In cases such as allegedly occured, does the navy routinely verify that the radio signal is coming from the appropriate direction ? That is, if they get a signal saying “I’m at 235 degreess from you” would they act on it at that time or would they first require RDF to show the signal was coming from 235 ?

Perhaps they don’t have a conscience. Your question about how they’d feel about starting WWIII reminded me of Gen. Paul Tibbets, the pilot of the Enola Gay, and his feelings of no regrets for killing tens of thousands of innocent people. I looked up and read an interview with him from 2002. The subject of 9/11 and terrorists came up, and he said they all should be killed and that we needed to just forget about taking them to court. Funny that one of the individuals who fought for our freedoms, including our judicial system, would so quickly set aside the idea of innocent until proven guilty. From the interview it appears he would have no problem dropping nukes on locations where terrorists are located, and to hell with civilian casualties. It’s his claim that it’s just tough luck that innocent people were in the way.

CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait, Jan. 12 — President Bush explored the possibility of further troop reductions in Iraq with his top commander on Saturday, but he announced no decisions while forecasting that the U.S. military presence there would outlast his presidency. [duh]

Bush offered an upbeat assessment of where Iraq stands a year after he sent reinforcements to stem spiraling violence, and he said the U.S. military is “on track” to achieve its plan of reducing troop strength there from 20 to 15 combat brigades by the middle of the summer. That would make for roughly 130,000 troops in all, about the same as when Bush announced the “surge” last January.

While Iran and Syria may not be the most helpful places, the US position in Iraq is hardly the result of only Iran and Syria.
