O’Reilly Admits There Are 200K Homeless Vets, Still Says Edwards ‘Is A Liar’ Who Owes ‘An Apology’»

Recently, Fox News host Bill O’Reilly attacked former senator John Edwards for noting the 200,000 homeless veterans who “go to sleep under bridges and on grates” every night. “The only thing sleeping under a bridge is that guy’s brain,” quipped O’Reilly. O’Reilly continued his attack earlier this week, claiming “They may be out there, but there’s not many of them out there.”

Last night, however, O’Reilly pulled an about-face, acknowledging to National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse President Joseph Califano that there are upwards of 200,000 homeless vets in America:

CALIFANO: We have 200,000 veterans who are homeless.

O’REILLY: Right.

O’Reilly admitted Edwards’ claim was right, but still refused to admit his own inaccuracies. He also continued to attack the former senator, calling him “a liar” and “a charlatan.” O’Reilly insisted that homelessness “has nothing to do with the economy” and is “mostly because of addiction and mental illness.”

“So if the poor are not destitute in America, and they obviously are not,” declared O’Reilly. “John Edwards owes us an apology.”

UPDATE: Robert Greenwald at Fox Attacks has more on O’Reilly’s war against “non-existent” homeless veterans.

UPDATE II: Crooks and Liars has more.

UPDATE III: Brandon Friedman writes “Bill O’Reilly just needs to go.”

Transcript:

O’REILLY: To hype up this class warfare, Edwards is now bringing in homeless veterans.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

EDWARDS: Tonight, across this country, 200,000 men and women who wear our uniform and can serve this country patriotically, veterans, will go to sleep under bridges and on grates.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

O’REILLY: Now I’ve said on this program that we will pay for homeless veterans to be taken to the Edwards mansion in North Carolina for shelter. Of course, that’s an immature remark, I know that, but there’s a reason I’m saying it. Certainly there are homeless veterans, but it’s not because of the economy. It’s mostly because of addiction and mental illness, something politicians can do little about. But if Edwards admits the truth, it takes away the class warfare issue, which is his only issue. […]

O’REILLY: Yet according to the government census, poor households in America have lots of stuff. 97 percent have a color TV, 78 percent a DVD player, 80 percent an air conditioner, 73 percent a car or truck, 63 percent cable or satellite TV, and 43 percent of poor households in the USA own the home they are living in.

So if the poor are not destitute in America, and they obviously are not, why are so many veterans sleeping under bridges, John Edwards? The answer again they’re mostly addicted or mentally ill. It has nothing to do with the economy.

Edwards is a charlatan, a man either too uninformed or too dishonest to be elected to anything. I am tired of hearing this nonsense from him and other callow politicians. We deal with facts here on The Factor, not fiction. John Edwards owes us an apology. […]

JOSEPH CALIFANO: We have 200,000 veterans who are homeless.

O’REILLY: Right. […]

O’REILLY: But this is wrong for a major presidential candidate to demagogue this issue and try to tell the people it’s America’s economic system that’s causing this problem, is a lie, it’s wrong, he should be called on it. […]

CALIFANO: This is not the only issue that happens to, Bill. Let me just say there’s enormous denial about this.

O’REILLY: I’m not in denial. I don’t think any…[…]

CALIFANO: I - well, they don’t want - they don’t to - they don’t recognize that substance abuse…

O’REILLY: They recognize.

CALIFANO: Drives all our social ills.

O’REILLY: Edwards knows this. He’s lying. He’s lying. He knows it. Everybody knows it.

CALIFANO: I don’t believe that John Edwards is lying.

O’REILLY: Then he’s dumb.

CALIFANO: No, he’s not.

O’REILLY: One or the other. […]

O’REILLY: But I hope you understand my anger. It’s an anger that if you want to solve the problem for the veterans, let’s be honest about it. Let’s not demagogue it like Edwards is doing.

  7. missmolly Says:

At least O’Reilly acknowledges that Edwards’ figure of homeless veterans was close to the mark, but he’s still missing the point that Edward was making.

Yes, many homeless people are substance addicted and/or have mental problems that preclude their being able to help themselves. But in O’Reilly’s mind, the mentally ill and the substance addicted don’t deserve any help, veterans or not. After all, if the mentally ill got that way by choice, we’re off the hook — right?

In every war we’ve fought, troops have come home suffering from shell shock, PTSD, and other mental disorders. Some can be helped, others eventually submit to the demons by committing suicide, and still others just try to survive with their fragmented brains the best they can — which often means turning to alcohol and drugs.

Edwards is pointing out that the people who have fought and put themselves in harm’s way for this country deserve better. He doesn’t own O’Reilly an apology. O’Reilly owes veterans an apology for dissing them in this way.

  10. gummitch Says:

Riiight. Because BillO hates a demagogue. . . that isn’t him.

And then there’s this statement of “fact”: So if the poor are not destitute in America, and they obviously are not,

How can you be poor and not be destitute? WTF is he talking about? And how can he equate “homeless” people with people whose homes have televisions, DVD players, etc? Hellllo? Is there anything in there, between those ears, Bill?

  11. hellinabucket Says:

Edwards scares the crap out of O’Reilly. He first denies there are that many homeless vets and then he moves the goal posts and claim the most of the homeless are drug addicts and mentally ill. and then jumps to the poor (without quantifying what “poor” means) touting all the material goods they have. BO ignores the fact of these homeless and how this country has turned it’s back on them.

  12. SP Biloxi Says:

Well said, missmolly. I agree completely.

  14. hellinabucket Says:

John Edwards words from his website:

“Tonight, 200,000 brave veterans will be homeless, and they will sleep in shelters, on the streets, under bridges, and on grates – and Bill O’Reilly doesn’t think there is a problem. For someone who spends a lot of time shouting about patriotism, you would think he would be outraged by the treatment of our homeless veterans. How many more will it take before we wake up and solve this crisis?

“These are the facts. Today, one out of four of our nation’s homeless are veterans, and a recent federal government study found that a third of our homeless live in places ‘not meant for human habitation.’ This is a serious moral failing of our government and our nation. Our veterans have done everything we have asked of them and more, and it’s time we honor our sacred contract with them.

“While George Bush and Bill O’Reilly continue to ignore our homeless veterans, the American people, whether we are Democrats, Republicans, or Independents, must speak out and stand up for those who have stood up for us. We must do everything we can to solve this terrible problem – and we must begin by reaching out to these men and women who are suffering – not pretending they do not exist. After our veterans have served our country honorably, isn’t one homeless veteran one too many?”

Stick to the issue at hand BO.

  15. hellinabucket Says:

John Edwards doesn’t owe BO an apology. He might want to thank him because of all the airtime being devoted to Mr. Edwards and this worthy issue. But no apology.

  16. ralph the wonder llama Says:

JOSEPH CALIFANO: We have 200,000 veterans who are homeless.

    O’REILLY: Right. […]

THAT’s the extent of O’Lielly’s “acknowledgment”?

When a guest makes the statement, Bildo doesn’t dispute it this time?

Did he ever acknowledge that he was, y’know… WRONG when he said there were no near as many as 200,000 homeless veterans?

  17. rastaman Says:

it’s only a matter of time before this indignant sociopath attacks some sacred cow topic that will finally land him under the bridge himself.

i personally can’t wait….and if he thinks i am going to give him some spare change or the leftover meal that i have in my hand…forget it.

  18. JMOHR Says:

One would logically question whether a person so ignorant as O’Reilly was on the number of homeless veterans would also be extemely ignorant as to the cause of their being homeless. Apparently, those who follow O’Reilly would never be able to question his credibility no matter how far off he has been or how often he has been wrong.

I do not know all of the causes of homelessness. Maybe some was caused by the veteran’s inability to receive adequate care for mental conditions caused by military service. Maybe some was caused by simple bad luck. Maybe some was caused by previous crippling health care costs. Where do O’Reilly’s figures come from? An Enquiring mind would like to know.

  27. katy Says:

i forwarded the message from IAVA about all this to my dittohead-in-law… here is most of his reply… f.y.i. - he has a bumper sticker that reads: I Support President George W. Bush…

Thanks for the information about homeless and Bill O’s opinion. It don’t really make any difference how many homeless are veterans, or for that matter, college grads or airline pilots or whatever. The fact is that they are out there and society will not allow them to be helped. They used to be in the “Zone Centers” and the ACLU and politicians decided that you could not hold people in confinement against their will unless they were criminals: even if it was proven that they could not fend for themselves and were dangerous to themselves.

These people will remain on the street until society takes some responsible action. I don’t want them to be confined inhumanly but they do need some protection from themselves and the elements.

In our travels, [we] have seen many variations of these people all over the country, including in Juneau, Alaska. (It has to be hard to be homeless in Alaska.) I have talked to police officers in various places in the country and they say that most of these people are chronic alcoholics. They are not drunks because they are drunks; they are drunks because of some other underlying condition. Society does not care and will not take any responsibility for their care, because it would deprive them of their rights.

The original point of your message was the percentage of veterans that are street people. I am not sure what that has to do with anything. I am aware that the congress has grossly under funded the Veterans Administration budget and caused many social ills concerning veterans. Congress doesn’t give a damn. Veterans Affairs issues do not get money for pet projects in their congressional district and don’t get them reelected. That is what it is all about, pork and reelection. Stop the budget bleeding pet projects and institute term limits and it will eliminate a lot of problems.

Democrat or Republican, they are playing the same game. They want power to do something. Ask them what they want to do and they tell you, “save the world”, “stop the war”, “tax the rich”, “provide medical care for everyone”. Ask for specifics and they say, “we have a plan”, but you never hear the specifics of the plan. When I get phone calls about political donations or political opinion (which is usually a lead in to requesting more donations), I ask where the candidate stands on term limits and tax cuts. It usually gets real quiet on the other end.

Sorry to get so verbose, these people really piss me off. I am tired of the political games. These people are ruining this country for our grand children and great grand children, yours and mine. That is the real cost of all this irresponsible activity. I want a safe, free and economically stable place for my descendents to live.

    delusion, thy face is republican…
i’m pretty sure this is representative of a majority of repugs…

“…society will not allow them to be helped…” huh???

real nice guy too… this stuff breaks my heart at times…
i will never figure it out…

    Dr. Matt,

Good catch! That was my take as well. Not once did Edwards blame the homelessness of vets on the economy. This is the way disingenuous blowhards like O’Lielly operate.: Misstate what others say to set up a straw man, then twist the facts to confuse “the folks”, as BO “watches out for you.” Someone should ask him if the vets are part of “the folks”, and with lies and distortions like this he is watching out for them.

It became a huge reality after Reagan took office. I wonder why that is…? I don’t believe the word homeless was even used until then… before that they were called hobos and hobos did not include families. Along with that horrific problem was the birth of for profit health care… began under Reagan of course. Only in America, under republican rule do we have homeless vets, homeless families, 18,000 of the working class dying each year from lack of health care…
For these reasons one has to be a complete heartless idiot to not vote straight ticket democratic in the next election.

The US Air Force and private industry spent a fair amount of dollars training me in quality processes. Strange since I was an attorney by profession. However, it was foreward looking government agency and aerospace firm that recognized that quality principles applied to administrative and managment processes as well as to manufacturing. The concept is called “best-in-class.” You look at those who have the best record, determine the factors driving their success and either adopt them or improve upon them.

The same applies to social programs. When you limit yourself to not having our poor as bad off as those in the Sudan, then you will never be successful. In the long run, as seems to be the case in the US, the economy will suffer as the poor become a bigger economic drag. It takes a certain amount of income equality to drive any economy by providing robust local demand and production.

Mr. Edwards never once said our piss poor economy was the reason for homeless vets. Don’t let facts stand in the way of your rant.

I caught Edward’s town hall on CSpan the other day ( CSPAN is the only place you can actually hear what democratic candidates, other than ObaHillary is saying ).

I like what he says. I really like his position and I understand why the media has been marginalizing him along with the other Democratic candidates. I may just vote for him, since he has more of a chance to break through the MSM election fixing barrier and actually winning than Kucinich does, unfortunately.

  71. MCMetal Says:

O’Reilly insisted that homelessness “has nothing to do with the economy” and is “mostly because of addiction and mental illness.”

I always knew that O’Lielly was an unequalled imbecile , but this line of thought is completely insane….

A lot of those that are suffering from mental illnesses turn to drugs/alcohol because of inaccurate diagnosis and/or the inability to get a proper mental evaluation and subsequent rehabilitation/treatment ; or they simply cannot afford medicine(s) they need…….And I’m in no way advocating drug use or trying to condone it , but did that coward Pervert O’Lielly ever stop to consider some of the horrors these Vets have endured and/or witnessed , and come to understand how easily susceptible they are to looking to forget it all ; and what ‘better’ , simpler , quicker way is there than to become a drug user ?

Here’s a link that refutes Falafel Boy , and adds to his legendary idiocy…

I would bet most posters here and others from the informed population agree. Kucinich, Edwards are the ones the corporate MSM , (MSM also invested in other corporate areas such as defense and health care) fear the most. Can we get through to the dimwitted hypnotized TV viewers the truth of this corporate take over? With Edwards money which he has little of because he takes no corplorate money?

Let us not forget homelessness and for profit health care began under Reagan… Reagan closed down many of the mental institutions putting the mentally ill in the streets. And, from lack of mental health facilities/modes of treatment the school shooting have gone up.

  74. had enough Says:

And due to the fact we have so many of the mentally ill untreated the Prison Industrialized Complex have made billions for many. Our country, the US, has 5% of the worlds population, yet we hold 25% of the worlds prisoners.
