At an event this morning in Michigan, John McCain joked that going on Jon Stewart’s Daily Show is “dangerous experience”:
I also want to assure you that from my encounters with young Americans in the military and Google and colleges, universities, high schools, even — I even went on MTV Town Hall — interesting experience. Going on Jon Stewart: That’s a dangerous experience. Letterman, Leno — I try to reach out to young people. And every time I’m around a group of young Americans, I am enthusiastic and my faith is restored.
In reality, McCain’s appearances seem more dangerous for Stewart. In April 2007, McCain went on Stewart’s show and told him that he had a present for him — an IED that he could place under his desk.
Going on Jon Stewart: That’s a dangerous experience.
If he seriously believed that, then why has he been a guest on The Daily Show ten times (which, I believe, is more than any other guest)?
January 14th, 2008 at 12:58 pmOf course it’s dangerous, its like a funny deposition.
If you are full of it, you can expect to be scorched.

I know I need that other upside down exclamation point on the other side, but it ain’t happening.
January 14th, 2008 at 12:59 pmIt’s a sad statement of our so-called watchdog media when a comedy news show asks the tougher questions of political figures than the ‘experts’….
January 14th, 2008 at 1:00 pmIn every interview that I’ve seen Jon Stewart conduct, he always seemed like the nicest guy. He wouldn’t necessarily agree with his guest, but he always treated them affably.
January 14th, 2008 at 1:03 pmMcCain thinks talking to people 50 or 60 years old is reaching out to “young people”. Young people watch MTV not Leno or Letterman. Of course to McCain 50 years is young.
January 14th, 2008 at 1:04 pmIt’s too bad, what McCain has become in pursuit of power, because he has many positive qualities that I used to admire about him, including a basic like-ability and an ability to buck convention.
I must admit, it was predicted long ago by other republicans that McCain’s shine in the eyes of the left would wear off quickly.
That he licked the behind of the GOP so thoroughly and with such relish in 2004 greatly disappointed me because he was formerly one of the Republicans that I held hope in for being fair and rational.
But that kind of thinking is just SOOoooo 2003 – 2004…

American elected Bush and elected him twice, its been Bizarro World for the last 7 years……
January 14th, 2008 at 1:15 pmAfter being grilled by Stewart , McCain jokingly told him that he had a present for him — an IED that he could place under his desk.
NEVER forget Dubya’s “joke” about not finding WMD’s in the Oval Office!
Seriously, a Wingnut’s idea of comedy is as fu(king twisted as a soup-sandwich.
January 14th, 2008 at 1:16 pmI used to like McCain. Actually I still do but I used to have more respect for him. Not that this has anything to do with the article on this thread, he sounds like he was just joking around. But he used to be one Republican I could tolerate. Then when GWB/Rove attacked him 10 different ways in 2000 I felt bad for him. And then in 2004 when he stuck his tongue up GWB’s a$$ I figured he must have had it coming. He’s getting a little old to be putting his finger on any buttons that go boom IMO.
January 14th, 2008 at 1:18 pm“… and Google…” ???
at least he didn’t say “THE google”…
January 14th, 2008 at 1:20 pmStewart isn’t always nice. He beat up on Chris Matthews a bit. And Pervez Musharraf. And McCain the last time he was on, if memory serves.
January 14th, 2008 at 1:20 pmTwo things…
First: How do you have “encounters with young Americans in the … Google? Sounds like McCain was given some words to throw around and doesn’t really understand what Google is.
Second: What’s dangerous about Jon Stewart? The fact that he nails guess better than ‘real’ journalists? Or the fact he points out the absurdity of American politics? Or the fact that at just about any point during his show, he’s the most well-read and intelligent person in the studio? What’s the matter, McCain? Afraid to have to defend yourself against yourself?
January 14th, 2008 at 1:20 pmhe WAS nice about it, wilco… imo…
January 14th, 2008 at 1:22 pmAhhh… the Chris Matthews interview.
Matthews: “Why are you trashing my book?”
Stewart: “I’m not trashing your book. I’m trashing your philosophy of life.”
DING!

No and yes.
January 14th, 2008 at 1:25 pmkaty, I’d say he was fair. He wasn’t exactly nice. Not mean, though. But he went after him.
January 14th, 2008 at 1:26 pmI’m in no way criticizing Stewart, though. I don’t think he’s ever been mean. If he’s ever tough, he’s fair.

Let’s not forget his lack of character or moral standards, either. He’s every bit a panderer as Romney, only he’s better at it.
January 14th, 2008 at 1:29 pmEmbarrasing, yes, for a dufus llike McCain.
January 14th, 2008 at 1:35 pmDangerous, try walking around Baghdad without escort or Kevlar, you weasel.
Truth is dangerous, Senator. Perhaps that’s why you seem increasingly eager to avoid it?
January 14th, 2008 at 1:42 pmConsidering McCain’s bio, I am sure he was joking about Stewart being dangerous. He is pretty famous for his sarcastic humour, though it sometimes rebounds on him when people take him seriously.
January 14th, 2008 at 1:42 pm“Going on Jon Stewart: That’s a dangerous experience. ”
Yeah right.. and walking around Iraq without a flak jacket and 100 + entourage are less dangerous than going on the Jon Stewart’s show. Thanks for that remark, McCain because that will make more people curious about the Daily Show and tempted to go on the show.

I guess I’ll finally count myself among those who have lost their minds. I’m so sick of this shit.
January 14th, 2008 at 1:54 pmStewart does “dangerous” interviews, indeed. But not with McCain. They are usually his biggest softball lovefests. Just goes to show what overall softball treatment from the press McCain is used to…
January 14th, 2008 at 2:15 pmWilco:
Jon Stewart has had one interview with McCain since the ugly McCain interview. The last one was a lovefest, as frenchfries mentions above.
But the one prior to that, yeah it was an atypical interview for Stewart. Bill Moyers even asked Stewart about it on his PBS show later that same week.
(Would love to see Bill Moyers do a segment on The Daily Show.)

January 14th, 2008 at 2:37 pmI saw McCain on John’s show once. It seemed reasonable, not dangerous.
January 14th, 2008 at 2:57 pmGoing on Jon Swewart is dangerous, if you have something against sanity, reason and truth….
January 14th, 2008 at 3:30 pmWhat mc pain means as ‘dangerious’ is he might slip and tell the public what crimes his party has commited.
January 14th, 2008 at 3:31 pmJon Stewart asks relavent questions, and also follows up. He doesn’t just “lead” people into their chosen talking points, like the Sunday talk show hosts do. And he does call “Bullshit” when it’s appropriate. THAT is dangerous.
January 14th, 2008 at 4:21 pmHey, Zooey,
W didn’t win in 2000 or 2004.
There is massive evidence of largely one-sided voter fraud in Fla and Ohio.
January 14th, 2008 at 9:45 pmI will never forget the image of him “strolling” in Baghdad in a flak jacket surrounded by heavily armed troups and with helicopters overhead, after telling us what a safe place it was.
If that’s not a Michael Dukakis tank moment for his Presidential aspirations, there is no hope!
Baghdad is safe, Jon Stewart is dangerous. This guy should be President?
January 15th, 2008 at 10:04 amLOL. McCain’s courage to appear on a SATIRE show on COMEDY CENTRAL should inspire Dems to appear on State Sponsored RTV. …
LOL. That’s rich.
