Someone who truly believes that something is important or right continues to defend that position even when it's inconvenient. Someone who readily sacrifices what they believe for the sake of expediency only proves that they have no real principles, which basically means that the only thing they really believe in is self-interest. It might not be so bad if this were the only issue on which Romney has flip-flopped...but it's not. As much as I disliked Tancredo, I'll give him this much...he likewise is an opponent of a bilingual society, but at least he was prepared to stand up for his principles by refusing to participate in a bilingual debate. Did it cost him? You tell me...all I know for certain is that he's withdrawn from the race, but it's not impossible that a lack of success in gaining the Latino vote may have played at least some role in that decision.
