Bush embraces pro-lifers.

By Satyam Khanna on Jan 22nd, 2008 at 2:04 pm

Bush embraces pro-lifers.

This morning, on the 35th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, President Bush met with the participants in the March for Life, anti-choice group. The National Review’s K-Lo describes the scene:

On a cold morning in Washington today, the president got a warm reception by pro-lifers in the East Room of the White House. The crowd — which included the organizers of the official March for Life — expressed their gratitude in what seemed like an endless sea of applause, breaking up the president’s speech, which continued as he worked the room.

The president said that “in a civilized society, the strong protect the weak.” He talked about the unborn as not only being lives that deserve protection, but beings with “souls.” The president said that “America is better than this” — meaning legal abortion. … The president’s receptive audience was grateful — no doubt a gratitude that was intensified by the prospect of a less-welcoming administration to come.

    I’m sorry…

Did he just say that in a civilized society the strong protect the weak?

Umm…did anyone else’s head just explode?

You know, except when he doesn’t feel like protecting the weak. Screw you, SCHIP kids.

  5. RUCerious says:

With protection like this the weak will be lucky to last a week.

  6. Proud American Liberal says:

DON’T call them “pro-lifer”. They support war and torture. They support economic repression and wage slavery, which is ANTI-FAMILY. They must be called ANTI-CHOICE.

  7. RUCerious says:

The ultimate in protecting the unborn will involve removing them from the mother’s womb to protect them. Warehouse them until they mature, then send them off to war.

  8. fletc3her says:

I get pretty sick and tired of these people trying to make health decisions for me. I do not recognize the right for these complete strangers to sit in the examination room with me and my doctor and decide what medical procedures are going to be allowed. The choice to begin or end a pregnancy is one of the most profound medical decisions one can make.

The president said that “in a civilized society, the strong protect the weak.”

He added, “Just kidding, New Orleans.”

  13. Buckie Boy says:

Well, not so much pro-life when it comes to killing hundreds of thousands of Iraqis it seems, and thousands of our own soldiers, and it’s ok to let New Orleans drown also.

    Sick phucks, all of them.

And it’s alright for them to mail anthrax to their critics, and congress critters who disapprove of the patriate act, oh and the one sent to the photographer that posted the drunk Bush twins.

  16. Red Pill says:

More “social conservative” bullshit to mobilize the sheeple to reach for their wallets and to hasten to the ballot box. The Republicans are–and will remain–all talk and no action on this question; it’s far too useful politically. How will they be able to whip the base into a frothing fury if they can’t rail against abortion? It’s the single most reliable polemical and, I’d wager, fundraising device the GOP has.

Wake up, conservatives!! YOU’VE BEEN HAD!!!

I hate how these idiots have claimed the phrase “pro-life”

For the 35th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the staff of our Health and Reproductive Rights program here at the National Women’s Law Center decided to reflect on their personal feelings about choice and what it means to them. 21. Mary Poplins says:

If Bush is against abortion than why did his girlfriend have abortion?

    He is a hypocrite.

  22. nanlichi says:

To those that really are anti-choice, and there are many who feel strongly about it, why do you think the Republicans are a better choice for you than the Democrats? Because they say so????

You are being manipulated by the Repugniscums, nothing more. It’s more of a perversion to manipulate you through your belief system into thinking that the R’s are your party than to be truthful with you and disagree with your position. Ask yourselves what Bush and the Boyz did for you in the last 7 years, even before the patina wore off, when they had control of all three branches, did they try to push for abortion bans?

If you want to change Roe vs Wade, you need to pitch your case to the people and convince the other 70% that you are right.

In the meantime, open your eyes and realize you are being manipulated.

  23. Klem Kiddilehopper says:

I wonder if any of them asked Bush when was he was going to let the fetus have it’s own Social Security Number, starting from right after doing the dirty deed?
I’ll bet the room was full of adopted Snowflakes, but no Chocolateflakes! After the drool-fest was over, The East Room probably smelled like stale cheap perfume, rot-gut gin, roll your own cigarettes, a two day-old Depends !

I don’t know anyone who’s “for” abortion. For that matter, I don’t know anyone who’s “for” chemotherapy or radical mastectomy or any other medical procedure.

What I and most other liberals I know are “for” is for the government to stay out of people’s private medical decisions. We support a woman’s right to make informed decisions about her own reproductive health – both before and during pregnancy.

It’s not “pro-choice” versus “pro-life.” It’s “pro-rights” versus “anti-rights.” We’ve been letting the conservatives carry the “pro-life” term for too long – I think we need to adopt it for ourselves.

  30. DenverOasis says:

“in a civilized society, the strong protect the weak.”

so why do republicans want to eliminate all of our social safety nets? why are they letting the middle class fall further and further into debt? why would they let people lose their homes from inability to medical bills? why did they rewrite bankruptcy law to really screw people who have lost everything?

republicans protect the rich, and christian extremists, and that’s about it.

  31. jb says:

    but beings with “souls.”

How would he know anything about souls? The whole world wishes Babs would have had an abortion.

  32. dim wit says:

The president said that “in a civilized society, the strong protect the weak.”

and the strong also give tax cuts to each other and then invade sovereign countries based on lies.

When Clinton left office, he was a highly-sought-after public speaker all over the world, and still is.

When Bush’s term is over, he’ll get six months of pity-engagements, and even then, he’ll be little more than a glorified Walmart greeter.

Republicans, stand in awe over the power you once wielded, and who you choose to represent it. And then try not to kill yourselves.

    But…you know…don’t try TOO hard…

The irony is that the Republicans are the one who are supposed to be for smaller government, with less government intrusion in people’s lives.

Then again, maybe its not irony, but rather hypocrisy.

It’s just politics. The economy is bad, so the conservatives have to pull out their tried-and-true non-issues. They’ve already beat the immigration issue to death, so now they’re dusting off the abortion plank. I’m sure that if the stock market continues to drop, they’ll whip out the flag-burning amendment and gay marriage, too.

  42. Leftside Annie says:

Yeah. God forbid a woman should have an abortion and destroy a clump of cells — but torture is just peachy with Dear Leader.

    Good grief.

  43. billyjoejimbob says:

These people call themselves pro-life but everything they do and say is the opposite. Shameful!

I believe there is another biblical passage (not sure where) that says the soul enters a male fetus at 3 months and a female fetus at 6 months. Hmmmmmmm… go figure.

  49. Gregor Samsa says:

In a civilised world, the strong don’t make up phony excuses in order to attack, invade, let alone occupy the weak.
