Oliver Stone’s ‘Bush.’

Oliver Stone’s ‘Bush.’»

Daily Variety writes that film director Oliver Stone “has set his sights on his next directing project, ‘Bush,’ a film focusing on the life and presidency of George W. Bush.” He has chosen actor Josh Brolin to play the leading part. Stone told Variety that he wants this movie to be a deep introspective:

Here, I’m the referee, and I want a fair, true portrait of the man. How did Bush go from an alcoholic bum to the most powerful figure in the world? It’s like Frank Capra territory on one hand, but I’ll also cover the demons in his private life, his bouts with his dad and his conversion to Christianity, which explains a lot of where he is coming from. It includes his belief that God personally chose him to be president of the United States, and his coming into his own with the stunning, preemptive attack on Iraq. It will contain surprises for Bush supporters and his detractors.

  1. arguewithmydad Says:

Will the movie include the fact that he violated U.S. and International law by ordering the torturing of prisoners? Both non-citizens and citizens alike have been tortured by Bush. I hope Oliver will portray that War Crime.

  2. Dave C Says:

I hope when Stone says it includes “Bush coming into his own” he means “his own hand”. Cus I haven’t seen Bush accomplish anything positive so far. Maybe Stone knows how this crappy reality show ends.

  3. Dumb_Fox Says:

his coming into his own with the stunning, preemptive attack on Iraq.

So Bush finds himself by committing the cardinal violation of International Law, initiating a war of aggression. Okay…

And I suppose Stone will throw a big surprise to this Bush detractor by presenting Bush, and not Cheney, as the President.

Anyways, what you can be sure about is that the 23%ers will be in a blind rage if there is so much as a scintilla of criticism of His Holiness, Lord Arbusto of Kennebunkport.

  4. conscriptor Says:

of course, by the time this is realeased, will there be an audience left in this country that will care to revisit anything having to do with this cowboy?

    moving on?

  11. Lefty Patriot Says:

I hope he doesn’t skip the part where Bush becomes the only American president to run and hide after a disaster, as he did on 9/11. I’ll never forget the nightly newscaster, after bringing the days events up to date, going to commercial with “And where is President Bush?”. Summed up the Traitor-In-Chief right then and there, for all time.

  12. dlet Says:

  75. missmolly Says:

Oliver would do better to wait on this project until there’s enough information to tell the entire story. Right now there are too many unanswered questions about what exactly has gone on during Bush’s White House years to be able to make a biopic with anything remotely resembling accuracy.

It would be like trying to make a biopic of Nixon in 1973.

People have turned my political ideas into a cliche, but that is superficial. I’m a dramatist who is interested in people, and I have empathy for Bush as a human being, much the same as I did for Castro, Nixon, Jim Morrison, Jim Garrison and Alexander the Great.”

  101. Technodaoist Says:

I’m no fan of Bush, but Oliver Stone is the LAST person I would go to for an accurate portrayal of anything. The man is a revisionist who never lets the truth get in the way of a good story.

“It will contain surprises for Bush supporters and his detractors.”

And why might that be? Because the events contained in the movie willbe FALSE. I’m sure there were plenty of people surprised by the fabrications he created in JFK.

Every statement in this article implies that the movie will be based on (if not derived wholly from) fact. Key word is IMPLIES. Stone is NOT a documentarian. He is a hollywood director intent on creating a successful movie. If you want a visceral gut reaction - he’s your man… if you want facts and truth - not so much.

  105. Jim Says:

It would take a truly great historical filmmaker to do a fair and accurate portrayal of Bush. I seriously doubt that Stone is the right guy to do it. And of course, if Stone’s portrayal is anything less than reverent, he’ll be subjected to the most vicious imaginable attacks from the right–and it’s hard for me to imagine that not affecting his decisions as a filmmaker.

    Comment by shaun — January 21, 2008 @ 12:23 pm

  108. Gregor Samsa Says:

I like some of Stone’s movies, but I have to say I think his work is a little, uhm, uneven.

I really enjoyed Born on the Fourth of July, Platoon, and Natural Born Killers, but am not so sure about Alexander, and even less about JFK. These two had great photography, great camera work, and good actors, but the plot left a lot to be desired.

JFK in particular, is little more than a very looong conspiracy theory. I absolutely expect Bush to be Alexander meets JFK. I will probably wait until it comes out on DVD.

When I think of Bush I will always remember that he was a warmonger.

    “Nothing can justify it, nothing.”‘

polls show the country is desperately aching to get past the “bush error”. what would make Stone think that anyone other than the 24% deadenders would go see a film on bush? He must be thinking there’s a large masochist community in the country?

  115. old_hack Says:

it better be better then that god awful twin towers movie.

  116. nanlichi Says:

Who will be cast in the supporting role of Jeffy Lube Gannon? And will we now know whether Bush is a pitcher or a catcher?

Why Stone? Oh yeah, Jane Goodall can’t do it.

I was actually thinking of using it as a beermat, but I guess a frisbee/DVD combo works well too! ;-)

  118. flex Says:

Why would i pay money to see the Bush Nightmare? I’ve been living the hellish nightmare for 7 long years…

“GEORGE BUSH IS A MALIGNANT NARCISSIST”

” Psychologically speaking, Mr. George W. Bush is what is called a ‘malignant narcissist.’ A narcissist is someone who has become hypnotized and entranced by their own inflated self-image. They have become so self-absorbed that not only are they not in genuine relation with others, but they relate to others (including the environment) as objects to satisfy their own need for self-aggrandizement. A ‘malignant’ narcissist, however, is a narcissist who reacts sadistically to others who don’t support and enable their narcissism. For example, instead of self-reflecting and taking in critical feedback, the Bush administration reacts with ruthless contempt for anyone who disagrees with them. Like a mean and cruel-spirited malignant narcissist, Bush and Co. deny the accusation and try to destroy the messenger. Ultimately, a malignant narcissist wants to annihilate anyone who in any way threatens their illusory self-image and self-serving agenda.”

“GWB–An AWOL coward WAR CRIMINAL. 70 Years of Bush Family TREASON”.

    Perfect.

  121. AmandaBlow Says:

Yeah now Oliver Stone is going to make the freak look good on the big screen. Alcoholic bum? Not just your regular alcoholic bum, this one was born to rich mommy and daddy never had to struggle the way your average alcoholic struggles in real life. Conversion to christianity? Yeah right!! The guy is a devil worshipper skulls and bones freak!! So many people have died because of this war criminal freak. He has ruined this great nation and tainted its reputation overseas with his criminal war. He has ruined the economy, destroyed families and the middle class. Not to mention his involvement in the attacks on 9/11!!! But Oliver is going to make him look good on the big screen. He’s got to make some money out of this! Got to hell Oliver Stone!

  122. Brain From Planet Arous Says:

“Here, I’m the referee, and I want a fair, true portrait of the man. How did Bush go from an alcoholic bum to the most powerful bum in the world?

  123. Brain From Planet Arous Says:

After Oliver Stone’s JFK and Wall Street, which I thought were very good, to compromised Nixon and WTC, he is obviously bought out and/or threatened. Whatever happened to his Panama Invasion story, which showed American troops melting people, killing 3000 innocents, and practicing weaponry for the upcoming Gulf War and subsequent Iraq-Afghanistan occupations? Stone is trying to please everyone, and you cannot when it comes to major events that have more anomalies and holes than Swiss cheese. He is major Chicken-Sheet now, attempting to put a clean face on Bush. Blahhhhhhhhh!!!

  124. justme Says:

I think even Stone is going to find it difficult to get this turkey financed. Somebody might want to clue him in that a legacy is the view from well after they leave office. Too soon, director boy.

  125. Bonnie Says:

Tell Oliver I won’t walk across the street to see it.

Especially if something thought provoking like American Idol is on and a vat of high fructose something or other might be available.

  128. Nat Says:

He should have said journey from alcoholic bum to alcoholic war criminal.

  129. RUCerious Says:

Here, I’m the referee, and I want a fair, true portrait of the man.

Be sure to call the false start on the Iraqi invasion, Unsportsmanlike conduct on the suspension of habeus, and of course a personal foul for each and every American and Iraqi killed for his ego.

  130. Buckie Boy Says:

Are they gonna show scenes like when he calls the DOD and has that Anthrax mailed to critical reporters, the guy that took pictures of the Bush twins drunk and members of Congress who did not like the Patriot Act?

Or maybe a scene where he gets told about 911 is going to happen in a month or so and he tells Cheney that their plan is about to be fulfilled?

How about when New Orleans is getting hit with a huge hurricane and he goes to a BBQ?

Or maybe the scene where he decides to invade Iraq without cause, that would be wild.

And there’s always the looting of the treasury, you could have him and Dick sitting in a pile of money wrestling and doing stunts in all the dough they’ve stolen.

Sounds very exciting- but not so much cause it’s true.

  131. JaneaneTheAcerbicGoblin Says:

First of all, it’s too damn early to do a film about Bush’s life. Geez, Oliver, let us enjoy being away from the bastard for a bit. I think the reason the Iraq films are tanking is because people are just sick of all this crap, and they don’t need to be reminded of it. Same will go with this Bush film. And Stone is probably not the best director to do this anyway, given his propensity to “make shit up”.

Ken Russell should do a film of Bush. He’s still alive. He’ll take liberties, but they’ll be much more interesting than the liberties Stone will take.

  132. Cats r Flyfishn Says:

Folks will go see this movie if the ending includes Bush and Cheney being taken away in handcuffs and orange jump suits to their torture chamber. Let the waterboarding begin.

  133. tokin librul Says:

I especially wanna see how they handle the “jam-a-cherry-bomb-up-a-frog’s-ass-light-it-and run away” part…
