Topping Congress’s agenda as it returns this week is a plan to “jump-start the economy and try to shorten the slowdown that many economists say has already begun to take hold.”
Today, Rep. Eric Cantor (VA), the chief deputy Republican whip in the House, unveiled his proposal to stimulate the economy. His legislation — the so-called Middle Class Job Protection Act — does nothing for the middle class. Instead, it reduces the corporate tax rate by 28 percent.
At a press conference today unveiling the stimulus proposal, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) justified the conservative plan to give tax breaks to corporations — instead of working Americans — by arguing that people actually like working long hours:
I am so proud to be from the state of Minnesota. We’re the workingest state in the country, and the reason why we are, we have more people that are working longer hours, we have people that are working two jobs.
Bachmann’s version of the American Dream is apparently working two full-time jobs and struggling to get by.
Yesterday, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office concluded that corporate tax cuts, such as the one proposed by Cantor, “may be less cost-effective in the short term” and less effective than a stimulus plan consisting of “tax rebates, extended unemployment benefits and a temporary increase in food stamps.”
Bachmann may be taking her cues from her bosom buddy President Bush, who on Feb. 4, 2005, told a divorced mother of three: “You work three jobs? … Uniquely American, isn’t it? I mean, that is fantastic that you’re doing that.”
Isn't this the crazy person that attached herself to Bush after the State of the Union address awhile back?
January 16th, 2008 at 3:43 pmMaybe the Republics would like to square this with their complaint about having to work a five-day week. I mean, if we all prefer working 80 hours a week, they must love it too, right?

January 16th, 2008 at 3:49 pm#2 - And didn't the Dems just rescind the idea of working a 5 day work week for this year? So much for actually working for $160,000 and great benefits. The people I know working two jobs are doing it to pay for food and gas, not for the luxuries.
January 16th, 2008 at 3:49 pmHis legislation — the so-called Middle Class Job Protection Act — does nothing for the middle class. Instead, it reduces the corporate tax rate by 25 percent.
They really are masters at double speak, aren't they. The Healthy Forest Act (means clearcutting), the Clear Skys Act (means polluting our environment). I do wish that the Democrats would learn from them. They need to rename the SCHIP bill the "Healthy Child Act". But, that would not be double speak, it would be true. But the branding can work even if it is truthful branding.

January 16th, 2008 at 3:56 pmMinnesota is the "workingest" state??? Is that even a word, or is Bachmann still trying to get through 4th grade English?
This is just supply-side economics in a pretty package to try to appeal to those Americans not paying attention and the 23%ers. This economic policy has proven to be an utter failure twice since Reagan -- we're in the midst of the second failure -- and yet the repukes think that if they keep beating this dead horse it'll somehow come back to life and win the race.
Whether it was Einstein or Franklin who said it, the quote applies here: "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result each time."
Neocon Economics = The Definition of Insanity
January 16th, 2008 at 3:56 pmShe has a point as we see Americans aren't doing anything about the problems the Republicans have put us in except saying Bill Clinton did it or it's the Dems fault. If a Republican gets to be President two jobs wont be enough you'll have to work 4 jobs and send your kids to work. Rev. Huck even wants the Constitution to change to GOD's Law that Republicans have established as Satan's work. Mitt just gave the people of Michigan a promise he knows will never happen but they brought it anyway. As the Middle East is getting richer with the US taxpayers money their laughing all the way to the bank and rightly so.

It is determined by REAL quality of life...HERE IN REALITY...meaning the hours you spend with friends and family, or in recreational, educational or creative pursuits that enrich yourself and others in ways that MONEY CAN'T BY.
Not that you'd have any grasp of that, apparently.
FYI, debt is the opposite of wealth. The American savings rate has never been lower. THAT is precisely what people are working more hours. And YOUR PRESIDENT and YOUR FED CHAIRMAN encouraged Americans to assume all the debt they could sign up for.

I think it's OUTSTANDING that SO many hardworking families work one crap job for the benefits, and the other crap job to cover the increasingly expensive copays the benefits don't cover. It does my heart warm to know so many single mothers in Minnesota work the pole at night after wokring all day in a Wal-mart, to be able to afford baby formula. And that the parents of those single mothers are willing to be live-in babysitters since their old employers' pissed away their pension funds and the fluctuations in the stock market forced them to give up on their dream of enjoying their golden years. This is absolutely the best possible state when you have no other options available to you, and I couldn't be more proud of that fact."
Bachmann then went on to demand peasants to lie on the street so nearby puddles didn't soil her expensive Manholo Blahnik shoes before being whisked away by her taxpayer-covered driver to a Republican fundraiser.

The Democrats are not scared to cut taxes. They just know that cutting taxes when we are borrowing billions of dollars a month from China would be financial suicide. If anything, we will eventually need to increase taxes to get ourselves out of this hole Bush and the Republiscums have gotten us into. The Democrats are talking about a temporary solution to stimulate the economy. But even that isn't going to work. The economy is going to crash because Bush has spent us into a hole like a drunken sailor. The only way to get us out of this financial mess is to make the Corporations pay their fair share of taxes. Then we will be able to begin to pay down the massive debt the Republiscums have gotten us into. And don't scream about how the "poor" corporations can't afford to pay more taxes and not lay off employees. Of course they can, they will just have to lower their profit margins somewhat. They are not going to go broke until they have bankrupted everyone in this country and there are no longer any consumers to buy their goods.

I've gotta call BS on that one. Mn is one of the best places to retire. Living here is one of the things which enabled me to retire early. I'm sure we have as many troubled senior citizens as anywhere, but, we do have some excellent programs and facilities for us.
These include part-time work programs for those who need extra income, or, a way to fill idle hours. I've only been retired a little more than a year so I'm not bored yet. However, I may take advantage of one of them or participate in one of the many "mentoring" programs.

I know that there are many retirees who struggle. I help many of them out. But, I don't know of one who suffers because of some inherent, unique, fault of Minnesota's policies and lifestyle.

Yes, let's end the wars we're losing.
January 16th, 2008 at 6:18 pmWow. If Minnesotans don't vote for Franken, then they're stupider than the Connecticut electorate. And I thought that was as stupid as it could get.

I thought your argument was that tax cuts increase revenue. Which is it? You can't have both sides of the argument. If tax cuts increase revenue, why do you need to cut spending?
January 16th, 2008 at 6:22 pmFranken over Bush toadie Norm Coleman? I would think that this would be a no-brainer, but what do I know? These people sent this raving maniac Bachman to congress.
January 16th, 2008 at 6:24 pmIs Bachmann the Republican party cumdumpster? After all, she is wearing a pearl neckless.
January 16th, 2008 at 6:28 pmThis Bachman chick is so obviously bipolar that it's pathetic! She probably doesn't sleep for weeks herself or keeps herself up using uppers with the dilation of those pupils! Another typical Repuke-lican nutjob! And she's probably the first one to complain that the Dems are making them work 40 hour work weeks, too.
January 16th, 2008 at 6:28 pmI don't know if she's the local sperm dumpster but she looks like a raving lunatic.

January 16th, 2008 at 7:19 pmworkingest???? - the word sounds made up to me - and i wonder how these workingest people cope healthwise? - stress? high blood pressure? exhaustion?
January 16th, 2008 at 7:45 pmIf common folk have to work two or three jobs then we have less time for family, too busy to notice how far this Bi-Partisan assault on the Constitution is progressing, and the stress is causing more illness which will benefit "liberals" like Ted Kennedy who want to eliminate vitamin companies through the FDA regulations by having us put money into pharmaceuticals. Ron Paul, Mike Gravel, and Dennis Kucinich are the only presidential candidates that are not Soft Fascists, along with a handful of others like Dodd and Wexler. Pitiful.....:(

January 16th, 2008 at 9:19 pmSo we are even.
I agree that a corporate tax cut is not the best way to stimulate the economy in the short-term; still, and I know I'm in the minority (of one?) here, but I think it makes good sense for our long-term economic policy. Further, I don't think there's any denying that such a tax cut would help corporations increase their investments and hirings.

January 17th, 2008 at 12:43 am
Well, you guys do need a reduction in corporate taxes...the U.S has some of the highest corporate tax rates among the developed nations at 36%.
Ireland lowered their corporate tax rate to 12% and their economy is booming with great jobs, geez, even Canada has a lower corporate tax rate at 32%.
The same applies to many 'socialist' countries like Norway, Sweden and Finland...they all have lower corporate tax rates with higher sales taxes to make up for it.
America is in desperate need of a corporate tax reduction.

The very same. She's also the one who said she had the inside dope about how Iraq would be split up. She messed up the geography and the Shiite - Sunni placment, had several provinces set aside for terrorist traing territories and then demonstated that she was clueless Iran's ethnic and religious content.
It made you fightened that a US Congressperson, serving on committees, debating and voting on legislation was so completely stupid.

Comment by Cosmonaut — January 17, 2008 @ 2:03 am
But Buffett's point is that most of his earnings are gained through capital gains taxes, which are taxed at a lower rate than the income tax. Perhaps the answer is the reduce the income tax on the middle class, then, rather than increase the capital gains tax, which would discourage risk and investment.

January 17th, 2008 at 7:11 am"His legislation — the so-called Middle Class Job Protection Act — does nothing for the middle class. Instead, it reduces the corporate tax rate by 25 percent."
That is a great idea! Nothing would stimulate the economy and create jobs and increase government revenue better than a corporate tax cut. In fact, since the combination of corporate taxes and personal taxes is double taxation maybe we should eliminate corporate taxes. After that, we should do away with the IRS and initiate a national sales tax. Forcing us middle-class people to fill out a form that even trained accountants have problems with is far from fair. I love living in Florida simply because I do not have to fill out two damn income tax forms every year, as I had to do in over taxed, so-called progressive New Jersey, the Garden State.
January 17th, 2008 at 7:33 amWe spend our whole lives working too much, and not being with the people we love! Our families! She is "against families"!
January 17th, 2008 at 10:41 amFirst, I have no opinion as I don’t have enough information on the subject. I don’t think it’s intelligent or fair to make a judgment on something you haven’t researched or know anything about. Of course it’s apparent the bias of this website so it will attract an extreme of some sort. However, I think we should all consider our own hypocrisy as well. Some of these comments are simply anger and ignorance mixed with complaining and a need to vent. So watch it when you accuse someone of hate speech because you might be guilty of it yourself, which would make you a hypocrite just like the person you are calling a hypocrite. Thank you #19 for having an opinion with some meat in it, not just disagreeing because you don’t like a person. I appreciate that kind of comment and that is what changes people’s minds, education rather than mindless bitter diatribes with no substance. Just my opinion. I’m sure someone will now make a judgment about me though I have put forth no real opinion and tear me apart. Oh well! Viva America! The beauty of free speech. By the way, I work two jobs and not because the government screwed me over, I made mistakes with my life and my finances and now I have to pay for them, a little personal responsibility goes a long way.
January 17th, 2008 at 11:20 amThis is the problem when the majority of those who lead us are the wealthy elite, they and all their friends and colleagues have huge homes, every luxury, and the very best guaranteed retirement plan. Why should they care about the middle class or give a thought to those who live in poverty? And our wealthy ruling elite also have the absolute best healthcare plan, all for free (or nearly free) simply because they govern us, and… well they think they deserve it, anyway it’s law. So why should they really give it one thought. They simply have too much to do helping big corporations maximize the bottom line profits, and finding ways to continue the massive military-industrial complex that has fueled the USA’s economy so successfully since WWII.

Our corporate tax law hurts our global competitiveness. Companies have an incentive to build offices abroad and hire workers abroad when they account for our terribly high corporate tax rate. The idea is anathema to the left because it assists corporations directly, but you guys fail to understand how it will also help workers and boost the overall American economy.

I find that interesting, since the Dems also want to cut taxes for the wealthiest in the form of a corporate tax cut.
Frankly, I don't see a lot of fresh policy ideas coming from either side. Hillary dabbled in her baby bonds idea for a bit, but other than that the Democrats have been kind of reticent about creating big changes. Just look at the Social Security debate Barack Obama tried to have.
January 17th, 2008 at 2:39 pmThe only change the Dems seem to want is mandating health care coverage, which seems a little statist to me.
Here's the link, by the way, to the story about the Dems cutting the corporate tax rate.

Pity that she clearly didn't put quite as much effort into her studies when she was in school as the people whom she praises are doing now by working two jobs -- because had she done so, she would have known that there's no such word as "workingest".
