Matthews: ‘Giuliani hasn’t been beaten yet.’

On this evening’s Hardball, Chris Matthews made this incredulous and puzzling statement:

Some people think [the Republican presidential race] has come down to McCain, Romney, and — just because Giuliani hasn’t been beaten yet — Giuliani.

Watch it:

[flv http://video.thinkprogress.org/2008/01/chrd.320.240.flv]

Note to Chris: Giuliani has not only been beaten, he’s been crushed. To recap: Giuliani finished fifth in Iowa with 4 percent, fourth in New Hampshire with 9 percent, sixth in Michigan with 3 percent, sixth in Nevada with 4 percent and sixth in South Carolina with 2 percent.

UPDATE: Tim Grieve has more.

Rudy has ruined the brand for Warmongering Authoritarian Candidates. Looks bad for the GOP (Grand Old Perverts)

  6. Willy says:

Oh wow, I’m just like Giuliani since I haven’t been beaten yet either. Does this mean I might become president?

  7. thirdparty says:

OK, you nailed him on being imprecise. But let’s face it, everyone knows Giuliani has been putting his money on Florida since it became clear in late 2007 that he wasn’t going to compete in the early states. Just look at all the news stories that talk about the late-state strategy. I’m not sure why TP wastes its time on silly non-stories like this.

Does anyone remember the “Debate” team in high school? There were competitions amongst regional schools and topics ranged from political to social to historical. I swear the debaters at the ages of 16-18 would whip this Chris Mathews like a rented mule. I have been fortunate enough to have only ever seen this guy on The Daily Show. How any one can take him seriously?

  28. Exley says:

#7 Thirdparty is correct. It is rather obvious for anyone who has followed the primaries that Matthews is saying that Giuiliani “has not been beaten” in a state in which he has focused and campaigned. Giuliani’s strategy — questionable as it may be — was to focus all his early efforts on Florida; hopefully win there, and then win delegate-rich primaries in the Northeast.

Giuliani did not focus or allocate resources in Iowa, NH, SC or Michigan. He was not beaten in those states. He was not even playing.

Pay attention. The link above is a clip where Matthews makes the statement that Giuliani has not yet been beaten. I didn’t hear him utter the same about Kucinich. I haven’t heard anyone say that. Have you? If so post a link so we can read it. What you’re saying is that you assume that readers here, or TP, feels that Kucinich still has support. That’s a far cry from stating that he’s still capable of winning. Surely you see the difference. I don’t doubt that Ghouliani has supporters, just not enough so far to be considered a contender. So your comments re: Kucinich are irrelevant to the discussion of Matthews. You get it?

  63. Joefriday says:

    Comment by darladoon — January 22, 2008 @ 9:41 pm
Reality says that Hillary, Obama, McCain and Romney are not beaten and that Edwards and Huckabee both have an outside chance. All others have been beaten. This says nothing bad about those that have lost-they just never gained traction.

    What is your point anyway?

  64. darladoon says:

That’s a far cry from stating that he’s still capable of winning.

matthews made no such claim; he said, “hasn’t been beaten.” and the TP staff immediately knee-jerked and stomped all over matthews claim.

so i ask, if you’re willing to stomp matthews’s fair, and substantiated, claim, then are you willing to stomp all over my claim that kucinich “hasn’t been beaten?”

  70. jb says:

Kucinich ran in spite of the media labeling him unelectable. Rudy ran because the media, like Matthews, thought he was electable.

Not sure what you’re going for here. Of course I’d be willing to say that IMO Kucinich has been beaten. He hasn’t a chance. He’s hanging on so he can attempt to formulate policy for the others and to get some face time. But he surely has been beaten.

Matthews isn’t necessarily saying that Giuliani will win but by saying he hasn’t been beaten of course he’s saying he has a chance to win. What else could he mean? Anyone who hasn’t been beaten has a chance to win don’t they? Otherwise what’s the point of the distinction of “being beaten”? You do understand the concept of winning & losing don’t you?

I seriously doubt that Tweety gives a damn about any of the nonsense that he spews. He’s merely doing the dirty work for his corporate paymasters who have important business to be performed at the FCC deregulating media ownership regulations. As a corporation, they have a vested interest in the political fortunes of the Republican party and its pro-corporate, anti-worker, anti-public commons, deregulatory ideology. Olbermann is a fluke who became too successful for MSNBC to shut down. Tweety is their PR spin machine. Clearly, Ghooliani has a deal with the Corporate Media to pursue their interests by appointing corporate lackeys like Kevin Martin to the FCC. If Democrats win the presidential elections in ‘08 it would mean a rough ride for deregulating our highly valuable public property, the broadcast spectrum, and turning it over wholesale to corporate interests.

Sort of like the way are we were wrong about woman’s rights, education, the environment, healthcare, immigration, gay marriage, and going to the moon?

Rudy is well behind Ron Paul, and he gets no party support and lots of skepticism from the old established types.

    #111, Plunger,

And Podhoretz, a well known Zionist Neocon with big lust for wars against Moslems and Arabs, who is calling for another bloody world war is now the chief foreign policy adviser and the brain of Mr. Giuliani.

It is sad that Wall Street allow themselves to be prostituted by a war monger like Podhoretz ; allowing him to write in their journal.

  111. For Truth says:

    Disclaimer: Joining this discussion late.
Could it be — and I hesitate giving Mr. Matthews the benefit of the doubt — but could it be he meant that we’ll have to see the results of Rudy’s stratergee before burying the body?

I think I”d kinda like Rudy stickin’ around for the final Jeopardy round:

    “Alex, what is 9/11?”

  112. tarazan says:

    #133…..For..Truth,

You mean you like Giuliani to be ‘Tested’, as he always claims.
But if Rudy loses all his marbles on Florida gamble, then he can add
    -Tested…but Failed..-

  113. araratararat says:

For well over a year Mathews has had wet dreams of groveling at Rudy’s fascist feet and licking the dog poop and dust off of Rudy’s shoes. Mathews likely entertained the thought of being Rudy’s press secretary during Mr. 9/11’s – more corrupt than bu$h’s admin. The connections, the power, the wealth – it is so intoxicating.

  114. foolme1ns says:

And here we all are talking about Chris Matthews again. Hasn’t anyone figured out that this is exactly why he does this shit? The more his face appears on these blogs the more he benefits from it.

Give it a rest. Who cares what Matthews says. He is a deliberate buffoon. And it is working for him.

Try getting over your Zooey fixation, Alpo
Your stalking behavior is fairly pathetic.

So, why is zoo such a threat to you tiny manhood anyway?

  117. celtic cynic says:

Interesting note in the New York Times yesterday regarding the “character” of Rudy Giuliani. He really is an arrogant, selfish, bullying little person. The transparency is really being noticed and reported in the news. Even NPR had a nice piece on him.

    Comment by For Truth — January 23, 2008 @ 7:06 am

Exactly. The Matthews comment was simply saying “some people” aren’t counting Giuliani out of the race because he hasn’t been beaten in a state in which he has had a major presence. Seriously, there are enough real reasons to criticize Matthews without inventing them. ;)

  119. Zimzone says:

Rudy is corporate America’s pick; no doubt about that. He’s already joined at the hip with NormPod, the Neocon King Turd, and would bomb Iran quicker than he can say 9/11.

Does he have enough money to buy the election? Florida will be a good litmus test. He’s been whoring himself to Repuke Floridians for two months now, and spent several million dollars doing it.

IMHO, Rudy is more dangerous than Bush, and smarter. If you think Bush wired America to listen in, you better be on guard for Rudy. He’ll make J. Edgar Hoover look like a girl scout.

  120. nofltwlt says:

Only Diebold can save Giuliani now. Maybe he isn’t dropping out because he knows that votes will be his way that were actually cast for other candidates.

  121. darladoon says:

To be able to debate, you must be able to focus. Your constant off-topic whine about Kucinich demonstrates you are not here to debate but to obfuscate.

surely this person must be joking. my argument is wholly relevant to the topic, as well as to the broader function of this website.

i didn’t see you make this point at those arguing over spiderman and aquaman. somehow kucinich is less relevant?

  122. darladoon says:

you’re just upset that someone is actually CHALLENGING the ideology of TP and TP followers.

  123. Zimzone says:

Wasn’t one adulterous, divorced President (Reagan), enough?

  124. Michael Lafferty says:

    darladoon:

    Please pay attention here.

Chris Matthews has advanced the idea that Mayor Giuliani remains a viable candidate “…just because Giuliani hasn’t been beaten yet.” This claim is demonstrably false. As noted, Giuliani has been repeatedly ‘crushed’ where his name appeared on a ballot or was offered up as a caucus candidate.

Chris Matthews has made NO equivalent claim whatsoever regarding the viability of Representative Kucinich.

You cannot reasonably introduce a comparative narrative regarding these two candidates and not expect to be slapped silly. You’re illogical and irrelevant attempt to divert attention from the slothful, shoddy and deeply biased observations attributed to Chris Matthews is, on its face, ridiculous.

Where were you when they offered that introductory logic class, anyway?

Are you this dense naturally or do you have to work at it?

For a careful explanation of the issue (for the umpteenth time), see Michael Lafferty’s post @ 11:26
