After hearing testimony from CIA Acting General Counsel John A. Rizzo, Rep. Peter Hoekstra (R-MI) indicated yesterday that CIA official Jose A. Rodriguez Jr. “ordered the destruction of videotapes depicting agency interrogation sessions even though he was directed not to do so.” Rodriguez was previously said to never have been “instructed to preserve them.”
The Americans for Legal Immigration Political Action Committee, a group dedicated to fighting illegal immigration, launched an effort to draft CNN’s Lou Dobbs into the presidential race as an independent.
In recognition of the difficulty in passing timelines for withdrawal from Iraq, anti-war groups will instead “push for legislation to prevent President Bush from entering into a long-term agreement with the Iraqi government that could keep significant numbers of troops in Iraq for years to come.”
Americans are “revved up — and ready to vote.” According to a new USA Today/Gallup poll, 62 percent of voters “say they’re more enthusiastic about voting than usual. That’s 17 percentage points higher than at this point in 2000 and 6 points higher than in 2004 — a year in which November turnout was the highest in a generation.”
Asked about an incident this month involving Iranian speedboats and U.S. warships in the Strait of Hormuz, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates said “he did not know who was responsible for a threat made over the radio that brought the United States and Iran close to confrontation.”
The number of abortions has “plunged to 1.2 million a year, down 25% since peaking in 1990,” according to a new report by the Guttmacher Institute. Pro-choice advocates noted that women “may be avoiding unwanted pregnancies, thanks in part to the morning-after pill, emergency contraception that is sold without a prescription to women 18 and older.”
Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke “told lawmakers that he can support tax cuts or spending measures to stimulate the economy” that are “quick and temporary,” even “if they increase the budget deficit.” Bernanke refused to comment on linking “a stimulus package with a permanent extension of President Bush’s tax cuts,” which may disappoint conservatives.
At an event in South Carolina yesterday, a questioner angrily confronted John McCain about his support for removal of the Confederate flag from the state Capitol. “My answer to that is I can’t be more proud of the overwhelming majority of the people of this state who came together in taking that flag off the top of the Capitol,” said McCain to a standing ovation.
68 percent: Americans who “say individuals should be required to have medical insurance, with government help for those who cannot afford it,” according to a new poll by The Commonwealth Fund. In the survey, even 52 percent of Republicans said they support health care mandates.
And finally: Yesterday, Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) “tried another career on for size: flight attendant.” Playing flight attendant on a chartered 737 carrying her staff and members of the media, Clinton said over the loud speaker, “Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen, and welcome aboard the maiden flight of Hill Force One.” She joked that the FAA prohibits the use of electronic devices “that may be used to transmit a negative story about me” and added that the “in-flight entertainment” would be her “stump speech.” (Video here.)

Last night Keith Olbermann made no mention of the exclusion of Dennis Kucinich from Tuesday's Democratic debate held on MSNBC.
January 17th, 2008 at 9:06 amKeith is always quick, and rightly so, to criticize Bill O'Reilly for doing Rupert Murdoch's dirty work. Last night KO did General Electric's dirty work. GE took Dennis Kucinich all the way to the Nevada Supreme Court to deny him the right to speak to Nevada's Democrats. It was an offense far worse than most of the silly issues Keith regulary lambasts Bill O'Reilly about. Political Censorship is odeous and fascist. Mr. Kucinich is the Peace Candidate. The candidate most against the war and the building of nuclear power plants. These are two of GE's biggest businesses. Yet, Mr. Olbermann chose to not say a word about any of it. Shame on you Keith! I'm a five-day a week watcher and I don't say any of this easily. Tonight Keith, you are the Worst Person in the World.

While that's an improvement over normal apathy, it's still sad that voter turnout is only a fraction of the US population. It's one of the first things I address when I hear someone complaining about something in government, conservative or progressive alike, I ask, "Did you vote in the last election?" If they say yes, go ahead and state your opinion. If they say no, I politely tell them they have no room to complain if they didn't contribute to the process.

There will be nothing to stop the new Democratic president from bringing our troops home. Just like there will be nothing to stop the new Democratic president from firing all the Bush appointees who were then made civil service employees. If George Bush doesn't have to follow international law or the law of our land, then neither will the new Democratic president have to follow the law. The Bush Crime Family, with the assistance of the Republiscums, have set a terrible precedent that they will live to regret.

Stewart picked him apart.
Stewart: "You say that people throw the word 'Facism' around too easily, right?"

January 17th, 2008 at 9:35 amU.S. Boosts Its Use of Airstrikes In Iraq
Strategy Supports Troop Increase
The U.S. military conducted more than five times as many airstrikes in Iraq last year as it did in 2006, targeting al-Qaeda safe houses, insurgent bombmaking facilities and weapons stockpiles in an aggressive strategy aimed at supporting the U.S. troop increase by overwhelming enemies with air power.

And this is a large part of the reason why US soldier deaths are down in Iraq and civilian casualties are up. We have stopped sending our troops out on roads full of IED's in favor of bombing the shit out of the country, a process that kills numerous innocent Iraqi's.

A former Republican congressman from west Michigan was indicted Wednesday on federal charges of money laundering, conspiracy, and obstruction of justice in a scheme to help an Islamic charity funnel money to terrorists linked to Al Qaeda and the Taliban.
January 17th, 2008 at 9:37 amMark Siljander, 56, a former state legislator from St. Joseph County was hired by the Islamic American Relief Agency of Columbia, MO in 2004 to help the group removed from a list of terrorist-linked charities according to the DOJ.
Siljander received $50,000 that defendants connected to the charity stole from the federal government, and laundered through a pair of foundations controlled by Siljander.

January 17th, 2008 at 9:45 amWow -- John McCain continues to do and say things that might make me like him. Of course, he's got a ways to go before I would actually support him -- he would have to change his positions on Iraq, tax cuts, health care, abortion, gay marriage, and preserving the constitutional rights of Americans first.
But on the issues of torture, campaign financing, lobbying and ethics reform, global warming, and taking care of our men and women in uniform, we more or less agree. And when he stands up for his beliefs instead of pandering to people who want to hang onto such a divisive symbol as the Confederate flag, he gets points.

Um...how does Lou Dobbs feel about this? Generally, it's rare for pundits, columnists, talk show hosts, or any journalist with a national profile to run for any political office -- except as a publicity stunt. Why? It's far easier to criticize and comment on how somebody else does their job than to do it yourself and be the target of somebody else's punditry. And then there's the pay cut...

Chapin testified he approached Gen. Franks in 2005, and he agreed to let his signature be used on mass mailings seeking contributions to his charities.
"He helped us raise millions and millions of dollars more than we would have," Chapin told the hearing, chaired by Congressman Henry Waxman, D- Calif.
Congressman Waxman said Gen. Franks had since disassociated himself from Chapin's charities and asked that his name be removed from the solicitation.

Amen. If I'm not mistaken (not an impossibility) I believe his vaunted "success" in business goes like this: Become CEO of a company in financial trouble; "reorganize the company" (i.e., eliminate jobs and lay off thousands of workers), proclaim the company a success and become rich; rinse and repeat.
Face it, folks, Mitt didn't get his hundreds of millions by "looking out for the working man." His record of corporate takeovers and wholesale layoffs needs to be fully exposed, and there is no person better qualified to do this than John Edwards.
