Boehner to Hoyer: ‘I’m going to flip you the bird.’

Today, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) held a press briefing on Congress’s economic stimulus plans. Although Boehner initially promised to work together “in a bipartisan way,” he later joked that he has other plans for the Speaker:

BOEHNER: Madam Speaker, thank you for the invitation, and we’re certainly glad to be here. [...]

And with a crisis underway in the housing market, I think it’s appropriate that Congress respond, and I’m hopeful that we can come together in a bipartisan way to address the needs of the American people.

PELOSI: Thank you all very much.

Thank you, Mr. Leader.

BOEHNER: As soon as they put those cameras away, I’m going to flip you the bird.

(LAUGHTER)

UPDATE: The Swamp is now reporting that Boehner’s gesture was actually directed at House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD). (Our headline has been changed.)

Digg It!

Did they actually catch him saying that on tape? If so, he should be censured by the House for showing such disrespect to the Speaker.

    Comment by Southern Man

We are not proud of our Speaker because she does not stand up to Bully Boy Bush. And we say here how disappointed we are in her performance as Speaker. Unlike you retards, we will criticize our own when they don’t do the right thing. You retard lemmings just walk in lock step behind your leaders even though they are leading you off a cliff.

You are 100% correct there. Just look what they did to Cynthia McKinney. If Pelosi had said that to Boner the Republiscums would be demanding an immediate apology and that Pelosi be censured.

  9. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper says:

As many of you know, I respond to many of the conservative posters around here when they make reasonable arguments and respond to arguments in a reasonable manner. But, as usual, I’m going to ask my fellow lefties here to ignore this moronic piece of human excrement who goes by the name of “Southern Man.” Again, he’s a dick, a moron, a fool, a mysogynist and a fascist. He’s not worth our time and energy because he is not here to argue a point. He is here to provoke anger. You’ve all seen it over and over so why play. He has shown that if you ignore him, he’ll slink back into his dark hole and not bother us. Please don’t respond to him.

    Indeed Jack (@12),

I don’t think he even exists; I think he’s a fictional character designed to discourage us from talking politics to our neighbors. It is an effort to shrink the public forumn, generate political apathy, and suppress democracy. The pseudonymn ‘Souther Man’ is a clumsy clue. They don’t want us to talk to their base, who just might not be as solid as they’d like us to believe.

I agree. There are some trolls here who try to make a point even though it is usually skewed right (like Keloti) and then there are the trolls who are here only to throw excrement on the walls and see how much people will respond (like GiGi, SM and their ilk).

Sure, sure. If he’s on tape saying this to the Speaker of the House, he should be publically censured. Give me a break with your “he’s joking.” She’s two steps from the Oval Office. If someone “joked” like that on the floor of congress regarding the president, they’d be censured in a New York minute. (that is unless it was a Repube congress and a Democratic President)

There is nothing to get riled up about here.

Teasing is OK only between friends who understand each other and have worked through the problem the teasing is about. Otherwise teasing is meant to be one upmanship and designed to hurt.

I doubt if they are friends and to do this publicly, as done here, is really bad form, to be nice about it. The laughter is a cover for the real feelings which can not be shown without paying a political price. The fact that the audience laughed was the response Boehner wanted IMO. He was playing to an audience at Pelosi’s expense. Under these circumstances, she would have no choice but to “giggle and wink” and “take the ribbing like a man… er champ.” Sad but true. This is politics, after all.

So, yes, I believe that there is reason to get riled up about it.

  29. Menehune says:

There are plenty of people in Ohio hurting from the housing crisis–and I suspect these people, be they Republican or Democrat expect their representatives in Congress to work with whoever (Pelosi included) is necessary to provide solutions. I can’t imagine the people in Ohio will enjoy their leaders saying one thing for the camera about bipartisanship and then the next minute basically telling the other side to F–K off. Because that equals no solutions forthcoming. I sincerely hope the good people of Ohio finally see Weepy McBoner for the bowel irregularity he is. First Ex-Lax. Then Flush.

  31. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper says:

Al Franken calls it “kidding on the square.” You say something you really want to say that’s an insult, but smile while you say it, so that’s supposed to make it ok. It’s a slimy, cowardly way to make an attack. Just crybaby’s style.

Comment by Ret. Col. Jack Ripper

If he was not joking then he was not joking. I can not say nor know if he was joking or not. I implied that the laughter and TP’s “he later joked…” was indicative of a “ribbing.”

Only those there can say. People can joke and laugh about such things.

He may have been serious as a heart attack as well! We do not know.

But it is really, quite minor. Just think about how one would say, “I’d flip you the bird.” If said with malice, as an insult, perhaps there are grounds for censure — although I know not the House rules regarding such a censure.

If said jokingly, with a smile, what then?

Besides. A precendent has been set. Dick Cheney told Leahy to “Fukc Off” and NOTHING HAPPENED.

So too is this well said. Context is almost everything with these things.

Civility in the halls of Congress is perhaps to be expected and of course wanted. But there used to be times where fights have broken out. They are after all human beings just like the rest of us.

Sadly, I do not know about any rules of conduct that members of Congress are supposed to abide by. I suppose a Google search is in order. And I am glad that I hung around to read other people’s comments here.

Maybe this is an insight into Boehner’s character — he always appeared rather smarmy to me. We all know the character of people like Lott, Delay and Cheney (to list just three of the most offensive). So, actually, I am not surprised at this. Maybe it is should be a big deal.

I would like to have been there. Hopefully there will be more coverage of this, supplying us all with more facts and better context.

  42. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper says:

frazzle: “Besides. A precendent has been set. Dick Cheney told Leahy to “Fukc Off” and NOTHING HAPPENED.”

Yes, but I think Repubes controlled congress when Cheney said that. Dems should have more respect for the insitution. Repubes have been showing they have no respect almost from the moment they took congress in 1994. Duke Cunningham, sobbing convict that he is now, stood on the floor of congress and referred to President Clinton as a “traitor” and a “scumbag.” Democrats protested but Repubes blew them off. A Repube senator warned Clinton that if he came to his state, he might get shot. Dems protested but Repubes blew them off. I’d like to think Dems have more respect and class than that.

Jack Jett, repubes in the Senate have already set an historical record for obstruction with 64 filibusters and their session is not even over. They’ve been employing the same strategy in the House using different methods. They won’t cooperate with anything. Are you blaming Pelosi for that?

The strategy was to obstruct as much legislation as they could and then convince morons who were not informed that the Dems couldn’t get anything done. Looks to me like the strategy has worked with you.

  49. ralph the wonder llama says:

Merlin made a great point. Teasing, joking and ribbing require a certain amount of friendliness in order to be inoffensive. If there is rancor between the parties (as there certainly is on Capital Hill) then the “joking” is just an excuse to get away with an insult.

It’s childish. But then, that should surprise nobody.

  59. mr.frazzlebottom says:

I’d like to think Dems have more respect and class than that.

Comment by Ret. Col. Jack Ripper

Yeah, well, let us then wait and see what happens over this.

However, you make the leftist (your term if I recall correctly) mistake that Democrats somehow are of general better character than Republicans.

They are not, really; they simply have different definitions of and understanding of what values are.

I think republicans are wrong in their values, as do most commenters here. Most republicans adhere to a mythlogical view of America that is actually detrimental to our interests. But that is a bigger issue than the one we are (supposed to be) discussing here.

“Dems should have more respect?” Why say that? That implies that Republicans should, for some reason, have less respect. Which is dumb; and, even worse, inciteful to discourse.

The Democratic controlled congress has already stated that many things are “off the table” — such as impeachment — and therefore why expect this statement of Boehner’s to cause some sort of new course for the Dems to take to re-take the “high ground” of class and respect? It will not.

  60. Ditch Mitch KY says:

Can anyone imagine the media response if any Democrat made this comment to any Republican in the HR or Senate? I’m sure that the holier-than-thou GOP members of Congress will jump all over Boner for his rude obnoxious public display of ignorance and disrespect.

But, I’m not holding my breath. Heckuva Job, Boner.
