At a campaign stop yesterday, former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee recommended — to a cheering audience — that the Constitution be “changed” to fit “God’s standards”:
I have opponents in this race who do not want to change the Constitution. But I believe it’s a lot easier to change the Constitution than it would be to change the word of the living God. And that’s what we need to do is amend the Constitution so it’s in God’s standards rather than trying to change God’s standards so it lines up with some contemporary view of how we treat each other and how we treat the family.
Watch it:
Rawstory notes that in response, MSNBC’s “Mika Brzezinski was almost speechless, and even Joe Scarborough couldn’t immediately find much to say beyond calling it ‘interesting.’”
The American Taliban!!! This guy scares the beee-jesus right out of me.
January 15th, 2008 at 1:37 pm…and they call muslims religious and fanatics…
January 15th, 2008 at 1:38 pmI’m thinking of voting for Chuckleberry in the primaries. I want to see him representing the Republican party to the entire country. That should put the nail in the party coffin.
January 15th, 2008 at 1:39 pmFundamentalists = Fundamentalists
They’re all created equal.
January 15th, 2008 at 1:39 pmWTF ?
January 15th, 2008 at 1:39 pmI think he’s the perfect Republican candidate for President!
:-)
January 15th, 2008 at 1:39 pmIt’s a short step from ignoring the Constitution (like the current administration) to changing it (perhaps with a signing statement, President Huckabee?).
Yet another reason that Mike Huckabee is unelectable.
January 15th, 2008 at 1:40 pmHuckabee = Robertson = Falwell = Dobson = Osama = Taliban.
January 15th, 2008 at 1:40 pmWe can all agree that keeping Government (our tax $$$$) out of our personal lives is a principle foundation of our Democracy.
Talk about your RELIGIOUS FASCISM (i.e. Islamic Fascism???)…
BTW, how are we scoring on the “Do as I say, not as I do” scale? – http://usinfo.state.gov/products/pubs/principles/majority.htm
January 15th, 2008 at 1:41 pmThis guy’s becoming a very dangerous “christoextremist”. It would mean the end of this democracy is he’d ever become president. Fortunately, he doesn’t have a chance – phew!
January 15th, 2008 at 1:41 pmWould those be the Old- or the New-Testament Standards?
January 15th, 2008 at 1:42 pmThis guy is so out of touch it’s beyond words.
January 15th, 2008 at 1:42 pmHuckabee’s precisely why our founding fathers found it critical to maintain a separation between church and state – government and religion. The reichwing fanatic/zealots led by this guy is attempting to overthrow the basic premise upon which this country was founded.
It could be called “treason” if you ask me. Maybe some civil rights group needs to bring treasonous charges against Mike Huckabee??
January 15th, 2008 at 1:43 pm#12 Sick and twisted would be two words which come rapidly to mind.
January 15th, 2008 at 1:44 pmJust what we need. Another religious evangelical nutjob in the White House who wants to undo our Constitution and dictate and enforce his own religious beliefs on all American citizens of every religion and belief set no matter how much they might disagree and differ with his. Our founding fathers experienced religious persecution first-hand. They knew and understood why religion and a government that represents ALL the people cannot force religious beliefs on a democratic society of mulitiple and differing cultures, teachings, beliefs and traditions. Someone would always be left out. Someone would always be oppressed. Someone would always fight for their right to worship as they choose to. And somone would be persecuted for believing differently than their neighbors. It would be a recipe for another holy war! This guy is a snake oil saleman trying to get elected, and the religious nutjobs of our society are his dupes and enablers. Their is nothing Christian about exploiting religion for personal gain. That’s precisely what Mr. Huckabee is attempting to do, and he should be loudly and repeatedly condemned for his efforts.
January 15th, 2008 at 1:44 pmIt could be translated that Mike Huckabee’s campaign platform is “anti-constitutional” and therefore constitutes treason.
January 15th, 2008 at 1:44 pmuuuhhhhhhrrrg… (channelling Lurch Adams)
January 15th, 2008 at 1:44 pmI just threw up in my mouth a little, and that’s only in response to the headline. Now I need to work up the courage to read the rest.
January 15th, 2008 at 1:45 pmReminds me of a bumper sticker I saw- “Religious fanatics are scary in any country”. Even worse are the nut jobs that agree with this fanatic.
January 15th, 2008 at 1:46 pmwhat do “god’s standards” have to do with
“how we treat each other and how we treat the family.”?
time to put the clamps on this one…
January 15th, 2008 at 1:46 pmhe is dangerous.
Huckabee doesn’t know what the acronym NIE stands for – then he shows how little he knows about geography in public – and now this. What qualifications DOES this buffoon have for public office anyway? I’m not sure he’s graduated from the eighth grade! Obviously, he’s a brainwashed buffoon but that’s about all I can see when scrutinizing this man’s qualifications for office.
January 15th, 2008 at 1:46 pmGee, maybe the Government could fund reincarnation research, “crossing over” techniques, or the positive effects of Snake Handlers on society while they’re at it?
January 15th, 2008 at 1:46 pmDon’t look now but Huckleberry Hound’s got a dinkleberry for a brain….or is a pea smaller??
January 15th, 2008 at 1:47 pmI would vote for Huck-a-buck in the primaries in a New York minute and I urge everyone here to do the same. Tell your friends, family, anyone who will listen that God has chosen Huck-a-buck to be the next President of the USA!
We could beat that religious freak like a stepchild in a general election.
January 15th, 2008 at 1:47 pmCan some right wing ignoramus say, Christofascism?
January 15th, 2008 at 1:47 pmNanlichi: I like your logic! True….you can roll all of the Reptards into one individual and any one of the Dem candidates would win hands down against the combination of them all.
January 15th, 2008 at 1:48 pmI AGREEE….ummmmm….just one question? Which god’s standards do we use?
January 15th, 2008 at 1:48 pmthis is what the republican establishment has been waiting – the huckster to self-destruct with his religious mumbo-jumbo. Huckabee transitioning to Huckabye.
January 15th, 2008 at 1:48 pm.
When The Chimp In Chief signaled our entry into the “jihad” (he actually called it a “crusade” (sick!), it became critical for this country to begin beating the christofascist drum in order to compete.
All this is is a ridiculous religious pissing contest.
January 15th, 2008 at 1:49 pmWhen are the trolls going to weigh in here and pretend Huckleberry doesn’t represent “real” conservatives?
January 15th, 2008 at 1:49 pmHuckabee’s new moniker should be “witch doctor” with all of the mumbo jumpo he’s spewing. He’s becoming a total joke.
January 15th, 2008 at 1:50 pmGeorge Orwell/Margaret Attwood
January 15th, 2008 at 1:51 pmHow about “god standard #1″ – love thy neighbor as thyself for openers??
January 15th, 2008 at 1:51 pmI hope in one of the debates, someone asks him if he thinks we should all be forced to obey all the biblical laws, or only just the select ones he likes.
January 15th, 2008 at 1:52 pmBecause I have this great shirt that’s a poly/cotton blend and I’d hate to get it dirty and bloody by being stoned in it.
If Huckleberry Hound were to become elected, it would have to be via hacked voting machines like Herr Bush. If this were to happen again, the people would overthrow this criminal government.
January 15th, 2008 at 1:52 pm“Huckabee: ‘amend the Constitution’ to ‘God’s standards.’ ”
Man, Huckabuck frightens me. He is a cross between 21th century Rev. Jim Jones and the dude in the Waco Texas saga.
January 15th, 2008 at 1:52 pmHow absolutely unAmerican of this guy!
January 15th, 2008 at 1:52 pmman i hope he gets the nomination!
January 15th, 2008 at 1:52 pm“Yet another reason that Mike Huckabee is unelectable.

I’m afraid the US has shown that with Diebold, anyone is electable.
January 15th, 2008 at 1:52 pmThat one, we already have. The Huckster wants to make it null and void.
January 15th, 2008 at 1:53 pmWilco: Everything from incest, bestiality, and sodomy is promulgated in the old testament. I guess he’d have to do a serious “sort and cull” if he intended to use it to support anything wholesome?
January 15th, 2008 at 1:53 pmGoodbye Huck.
January 15th, 2008 at 1:53 pmHow can America consider electing someone who so clearly hates the Constitution?
January 15th, 2008 at 1:53 pmThe jagoff wants Christian Sharia law to rule the land!
I almost never download the video clips, I just read the text, but this was so outrageous I had to actually hear him say these words to believe it.
Stunning. Even the voters of South Carolina can’t be this out to lunch that they’d support anyone who said this….I hope.
January 15th, 2008 at 1:53 pmPeter C: And that includes Diebold’s Opti-Scan machines fully created for ease of hackability!
January 15th, 2008 at 1:54 pmTaliBaptists = Taliban.
-Comment by Dr. Matt
TaliBaptists … i love it… repeat often…
January 15th, 2008 at 1:54 pmCan someone who wants to change the foundation of our Constitution really be called a ‘conservative’???
We need a new term for such idiocy.
January 15th, 2008 at 1:54 pmVeritas, man I hope you are right. I have been here before though, just about four years ago. I was so thoroughly disgusted by Boy George’s first four years I didn’t think there was a chance in hell that we wouldn’t throw him out of the WH. My fellow Americans (with a little Diebold help) left me feeling like a stranger in a strange land.
January 15th, 2008 at 1:54 pmHUCKABEE, HUCKABEE
Since the MSM and the corporatists have already decided we’re going to get Hillary as our candidate even if they have to use Diebold to get her we might as well nominate the only Republican we know she can beat.
January 15th, 2008 at 1:55 pmSeparation. Of. Church. And. State.
January 15th, 2008 at 1:55 pmGovernor, please read the First effing Amendment, you anti American jerk!
ok, he’s officially off his nut and unelectable… some End Timers will vote for him, but that’s about it…
January 15th, 2008 at 1:55 pmHasn’t he broken some kind of law regarding the seperation of church and state by making such a statement? He is running for president….
January 15th, 2008 at 1:56 pmThe opti scans were the intended “panacea” due to the overt ease of hackability in the DRE’s (touch screen machines). If Diebold can make secure ATM’s for all these years, a secure voting machine should be a foregone conclusion. The fact is that Diebold INTENTIONALLY created a known vulnerability within their machinery and since it is a GOP organization, voila! The GOP controls every election! And, as we’ve come to realize, the GOP’s mantra of “any means to justify the end”, you KNOW they’re right in there hacking away…..and will be in the elections.
Hand counted paper ballot with police oversight is the only way to have a fair election in this country. If we permit ourselves to remain deluded, Diebold and the GOP will select our next white house occupants for us.
January 15th, 2008 at 1:56 pmHuckabee = Fu(kabee
January 15th, 2008 at 1:57 pmVeritas (@23),
Yes, they are awful. But NOTHING will evade honest auditing. We must insist upon it.
January 15th, 2008 at 1:57 pmFred: Yes, he has violated the law by suggesting that people disobey our constitution. It could be easily coined as “treason” by even the most strict of standards.
January 15th, 2008 at 1:57 pmThose who wish Huck to get the nomination – think again…..
You are the same people who thought Bush couldn’t get reelected…
Never doubt the stupidity and stubborness of the religious right.
January 15th, 2008 at 1:58 pmAnother radical cleric bites the dust. Looks like GOP is stuck with Insane Gramps McCain.
January 15th, 2008 at 1:58 pmI vote that we don’t use his racist and misogynist god’s standards. Perhaps Viking or Aztec deities would be useful to demonstrate the wisdom of the separation of church and state.
January 15th, 2008 at 1:59 pm“President Bush also said today that he is worried that Iraq will be overrun by religious fundamentalists. Hey, let me tell you something. If it’s good enough for the Republican Party, it is good enough for Iraq.” –Jay Leno
Can’t really say it much better.
January 15th, 2008 at 2:00 pmPeter C: And Kucinich’s demand for a recount in New Hampshire is something which MUST occur right now to stop the tampering by the GOP. Kucinich knows the history of LHS Associates (Sylvestro’s organization) who hold the chain of custody of 81% of voting machines in New Hampshire and which blackbox voting purchased and had hacked in 10 minutes…
This election is “do or die” for the GOP and it’s critical for them to control who inhabits the white house. It will either be more shoving shit under the rug like the criminal congress which preceeded this one or prison time for many politicians, including the inhabitants of the WH.
January 15th, 2008 at 2:02 pmSomebody do a “Farting Preacher” You Tube treatment on this guy.
January 15th, 2008 at 2:02 pmVeritas, he’s not advocating treason or anything of the sort. He specifically calls for amending the Constitution, to change it from a secular document, to a document for Christian law.
January 15th, 2008 at 2:02 pmThere is no lawbreaking.
He’s still a sack of you-know-what for it. And should be run out of town, as he’d insist a man who looks upon his wife during the days of her period be run out of town.
All I can say is…”WTH” = What the Huck?
January 15th, 2008 at 2:03 pmWhich God is the “Living God” he wants to change to? The Presbyterian, the Lutheran, or the Methodist believe in the Living God.
This country was built on people trying to get away from a King who was trying to change the religion to his beliefs….
Picking one is excluding others… Just read the different Bibles…
King James is different than the NIV. Different translations from different languages… Do we believe in the German translation or the Latin translation?
Do we go with the direct translation from the Hebrew? Each translation says something different…
Just like each comment here has a different translation in what old Huck says so goes the translation of a holy word… and a religious belief…
January 15th, 2008 at 2:04 pmTypical rhetoric used by all Republicans….. God, guns and gays (and more tax cuts for the wealthy).
Sigh……….
January 15th, 2008 at 2:04 pmVeritas, he’s not advocating treason or anything of the sort.

That is going to be one awkward TV moment.

January 15th, 2008 at 2:10 pmThis is what the Repug party has given us. Unbelievable. No tolerance of Repugs or their knuckle-dragging fundie supporters. What is fantastic, though, is the fact that about 70% of the population runs from this craziness. Welcome to the front row seat to watch the death of the Repugs.

You’re right, jpoke. Huckabee is the only Republican candidate so far who claims that God has chosen him to be President. Low IQ Bible thumpers live to hear shit like this.
January 15th, 2008 at 2:11 pmMakes me wonder why Huckabee would want this Constitution amended to meet God’s standard?
Could you imagine: “Thou shalt treat others as you would have them treat you!”
The Republican’s would lose their minds! Again! ;-)
Jesus was a liberal, so this would make being a conservative a sin!

Or ask him if Newt should be stoned?

January 15th, 2008 at 2:12 pmSo if the non-existent invisible magical faerie in the sky can’t say any words at all, due to not existing, does this mean that they want the constitution to be just a blank piece of paper?
Huckaberry is absolutely freaking insane, how do these sickos even get to be a candidate? Oh yeah, forgot, republicans…the theocratfascist guys.

we will have to have a de-conservatication
January 15th, 2008 at 2:14 pmI agree with others. I want us to run against Huck. Yes, he will energize the religious right wing base. So what? We want to have the rest of the Republican party to see just how fanatical and right wing they are. We want the corporatists to see just where the Republican party will be. Remember, Huck does have one saving grace, he does believe in taking it to the rich. A real problem for the corporate and wealthy branch of the party.
Just think of the campaign ads featuring the snipets of this speech. Just think of the ground to be gained by comparing this brand of Republicanism with Islam. For once, a picture showing a radical islamist next to a Republican candidate would make sense.
January 15th, 2008 at 2:16 pmI wish Huckabee had been more specific about “God’s standards” — which ones would these be?
The standards laid out in Leviticus, where rules were given regarding everything from diet to dress to conduct? That’s going to hurt the hog industry here in NC. The shrimping business down on the Gulf Coast ain’t gonna do well, either.
Or does Huckabee want to go with the standards Jesus laid out in his Sermon on the Mount — you know, the “turn your other cheek” bit? I could probably go for that — it would certainly cut down on the stupid wars we have a talent for getting into. Although big business might have some difficulty with Jesus’ position on materialism.
On a more serious note — does the Huckster realize how obvious his pandering is? His chances of getting the constitution changed in this manner are nil. He might as well say that we need to build a bridge across the Atlantic Ocean. But none of this matters when it comes to “say anything, do anything for votes.”
January 15th, 2008 at 2:17 pmwe will have to have a de-conservatication

‘Make a deposit in your bank account while you earn points toward salvation! Each deposit over $1,000 will earn a free key ring that glows when liberals are near! Protect yourself while protecting our Country from liberals!
January 15th, 2008 at 2:30 pmJesus stated that “love God” and “love your neighbor as yourself” were the foundation of “all the laws and the prophets”. So, Huck, how would a US government create secular laws to match this and how, exactly, would officials be able to judge whether or not someone was actually following the law by loving?
Biblical standards are for believing individuals, not the state. They are for God to judge, not the state.
January 15th, 2008 at 2:30 pmDaryll,
The “no religious test” clause of the United States Constitution is found in Article VI, section 3, and states that:
“…no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.”
Why would the lord allow such a thing? Get back in your church an leave the politics to the adults.
January 15th, 2008 at 2:30 pmThe seriousness of the sin of adultery can be seen in several ways. Under the law of Moses the penalty was death by stoning. (Deuteronomy 22:21 ff, John 8:4,5).

Makes perfect sense…”
January 15th, 2008 at 2:40 pmDaryll, are you mad?
Do you really want teachers to lead prayer in public school? Many of your Republican friends don’t event trust them to teach.
Exactly why should the Ten Commandments be in courthouses? Would you advocate “honoring the Sabbath” as public policy? What would be the penalty for “using the name of the Lord in vain” or not making Yahweh your Lord?
Gays who love each other don’t seem to be violating the “love your neighbor as yourself” so why should gay marriage be outlawed.
As for “being silent or moving from America” – isn’t that rather like acting as if YOU are God. Try making me do either and perhaps the “God is dead” phrase would be correct.
January 15th, 2008 at 2:40 pmWe are not making it a qualification for any political/public position. We are just going to instill biblical morals and values back into our nation. Deal with it because we are doing Jesus’ bidding.

You support capital punishment for adultery? Rape? Apostasy (turning against your faith)? Homosexuality? Piracy of any kind? These are all capital offenses in countries practicing strict sharia law.
Even if they were under mass hypnosis, it’s doubtful that Americans would allow the constitution to be changed to allow for this. If this way of life is important to you, it would be easier for you to move to a country with these values.

January 15th, 2008 at 2:54 pmFolks, you heard it here first. According to Daryll, adultery is a capital offense, meriting the death sentence. That means Rudy and Newt should be stoned.

Will the state be stoning prostitutes, or designating someone “without sin” to cast the first stone? Are we gonna be cutting off hands and feet, and plucking out our eyes?

“Are you mad because President-Elect Huckabee will instill prayer back into our schools.”
– Nope, not mad. Not even worried. In the first place, prayer never LEFT schools — as long as there are tests, there will always be prayer in schools. If you are talking about prayer led by a teacher or other authority figure, there’s a little thing called the “establishment clause” in the first amendment that will prevent that. Huckabee would have to get that amendment changed, and so far, God hasn’t made that happen.
“Are you mad because he will allow the Ten Commandments to sit in Courthouses?”
– Not worried about this one, either. Same reason.
“Are you mad because he is going to ban gay marriage…”
– Wow, you are putting a lot of power in Huckabee. Even if he DOES get elected, he won’t be king or dictator, you know. As far as “banning” gay marriage, did you know that it’s still not recognized in most of this country? Why does it worry you so? Oh, you’re afraid it MIGHT become legal in more places. Well, a constitutional amendment will make it so that no state can recognize a gay union. A majority of Americans are against a constitutional amendment for this, so good luck.
“…and abortions?”
– Ditto above. No president has been able to get Roe v. Wade overturned yet. That would be political suicide — like reinstating the draft.
“Well if you are angry, either be silent or prepare to move from America because God’s will shall prevail.”
– You are suggesting that angry Americans be silent? Wow — you really DO hate the first amendment, don’t you? As far as moving from America — I have no plans to do that. I see God’s will prevailing here in that the constitution guarantees I can worship as I choose. A luxury I wouldn’t get in some other countries.
No — Huckabee doesn’t have me worried at all. He is kind of amusing, though. Just as you keep me entertained.

We already practice capital punishment for murder in this country. It doesn’t exactly deter murder. If it did, Texas (holder of the “most executions” title) would have the lowest homicide rate in the country. They don’t.
So what other of “God’s standards” would you like to see implemented as the law of the land? How about something from Jesus?

I figure that Daryll is one of three things:
1) A brilliant parodist in the same vein as JMOHR — except that he tends to keep up the charade much longer than JMOHR does, or
2) A paid troll whose job it is to fling provocative and outrageous statements into TP threads like a slab of raw meat into a lion enclosure at the zoo, or
3) Exactly what he appears to be. And if that’s the case, I kind of pity him. He obviously can’t think for himself, and is only capable of parroting the rhetoric of others. People like this are exposed rather quickly when they can’t respond to in-depth follow-up questions — too much thinking is required.

The myth that executing a murderer instead of keeping him in prison for life is less expensive for taxpayers has been debunked many times. It’s actually cheaper to house a prisoner for life than it is to execute that prisoner, by a considerable margin. This is due to the appeals process.
Conservatives just LOVE the death penalty, but they have yet to admit it doesn’t work. It doesn’t deter crime, and it doesn’t save the taxpayers any money.

I don’t think that it’s the “one individual” that’s the problem. The potential problem is that there are a lot of people out there like Daryll who think that creating a theocracy in this country is a terrific idea, and that Huckabee is some kind of savior.
This points to the REAL problem. We need to do something about education in this country. We need to eliminate the “No Child Left Behind” Act, which has turned our schools into nothing but test-prep centers, and go back to teaching our young people how to think for themselves instead of being obedient “memorize and regurgitate” machines.

I don’t believe Daryll derailed this thread at all. He brought to life the need to combat this form of religious extremism. Angryone provided a great link showing the dark side of Huckabee. And the many others point out the ignorance of his posts. Missmolly succinctly points to the need for education and real thought as oppossed to the kneejerk reaction this wolf in christ’s clothing hopes for.
Daryll may be a parody, more power to him if he is.

Comment by Daryll — January 15, 2008 @ 2:43 pm
Jesus said that he who is WITHOUT sin cast the first stone. Who is sinless?
As for cutting off the hands and feet of thieves, that would make them permanently disabled and therefore eligible for disability/social security for life, which means WE, the working people, would be supporting them until their death. You want everyone to be taxed more, huh. Plus, if a child takes a cookie from someone do we cut off its hands and feet, too? Or is that only for the poor children and not the rich?
According to your bible, Jesus didn’t come to earth and change things by entering politics and changing laws to suit him. He lived his life changing PEOPLE in a non-judgmental, LOVING way. Not enforcement of strict laws with no freedom of choice whatsoever. You say you want to live as you think the Bible states. I believe once the laws were in place, you wouldn’t like it one bit.
January 15th, 2008 at 4:15 pmI do not think that Daryll is doing parody. Some of us who dabble in parody will come back at some point to really let loose with our own personal philosophy. The parody makes a point.
We should really be concerned about the proliferation of the right wing Christian Domionists within this country. We have seen too many schools and law schools established to aid their infiltration into our government. Too many programs aimed at helping the poor and reforming drug adicts or providing half way houses are trending towards the religious. It is just too easy for religious institutions to predicate aid or successful completion of programs (especially those under threat of sentence) upon accepting religious dogma.
We have heard too many references to the US bringing 9/11 on itself because of its morality or lack of religion. (I guess I am really disappointed in God if that is his best shot at teaching us a lesson.) We have heard too many evangelicals pray for the incorporation of their religious values as law. This is the real threat. The right wing religious domionists are really no different than the islamofascists we allegedly fight. They want the same theocratic state but merely based upon their religion.

The problem is that it’s so hard to parody this kind of stuff because it’s already so crazy. With parody you have to take it to a ridiculous level to make fun of it but this stuff is already way out there.
January 15th, 2008 at 4:21 pmThis prick needs to read some Thomas Jefferson, particularly this:
“Shake off all fears of servile prejudices, under which weak minds are servilely crouched. Fix reason firmly in her seat, and call on her tribunal for every fact, every opinion. Question with boldness even the existence of a God, because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason than that of blindfolded fear.”
January 15th, 2008 at 4:26 pmI wonder which man will be deciding “God’s standards”. Or will Huckabee just ask Pat Robertson, who apparently talks to “God” all the time (although Pat’s “God” seems to make a lot of errors)?
It’s scary the damage this guy could do to our country.
January 15th, 2008 at 4:35 pmWhat Huckabee said is no different than anyone else who has suggested constitutional amendments against gay marriage and abortion. He just stated the most common reason for people to support those amendments, while others have been less vocal about it. ;)

Apparently some libs around here think only speech with which they agree is protected. Well, that and burning flags. ;)
January 15th, 2008 at 4:49 pmWould this mean repealing the First Amendment?
Comment by Bob — January 15, 2008 @ 4:42 pm
It would actually mean creating an amendment that would amend the first amendment (I can’t believe I said that).
And because it would take a constitutional amendment to do what Huckabee’s proposing, it will never happen. I have faith in my fellow Americans. They may carry water for the president, they may be willing to drink kool-aid for the president, but I doubt seriously they will ever be so fearful and so propagandized that 2/3 of the House, 2/3 of the Senate, and 38 states would approve of such an amendment.
January 15th, 2008 at 4:49 pmBut I believe it’s a lot easier to change the Constitution than it would be to change the word of the living God.
No, Huck, that’s been accomplished long ago. One only needs to look at all the “translations” of the Bible to see that.

I would agree that 2/3 of Congress and 38 states is a huge obstacle, but after experiencing the ‘00 and ‘04 elections, I don’t have nearly the faith in the American voter as you. Also, the Republican Party Platform (at least in my state) actually supports Huckabee in general enough terms that such an amendment would have legs. Scary stuff.
January 15th, 2008 at 5:15 pmCheck the fine print.
Please consider the text of Exodus 35:2 (NIV), which reads…
“For six days, work is to be done, but the seventh day shall be your holy day, a Sabbath of rest to the LORD. Whoever does any work on it must be put to death.”
If Huckabee has ever, ever done any work of any kind on a Saturday, the Biblical directive seems very clear. So. if he were elected president, would he turn his duties over every Saturday to the vice-president, and then sentence that person to death for following his directive?
There must surely be an exemption for Baptist ministers who are running for president? Would these provisions be retroactive or will Huckleberry and Holy Joe spend their Saturdays resting and worshipping? Would Huckleberry state that the Word of God is inviolable, and insist that he be executed in respect to the guidance provided by the Bible?
If memory serves correctly, stoning was the most common means of execution in those days.

January 15th, 2008 at 7:24 pmI don’t see why advocating a change in the constitution is treason. Sure, it’s stupid, but not treasonous. All it shows is that Huckabee has no respect for the system or the Founders’ principles, but that’s not crime. It’s also not new with religious Americans. I’ve cited this quote before from the popular (at the time) Reverend Doctor Bird Wilson, an Episcopol minister in New York, circa 1831:
“The founders of our nation were nearly all Infidels, and that of the presidents who had thus far been elected [Washington; Adams; Jefferson; Madison; Monroe; Adams; Jackson] not a one had professed a belief in Christianity….
January 15th, 2008 at 7:38 pm    “Among all our presidents from Washington downward, not one was a professor of religion, at least not of more than Unitarianism.”
via C&L:
In case there was any remaining doubt, that astounding statement eviscerated Huckabee’s pretense of upholding the separation of church and state. In December, Governor Huckabee offered this charade on Meet the Press, words which obviously are no longer operative:
As it turns out, using the institutions of government to impose his faith is exactly what Mike Huckabee has in mind. Quick to denounce sharia law and “Islamofascism,†Huckabee is seems quite eager to embrace a Christian version of God’s law here at home.

Your comment indicates taking a Biblical law to an extreme in order to entrap someone. This obviously was not God’s intent. Jesus recognized that the Pharisees were trying to do the same thing to Him. They followed the letter of the law even if caused them to violate the spirit of the law. Matthew 12:1-14 and Mark 3:1-6.

January 16th, 2008 at 1:00 amRe: Comment #281 —
With regard to your response, I’m not sure how calling for John’s head on a platter complied with any Old Testament biblical laws. Perhaps you could enlighten me (and others as well).
It does seem that the members of the Religious Reich, who want justification to visit destruction upon those who believe differently, typically use Old Testament passages to justify their proposed actions. For more info, a web search under the term “dominionism” will reveal some chilling results.
So, are you saying that the New Testament invalidates the rules listed in the Old Testament, which would mean that “an eye for an eye” would be replaced with “turn the other cheek”?
There are numerous other prohibitions in the Old Testament (primarily in Leviticus and Deuteronomy) which include disrespecting one’s parents (punishable by stoning), eating certain foods, adultery (another stoning offense), etc. Are all of these null and void? Who determines which parts of the Bible are true and which one’s aren’t? And how do we know that those who make those judgements are infallible?
In terms of statements Jesus made in the New Testament, even though the Christian Reich continually rails against homosexuality, wouldn’t you think that Jesus would see fit to make at least one comment about the topic? He indicates that “it would be easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.” He refers to judgement day when those who did not feed the hungry, care for the sick, did not provide shelter for the homeless, etc. are condemned because (paraphrased), “as ye have done for the least of your brethern, ye have done unto me.”
To the extent that Jesus was a role model for the Bush administration, when did he and his disciples go around beating up, torturing and/or killing those who believed differently?
The answers to these questions should be fascinating.
January 16th, 2008 at 3:01 am#58,
Yes, it would seem that much as the Doughy Pantload has no idea as to the real definitions of either “Liberal” or “Fascism”, The Huckster runs afoul of both the Constitution and the Bible.
January 16th, 2008 at 3:56 amRe: 284,
If I remember correctly, while Jesus is credited to say “I am the way and the truth and the life,†that hardly invalidates the Old Testament. There are certainly those who find it convenient enough to dispense with God’s Covenant whenever they feel like having cheese on their Whopper, but Christ made it quite clear that this was not at all where he was coming from.
For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall he called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
—MATTHEW 5:18-19
So, either the literalists are disingenuous, and just want the comfort of being “two hour a week Jesus freaks”, or they are horrifying, atavistic creatures hell bent on bringing back stoning to your public square as a charming mix of justice and entertainment. To both, I would suggest viewing this,

I’m assuming you are a non-believer, as most here seem to be. Whether you are or not, it is impractical to try to fully explain here the difference in Biblical laws meant only for Jews, those meant for all and what was changed with the coming of Christ. If anyone truly wants to know, as opposed to just looking for something to use (misconstrue) in an argument, they can easily find that information. Jesus obviously didn’t care for attempts to use the Old Testament to entrap others. Jesus also said, “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy, but to fulfill.” We don’t throw out the Old Testament. Those looking to discredit Christians pick and choose statements, disregarding the true meaning, and then simply attack the Bible when their errors are pointed out to them. I absoultely agree that we will be held to account for our treatment of the needy. God never said, however, that we should make people dependent upon government.
January 16th, 2008 at 10:42 amAs for war, I never supported going into Iraq, so I’ll not defend Bush. I’m sure you are aware that God’s people fought many battles. God never said there is no justification for war. I doubt that God will interpret the actions of Bush the same way you do. That’s between God and Bush.
When I make reference to John the Baptist, I’ll be happy to clarify it for ya. ;)
I swear, the “Christians” here in America frighten me far more than Al Qaeda ever did.

Good point! Not all Christians want to limit free speech, just as all libs support the burning of the flag.
It’s usually the “c”hristians that want to be able to say how much they hate homosexuals, but if anyone says how much they hate the “c”hristians it’s suddenly “hate speech”. Can’t have it both ways!
I think anyone should be able to say anything they want, but should be mature enough to accept criticism when others refuse to subscribe to their opinion. If your opinions cannot withstand scrutiny and opposition, then how good are those opinions to begin with?

You got a little off track, there bud. While there are obviously Christians who hate homosexuals, most just hate the sin not the person. Advocating a ban on same sex marriage isn’t the same as hating homosexuals.
And I’m sure you know I never commented on disagreement with the substance of Huck’s words. Criticize away! The only thing I addressed was those saying his speech was treasonous or unlawful and the lack of response from those on the left who are well known for raising a ruckus at the very idea of regulating speech. Seeing the vigor with which posters oppose anything Christian in public life, we know the lack of response is not due to a lack of passion on the part of TP libs. ;)
January 16th, 2008 at 12:12 pmIn terms of statements Jesus made in the New Testament, even though the Christian Reich continually rails against homosexuality, wouldn’t you think that Jesus would see fit to make at least one comment about the topic?

I have no problem understanding why Christ didn’t comment on homosexuality. It’s not a topic for polite conversation, either then or now.
Neither does He specifically remark on fornication, a much broader word meaning any illicit sexual behavior but usually assumed to mean premarital sex. However, Christ does remark on the ideal behavior – one man one woman – when he’s questioned about divorce in Matthew 19. Here Christ states the Creator’s intent as record in Genesis.
Christ makes it clear that the proper sexual behavior is important. He also makes it clear that heart – one’s attitude – is also important. This is the action-attitude remark He makes in Matthew 5 where he says that if one looks at a woman lustfully one has already committed adultery in his heart. There’s a similar verse in this chapter saying that being angry will make one subject to the judgement. These are almost impossibly high standards, and I think, can only be understood in light of the greatest command and the second greatest command: Love God and love your neighbor as yourself.
You wisely note that the Bible has no recorded quotes from Christ on the practice of homosexuality. Neither does he remark on child abuse, rape, or any number of obvious sins.
He also doesn’t remark on offering a child to an idol, and he doesn’t remark on the propriety of a woman having sex with an animal. These two subjects, to me at least, are not really good topics for polite conversation, but they are, however, the topics before and after the men with men sex prohibition in Leviticus 18.
As far as the heart issue, Mark 7 lists an number of actions that Christ says come from a person’s heart.
Believe it’s safe to assume that “sexual immorality†would include homosexuality.
January 16th, 2008 at 1:22 pm#303 – “So how would you translate the KJV:
Mark 7:20-25
” And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man. For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:
All these evil things come from within, and defile the man. ”
Would you count the Republicans “coveting” the Majority status of the Democratic party?
Would you count the “deceit” of the Bush Administration
Would you even notice the “adultries” of then Speaker Rep. Gingrich at the exact same time that he was hounding then Pres. Clinton?
Why the double standard? Why are SOME verses of the Bible exactly as you would spin them, while you oh-so conveniently ignore the one that staes women should shut up in Church?
1 corinthians 14:34-3534-35
“Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience as also saith the law.
And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.”

Well, I do have to give you points on that argument.
It’s not like the Republicans or cons have ever complained about “freedom of speech”, they’re much more about curtailing speech with which they don’t agree rather than giving everyone a right to say their opinion. ;-)

So is it possible that we are actually in agreement that Dems and Republicans alike are guilty of hypocrisy? ;)

You are correct. Both parties are guilty of hypocrisy.
Of course, I believe that the Republican/conservative hypocrisy is much more pernicious, as they claim to be the party of “take responsibility for your actions” and then refuse to take responsibility for their actions, but that’s my bias on display! ;-)
Honestly, I think that American Dems and Reps have much more in common than they do in opposition than either side wants to readily admit.
It’s our elected officials that take things to an extreme that makes average citizens want to puke until they die. (Only slight hypoberle on that statement.)

I agree with you completely on that. When I speak of personal responsibility, I speak from the perspective of the average citizen, not as a politician seeking to prevent tax money from being spent on social programs while lining their pockets.
January 17th, 2008 at 2:43 pmHuckabee seems to want fundamentalism. It could never happen, even if Huckabilly really wanted to do it. I don’t think he does, he just wants the votes from those who do. He’s not stupid enough to want it or to try to do it as POTUS, he’s just stupid enough to say it.
Huckleberry is too conservative on religion and too liberal on criminals and the economy and immigration.
Huckabye? Huckabee wants to have adulterers, homosexuals and rape victims stoned to death. He also wants to make alcohol and music videos illegal, and make women 2nd class citizens and to take all girls out of school.
Oops, my bad, that’s another ‘religion’.
Hey, anybody but the PIAPS!
if you’re MAD
