Right Wing Propagates New Smear Against Obama, Says He Is Muslim ‘Apostate’ Who Will Be ‘Executed’»

Last month, neocon Daniel Pipes published an essay titled “Was Barack Obama a Muslim.” Pipes, an adviser to Rudy Giuliani, posited that there is “a real possibility” that “some Islamists would renounce” Obama as an apostate “and would try to execute him” because of his limited contact with Islam as a child. Politico’s Ben Smith referred to it as “the Muslim smear, version 2.0.”

At a recent Washington Institute forum, U.S. News and World Report columnist Michael Barone quoted Pipes’ specious argument, calling it “a chilling thought,” but concluding that it’s “naive” to “expect the hearts of Muslims around the world are going to be warmed” by the prospect of an Obama presidency.

Council on Foreign Relations Senior Fellow Peter Beinart rebutted Barone and Pipes’ argument, calling it “absurd” and “reprehensible”:

First of all, we should take it as a given that al Qaeda would presumably be very happy to assassinate any American president elected in 2009 and as for the idea that this is somehow a widespread view amongst Muslims as a whole, I don’t know where someone would have gotten that impression.

Watch it:

Beinart is on point when he calls Barone and Pipes’ thinking “absurd.” As Politico’s Smith notes, Pipes’ hypothesis is based on “quibbling with inconsistencies in aides’ accounts of exactly how little contact with Islam Obama had as a child in Indonesia” that “range from very little to none.”

As Beinart notes, “al Qaeda would presumably be very happy to assassinate any American president elected in 2009,” so by pushing the “apostate” line, Pipes and Barone are doing nothing but “branding Obama a Muslim, by a subtler means.”

Digg It!

Lest we forget Obama is related to Dick Cheney

Lynne Cheney told MSNBC yesterday that her husband and Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama are eighth cousins. A month ago, the Chicago Sun-Times said the two very different politicians are “ninth cousins once removed.” The Sun-Times based that conclusion on this connection:
Obama is related to Cheney through Mareen Duvall, a 17th century immigrant from France. Mareen and Susannah Duvall were Obama’s great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandparents and Cheney’s great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandparents.

They tried their “initial run” in New Hampshire to steal Obama’s votes and send them to Hillary because she will be the easiest one to discredit via swiftboating. Essentially, the GOP knows that if Hillary is the candidate, they will win the election after her skeletons are paraded out of the closet.

Republicans used to be the champions of civil rights. Eisenhower sponsored the Civil Rights legislation of 1957 and 1960. The important Civil Rights Act of 1964 actually had more Republicans voting for it than Democrats. The problem was that Goldwater didn’t vote for the 1964 Civil Rights Act and, as a result, became the first Republican to win in the South since Reconstruction. He won several Southern States in the 1964 Presidential election. He didn’t win any other states except for Arizona. Since 1964, the racist Democrats in the South began switching to the GOP and the Southern Strategy began, which was perfected under Ronald Reagan.

    Comment by Keltoi — January 14, 2008 @ 2:28 pm

I was thinking about a response, Keltoi, that specifically addressed the issue. It is true that “all Republicans are racists” is ridiculous. What I have been having trouble with is the general sense of the comment, that the Republian party is the party of “homophobia, misogyny and ignorance”, as well as racism. The problem is that much of that hyperbole is true; the Republican Party has indeed stained itself repeatedly on all these issues.

Individual Republicans are certainly not racist, homophobic, no-nothing tools. But the Republican party too often has placed itself on that side of issues and has relied on racist, homphobic no-nothing tools for votes.

Bush’s SoS were appointees, Keltoi. They were not elected by Republicans. I suspect that either of them could have gotten elected to some position by Republicans, and always thought Powell would have been an excellent Presidential candidate before he permanently stained his own credibility. But the fact also remains that there are no Black Republicans in Congress, and haven’t been any for a long time. The only Black Republican Senator in the 20th Century left in 1979. There were 3 or 4 Congressmen in that same period, the rest were all from the 19th Century.

And Daddy Bush nominated Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court. Just because some appointees have been African American doesn’t mean they support the cause. I would say Powell is more liberal than the other two and still has redeemable qualities. Powell would have been forced out by Bush if he hadn’t resigned. Condi is basically and first of all a long-time crony who rubberstamps whatever her Chimp does; whatever race she happens to be is secondary. Clarence Thomas doesn’t support civil rights issues. I suppose it’s a good thing for the Obama supporters that the righties are looking this desperate — it shows that Obama has become a major contender.

What’s sad is that playing race and religion cards still works in this country. Maybe someday there won’t be enough Americans who care about the race and/or religion of a candidate for this strategy to gain any traction. I can always hope.

Of course both parties use race to whatever advantage they can. That’s politics. But HOW they use it is very telling. You keep insisting (or at least insinuating) that Democrats are just as racist as Republicans, and then you support it by saying that “both parties use race to whatever advantage they can”. Those two statements are not the same.

It’s pretty clearly established that Republicans have thrived in the South and rural America for a generation by exploiting racial fears among the white majority.

  101. ralph the wonder llama Says:

Keltoi, I agree with you that it’s a silly and indefensible position to hold that “all conservatives are racist”.

And you have a good point that there are many black leaders who are racist, too.

But whatever trace elements of racism that exist in liberal support for minorities and the poor (who tend to be minorities in greater percentages) is far outweighed by conservative support for policies that perpetuate the racial and income divide, which favors the largely white establishment.

Add to that, the legacy and continuing implementation of Nixon’s Southern Strategy, and you really don’t have a strong case to make.

Being a racist makes you a racist, and I am not one.

    Comment by Keltoi

It’s been my experience that people who are truly not racist, seldom, if ever, feel compelled to make that statment.

  103. Impolitics Says:

Humans are xenophobic. It’s our nature and no group is free of it. However, modern Republicans seem to be particularly prone to running campaigns, and setting policy, based on fear of “different” people. Blacks, Scientists, Muslims, “illegal immigrants”, gays, “Arabs”, atheists and everyone who is distinguished from their narrow group are fair game. It’s especially educational when they turn on one of their own, usually, for being “too librul” about some inconsequential point of dogma or a sex scandal.

Indeed, they are a group which takes xenophobia to a new, and extreme, level in American cultural history. Though they are far from unique I can’t think of a previous movement in American history which combined the power and narrowness of the neocons who control today’s Republican Party. They are just new members of a very old group which follows a simple code:
“Kill what you hate. Hate what you fear. Fear what you do not understand.”

While much of this xenophobia is manifested as racism, it’s not always the case. However, virtually every failed decision of the Bush administration can be seen as fear based. People who are dumb with fright keep getting other stupid, frightened, xenophobic, people (including well-meaning voters) to pursue disastrous policies like offensive military action against foreign criminals resulting in the indefinite occupation of a hostile nation X2.

Their greed makes them “want it all” while their fear insures they will never “get it all” and the same can be said for all the frightened fools who think Bushco has made them safer. They have let their fear justify offensive war against, and internal persecution of, “Them”. And there are more of “Them” every day.

The sad fact is that Obama falls into the “them” category for plenty of people, regardless of ideology. Lots of people who consider themselves fairly liberal would probably vote against him based on race even if they preferred him in other respects. And, one would assume, he is probably a higher risk target than most candidates. Oddly, his esteemed opponent, Mrs. Clinton may be one of the few people who may be more hated. The fact that neither is a white man probably puts them at an elevated risk and that isn’t likely to change in the foreseeable future of Western Civilization. I wonder how much of the huge amount of money they collect is spent on additional private security?

And your attempt at equivalency fails again, since the white majority is

    a) more powerful socially than the black minority and
    b) more useful as a constituency in elections, since it is, y’know, a majority.

How many calls were there for all muslims to speak out against bin laden?

And, you and yours have profited from the racist acts of your leadership. There is quite a discussion going on right now among the dems about the race issue between Hillary and Obama. Now, it’s hardly a surprise that you would erect such a straw man (in fact it
s what we expect out of you), but in fact the claim oft repeated on TP about the South and party affiliation is that those RACIST VOTERS from the RURAL SOUTH who had supported the Democratic Party from Reconstruction to the 1960s, left and became REPUBLICANS after the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was signed by a Democratic president. This resulted in a sea change in presidential politics that was encouraged by Nixon’s SOUTHERN STRATEGY.

More long term, several commentators have suggested that the ultimate result of this strategy is to turn the Republican party into a regional party rather than a viable national one. Enjoy your future, Gigi.

  135. Robt Says:

If I might be so bold to suggest that the Republicans are using the “Muslin” word as code instead of “Black Afro/American”.

Never once did I hear or read any news story of Obama’s “muslim” connection running for Senate or as State legislator. H
    as anyone else?

Again, it is my contention on how the GOP refers to Obama, connecting him to Muslim is racial code for “Negro”!

Where was the concern of the “Fascist Bush” doing business with or enemy the Germans?

Fred Thompson defending terrrorists in the Pan Am tradgety?

Romney the Mormon? Is Mormon a cult?

There should be a voters grassroots campaign to spank these people and publically. It needs to be curbbed NOW !!

  136. 99Luf Balloons Says:

    Keltoi,
Get over it. The Republican party stands for keeping people down on the farm, that is why they are CONSERVATIVE. They want to keep everything for themselves. That is ANTITHETICAL to any socially progressive or forward thinking movement that espouses the cause of liberation from poverty or helping fellow people. And lo and behold, blacks have been driven into or held in the latter group by…The capitalists and other land barons (read slave owners) Dixiecrats who are now prominent within the GOP.
Face it, the GOP is dead. It is a cripled, and empty vessle, with nothing but contempt and hatred of what AMERICA is turning into, and pines for the days of old, where everyone was kept “down on the farm.”
Just look at the idjits you got out front and center. Racists the bunch of ya. And until the supporters either bury the elephant, or remake it into something else, your ideals are dead, your points are dead, and your planks are all dead.
The writing is on the wall, try reading it.

    #152-
“151. Robt. It is the Clinton camp that has been repeatedly floating the “Muslim” word about Obama. You need to get your facts straight. ”

-You could be right of the Clinton camp responsible for some.
Yet what of these bigoted clowns in this posts video clip. That isn’t the Clinton camp is it?

When hard core repubs at work come out and talk poorly of Obama all of a sudden because now they can replace the word “Negro” with “Muslim” is pathetic. They don’t listen to the Clinton camp because they hate her more.

I just think that anyone using the word Muslim (with the implication all Muslims are black and bad) should be spanked publicly.

At least some coverage that they use the term Muslim as a replacement derrogatant for Negro.

And that includes Clinton’s camp being spank if required.

  138. BillyBob Says:

Osama….I mean Obama is a muslim, commie, coke head.
