Matthews: ‘messed around’ quote was ‘unexceptional.’

Earlier this week, MSNBC’s Chris Matthews sparked controversy when he claimed that “the reason” Hillary Clinton is “a U.S. Senator, the reason she’s a candidate for President, the reason she may be a front-runner, is her husband messed around.” Defending the comment to the Associated Press yesterday, Matthews said he “thought it was an unexceptional statement” because he says he was only referring the circumstances when she was “asked to run for the Senate from New York.” Matthews original statement, however, didn’t refer to how she was drafted to run. Instead, he claimed “she didn’t win it on the merits.”

Yes, as Matthews goes, this comment wasn’t exceptional. It was typical.

Typically vapid, catty, pathetic, sophomoric, and unprofessional.

looks like Hillary hit potato-head Timmy right back, and kept on punching. He just looked like another Goebbels wannabe.

Well said, Peter. Matthews threw a fastball down the heart of the plate, sure, but you smacked it into the center-field bleachers.

America’s corporate media really hates Liberals. It’s no wonder why Americans were brainwashed into supporting Bush’s and Cheney’s evil agenda. I think everyone who opposes Neoconservatives and the Corporate media should unplug their TV sets. The last time I watched TV was 6 years ago.

Boycott everything related to the Corporate media.

  8. Zooey says:

    Just. Stop. Talking. Tweety.

    Jeebus…

  9. dalloway says:

Imagine if Tweety had made the equivalent comment about Obama: he’s a Senator because of affirmative action or white guilt or some such nonsense. He’d have been off the air the next day.

  10. Jack Jett says:

Unexceptional is a word that describes Matthews and Carlson….others would include, bigoted, homophobic, idiotic,
sexist, dumb ass, Bush licker, self loathing, and egotistical.

    Pigs, basically

  11. ArtZ says:

What if Matthews had made a similar comment about John Edwards: He is only getting support only because his wife has cancer. What a tool.

  12. eve says:

Matthews, you dweeb, of course you don’t see the significance of your sexist remark because you have made it clear that your sexist OPINIONS are not opinions at all. You think if you say it then it must be a fact. And in your opinion, women don’t count.

  13. dixie blood says:

Early this morning a sent an email to letters@msnbc.com. You can so the same. Here’s what I wrote:

    MSNBC,

Why is Chris Matthews on the air? Why does MSNBC allow him to spew sexist nonsense?

Tom Brokaw is a real journalist. Chris Matthews just makes stuff up. Is that the standard MSNBC embraces? Lying?

Chris Matthews is rude. He interrupts his guests in mid-answer.

Chris Matthews is PRO Republican. His fawning over Mitt Romney and continuous attacks against Hillary Clinton makes this clear and undeniable. Does MSNBC believe it’s a very good thing to have a clearly biased, rude and poorly informed “journalist” on the air each day dragging MSNBC’s credibility into the abyss?

I think MSNBC should play “Hardball” with Chris Matthews and kick him to the curb. Let him work at Fox where they love biased reporters.

MSNBC does not have to copy CNN or Fox to get ratings. Look at “Countdown.” This is what the American people want. They are tired of being told what is important. They already know what’s important. They want sober intelligent discourse. They want smart people on the air. Not loud-mouthed himbos like Chris Matthews.

MSNBC can do better and deserves better, but more importantly the American people and our great Democracy deserve much better.

Do the right thing and fire Chris Matthews.

  14. pbg says:

    One question, Chris:
If the Monica scandal hadn’t happened, and Bill left office trailing clouds of glory, would Hillary have not run for the Senate seat in NY? And if his popularity was even higher than it was, would she not have won?

Your assertion is simply absurd, and it’s a measure of the deterioration of our discourse that nobody has asked you these questions.

O’Hanlon Mourns That Obama Was Right On Iraq
Brookings fellow Michael O’Hanlon continues his abysmal record of staking out the wrong positions on Iraq in an article in this morning’s Wall Street Journal, criticizing presidential candidate and Illinois Senator Barack Obama’s position on the war.

a chance to REPEAT that information about OBAMA, but
it was posted by kutalis, who endorses obama… so, OK… kinda…

Edwards Finally Gets On Board Strategic Reset Plan; Will Others Follow?
The New York Times reports today that former Senator and current Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards is calling for a 10-month troop withdrawal from Iraq, including those troops currently training Iraqi security forces. This raises two questions:
    1. What took Edwards so long? [...]

that doesn’t sound pissy to you?
ben and shane put it well, early on:
Rather than question why it took Edwards so long, be glad that he did. Comment by Ben Dover
At least Edwards isn’t too hard headed to rethink his options. Apparently Mrs. Clinton is. Comment by Shayne

i just wish ThinkPROGRESS would be completely transparent and
get completely behind ANY and ALL democratic candidates by
highlighting and touting ALL the ideas from each candidate for the
purpose of educating and promoting PROGRESSIVE ideals…
the better to know how to vote…

and may the best person win…

and, at this time, i happen to think that EDWARDS is the
best candidate to be the president that this country needs
to heal and move forward with…

i do truly like hillary clinton for many reasons… but i don’t want her
to be the president because i don’t want to hear ANY more b!tch!n’ and moanin’ from the rabidrightwingnutjobwackos that will enevitably, further, tear apart the citizenry that needs to work together…

    sorry, hil… it’s really just that simple…

    EDWARDS / OBAMA …

    Dixie,

NBC is owned by General Electric, one of the largest manufacturers of weapons of mass destruction on Earth. Chris Matthews is doing exactly what General Electric wants him to do. Matthews is paid to praise people who support war and to demonize anyone who opposes them.

NBC is just a part of America’s corporate media.

Explain “Countdown” using that same crap argument!!

They do have a choice and so do you!!! And they are making choices!! Stand up and speak up!!! Don’t be a giveup and giveaway Demorat!!!

GE is not monolithic if you stop it!!!!

  20. Jason M. Hendler says:

    katy,

Thanks for the heads-up on the MTP interview of Hill’reh. She must just love all the cover-her-ass votes and statements that she made over the years regarding the war, because she employed all of them in that interview.

    - she denies that she understood her vote was a vote for war
    - she claims she had amendments that failed to stop / constrain the war
    - she claims that the Bush administration misled her

I just don’t see how anyone votes for someone who disavows their own actions like that, in a time of war.

  21. Jackie says:

Good news Hillary Clinton met with Martin Luther King in 1962 as noted in her bio, now there’s nothing noted of Senator Obama’s involvement of the Civil Rights issues at any time. Bill Clinton’s comment about Obama was correct and not racist. Now Tweety is a sick man and he’s trying hard to earn the GOP money for destroying Dems. He got his job on NBC for his over the top attacks on then President Bill Clinton. Chris seems like a pervert and it’s getting real scary. He is fixated on Fred Thompson’s smell, Rudy’s cross dressing and Bill, yet he attacks strong woman like Hillary and Mrs. Edwards. Now Chris’s wife is an executive career woman, now we know things aren’t going that well in his marriage.

  22. JoshDest says:

Bert Convy, qualify your ridiculous statements….

    “mysterious JFK plane crash…” “rapes”

Geez, hundreds of millions of dollars and all the power of the republican party, and you get a blue dress?

A perjury charge, and that’s all you got.

Leave the conspiracy crap for the crackpot sites, ok?

    Thank you.

(Oh yea…regardless, Hillary was elected two times by New Yorkers.)

  23. judyinnm says:

Since he obviously didn’t vote for Hillary, I wonder how he even conjectures why others did. But, his comment is tyical, for him.

Really – wouldn’t it be fun to watch Chris Matthews & Jon Stewart co-host a Democratic debate post mortum? They could put it on Pay-per-view, and I’d certainly pay extra.
