Stewart to Jonah: ‘I don’t know what you’re saying.’»

Jonah Goldberg appeared on the Daily Show last night to tout his new book, “Liberal Fascism.” Jon Stewart spent 18 minutes disputing the premise of Goldberg’s book (which was condensed down into a six-minute clip), asking at one point in exasperation, “How is organic food fascist?” and “I must say you totally misrepresent what progressive means.” Watch it:

I always wonder why people like Jonah Goldberg even go on shows like the daily show. Do they think it’ll improve their sales?

I really wish I could see the whole 18 minutes. The six they showed were amazing. Goldberg should go into hiding. But No doubt the Conservative Book Club will be giving his books away along with the Shrew Coulter.

Arrogance. Pure arrogance. Profound pure arrogance that no one knows more than they do. Stewart’s “I don’t know what you are saying” is heard as proof of Stewart’s lack of comprehension, not Goldberg’s lack of sense.

  8. thirdparty Says:

Yeah, Stewart should really post the entire 18 minutes on his site.

Sort of OT, but let’s not forget that Jonah Goldberg reneged on his bet with Juan Cole about the Iraq war, in which Goldberg promised to donate $1,000 to the USO if the war was still going in 2005.

Bingo. “I don’t think you read the book.” No, no, Stewart read the book, Doughy, it’s just that it makes no fking sense at all.

Organic food is fascist because fascist believed in an organic whole. Stewart’s response was perfect: “Mustaches are fascist!” DP is an idiot.

Stewart is contracted to do a certain amount of shows, or he loses his network contract, so he has been doing what he ( and Colbert ) used to do when the show first started, improvising till the strike is over, since there are no scripts.

Wait, didn’t they already make a special exception by having Goldberg on and then editing it? I’ve never seen Jon Stewart go 18 minutes with someone - in fact, I don’t think he’s edited an interview that much ever. So, as long as all that editing takes place, I think they should make a special exception. Wouldn’t you love to see the rest?

  46. bobcat_grad Says:

If I were Stewart, I would absolutely give it to Jonah Goldberg to show the whole thing. Or put it on their website. If he can make Goldberg look like a complete moron in 6 minutes, I would love to see what he’s reduced to in 18.

Goldberg somehow thinks that the other 12 minutes will show what a brilliant man he is the same way he thought it was a good idea to go on this show in the first place. Most of his arguments are so paper thin and disingenuous, you wonder how he says it without laughing at the absurdity of it.

  47. ralph the wonder llama Says:

I’m eager to see the full 18 minutes. I’m sure Exley thinks that the missing pieces are 12 minutes of Jonah eviscerating Jon Stewart, but I suspect not.

What I’m interested in is whether Jon started off by getting the Doughy pantload’s working definition of “facsism”. That would seem to be useful, since DP doesn’t really seem to have a solid idea of what the term means.

  48. Exley Says:

#43 Actually, Gummitch, of you look carefully (actually, it is quit evident) virtually every new book sold by Amazon is discounted between 40-45% (Look at the other books on the best-seller list). That is one of the reasons it is such an immensely popular and successful site.

That was the ultimate subtlety: consciously to induce unconsciousness, and then, once again, to become unconscious of the act of hypnosis you had just performed. I didn’t suggest that at all, only that without such a discount, the book isn’t a “bestseller”. If it was an actual “bestseller” it would show up on the NY Times list, which you managed to ignore completely.

(Keith Olbermann’s book, however, is number 12 on the Times list. )

While I suspect you’re just trying to be the token, reactionary leftist here, putting your politics before common sense, I’ll respond anyway. Obviously, being that it is “A Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” and considering that I watch his show a lot, I think it’s pretty clear that it’s up to the host to control the length of the interview. Instead, he kept asking questions, which is fine, but you’ve gotta realize that it’ll make the interview longer. But, whatever, I’m sure you’ll just have some idiotic rationale for why they shouldn’t post this video clip.

It’s almost as though you are afraid…

Obviously, being that it is “A Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” and considering that I watch his show a lot, I think it’s pretty clear that it’s up to the host to control the length of the interview. Instead, he kept asking questions

If you “watch his show a lot”, you would know it’s obvious that Mr. Stewart’s interviews are nearly always edited for length.

  61. Exley Says:

#44 — ThirdParty is correct….Even in the beginning of the show, Stewart admitted that the Daily Show cut the interview in a way they never have before because of the length of Goldberg’s interview was longer than normal.

So, this was not a standard Daily Show interview and was not a standard editing.

  62. Dr. Matt Says:

I’ve never seen Jon Stewart go 18 minutes with someone - in fact, I don’t think he’s edited an interview that much ever. So, as long as all that editing takes place, I think they should make a special exception. Wouldn’t you love to see the rest?

Who would know if he went on for 18 minutes with someone at all unless he added on a disclaimer for each and every interview? If you don’t “think” he edits just about every interview for length than you are clearly obtuse and live in an altered reality.

  63. Dr. Matt Says:

    Correction: *How* would *you* know…..

  64. Dr. Matt Says:

So, this was not a standard Daily Show interview and was not a standard editing.

Say who? Please list TDS “standard” guidelines for interviews and editing. We know you far, far reich-wingers “think” you speak for others, but you are always wrong when doing so. Try again, princess.

  65. Exley Says:

    #59, Dr. Matt,

You really need to read more carefully….Go to the bottom of the best-seller list page and you will see this language:

“Rankings reflect sales, for the week ending Jan. 5, at many thousands of venues where a wide range of general interest books are sold nationwide. These include hundreds of independent book retailers (statistically weighted to represent all such outlets); national, regional and local chains; online and multimedia entertainment retailers; university, gift, supermarket, discount department stores and newsstands.”

Thus, as we clearly see, the best-seller list that Times will publish on Sunday, January 20, reflect sales for the week ending January 5.

Since Goldberg’s book was not released until January 8, it obviously does not and will not appear on the best-seller list to be published on January 20.

In summation, Dr. Matt is incorrect.

  68. bobcat_grad Says:

Semantics, people. At the end of the day, Goldberg looks idiotic at best.

Regarding the NY Times bestsellers list, who cares? I could either point out that the current #1 is “In Defense of Food” with the tag line of “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants” and say Goldberg’s book will have to knock that piece of literary genius or I could point out that Colbert’s book is STILL number 2 after months and months of being released.

And I beg of ‘A’ Daily Show, please release the other 12 minutes. I could use more laughter in my day.

  69. ralph the wonder llama Says:

People, you’ve let Exley get you off on a tangent of whether or not the Doughy Pantload’s book is a “best-seller” or not. The more relevant discussion would be whether its contents have any merit or not.

Judging by the (edited) interview with Jon Stewart, and the various excerpts available throught cyberspace, I’d guess not.

Exley? Do YOU think that the fact that the Nazis embraced the concept of the “organic whole” logically justifies the conclusion that organic foods are fascist, as DP claims?

  70. Exley Says:

    #69, Ralph,

    1. I was not the one who erroneously tried to argue that a best-seller list compiled on January 5 was somehow evidence that Goldberg’s book, which was released on January 8, was somehow evidence that Goldberg’s book had tanked.

That was Dr. Matt’s error. I simply corrected his sloppily researched assertion.

    2. I have not read Goldberg’s book so I really cannot comment on your question. And since even Stewart admits the interview is edited “choppy as hell,” it is not really fair to judge what Goldberg is saying based on The Daily Show’s selectively chosen responses.

  71. Shayne Says:

Actually, it is currently #3 on the Amazon.com best-seller list.

    Comment by Exley — January 17, 2008 @ 2:37 pm

Amazon.com best-seller list? You are such a tool Exley.

  72. thirdparty Says:

On the question of whether there’s precedent for an interview to go as long as this one, I reject the idea that I would have to attend every interview to know. The reality is that Stewart told the television audience that the interview went long as thus was choppy. Find me a time when he’s done that before. Until then, this interview should be held to a different standard and therefore should be published in its entirety. I think it’s a win-win; more hits for comedycentral.com, more laughs for us, and Goldberg gets what he wants.

  73. Frosty Cupcake Says:

At any rate, the look on Goldberg’s face at the end of the interview was priceless. Priceless!

I for one hope you Neo-Chuckleheads eat it up. Study it. Then go out there in the real world and commence to convince everyone else that it’s true. Who, by the way, will be stoically staring at you in complete and utter bewilderment.

Who first dubbed Goldberg “Doughy Pantload”? It’s freakin’ hilarious, and ohhhhh so fitting.

  77. Shayne Says:

It had to be edited because Stewart let so many “F” bombs fly. And that isn’t HBO where you can get away with it. That’s why it’s choppy, at one point Stewart asked “Are we going to be able to use any of this?” Only Comedy Cental executives will be able to decide whether to release it and if it’s worth it for them to do it.

  78. Marie Says:

The reason that fakes like Goldberg go on tv is for MONEY!
Hawking their books - their agents line them up on these shows.
Goldberg should have known enough to quietly slink away from the interview; instead, his ego allowed him to continue down the path of self-humiliation. Stewart made toast of him - and deservedly so.

Jonah Goldberg would never be where he is today were it not that his mother was a confidante of Linda Tripp during the Lewinsky affair. He is a chickenhawk, and an American imperialist. He is married to a former aide to Ashcroft.

the uncomprehending befuddlement slowly growing into awkward embarrassment at teh extent he’d been pwn3d…classic…

Thom Hartmann had Pantload on his AAR show tuesday, and was clearly outraged ye almost stupefied by the outrageous, impossible intellectual dishonesty required to stretch history, fact, and reason so far as to actually conflate liberalism–certainly in its ’small-l incarnation, of the last 50 years–with anything remotely resembling the structures of fascism recently and fairly comprehensively catalogued in various places, for the last 20-plus years at least.

  81. Marie Says:

When Hartmann interviewed him on his show, he also made hash of Goldberg’s argument. Even the title of the book is an oxymoron.

I don’t see what 12 minutes of “eff-bombs” would add to his case. His book’s title is a false premise. It’s hard to get past that simple fact.

  87. gummitch Says:

    2. I have not read Goldberg’s book so I really cannot comment on your question. And since even Stewart admits the interview is edited “choppy as hell,” it is not really fair to judge what Goldberg is saying based on The Daily Show’s selectively chosen responses.

    Comment by Exley — January 17, 2008 @ 3:35 pm

Seriously? That’s how you’ll weasel out of commenting on goldberg’s contortion trying to connect organic food and Nazis? Or claiming that one can draw any conclusions at all from his referencing New Republic magazine from the 20s? And this is really the first time you’ve read or heard anything about the premises of this book?

That’s lame, Exley, even for you.

  88. ralph the wonder llama Says:

Did anyone follow the link to the E&P article? It notes K’Lo’s reaction in The Corner. She says, “There are some rare exceptions for the Right-minded — Bill Kristol’s had decent experiences, Rick Santorum remarkably did when his book came out — but Stewart generally winds up trying to make a joke out of your or your issues, or is just downright unfair. “

Imagine that. A comedian, on a comedy show, on a cable network called Comedy Central, “trying to make a joke out of you or your issues”. Huh. No one could have predicted that would happen.

And I love the wishful-thinking “Right-minded”. Yeah. Bill Kristol is “Right-minded”. BWAHAHAHAHA.

  89. DigDug Says:

    From the Webster dictionary:

    Main Entry: fas·cism
    Function: noun

a political philosophy, movement, or regime (as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition

    And…

    Main Entry: lib·er·al·ism
    Function: noun

a theory in economics emphasizing individual freedom from restraint and usually based on free competition, the self-regulating market, and the gold standard c: a political philosophy based on belief in progress, the essential goodness of the human race, and the autonomy of the individual and standing for the protection of political and civil liberties

It would be hard to find two terms that have more opposite meaning than these two.

  90. Frosty Cupcake Says:

Leave it to a lying right-winger to put those two terms together. I mean, you gotta admire the sheer gall of these people…

  91. gummitch Says:

Imagine that. A comedian, on a comedy show, on a cable network called Comedy Central, “trying to make a joke out of you or your issues”. Huh. No one could have predicted that would happen.

Comment by ralph the wonder llama — January 17, 2008 @ 4:34 pm

A lot of righties handle themselves without problem on the show, because Jon Stewart is unfailingly polite to them. If he treated them like, Bill O, they probably wouldn’t be so willing to appear on the show at all, and Kristol and McCain have been on a number of times.

But, yeah, it’s a comedy show. Hard to imagine that an interview would end up with a comedic turn.

  92. Slink Says:

    Exley,

Wow number three at Amazon. To neatly fit in with DP incoherent thesis and framework, you do realize that Hitler’s Mein Kampf was the number one (not third)selling book in Germany from 1933 through the the end of the war? In fact, his book outsold the bible in Germany.

  93. thirdparty Says:

It had to be edited because Stewart let so many “F” bombs fly. And that isn’t HBO where you can get away with it. That’s why it’s choppy, at one point Stewart asked “Are we going to be able to use any of this?” Only Comedy Cental executives will be able to decide whether to release it and if it’s worth it for them to do it.

    Comment by Shayne — January 17, 2008 @ 3:50 pm

Why not just bleep out the F-Bombs? That’s what they did during one clip that went on TV; not sure why they couldn’t go online and censor the rest. The reason it was edited, fairly, was that the interview went long. The question we’re arguing over is whether they should publish the entire interview on the website. I suspect the reason Stewart said, “Are we going to be able to use any of this,” was because it was such a long and heated interview. There were more F-Bombs, I’m sure, but just bleep them.

  94. thirdparty Says:

Although I’ve argued for putting the entire clip on Comedy Central’s website, and I do enjoy playing Devil’s Advocate, I want to be clear that I disagree with Goldberg. I think he may be on to something if the argument is that soft paternalism (smoking bans, trans fat bans, etc.) is fascist, but I’m not sure if that’s what he says in the book.

I did find this interesting definition of fascism from the Oxford Concise Dictionary of Politics:

Fascism: “A right-wing nationalist ideology or movement with a totalitarian and hierarchical structure that is fundamentally opposed to democracy and liberalism.”

  95. Impolitics Says:

Fascism: “A right-wing nationalist ideology or movement with a totalitarian and hierarchical structure that is fundamentally opposed to democracy and liberalism.”

    Comment by thirdparty — January 17, 2008 @ 4:58 pm

    And that should settle that.

Seriously, if he had chosen the title “Liberal Totalitarianism”, he might have a case. But “Liberal Fascism” is nonsensical.

Once that threshold is crossed he may as well have written about “Famous All-Powerful Deities in the NFL”, or, “The Wild Unicorns of Central Park”.

  96. RagingGurrl Says:

Everyone knows that NeoCons are more similar to fascists - that’s what Jonah is afraid of. He’s trying, in a Luntz sort of way - to redefine their image before it’s too later.
But he’s too stupid to realize linking fascism to liberalism is insane.

  97. IALib Says:

Goldberg is pandering to the right wing lemmings who never read past the headlines. I can see the red necks now, standing infront of this book somewhere saying, “Yep, I knew them liberals was fascists!”

  98. lm945 Says:

Jon Stewart isn’t being fair? But… but… Fox does the same thing on a daily basis, and they’re “fair and balanced”.

Oh, right, I forgot. It’s only “fair” when it’s “balanced” in the neocons’ favor.

  99. kasinca Says:

If Monica had not hit her knees for Clinton and told that tramp about it, Johah would be working at Best Buy.

  100. Freakaloin Says:

If the far right, (Jonah Goldberg, O’Reilly, Hannity, Bush, Cheney, Kristol, Rove, Limbaugh, etc…), hates Hillary Clinton this much then I’ll be voting for Hillary.

I want to be the exact opposite of scumbags like Jonah Goldberg, George Bush, and Dick Cheney.

they don’t really hate hillary. they want her to win if a republican can’t. she’ll keep their status quo like the clintons always do. the hate is just pretend play for the masses…

voting hillary is no different than a vote for bush/cheney as far as foreign policy goes…and most of the domestic as well…

  101. MCMetal Says:

    fascism

a political philosophy, movement, or regime (as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition

    Liberal

a: of, favoring, or based upon the principles of liberalism b: of or constituting a political party advocating or associated with the principles of political liberalism; especially : of or constituting a political party in the United Kingdom associated with ideals of individual especially economic freedom, greater individual participation in government, and constitutional, political, and administrative reforms designed to secure these objectives

What’s your next useless stupid book going to be about , Jonah Shitstain ?
Neoconservatism and it’s acceptance and encouragement of outside influences and enlightenment ?

  102. Buckie Boy Says:

Watched the clip, he doesn’t know his a$$ from a hole in the ground.

Republican Fascism, now there you have something real, Liberal Fascism…WTF…are you freaking nuts?

    Buck Fush

  103. Brain From Planet Arous Says:

Only for Hillary if she runs against McPain, Mutt Rommel, or Ghouliani.

  104. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper Says:

Impolitics: “Seriously, if he had chosen the title “Liberal Totalitarianism”, he might have a case.”

There is no such thing as “liberal totalitarianism.” That would be a contradiction in terms. There are examples of extreme leftist communist totalitarianism, but these are authoritarian leftists, not liberals. One of the first things Stalin did was round up liberals and send them off to gulags.

  105. Marie Says:

    Kasinca, #101
    Well put.

  106. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper Says:

This book is simply another neocon example of taking your own weakness and accusing the opposition of the same thing to blunt any criticism on the subject. Neocon philosophy is extremely close to fascism. Leo Strauss believed that society should be run by a special elite and they should lie to the people to achieve their authoritarian goals.

  107. woodguy Says:

#44 — ThirdParty is correct….Even in the beginning of the show, Stewart admitted that the Daily Show cut the interview in a way they never have before because of the length of Goldberg’s interview was longer than normal.

So, this was not a standard Daily Show interview and was not a standard editing.

    Comment by Exley — January 17, 2008 @ 3:10 pm

The reason the Goldberg interview is longer than normal is that The Pastey Doughy Fat and Onoxious Pantload is full of more fully digested bovine excrement most of Stewart’s guests.
In fact, how could any interview with DP be in any way normal?

  108. republicans hate facts Says:

ROTFL!!! Like ANYTHING from Goldberg is STANDARD!!! His PREMISE is as RETARDED AS YOU - MONKEY CHILD! ROTFL!!

  109. SomeRandomGuy Says:

So is DP saying that what we call Liberalism today is actually Progressivism? Then his title makes sense I guess. . . this word stuff is so hard to figure out sometimes . . .

Whatever this ideology is, the posters on this page are some of the most vitriolic and intolerant I’ve ever come across. But maybe I’m more liberal and open-minded than most.

  110. Evil Spaniard Says:

Jonah Goldberg appeared on the Daily Show last night to tout his new book, “Liberal Fascism.”

Empyrical demonstration: If you put a million monkeys with typewriters (in this case computer keyboards), one of them will write a book. Although it is undecipherable gibberish.

ROTFL!!! That’s because VITRIOLIC and INTOLERANT RIGHT WINGNUTS like YOU are PERMITTED TO POST HERE!! ROTFL!!! You aren’t LIBERAL or OPEN MINDED, you’re just another DELUSIONAL ‘TARDED REPUBLICAN FOOL!

  112. moondancer Says:

There is not enough minutes in the day for heaping scorn on doughy pantload. I need 25 hours to do his stupidity justice. Stewart did a nice job on the corn sweetener/cheetos bellied slob. But he needs to be brought to his knees. Sometimes it merciful to bury a moron under all his unsold books.

  113. JMOHR Says:

First, everyone should remember, as Jon Stewart would be the first to tell you, that the Daily Report is first and foremost a comedy show.

Really? Have you ever gone to redstate.com, little green footballs, free republic, or any other political blog? It’s the same, or worse everywhere else.

I have a bonsai forum that I go to, and If you want calm, polite discussion I highly recommend. But any political forum is going to have angry people arguing. Kinda comes with the territory…

An entry I recall from a right wing site in ‘06: “bought myself a new woodchipper, wish I could throw a few libs in it just to break it in…”

  116. Pursang Says:

*First Prize is one copy of the book “Liberal Fascism.”
*Second Prize is two copies of the book “Liberal Fascism.”
*Third Prize is three copies of the book “Liberal Fascism.” and a sharp stick to shove in to your eyes.

Actually to be kind all winners (losers?) should get the sharp stick in the eye because it’s sure better than reading this load of crap. I’m not the type that automatically dismisses the other side of the argument. I don’t believe all topics are simply black or white. There are cases though such as the ideas of a Jonah Goldberg that are the rare exception. I do dismiss him simply because his ideas are so devoid of rational thought that they make absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Having said all that…poor Doughy Pantload, he’s so misunderstood by us evil liberals. We just don’t understand his genius.

  117. Lefty Patriot Says:

But maybe I’m more liberal and open-minded than most.

    Comment by SomeRandomGuy — January 17, 2008 @ 8:51 pm

    probably not.

  118. Max-1 Says:

    .

Jonah Goldberg, he doth project too much.

  119. Lupeyg2 Says:

Look out for DP’s next blockbuster - “Subjective Objectivism”, which explains how everything he says is actually fact, simply because he says it is.

  120. Croaker Says:

This book represents a shining real-world example of Orewellian “truthspeak”. War is peace and liberalism is fascism. They are doing everything they can to re-write history and blame their failures on the other side. Pathetic morons.

  121. FredricRice Says:

    LOL! Love it!!!

Rightarded traitors are at times amusing.
