Political activists were disappointed by President Bush’s trip to the Middle East, which lacked “the strong calls for democratization made earlier in his administration.” On Wednesday, Bush instead commended Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak for taking steps toward “political reforms“:
Hisham Kassem, an Egyptian political activist who last year received a U.S. National Endowment for Democracy award, was left dispirited by Bush’s tour. [...]
Anger grew in his voice. “Bush, as far as American foreign policy vis-a-vis democracy, civil rights, is right back to square one,” Kassem added. “This trip marks it.”
The new 2008 Freedom House survey ranked Egypt as “not free” and gave it one of the lowest scores for political rights.
Bush is sort of disappointing, isn’t he…?
January 17th, 2008 at 12:22 pmEgypt has the type of democracy that bush has in mind for the US.
Nazi….just for the trolls
January 17th, 2008 at 12:23 pmTake a number, get in line….
January 17th, 2008 at 12:23 pmWow — you mean there are still some people out there who have any hope at all that Bush will live up to his earlier “strong calls”? I was pretty sure that everybody had given up on this guy and were just waiting out the clock.
January 17th, 2008 at 12:23 pmDemocracy is only a goal we seek for our enemies–never our “friends” or even ourselves, it seems.
January 17th, 2008 at 12:25 pmLook – Ambassador Marc Ginsberg just posted a very interesting diary at Huntington Post http://www.huffingtonpost.com/amb-marc-ginsberg/that-saudi-funded-west-wi_b_81909.html
suggesting that most of this trip was really about raising BIG BUCKS for the Chimps Presidential Library! What a way to run a country – unreal!

In Bush Fantasy World
Bush, as far as American foreign policy vis-a-vis democracy, civil rights, is right back to square one
Not just foreign policy.
January 17th, 2008 at 12:31 pmHey Kassem, he’s not so good at domestic policy vis-a-vis democracy, civil rights here in the USA either. And that Freedom House survey marked us as free? Obviously this survey has issues.

January 17th, 2008 at 12:36 pmdisappointed in Bush
Have they been living in a cave in Antartica for the last 7 years? Disappointed that the man who was installed in office by the Supreme Court and who received fewer popular votes than his opponent isn’t pushing harder for democracy?
Hello! Wake up and smell reality, dude.
January 17th, 2008 at 12:38 pmYou people are all lucky to be free. What do you think that is some sort of right. Me and Huck are going to fry up some squirrel and discuss sum serious issues…like baby jesus, re-writing the constitution, and clean our guns.
January 17th, 2008 at 12:38 pmYup, looks like the Disappointment-in-chief’s Middle Eastern bucket list didn’t sell for him.
January 17th, 2008 at 12:40 pmCanada Puts US on Torture Watch List
This cannot be all that surprising since at the end of November Canadian Courts tossed out a “refugee/immigration” treaty with the US based, partially, on the courts recognition of the fact that the US tortures prisoners.
Notable is the fact that more than half of the places specifically cited, Afghanistan, GITMO, the United States and even the Syrian prison Arar was sent to under the US rendition (kidnapping?) program, are torture havens all under the direct control of… The United States.

January 17th, 2008 at 12:49 pmYou’d have to be a fool to actually believe Bush cares about democracy. American foreign policy is imperialism, Bush is just a lot more blatant about it than presidents in the past. If things get better with a Obama or Hillary administration we should be pleasantly surprised.

If you have a problem with a link to a progressive website… What are you doing here? lol jk :)
Besides… The CTV News link does include the additional story of the Canadian Courts decision, which is important to the overall picture, IMHO.
January 17th, 2008 at 1:05 pmbillyjoejimbob–yes, we are free. Free from the ability to make a living, free from healthcare, free from prosperity, free from security, etc., etc.
Any fool who thinks Bush’s middle east trip had anything to do with promoting democracy is the worst kink of fool. That trip was all about planning a war with Iran.
January 17th, 2008 at 1:09 pmWHOOPS! “Besides… The CTV News link does NOT include the additional story of the Canadian Courts decision, which is important to the overall picture, IMHO.”

Hey you got any spare sheckles to spare for my liberry? Gonna be a good one, gonna put a Starbucks in there and I got them folks from Madame Toussau’s making me a waterboarding, extreme rendition diorama! It’s gonna be AWESOME! Those poor Arabs don’t realize that georgejr considers their form of government superior to our own – During his first few months in office he lamented about how much he’d prefer to be a dictator; and has spent the past seven years working toward that goal.
Besides, “Democracy” sounds too, uh, Democratic; and he’s a Republican.
January 17th, 2008 at 6:00 pmMr. Kassem, be thankful that Bush doesn’t bring more “Democracy” to your country, Ã la Iraqois.
