Last June, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) noted “hate radio” had hijacked the political discourse on immigration with “xenophobic, anti-immigrant” rhetoric. That same month, then-Sen. Trent Lott said, “Talk radio is ruining America.” An advisor to Mike Huckabee piled on late last year, stating “Rush [Limbaugh] doesn’t think for himself. That’s not necessarily a slap because he’s not paid to be a thinker–he’s an entertainer.”
While right-wing talkers like Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Michael Savage, and Melanie Morgan continue to spew inflammatory rhetoric to incite their base, there are increasing signs that their influence in the conservative movement is temporarily evaporating. Conservative radio host Michael Medved — who got his start guest-hosting Limbaugh’s show — wrote this recently:
The big loser in South Carolina was, in fact, talk radio: a medium that has unmistakably collapsed in terms of impact, influence and credibility because of its hysterical and one-dimensional involvement in the GOP nomination fight.
For more than a month, the leading conservative talkers in the country have broadcast identical messages in an effort to demonize Mike Huckabee and John McCain. If you’ve tuned in at all to Rush, Sean, Savage, Glenn Beck, Laura Ingraham, Mark Levin, Hugh Hewitt, Dennis Prager, and two dozen others you’ve heard a consistent drum beat of hostility toward Mac and Huck. […]
In other words, the talk radio jihad against Mac and Huck hasn’t destroyed or even visibly damaged those candidates. But it has damaged, and may help destroy, talk radio.
Medved’s observation can be witnessed in Limbaugh’s recent discourse about the leading Republican presidential candidates. Yesterday, Limbaugh said, “I can see possibly not supporting a Republican nominee,” adding that “it’s gonna come down to which guy do we dislike the least. And that’s not necessarily good.”
After hearing Limbaugh recently denounce the candidates as “not true conservatives,” Tom Brokaw said, “It’ s one of the few times I’ve ever heard…Rush Limbaugh kind of temporarily at a loss for words.”
UPDATE: Andrew Sullivan notes this photo on Limbaugh’s site as evidence of the “internecine war” going on among some right-wingers:

They are NOT going to like this.. Troll-A-Palooza is a comin’
January 22nd, 2008 at 11:28 amThis is shocking! Shocking I tell you! Tom Brokaw listens to Rush limbaugh? Oh the horror! Why Tom, Why!!!!!!!
January 22nd, 2008 at 11:33 amAlthough I would love to see “hate” radio (Rush, Hannity, Limbaugh, and their ilk) die a horrible death, I don’t believe it will happen, or that it will even mutate into something a little bit less hateful. There is too much money available to those that spew hate, ignorance and fear from those that buy hate, ignorance and fear.
January 22nd, 2008 at 11:34 amAs much as I’d like to believe that right-wing talk radio has “damaged, and may even (be) destroy(ed)” by itself, I have to consider the source. And Medved is no font of wisdom, either.
So for the time being, I’ll just sit back and enjoy the fireworks.
(Oh, and — cue trolls braying about ratings in 3… 2… 1…)

Medved should be more specific. It has damaged, and may help destroy, deceptive, hateful, psychotic, right-wing propaganda, talk radio.
Air America and independent talk radio shows, such as Ed Schultz and Stephanie Miller are doing just fine, thank you.

January 22nd, 2008 at 11:42 amRepublicans played victim
Talk radio helped
Republicans gained power (briefly)
And they exposed themselves (again).
Thank god it only took 8 years.
The road to recovery does not involve Rush or the Republican party.
They asked us to beat them on their record and that is what is happening this very moment.
January 22nd, 2008 at 11:42 amLOL, true enough Wayne.
But the really die-hard talk radio listeners are different than the average 80 year old in Iowa that “stays informed” by watching Fox News.
And what they get on right wing radio is far more intense than what even Fox broadcasts.
And by the way, Wayne - you’re a great American.

January 22nd, 2008 at 11:44 amIt will be interesting to see who’s left after the neocons all get done eating their own.
January 22nd, 2008 at 11:44 amThey’re suffering because they LIE. Many people eventually catch on. For example, my father is a big Republican. He listens to Sean Hannity every day. Hannity has been going on and on about how the economy is just great, and that the evil liberal media just created a false notion that the economy is slowing. Well, people eventually see the market crashes, see Bush on TV saying we need a stimulus package, etc.
My father now realizes Hannity was LYING about the economy.
Another example is the Iraq War. How many of these pundits went on and on about WMD’s in Iraq, only to have the government prove none existed when we invaded. People eventually find out the truth. These pundits can only “move the goal posts” so many times.
As GW Bush once said, “Fool me once….uh….shame on….uhhhh you….fool me twice…uhhhhh…….”
January 22nd, 2008 at 11:47 amdon’t be fooled by this new neocon attempt at attrition.
they are criminals….bring them to justice. this infectious disease will continue to fester behind the scenes and launch a new attack on democracy later.
these are the same criminals running around since nixon and reagan.
January 22nd, 2008 at 11:50 amThe typical right-wing “hate radio” audience is, IMHO, going a bit underground.
They haven’t stopped hating, nor will they ever. Amongst the diehard loyalists of the GOP, the Evangelicals, the Righteous Right, there’s been no Ebenezer Scrooge-esque epiphany that they’ve been wrong all along. But it’s quite obvious to everyone but the deliberately obtuse that the current state of politics has hurt the agenda of the right. They continue to listen to the Limbannities on the air to get their rage-on - at the very least those hosts make sense when pointing out the failures and faults on the left, right? RIGHT? - but when it comes to determining who they should vote for as President, they’re just as disgusted by the water-carrying of the Limbannities as we are, and the proof is in the primaries.
January 22nd, 2008 at 11:50 amYesterday, Limbaugh said, “I can see possibly not supporting a Republican nominee,†adding that “it’s gonna come down to which guy do we dislike the least. And that’s not necessarily good.â€
Buy a Clue Limbaugh, you can always vote for yourself, the only qualified candidate in your teeny tiny brain.
January 22nd, 2008 at 11:53 amBrian: “My father now realizes Hannity was LYING about the economy.”
- - LYING doesn’t seem to be the right term to me. Lying implies a willful and deliberate twisting of the truth.
January 22nd, 2008 at 11:54 amIn the case of people like Hannity and his ilk, it’s more like DELUSIONAL. They have an altered sense of reality and exist within a finite bubble of their own thoughts and ideas and never dare stray outside that bubble.
Besides, LYING also means they know the truth but choose to manipulate. I don’t think thses guys are that bright.
Why does Limbaugh Hate Willy Kristol?
January 22nd, 2008 at 11:56 amI was driving last night and wound up surfing the AM dial. Landed on WABC in NYC. Some twit named Jerry Agar was filling in for the fossilized remains of Bob Grant. Naturally this Republican fluffer was denying that there’s any problem with the economy. His evidence? They are still having the Super Bowl with all the trimmings.
I spent a little time listening to the preceding program hosted by Mark Levin. I can only describe his show as pure propaganda.

January 22nd, 2008 at 12:01 pmBadmoodman, I think you are wrong here, lying is the correct term. Manipulating the truth is Faux News’ mainstay. Do you think they are delusional when they tie 9/11 to Sadam or lying? Does Hannity really think that Iraq had WMD, or is he lying.
I think it’s a willfull manipulation of the facts, or to put it bluntly, they are fcking lying.
January 22nd, 2008 at 12:02 pmHave the conservative radio hosts out done their welcome with the neocons? All used up! What will be the next hate media outlet?
Television is the next dead media. They already bought up the newspaper outlets then radio. Dead media allows them to reach older more conservative viewers plus it’s a cheap write off. This is why Ruppert Murdoch continues to expand.

January 22nd, 2008 at 12:11 pmI guess Michael Medved is a bigger story than Sibel Edmonds.
Think Ostrich loses credibility by the day.
Selling Nuclear secrets to our “enemies” is less important than what Medved has to say about talk radio, according to this website.
Plus, new revelations in the Sibel Edmonds story show that Valerie Plame/Brewster Jennings was outed years prior to Scooter Libby.
But you wouldn’t know any of that if you rely on TP for your political news.
I hope you all cash your paychecks without a mirror present.
The FBI has been accused of covering up a file detailing government dealings with a network stealing nuclear secrets

Flit Romney is the Bushbot in this campaign. Even though Dubya hasn’t publicly endorsed Mutt, Jeb is working for him, and he is backed by the same MIC corporatists who brought us Reagan, Bush Sr. and Shrub.

January 22nd, 2008 at 12:48 pmThe problem is, they have only one good target: libruls.
Their ausience loves to hear how awful, dishonest, and anti-American libruls are, how they’re for the terrorists and love Islam and are for free rides for lazy blacks and the armies of Aztlan. They go on and o and their audience lsps it up.
But they fall apart when they start trying to police their own. Attacking other Republicans, saying that they’re not’real’ conservatives? Picking a candidate out of an unappyrogues gallery and attacking those who support someone else?
The base doesn’t want to hear that. They just want to hear more racist, xenophobic, jingo talk against liberals.
The truth is that rw rralk radio can only lead them where they want to go. Thinking that they have any real power is a mistake–as they’re finding out.
They’ll listen to Pat Robertson, but they won’t buy his energy drink.
January 22nd, 2008 at 12:48 pmI think the “bully Rethugs” still remember when Bush handed McCain his balls back during those debates. He looked like mincemeat and the chest-thumping bravado-ridden GOP can’t tolerate the fact that McCain looked like a whimp - simple as that I think.
January 22nd, 2008 at 12:49 pmIt’s about time someone realized that “conservative” talk radio is nothing for than propaganda for the Republican rightwing extremists who hate all that are not like them. It is hate speech at its purest form and has only served to divide a country into camps. The Germans and Russians used propaganda to divide the world after WWII and it lasted for decades. It also ended up costing the United States Trillions of dollars in spending and thousands of dead soldiers. The big question is whether Americans will really wake up and realize they are being brainwashed by these idiots or not. If they do then it will be like the Berlin wall coming down all over again.
If so called “conservatives” continue this hateful effort, it may destroy America as we know it. This hateful speech doesn’t strenght us at all, because you have these fools like Ann Coulter making stupid statement against fellow American base on hate and idealogy. What wise man or women would think that preaching hate is helpful during a time when the country is engaged in a life and death struggle with terrorists who intend to destroy our country? Yet Limpbuagh, Hannity, Ingram, Coultergist and the other idiots do all they can to divide us. As President Lincoln stated, “A house divided can not stand”, or words to that effect. Even in his day Lincoln knew that Americans had to stand together if if was to become a truly great nation.
Yet these hate mongers who claims to love America, but clearly can’t stand Americans who aren’t like them, contine to destory all that our thousand of dead soldier have fought so bravely and died for. They and all who think like them should leave America is they are so unhapply with living here. If they founded a country it would be 100 percent white and filed with hate, be militaristic, and wouldn’t last 10 years. Not such country could build a lasting legacy and exist based on pure hate alone. To all those who think like Limbaugh, Hannity, Coulter I say to you; “Fall down and your knees and pray that God doesn’t strike you down, because you will never ever see heaven. Satan has prepared a place for you in his kingdom and he is waiting for your souls.”
January 22nd, 2008 at 12:49 pmpbg: So that means that the GOP “base” at this point is a group of total misanthropes? Guess so.
January 22nd, 2008 at 12:50 pmShadow: “hate speech” was the tool of the Third Reich and it’s being used in this country right now. These white supremacist skinheads will get their due - sooner than later.

Simple. McCain committed the cardinal sin amongst today’s Republican Party. He didn’t always do exactly 100% of everything Bush told him to do. Even though most Republicans keep their mouths shut these days, because even they finally realize they can no longer defend the heinous policies, treason, and other crimes of George W. Bush, they still (and always will) nurture a deep and bitter hatred of any fellow Republican who had the temerity over the past seven long years to dissent in the slightest from the from the Word of the Almighty Lord Bush.
This will never change.
January 22nd, 2008 at 12:55 pmRU: That’s because Bush’s Reich (PNAC, Federalists, AIPAC) firmly believe that they are smarter than our Founding Fathers. They have an unfounded, overblown, and pathogical impression of their own intelligence. In a nutshell: They’re all very psychologically sick people - just like Hitler.
January 22nd, 2008 at 12:55 pmShoeless: What I observed over time with McCain is that his level of personal equivocation is legion. I see him as suffering from “small man syndrome” (Napoleon complex) and “old man syndrome” (erectus disfunctionalis). This is the genesis of his continuous vascillation - he waxes and wanes - puts up that false sense of bravado and resistance and then bends over and allows his fellow Repugs to hose him.
The one thing he is consistent about is the need for this war, the progress of this war, and the continuation of this war which is precisely why the GOP does not want him as their “candidate”.
McCain’s solid war mongering position runs contrary to the wishes of the majority of americans. McCain’s war stance is what is tanking him with Independents and his inability to show leadership skills (ala Hitlerean brand) consistently tanks him with his own group of wingnuts.
January 22nd, 2008 at 12:59 pmIn a nutshell, the GOP knows that McCain is unelectable due to his war posture - just like whoremaster Rudy.
January 22nd, 2008 at 1:01 pmAnd, the rapidly declining GOP “base” cannot tolerate someone as unpredictable as McCain. They are firmly “with us or ‘agin us” mentality.
January 22nd, 2008 at 1:01 pmRU: Any one of us here who had the american superiority inculcated from grade school on up can relate to how these neo-fascists think. They’ve just taken it a few steps farther. Their “circle jerk” think tanks provide for no outside input - therefore, no insight whatsoever. It’s like the choir singing to the choir. The fervor grows exponentially each time they pat themselves on the back and affirm the propagandist incantations. If you live in a shack in the woods, chances are that you need to believe that everyone else does too - otherwise, there would be far too many choices and options out there from which to reason.

I agree. He and Arlen Spector behave similarly in this regard. Most Republicans hate Spector for the same reason. Even though both men usually retreat quickly from their initial stands of integrity, the fact that they occasionally make a false show of resistance to the decrees of the Sacred Bushgod is enough to earn them everlasting enmity from the majority of “good Republicans”, who blindly accept the commands from on High.

Another good point, but while the Right loathes him for this he gets little to no credit from the Left for being his own man. He is a Hawk, so I guess that aspect of his politics blots out everything else. He takes fire from both sides, which is probably why he does so well with independents.

Another good point, but while the Right loathes him for this he gets little to no credit from the Left for being his own man. He is a Hawk, so I guess that aspect of his politics blots out everything else. He takes fire from both sides, which is probably why he does so well with independents.

January 22nd, 2008 at 1:26 pmA “man” does not allow a Karl Rove to smear a family member ; especially not the youngest who also happens to be female.
And certainly doesn’t end up hugging the nitwit that allowed the above to occur.
McLame is a useless old jackass…………

Indeed. That’s how [not “why”] they hated Clinton too. Remember “Danny Williams”? Different day, same ol’ sh*te. Your Republican Party at work….

Good Kreist! Not mine, hooey!
January 22nd, 2008 at 1:33 pmWell we Democrats have something in common with Republicans this time. In head to head polls McCain beats both Clinton and Obama, he’s the only candidate that does. And Edwards is the only candidate that beats McCain. The they are reluctant to nominate McCain and obviously we’re not going to nominate Edwards. Both sides must be trying to lose.

January 22nd, 2008 at 2:02 pmRush and the other lying sacks of stench have soiled themselves just the way Bush and his administration have soiled themselves. They have no credibility because of their off-the-wall commentary.

Should he have pulled a Zell Miller and challenged Rove to a duel?

Really strange, isn’t it? But everthing about this cycle has been strange. And the actual election is a long way off, anything can still happen.

Did he ever publically demand an apology or hold Turd Blossom and/or Chimpy responsible ?
Nope
He went and hugged the retarded simian douchebag.
McLame is a stupid wrinkled old chump.
January 22nd, 2008 at 2:49 pmBTW Keltoi
I would have smashed pansy Rove’s empty head in , and then kicked Chimpy’s retarded simian ass all the way back to Crawford if that was my family they stupidly tried to smear………
McLame is no “hero” ; he’s a survivor , I’ll give him credit for that.

McCain spent years in Hanoi learning to survive by acquiescing to evil torturers. I shouldn’t blame him. I’m sure he gave in to Bush and Co. because he discovered that he was once again in the presence of evil torturers.
January 22nd, 2008 at 3:04 pmMcCain sold his soul - his child, his wife and his self-respect for POWER. Plain and simple, a Faustian bargain that will eventually haul him down to meet his master in Hell.

Republicans think there is nothing wrong with the horrible smears used by Bush and Co. in 2000 and 2004. They just snicker privately, and publicly act like nothing happened.

Bush worshippers cannot even conceive of defending their families against any horrible trespass by Bush or his evil minions. These groveling sycophants are authoritarians. This is a mental illness caused by overbearing and/or violent parents. To them, Bush is the ultimate authority figure, so it is unacceptable to question any heinous act by Bush or any loathsome creature Bush has empowered to carry out his sinister agenda. Thus, actions which are abhorred by civilized societies, such as slander, torture, wiretapping, rendition, treason, suspension of habeas corpus, war for profit, all become just the tools necessary for their Chosen One to reach his goals.
January 22nd, 2008 at 4:04 pmHate Radio Is The ‘Big Loser’
I’d like to add to that list anyone who listens to hate radio, anybody who believes the rubbish that is spewed through it, and anyone who comes to ThinkProgress to repeat the same garbage about them “Islamofascists” and “libruls”.
January 23rd, 2008 at 12:00 amHate radio isn’t the problem! It’s the listeners that wish to believe any rhetoric that comes down the pike that worries me. Remember, radio is about selling air time, sometimes at any cost! http://battlesoftim.com/btrep.htm
