Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney has released a new Spanish-language campaign ad in Florida entitled Mi Padre (My Father), featuring Romney’s son, Craig. Craig encourages voters to “get to know my father, Mitt Romney.” Romney himself then chimes in with: Soy Mitt Romney y apruebo este mensaje (I’m Mitt Romney and I approved this message). Watch it:
It’s interesting that Romney is so interested in reaching out to Latino voters in Spanish. In the past, he has been stridently English-only:
“English needs to be the language that is spoken in America. We cannot be a bilingual nation like Canada.” [3/07]
“You strengthen the American people by securing our borders and by insisting that the children who come legally to this land are taught in English.” [3/2/07]
In September, the Spanish-language television network Univision had to cancel a GOP presidential debate when only Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) agreed to attend.
But with the important Florida presidential primary — and its large number of Latino voters — approaching, the candidates are going all-out to pander for votes. Earlier this month, Giuliani also released a campaign ad en español on at least three Spanish-language television stations in Miami, despite his vocal support for English-only policies.
I would like to commend Mittens for his ability to speak both English and Spanish out of both corners of his mouth, simultaneously telling his Hispanic audience one thing, and his Anglo audience exactly the opposite.

January 21st, 2008 at 4:07 pmFrom Bob Edwards’s XM satellite radio show:
Presidential candidate Edwards “was talking to someone named Tom Miller, who has been to Cuba as a journalist. Miller was describing a visit where he was just sitting on a park bench talking to someone when a policeman came by and asked for their papers. After going to his police car and checking something, Miller was arrested and taken to some government building where he was questioned for a couple of hours. They asked if he had been handing out copies of a 1948 declaration on human rights. Apparently someone matching Miller’s description had been handing them out.
Miller said “I wasn’t mistreated per se, but it wasn’t a happy experience.” And Edwards says (may not be exact quote) “At least you were treated better than people over in Guantanamo.”
Does Edwards really mean to suggest that one ought to treat terrorists captured on the battlefield the same way as people sitting on a park bench, minding their own business–or for that matter than people who actually were doing what Miller was “suspected” of, namely handing out copies of human-rights literature.
In an age of heightened sensitivity over slurs involving race, religion, sexual orientation and so forth, why is anti-American bigotry considered socially acceptable?

January 21st, 2008 at 4:14 pmMitt Romney a Mexican-American?
188pxromney1 Marisa Treviño on the Huffington Post has an interesting piece about Mitt Romney’s criticism of so-called sanctuary cities. She sees it as inconsistent with his family history:
“It seems that Governor Bill Richardson isn’t the only presidential candidate with a Mexican-born parent. Republican candidate, Mitt Romney, can technically claim Latino heritage as well. His father, George Romney, was born in Colonia Dublán, Galeana, in the Mexican state of Chihuahua. . . . The elder Romney was born in a Mormon colony on Mexican soil that his parents had fled to, for lack of a better word — sanctuary. That’s why, it’s rather ironic that Mitt, being the son of a man whose family fled to Mexico for sanctuary reasons, would authorize a plan to slash funding for American cities that declare themselves to be immigration sanctuary cities.”
LOL
Romney’s grandfather (perhaps great grandfather) fled to Mexico to escape persecution in Utah for being a polygamist.
LOL
January 21st, 2008 at 4:14 pmGood point, Frosty Cupcake: since JT’s comment as a whole is a pile of stinking manure, we have every reason to doubt its attribution of this quote to Edwards, and every reason to demand proof.

One thing you have to keep in mind, JT, 86% of the detainees at Gitmo weren’t captured by US troops, and the majority of them don’t come from Iraq or Afghanistan.
On a side note, that story reminds me of a personal experience of my own. In 2004, when I first came home from Iraq, I had tremendous trouble sleeping. I would go out for long walks at night, just to clear my head. Just walking down the street in my own neighborhood, minding my own business. I was stopped three different times by local police, and threatened with being arrested once.

Because “English only” are code words from the mouths of Republicans pandering to their xenophobic base. Also, the attempt to make English the official language is a closet attempt to outlaw ballots printed in other languages, i.e. it is yet another Republican voter suppression tactic.
The economic incentive for immigrants to learn English is tremendous, and nothing else is needed, particularly not a declaration of English as our official language (we have no such declaration now).

fracaso de tirón

“pull failure.”
Yes indeedy.
January 21st, 2008 at 4:38 pmI see nothing wrong with Mitt or Rudy sucking in the Spanish speaking people as they doing nothing different then Senator Obama who thinks because of the color of his skin he has the black vote. As Karl Rove passed Religion and God who wanted George to be President and it worked. The people of Michigan believed Romney’s lie that would bring back the car industry he now knows you can tell Americans anything and they’ll believe it. At lease the World is seeing just how Americans just follow without thinking it just makes it easier for another country to take over as the Saudis are doing. It is good to see the Spanish immigrants are buying up homes as millions of Americans go in to foreclosure now who’s smart and who’s dumb. Senator Obama who only knows what he has read and he did benefit from the Civil Rights movement is talking the Clinton’s who lived and worked during that struggle he knows more. Yes his life was in Hawaii and overseas only to come back to the US and benefit from what Civil Rights Bill. Hillary got to met Dr. King but of course because she’s white that means nothing to the uneducated Americans as the Media does it spin. So Mitt, Rudy and Rev. Huck will do what ever it takes to get a vote and as Karl Rove proved Americans don’t think they follow it just might work. I look forward to the Republicans selling the lies to African Americans with enough money they would follow the lies to. Remember the GOP is funding the terrorist so anything can happen. Now the Saudis are smart to as they are buying up shares of the US banks. When they own the banks your car payment and mortgage payments will soon be going to the US/Saudi banks of America.

What I most definitely repulsed by, is the constant xenophobic, racist hatemongering from the right-wing when it comes to this issue. Their goal isn’t to help newcomers assimilate, but to segregate through language. That, I have a problem with.

Ooooo…I can! The likes of Romney wouldn’t have to look like an ass by demanding Mexicans speak English only to campaign to them in their native language.
January 21st, 2008 at 5:02 pmBy the way, I travel a lot to Europe and am embarrassed that I do not speak any language except for English and a little bit of Spanish. I attribute this to a terrible gap in our educational system (and some laziness on my part). My European colleagues are all fluent in English, and many are fluent in three languages. Americans should consider themselves damn lucky that other nations teach English so well in their schools. Because of this, it is very easy to travel and conduct business throughout much of the world knowing only English. I think we are better off as a multilingual society than a monolingual one. But a key element of the conservative/right wing authoritarian mentality is fear of anything unfamiliar.
January 21st, 2008 at 5:02 pmIs Romney the mormon word for flip flop?
January 21st, 2008 at 5:02 pmBy the way, the option of having multiple official languages is never on the table for the racist right-wing haters.
As long as Spanish is spoken by a wide sector of the population in the US, it should be considered as a potential co-official language with English. There is nothing wrong with that.
January 21st, 2008 at 5:03 pmWaitaminnit — didn’t Rudy do the same thing? That is, proclaim “English only” long and loud to appeal to the xenophobes and then produce Spanish language advertisements to shill himself to the Hispanic vote?

In the Netherlands, they understand that they aren’t the center of the entire universe. When I was in Amsterdam, it was rare to find somebody who couldn’t speak English with me. Only in the United States do we believe that if the rest of the world wants to talk to us, they should do it in our language — making us even more arrogant than the French.
Foreign language study is mandatory in many European countries, starting at an early age. Here, it’s rarely mandatory, and even as elective courses generally aren’t available until advanced grades. I studied both German and Swedish, but not long enough to become anything close to fluent, and in this country, I didn’t have enough opportunity to practice either of them sufficiently to become proficient (looking back, I realize I should have studied Spanish!).
Several countries have more than one official language (Canada, Switzerland, and Belgium come to mind). In these countries, signage and other written materials are usually in more than one language, and many citizens learn to speak at least some of a second language more easily as a result.
January 21st, 2008 at 5:19 pm#65 Also, SM, your comment is truly bizarre and illogical. How would declaring English the official language help with the road signs? How would it help with ESL students? It’s just a declaration. It doesn’t do anything to address either of the issues you raise.
January 21st, 2008 at 5:21 pmMost of my Spanish speaking students have had little difficulty being successful in class. They usually are bilingual or become so very quickly. Like my Asian students they also come from families which respect the educational process far more than their waspy classmates and their families. In fact it was my brother who as a soley English speaker who needed to learn Spanish to continue to be successful in his field as a large city high end chef.
January 21st, 2008 at 5:21 pmAll of our signs on interstates , state highways, and city roadways are in English. This causes dangerous driving conditions on our roadways when licensed and unlicensed use them. A huge safety hazard. Should we now spend billions of dollars to add signs in Spanish as well. Theres two, and there are many more.

I knew it would come down to money; there’s enough money to slaughter Iraqi children in their beds, but not enough for English-Spanish textbooks and signs.
See why I question your thought processes, SM? Because they don’t have any moral center. This argument exposes you as valuing money more than people. it is a bad way to live on a planet full of people. People were here long before money, and if money disappeared tomorrow, people would figure out how to do without it. the right wing is obsessed with money and stuff. Why?

January 21st, 2008 at 5:27 pmWell, the comparison is valid IMO. If you believe English only for U.S. citizens then you shouldn’t be speaking Spanish to get votes. Bush has killed more Americans than 9/11 did, and no amount of Arab attacks could roll back our civil rights as quickly and completely as the Repuke congress did. And money? Wrong, wrong, and wrong. proven by many other more advanced countries. Look at the way you spelled language, by the way. And what culture does a 225-year-old melting-pot have, anyway? This country was for 200 years the culture of immigrants. You have it entirely backwards. Who are the “we” you refer to? The Italians and Spanish and Vikings that “discovered” this land? The Native Americans who were slaughtered by the millions? The English settlers who had been tossed out on their asses and wound up here because they were losers? Who do you refer to? The African slaves? The Chinese railroad gangs? The Irish? the Pennsylvania Dutch? The only Americans there ever were are nearly gone, decimated in a genocide without equal in world history. And you think English should be the official language.
Wow.

Most hospitals already have spanish translators on staff.
I live here in Chicago and many of the local hospitals not only have Spanish translators, but Russian, Polish, and some form of Chinese.
Hell, even the Cook County Court (thats Chicago) has its website in multiple languages. Here’s simplified Chinese:

More ignorance. Doctor shortages are only local, typically in remote rural areas. The total number of doctors is determined by the AMA, which functions like a guild in that it deliberately limits its numbers to keep salaries high. The AMA controls the number of medical schools and limits how many students they can graduate each year. This practice should be outlawed.

See, SM, we are a result of all the ways that are here or have ever been here. There is no settled “way”, which seems to scare you. If the English-speaking portion of the population continues to offer the best options for immigrants, they will learn English; if not, then perhaps the English-speaking portion of the population needs to hand over the reins.
Incidentally, there is nothing in the Constitution to support your demands and yet we’ve managed to survive all these years as a nation. Why do you suppose that is?

Well, to nobody’s surprise, you’re wrong on everything here. Romney isn’t ever going to be president, he’s a crazy cultist without a clue. And many, many countries have been around much longer than the USA with several languages being the accepted norm. English will never be the official language, especially with a nitwit like George Bush slaughtering the language with the same gusto that he slaughters Iraqi children with. language is obviously no barrier to success in this country. And, nobody who wishes to become a citizen has to learn English in any more than a remedial, limited way, after which they can forget it, and go about the business of running for office in the GOP, where money does all the talking. You will never know the freedom of the truth, as “the truth shall set y8ou free”, words that will never apply to you as a coward and loser.

Those who do not, cannot become citizens.

Will you permit them to speak their native tongue in their own homes or do you have a Franco sort of thing going ala Basques deal going?

Imagine the beautiful patchwork of language and culture that covered this continent before the invading sea of illegal white immigrants invaded.

and they never have to speak it again. that’s clled freedom, bigfoot, a concept that scares you silly. but it’s OK, white men have already lost their faux superiority, and will continue to be diminished, as they deserve, after all their mass-murdering ways.

Or Turks and Kurds. We’d better set up dress standards as well. No more hairnets and none of those plaid shirts buttoned at the throat. And no more of those low riders cruising around. SUVs are good enough for white people, so they’re good enough for Chicanos. No more taquerias! Wonder Bread or nothing!
January 21st, 2008 at 7:13 pmBigfoot’s super power again. Why is it that bigfoot can’t have an opinion without claiming that “the vast majority of Americans†agree with him, and yet never does he provide any evidence.

I am not defending Big O here, but I do think it fair to point out that MANY posters here use their superpower of imagining how the “vast majority of Americans” would think if they only knew “the truth”. Bilbo is the classic example: He just KNOWS Kucinich would win the Presidency in a walk if only the meanie MSM would not put him in a corner. There is no evidence of this either, but it is often offered as proof by lots of Progs here.
January 21st, 2008 at 7:14 pmRHF, don’t attribute bigfoot wth skills he doesn’t possess. he’s no butcher, he’s merely a salesman, pawning off his rotten meat to the poor dumb shits that believe his lies. he’s never done an honest day’s work in his miserable, cowardly, bigotted life.
