Officials in Vice President Cheney’s office saw the Iran NIE “as a death blow to their Iran policy,” reports the Wall Street Journal. The report’s authors “knew how to pull the rug out from under us,” said a “long-time aide to the vice president, referring to the way the key judgments were presented.”
“In a closed door hearing scheduled for Wednesday, Congress plans to ask why the CIA destroyed tapes showing interrogations of suspected al-Qaeda operatives. Was it a cover-up?”
75 percent: Americans who think the country is off on the wrong track, matching the highest number ever recorded in the CBS News/New York Times poll.
“Strong evidence is emerging that consumer spending, a bulwark against recession over the last year even as energy prices surged and the housing market sputtered, has begun to slow sharply at every level of the American economy, from the working class to the wealthy.”
Soon “after it returns tomorrow, the House is likely to take up contempt of Congress resolutions against White House Chief of Staff Joshua B. Bolten and former White House counsel Harriet E. Miers for their refusal to appear before Congress for questioning about the 2006 removal of nine U.S. attorneys, Democratic leadership aides said.”
The de-Baathification law passed by Iraq’s parliament on Saturday is “riddled with loopholes and caveats to the point that some Sunni and Shiite officials say it could actually exclude more former Baathists than it lets back in, particularly in the crucial security ministries.”
MSNBC uninvites Dennis Kucinich. After initially inviting Kucinich to take part in its debate in Las Vegas on Tuesday, MSNBC announced that it had changed its criteria and told Kucinich he was not allowed to attend.
“Climatic changes appear to be destabilizing vast ice sheets of western Antarctica that had previously seemed relatively protected from global warming.” The report came just days after the head of the IPCC “said the group’s next report should look at the ‘frightening’ possibility that ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica could melt rapidly at the same time.”
And finally: A survey conducted by pollster Frank Luntz exclusively for Playboy magazine found that Republicans and Democratic voters have more in common than they realize. Among its key finds, the poll reported that “a quarter of Dems and GOPers say they’d have a ‘one night stand’ with the president, in the White House.”

NBC, owned by GE, the 9th largest defense contractor makes money by KILLING people, many women and children. They need war. They love war. War is their porn.
They also need to sell you overpriced drugs that you don’t need. Therefore, NBC is a drug pusher too.
Lastly, NBC needs all those billions of dollars raised by politicans in the form of campaign commericals, which pay the bloated salaries of corporate whores Brian Williams and Chuck Todd.
Dennis Kucinich is bad for their business. He is for PEACE. He is for NON-PROFIT Healthcare. He is for Public Financed Elections. These are the criteria they’ve used to eliminate him from the debate. Everything else they say is a lie.

——————————————-
I think by now everybody believes it was a cover-up of some kind — in that there was something on the tapes that somebody didn’t want to get out. Nobody believes it was either an accident or that they were destroyed because storage space was a problem. The question is — WHAT were they covering up?
Are they covering up — as they say — interrogation methods that would cause harm to us if they fell into the wrong hands?
Are they covering up interrogation methods that could implicate high ranking people in criminal activity?
Are they covering up the identities of covert agents?
Are they covering up information given by the subjects of the interrogation?
And, of course, it’s not just what was on the tapes that’s being covered up, it’s the reasons for their destruction. This stinks to high heaven.
Oh, and I’m getting a little sick and tired of “closed door” sessions. I don’t suppose anyone is actually under oath, either?

(from Raw Story)
Romney: It’s not torture unless you admit it
CNN’s Wolf Blitzer assails GOP presidential candidate and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney over his lack of a definite opinion on whether the widely debated interrogation method known as “waterboarding” is torture.
Even as competitor and Arizona senator John McCain, along with United States Director of National Intelligence Mike McConnell, define “waterboarding” as torture, Romney remains strategically undecided.
“I just don’t think it’s productive for a president of the United States to lay out a list of what is specifically referred to as ‘torture,’” he responds.
Citing “ticking time bomb” scenarios, Romney disagrees with the notion of admitting that a particular practice could violate the Geneva Convention, thereby preventing its utilization by the United States in the event of an urgent need to extract information to, for example, prevent a nuclear attack.
Romney touts the element of surprise, which, in addition to the deliberate creation of a legal grey area on what breaches international treaty, leaves a detainee at a disadvantage when it comes to preparing for what acts one can expect an agent acting on behalf of the United States to perform once one is captured.
Says Romney, “We have found it wise in the past not to describe precisely the techniques of interrogation that are used here in this country–also, so that people who are captured don’t know what might be used against them.”
The President, Romney concludes, is responsible for orders handed down to an interrogator, but also has the right to determine what is an appropriate interrogation technique to order an agent to perform.
So Daryll, you seem to be a fair arbiter of what is moral, so I’ll ask you: would crushing a child’s testicles be fair game if it would force a parent who’s suspected of terrorism to talk?

We must protect our nation at all cost. Haven’t you listened to the words of Rudy Guliani?

January 14th, 2008 at 10:23 amDaryll:
Why didn’t Jesus cast the first stone at the prostitute, then? Why didn’t he burn her alive?
Jesus is going to punish you for bending his message to suit your own needs, Daryll.
January 14th, 2008 at 10:24 amWhen I ask you for a quote, you offer up something from Genesis? What happened to Jesus?
Something specific, Daryll. Not some forestry report.
Comment by gummitch — January 14, 2008 @ 10:09 am
Gummitch, don’t expect Daryll to come up with words from Jesus to justify his “common sense” approach to life, or blaming others for their “stupidity”. Those who actually READ the gospels know that isn’t what Jesus was about.
Here’s one of the things from the gospels that Daryll isn’t telling you about. This parable about the Good Samaritan is familiar to most of us, and appears in the Gospel of Luke, chapter 10 verses 25-37.
—————————————————–
“On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. ‘Teacher,’ he asked, ‘what must I do to inherit eternal life?’ ‘What is written in the Law?’ he replied. ‘How do you read it?’ He answered: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ ‘You have answered correctly,’ Jesus replied. ‘Do this and you will live.’ But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, ‘And who is my neighbor?’
“In reply Jesus said: ‘A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, took him to an inn and took care of him. The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’
“Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”
“The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”
New International Version
—————————————————–
Now, if Daryll had been telling that story, he would have blamed the victim. He would have said that the man beset by robbers should have used his “common sense” and taken a safer route to avoid getting robbed and hurt. Or he should have armed himself to the teeth to avoid losing a physical fight. Or he was stupid to have been transporting valuables.
He also would have called the Samaritan who helped him a “bleeding heart liberal” who helped out a stupid person who should have watched out for himself.
January 14th, 2008 at 10:25 amAlways with that crazy Leviticus nonsense! Daryll in the interest of your committment to your faith and interest in doing your God’s work, I strongly suggest you take action against those Panamanian shrimp farms. I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus

him myself, or should I ask the police to do it?
And Leviticus 25:44 states that I may possess slaves, both male and
female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A
friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians.
Can you clarify? Why can’t I own Canadians?
Lastly , I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in

Actually, whether or not you realize it, Daryll, what you are trying to do is convince open-minded, 21st century people that words written thousands of years ago (you like to quote the Old Testament a lot) about how humans should behave, based on an ignorant understanding of the world and its inhabitants (they didn’t know that there were people living on this continent back then) should form the moral framework of how we live today. They didn’t know what they were talking about back then, and they know even less today.
Listen, I truly believe in the Good Samaritan, but I refuse to help people who continuously make mistakes.
Comment by Daryll — January 14, 2008 @ 10:28 am
Tell us, Daryll, how you know that the man lying on the side of the road has been making the same mistake over and over unless you first go offer to help him? You sound like you want to assume that every poor person, every person who finds himself in distress, is guilty of the repeatedly using bad judgment, and you appear to want to “pre-judge” all of them so that you don’t have to help. The Good Samaritan didn’t ask questions, he just helped someone in need. Shouldn’t you be doing that?
Jesus does not reward constant foolishness.
Comment by Daryll — January 14, 2008 @ 10:33 am
Then the logical conclusion would be that Jesus will not be rewarding President Bush or Vice President Cheney, will He?
It also appears that you also proceed from the false assumption that to have morals, one must believe God. This is probably one of the most incorrect of your beliefs. But don’t worry about me going to Hell. I won’t, because it doesn’t exist.
I hope the weather is nice in whatever reality you currently reside. Vaya con dios.

January 14th, 2008 at 1:21 pm“In a closed door hearing scheduled for Wednesday, Congress plans to ask why the CIA destroyed tapes showing interrogations of suspected al-Qaeda operatives. Was it a cover-up?â€
You know, if I were a Congressman, I think I’d have to lead off with “Were these tapes destroyed because they showed some illegal activities being done? That’s the only rational explanation I could possibly conceive. Hasn’t it been a long-held concept of certain people in the White House and their allies in Congress that ‘if you have nothing to hide, you shouldn’t be afraid’?”

Let me guess: “Made in America, shipped with Allah’s blessing to our Wahabbi brothers in the Iraqi insurgency. Yours sincerely Saudi Prince xy or z”
P.S. “There’s another $20billion worth on the way, brothers”
January 14th, 2008 at 4:00 pm“Some 60 suspected militants were killed and 193 arrested in the first week of Operation Iron Harvest, a major sweep against Al-Qaeda jihadists in four Iraqi provinces, the US military said Monday. ”
First off, kudos to US forces.
But I thought the Army didn’t do bodycounts. Or is that so 2003?
January 14th, 2008 at 4:37 pm(the scene: Galilee, circa 30 AD. Jesus is giving the Beatitudes)
“Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
“Blessed are the meek: for they shall posses the land.”
“Blessed are they who mourn: for they shall be comforted.”
“Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after justice: for they shall have their fill.”
“Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy……..”
(then, from the back of the multitude gathered)
Darryll: “Hey, I got one: ‘Blessed are the employed, for they won’t have to mooch off their friends!’ Get a damn haircut and a job, hippie!!!”
January 14th, 2008 at 4:44 pmMy favorite daryll comment of the day:
“I am here trying to inform liberals that liberalism is biblically wrong. There are moral and ethical guidelines that must be followed.”
Comment by Daryll — January 14, 2008 @ 10:25 am
Meanwhile Jesus was one of the most liberal of historical figures.
‘Liberalism as defined by Webster’s Third New International Dictionary: “a political philosophy based on belief in progress, the essential goodness of man, and the autonomy of the individual and standing for tolerance and freedom for the individual from arbitrary authority in all spheres of life…‒
‘Jesus was the ultimate liberal progressive revolutionary of all history.’
‘He aligned Himself with the poor and the oppressed. He challenged the religious orthodoxy of His day. He advocated pacifism and loving our enemies. He liberated women and minorities from oppression. He healed on the Sabbath and forgave adulterers and prostitutes. He associated with drunks and other social outcasts. He rebuked the religious right of His day because they embraced the letter of the law instead of the Spirit. He loved sinners and called them to Himself. Jesus was the original Liberal.’
Doesn’t sound like Jesus would condone a father torching his daughter (as daryll instructs us) if she turned to prostitution! Sounds like daryll and his church quote Jesus when it suits them and the old testament with that suits them even more!

Wasn’t Jesus A Liberal?

Why assume anything they say is true? And why assume that the the dead were Al Qaeda? It says “suspected” militants. Since when are suspects murdered and the murderers praised? Besides in Giuliani’s new York, that is? What happened to Americans that the Rule Of Law has been trampled and tossed? is this the inevitable result of awarding the White House to a murderer and sociopath?
January 14th, 2008 at 8:24 pm“At least 79 weapons caches consisting of over 10,000 rounds of small arms ammunition, over 2,000 heavy machine gun rounds, over 4,000 pounds (some two tonnes) of home-made explosives and around 100 homemade bombs were discovered in the raids, it said in a statement.”

Did they state if any were traceable to the thousands of weapons (and tons of ammo) that the defense department says disappeared in Iraq?
That would be good news – of a sort.
