O’Reilly: ‘There’s not many’ homeless veterans.
On last night’s O’Reilly Factor, host Bill O’Reilly challenged John Edwards’ claim that 200,000 veterans “will go to sleep under bridges and on grates” because they are homeless. O’Reilly said, “They may be out there, but there’s not many of them out there. Okay? … If you know where’s a veteran, sleeping under a bridge, you call me immediately, and we will make sure that man does not do it.” The Washington Post checked into Edwards’ claim and reported that the Department of Veterans Affairs does indeed report that about 195,000 veterans are “homeless on any given night.”
UPDATE: The Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America have launched a petition to tell Bill he was wrong.

Apparently he’s never been to Washington, DC before and seen all of the homeless veterans who sleep on the mall and in the alleys at night. This guy shoots off his big mouth without all of the facts and expects the idiots who watch his show to believe what ever he says. For the most part am sure they do. If the Washington post says that there are 195,000 homeless Vets, then apparently he doesn’t think that number is distrubing. This jerk sits in his big office but he lives in a small small world of fools who enjoy the freedom we vets provided him and looks the other way when we need help. Anyone who defends this idiot’s view is a small person too and will like him pay the ultimate price come judgement day.

Bartlebee, that’s a damn good idea. If someone could publish O’Rielly’s address and distribute it throughout homeless centers across America, they could go there in mass and really create a scene. Unfortunately, these people have a full-time job just staying alive, so it’s unreasonable to expect any kind of political action from them.

January 16th, 2008 at 1:04 pmBill’s probably right. Some of those homeless veterans are sleeping in alleys or in shelters or on park benches. It’s just wrong to say they’re all sleeping under bridges or on grates.
See, you have to keep this all IN CONTEXT. Unless you listen to BillO every day, you don’t understand what he’s really saying, you just think you do because you heard his words. It’s the same with Rush; if you don’t listen to him every day, year after year, you won’t understand what he’s actually saying and you’ll make the mistake of thinking that a few sentences he’s uttered should be taken literally. There, like, parables. That’s it, parables. They’re both like Jesus.

January 16th, 2008 at 1:09 pmThis is another example of a favorite right-wing approach to statistics: if they don’t say what you want them to say, simply dispute the figures without any hard evidence at all.
Once when I was having a discussion about health coverage and I mentioned “45 million uninsured”, he disputed that and said it was probably no more than 5 million, because 45 million “seemed way too high”. I asked him where he got his figure, and sent him a link to the US Census bureau website, which backed up my figure.
I never got a reply from him on that subject.

My brother, a Vietnam Veteran, who is in a VA therapy group for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), informs me that members of his group who meet and welcome back returning Iraq vets are reporting that SOME vets who have lost limbs are NOT being provided with prostheses! (Hearsay, but . . . ?)

I’m sure there are many of us who would take that veteran’s picture and military info and show up at Bill’s with it. And we’re probably angrier about his mouth. The veteran’s as you said have more important things to worry about, like survival.

January 16th, 2008 at 1:34 pmThere were a couple of homeless veterans sleeping under a bridge near Billo’s house so he had them “removed” after all he has to keep his property value up. Besides he didn’t pay taxes to build bridges so these non taxpayers could use them for shelter. If sleeping out under the stars was good enough for the veterans during the war, why do they need a bridge now?

We have friends dealing with their veteran son right now. He has nightmares, loud noises totally unglue him. The physical problems are healing but how long for the mental problems watching his buddies die day after day.
