

    No one.

    2. The US dropped 40,000 lbs. of bombs on a Baghdad neighborhood, in a ten-minute barrage. Wait — the Bush Neo-Con Team says the “Surge” is a marvelous success. Sure. Things are going so well that we must bomb the hell out of innocent civilians in Baghdad? Mitch McConnell, McCain, and all GOP candidates support the “Surge.” Who will call for an investigation into this excessive use of force on a civilian population (40,000 lbs. of bombs)?

    No one.

    Heckuva Job, Bushie.
    Who will be held responsible?

A few years before. In 1947, former Nazis were spirited over here through Operation Paperclip, and one “Great Achievement” was placing them in high positions in the newly formed CIA.

Remember this…..JFK di not want to escalate Vietnam, but the Military Industrial Complex did. 9 months after his assassination, we are in a 10 year shooting war with North Vietnam. The Military Industrial Complex are the biggest F..ups perhaps in the history of the planet.

Here are the Knotheads at Freerepublic on the fabrication by the US with Iranian boats. The usual crap.

I say it’s the opening scene from “Miami Vice” spliced with some dialogue of Boris and Natatia of “Rocky the flying squirrel” thrown in for good measure.

  118. bernarda Says:

First of all, Bush can’t remember the difference between territorial and international waters.

Second, how many warships does Iran have off the coast of the U.S.?

Third, Bush and company are lying warmongering war criminals.

  119. williamf Says:

This is not the government men and women should be asked to die for. The government is riddled with clowns and fakers, liars, and restroom pickup scum. The story is classic Gulf of Tonkin stuff which occurred when LBJ was the President. His resume’ was not pretty either. Yet, we keep putting these people in office and it’s because money runs the entire machine. The money goes to the best possibility for making profits go higher and laws go away. Until this changes we are going to have little children in the oval office instead of grown ups…and children will play. Problematic of course is the fact that while playing they get people, our people, killed and maimed. Then they dummy it all up with some bullshit story to make it all better. This latest from the Pentagon has Cheney’s signature all over it but hey, I could be wrong. Either way it makes our military establishment look like a bunch of idiots and takes our country down another notch in the eyes of the world. Aren’t false reports or collusion to make a false government reports crimes? I’m just askin’ is all.

  120. coonbug Says:

Ron Paul at the Republican Debate last night was RIGHT. The rest of the candidates on the stage just ACCEPTED without investigating, that it was IRAN that threatened us.

  123. Matt Royal Says:

The tenor of this conversation amazes me. Why do all of you want to assume that we are the bad guys in this?

Why are your minds so closed to the possibility that we could be doing the right thing?

Why do you possess such a sense of guilt for perceived wrongs? Why not assume that you/we are not guilty of being evil?

Open your minds people! Open your minds…

  124. michaefl Says:

Are there hints of the explosion of the Maine in Havana harbor or the questionable Gulf of Tonkin attack?
