Progressives nominated for ‘Best Documentary’ Oscar.
The nominees for the 80th Academy Awards were announced this morning and the nominees in the “Best Documentary Feature” category are almost all progressive films, including ThinkProgress favorites SiCKO, No End In Sight and Taxi To The Dark Side. And the nominees are:
“No End in Sight” (Magnolia Pictures) A Representational Pictures Production: Charles Ferguson and Audrey Marrs
“Operation Homecoming: Writing the Wartime Experience” (The Documentary Group) A Documentary Group Production: Richard E. Robbins
“Sicko” (Lionsgate and The Weinstein Company) A Dog Eat Dog Films Production: Michael Moore and Meghan O’Hara
“Taxi to the Dark Side” (THINKFilm) An X-Ray Production: Alex Gibney and Eva Orner
“War/Dance” (THINKFilm) A Shine Global and Fine Films Production: Andrea Nix Fine and Sean Fine
Though the winners will be announced on Feb. 24, nominees may not show up to accept them because many are expected to honor the picket lines of the striking Writers Guild of America.

Interestingly, these “liberal flops” are all about conservative flops – the Iraq War, the Afghanistan War, the flawed health care system, and the breakdown of U.S. Constitutional values.
I guess we should be thanking you guys – if it weren’t for you, there’d be nothing to make documentaries about!

I don’t blame ThinkProgress for this. I think it’s just a symptom of the overall media blackout on debate on the Israeli occupation and U.S. foreign policy re: Israel. It’s not discussed in The New York Times and on CNN, it’s not discussed on the campaign trail, it’s not discussed in Congress. We need to do a better job of getting it in the overall public agenda, that’s all.

I don’t agree – all that property damage from those Qassam firecrackers gets plenty of coverage in the mainstream media. What we don’t see are the collective punishment conditions that cause Palestinians to retaliate.
