Following Podhoretz’s Lead, Right Wing Continues Push For ‘Bombing Campaign’ Against Iran ‘Now’»

In the June 2007 issue of Commentary, neoconservative icon Norman Podhoretz laid out “The Case for Bombing Iran,” in which he argued that “the only prudent–indeed, the only responsible–course” is to “strike” Iran “as soon as it is logistically possible.” Though the recent NIE has slowed down hawkish belligerence towards Iran a bit, Podhoretz is still arguing that President Bush should take “military action” against Iran “soon.”

In a new article for Commentary, titled “Stopping Iran: Why the Case for Military Action Still Stands,” he argues that Bush should commence with a “bombing campaign”:

Iran can still be stopped from getting the bomb and even more millions of lives can be saved–but only provided that we summon up the courage to see what is staring us in the face and then act on what we see.

Podhoretz isn’t alone in his desire to keep pushing for an attack on Iran. Ever since Podhoretz’s recent article was released online, right-wing radio host Hugh Hewitt has been promoting it, encouraging his audience to “read the whole thing. Twice.” Hewitt has also been asking his guests, including New York Times columnist William Kristol, if they agree with Podhoretz’s assessment. Scarily, they do.

Bill Kristol:

HEWITT: Bill Kristol, do you think it is possible, not even likely, but just possible that the Bush administration will take military action against Iran in their last year?

KRISTOL: I think it’s possible. I think people were a little too quick after that National Intelligence Estimate came out, which was, I think, an attempt by the intelligence agencies to prevent the Bush administration from sort of seriously considering taking action. And I think people were too quick to say ooh, that rules it out, you know, they’re just paralyzed for the next year.

National Review’s Mark Steyn:

If we had a CIA that actually did anything, as opposed to sitting around Langley reading e-mail all day, we would be able to do that. But because we haven’t done that, the bombing option is becoming the only one that will be left, if not for this president, then for somebody.

Hewitt brought Podhoretz on his show yesterday, where he explicitly endorsed bombing Iran “now”:

HEWITT: Do you think President Bush needs to authorize air strikes against Iran now?

PODHORETZ: Yes, I do. The question is whether he will, although I thought, I was pretty confident that he would before the National Intelligence Estimate came out in early December. I still think in the end, he will order air strikes before he leaves office. But I am, as the NIE would say, I offer that prediction now with only low to moderate confidence.

HH: Well, I agree with your assessment of what has to happen.

With their desire to bomb Iran undeterred by the NIE, Hewitt and company are presumably pleased with President Bush’s repeated efforts to distance himself from the report.

Digg It!

Good ol’ Stormin’ Norman “What’s a Kurd?” Podhoretz. By the way, little known fact but the name Podhoretz was shortened many years ago to the more familiar, Putz.

If we had a CIA that actually did anything, as opposed to sitting around Langley reading e-mail all day, we would be able to do that.

Perhaps if we hadn’t outed the CIA’s cover organization that gathered intelligence on Iranian nuclear capabilities (and the undercover agent who managed it) we would have had more viable, actionable intelligence on Iran and would have known that these clowns’ rhetoric was nothing but bloviating and warmongering sooner. Coincidence? I think not!

These “experts” like Podhoretz and, in particular, William “the Bloody” Kristol that keep getting trotted out by the media and held up as experts and scholars after having been horribly wrong about everything are starting to piss me off! I think that if Podhoretz and Kristol, both self-avowed patriots, are so concerned about the US facing this menace that is the Iranian regime’s alleged ambitions (that they have zero evidence to support), they should lead the charge and travel to Tehran to sell the Iranian people (who they think will support a US attack of their country) on the idea of our attacking them.

  6. gummitch Says:

My theory is that the neocons never truly renounced their early commitment to communism, but only pretended to do so. In reality, they are doing their best to destroy this country the way the Soviet Union was ultimately destroyed — by overextending the military and crippling the economy. Podhoretz is answering to his masters, buried deep in Moscow (not Idaho) and doing his best to destroy the US this year, before a president with a brain appears to thwart him.

  7. David_Peace Says:

Do they ever consider the lives of those they end when they start dropping bombs? And knowing the raging —– — this president has for death and destruction what makes anyone think that he will only stop at the nuclear sites? What’s to stop him from obliterating Tehran? Furthermore, if they do bomb the nuclear sites, have they considered the resulting clouds of radioactive dust that will be sent up, which will end up raining down on people, crops…?

Its amazing how the media continues to gloss over the fact that, regardless of who’s culpable in the Plame affair, that by blowing her cover, the United States lost a valuable intelligence link into Iran. And so the data that we are now forced to rely on is not as good as it should have been.

I’m sure that it was just a coincidence that the one person who could have found intel that would confirm or refute the NIE was the one person who was outed… and that one person just happened to be the wife of a political foe. I bet that the current regime thought it was their birthdays when they saw the stars align for that little bit of dirty politics.

I would have disregarded this statement as fringe a few years ago but I have had to quit 2 doctors lately because they went on right wing rants while I was paying for a doctors visit. Do we have any democrat doctors anymore or are they all in it just for the money? Either way they are going to have to snap out of it…..

  19. missmolly Says:

Let me get this straight. We suspect that Iraq has WMDs. Inspectors report that Iraq has no WMDs. We bomb Iraq anyway. Years later, we still haven’t found WMDs. In the meantime, we have gotten bogged down in an expensive quagmire, destablized a key country in the Middle East, tied up valuable military personnel and equipment, put our national debt into the stratosphere, enabled more terrorists to be recruited, and have earned the contempt of the world.

We suspect that Iran is developing nuclear weapons. A report developed by several intelligence agencies says that Iran is no longer developing nuclear weapons. So if we bomb Iran, why do the idiots in charge think the result will be any different?

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

  20. A Patriot Acting Says:

Any sane person can clearly see that the neo-conservative agenda is treasonous to the United States. It would cripple our allready over stretched military and hobble our allready limping economy not to mention putting us even poorer standing with our allies and cost us more American blood. Their agenda also has NO BASE in actual facts. If they or our esteemed Administration had even ONE shred of evidence to back up their claims of either an Iranian nuclear weapons program OR the Iranian Armys meddling in Iraq we’d had heard and seen it long ago. That Bush/Cheney spend so much time listening to and pushing the agenda of these completely misguided terrorists known as the neocons and sending out their minions to preach the word to complicit news organizations in direct defiance of the will of the American people, the military commanders, the majority in both houses of Congress, our foreign allies and our intelligence community should be more than the proof needed to charge our President and our Vice President with treason or begin impeachment hearings.

  21. tom Says:

Somebody please send this imbecile back to the Middle East to jaw-bone his Saudi butt-buddies about oil prices. If he hadn’t started his dirty little avoidable war in Iraq, there would be less “risk premium” in oil prices and he’d have less of a problem on his hands right now.

All this moron seems able to do is burn the toast and scrape it, burn the toast and scrape it, burn the toast and scrape it. Over and over and over again.

What Fred probably expects is that doctors will show more interest in his symptoms, diagnosis and treatment than they exhibit for the dithering neo-cons who are ruining this country. Since he is paying for the doctor’s time, I don’t think that this is too much to expect.

    Do you?

They are infiltrating our culture with the likes of William Shatner and Michael J. Fox (at least Limbaugh recognizes Fox as a threat) and Alex Trebeck. Their infiltration of our entertainment industry is used to spread sex and drugs among our children.

They have even taken over our professional Hockey !

    Comment by Frank M — January 18, 2008 @ 12:08 pm

Um…yeah. I think that would involve killing every last person in that country and leaving a huge crater where Iran used to be.

You don’t understand that bombing somebody tends to piss them off more that it makes them docile and compliant. Think about it — if somebody dropped bombs on this country, what do you think our reaction would be?

The only time we were able to wage an air war without a ground war followup was when we bombed Japan in 1945. There were two reasons why that succeeded. First, the weapons we used were more destructive than anything the world had ever seen before, and our damage was profound. Second, we had ground troops ready to invade, and Japan knew it.

Come to think of it, Bush and Frank are two peas in a pod. Maybe Bush just wants to be remembered, wants the attention. Well, the way he has fcked up to this point, he will be remembered. If he bombs Iran, that will only solidify his place in history as the absolute worst POS our country has ever seen.

I argue that it is useful to have Frank here today. Sure he’s polluting the thread, but he gives insight into the sort of defective personality type that continues to support Bush and the neocons. It is important to know that people like Frank exist, and that Bush derives much of his power from the support of these barbarians. Frank isn’t a 29 percenter. OT - When your Jewish dentist starts a conversation with you about a news item on CNN about expanding Jewish settlements in the West Bank right before he starts drilling just keep your mouth shut. I didn’t. Can you say “Marathon Man”?

And I apologize to any progressive Jewish dentists who may be here. I’m sure you would never do that.

    OK, I did. You’re right.

  83. pbg Says:

    Frank:
If we bomb Iran back into the stone age, we lose two and a half million barrels a day in oil output.
That will mean 5 buck a gallon gas. Do you think America can survive that?

Here’s a lot of things that could happen:
    1) Pakistan falls, as the militant Islamists rise up. We then have a radical Islamic regime with MULTIPLE nuclear weapons and missiles. They could even acclaim Osama bin Laden as their lleader.

    2) Russia moves into Iran. They already have numerous treaties with Iran, and Khamenei might even invite them.
What would happen if Russia announced that a nuclear attack on Iran would be met with in kind by Russia? Who has thousands of MIRVed ICBMs that could still destroy the US many times over?
You think Putin wouldn’t do that? Especially since the rest of the world would stand behind him?

    3) Do you think we’re ready for another Arab Oil Embargo? Not 5 buck a gallon gas, but 10, and with mass shortages? And Venezuela joining in? And China refusing to buy our debt–and making up for Saudi Arabia’s shortfall?

Being a vet wouldn’t necessarily give you an outright answer. Although I did serve in the AF from ‘67 to ‘71.

You’re caught in a moral dilemma. On one hand you have to obey the orders from the Commander in Chief. On the other hand you do not have to obey an order that you feel is illegal and you can’t use the excuse that you were following orders as a means of getting away from your actions.

Bush/Cheney have been doing a LOT of things to provoke a reaction from Iran, although they keep saying that Iran is the one provoking a response.

I think the majority of the world could see through any nonsense there, but I worry about the 30 percent loony toons here in the US.

I could also see where these games of chicken could lead to an accident that the President would use as a justification for unilateral action by the President. That despite the fact that Congress has told him more than once he better not try that.

Look to Colin Powell and his actions in front of the UN for your answer. Although he admitted later that the intel was not correct, he still made the presentation. If he was still in the Army, would he have gone to war with Iraq on the President’s orders knowing things were wrong? My guess is yes.

  87. nanlichi Says:

Thanks dogjudge, I agree that Bush is trying to provoke a response. This may sound a little tin-foil hat, but what if Bush really thinks (for whatever reason, including insanity) that bombing Iran is the right thing to do and he, by God, is going to do it. What role does Congress have? Who could stop him?

What does he care about history, or whether it is the right thing to do. If no one can stop him, we could very well see bombs over Iran even if 90% of Americans are against it.

  89. Doc Rock Says:

    Let’s bomb Podhoetz instead?

  90. dogjudge Says:

That is exactly my biggest fear.

Bush, pushed by Cheney, have just about fully developed the idea of an all powerful President who only has to answer to himself. Unfortunately because of partisan politics, the Republicans have allowed him to pursue that agenda unabated. Congress appears to be unwilling to reign in any of Bush’s forays into the powers of the other branches of government.

It sort of reminds me of the incident with Andrew Jackson when he was President. Jackson wanted to relocate the Cherokees from NC and Georgia to Arkansas and other places. The case went to the Supreme Court. They ruled that Jackson didn’t have the authority to do it. Jackson did it anyway. When asked about it Jackson replied to the effect that the Supreme Court made their decision, let them enforce their decision.

The ramifications for all of this is bad enough for the US. Unfortunately, it could be bad for the world.

  91. squidbilly Says:

Pud-hurts militant unilateralism is insane… such blindness!!!

Russia (they gave Iran some nuclear material) and China (oil needed to maintain their economic growth) would be pissed big time…

Bye bye US’s ABM plans in Europe (already seen with suspicion).

What if China decides to cash in its billions of US bonds as a consequence (good bye weak US dollar-hello Euro)?

Europe and Japan wouldn’t be too happy either-a significant percentage of their oil comes from Iran (their economies will be effected by surging gas prices).

Southern Iraq will become active again with unrest - the weak Iraq government will probably get even weaker due to shiite-sunni rifts and their Iranian connections.

More terrorist attacks throughout the Mid East…etc….

Iran would probably continue its nuclear ambitions after bombings anyway.

Then again Pud-hurts would call to bomb anyone else if needed.

  92. GSD Says:

This is why Nicholas Burns is leaving the Bush Administration. He does not want to be part of this cabal when Bush and Cheney launch a blitzkrieg that will kill thousands.

One thing that I haven’t seen discussed is the oil supply for the rest of the world.

Assume there was strife between the US and Iran.

The Straits of Hormuz are not that large. It wouldn’t take much action around the Straits to essentially shut them down. Who would want to risk sending a tanker full of oil through the Straits while other folks were shooting at each other.

The last thing that I saw, and if I remember it correctly, about 50 percent of the world’s oil goes through the Straits.

Could you imagine the disruption to the worlds’ economies if the Straits were shut down for a few weeks?

Gee, I wonder which side all of the affected countries would fall behind?

  94. RUCerious Says:

    #70 dogjudge, my point at #18, exactly!!! :>{

  95. RUCerious Says:

RUCerious, what do you think would happen?

    Pray for a fragging.

I have a sneaking suspicion the joint chiefs might resign, or some other high level military authority may ask congress to impeach, rather than carry out this madman’s orders.
The military knows what the result of such an attack would be, and I hope they know it’s their careers down the terlet if they go along.

    Sort of a political fragging.

If that doesn’t work, it’s horseshoes and hand grenades…

    Simple.

Do you want to eventually engage China and Russia?

    Thought not.

Here’s the thing about bullies. They push small people or countries around until somebody with more guts, strength, or power pushes them back.

Israel? HAHAHAHAHAHALOLOLOL!! Coming to aid the USA!!!!????

Now China also is holding a large amount of US debt. What does that tell you? The USA is not manufacturing any more. Eventually no one will want US products.

I’m completely in favor of bombing Iran right now, on one condition:

Kristol, Steyn, Hewitt, Jonah Loadpants, and especially Podhoretz all agree to strap themselves to the bunker-busters and ride them down to the targets, Slim Pickens-style. That would prove they really are patriotic Americans and not just the garden-variety chickenhawks they seem to be.

Relax. I am more trouble by the endless use of the phrase “drive safe” and all the other poor uses of language. It is only slander if you are so thin skinned enough to let it be. I see little protest over “righttard” and all of that. In all cases disrespect is disrespect and it’s intentional use should be avoided

  106. Cal Malenky Says:

I’m predicting that Bush/Cheney will wait until the conventions are over to bomb Iran. If the GOP looks unlikely to win in November, Bush will start bombing Iran so he can stick the Democrat with another war and get his way once again. He’ll beat his dad in the number of wars with that one. 41 had Panama and the Gulf. 43 has Afghanistan and Iraq. One more beats dad.
He’s already told Olmert that Iran is an existential threat and that “all options are on the table.” He sucked up to the Saudis, competitors to Iran in oil and power in the middle east. They’d love it if he bombed Iran. Oil goes to $200/barrel overnight.
Expect Bush to screw things up more before he goes back to the ranch.

Is there some reason why anyone publically threatening to bomb Iran shouldn’t be arrested as a terrorist? Just asking.

Why does our media allow these Zionist Nazis to air their hate on public television? Shouldn’t they have someone on to counter-balance their venom? Maybe someone like Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn, Robert Sheer. A decent Jew. Or any intelligent person. Should crackpots go unchallenged?
