Look up G HW Bush on wikipedia. His mother is Barb Bush nee Pierce (Click on Barb Bush). Her father was somebody Pierce who was a publishing magnate. etc. You can follow it back to Pierce the failure as president (Although my opinion is that the wikipedia article goes real easy on Pierce – a president so bad that his own party wouldn’t re-nominate him).

while I totally agree that Shrub is a disaster of biblical proportions, I have to point out that one of his ancestors was also president (Pierce, not Bush I). And if memory serves me right, that ancestor was the only sitting president to NOT get his party’s nomination for a second term.

Whichever of them win the “worst prez ever”, the prize will be kept in the family.

No, Verbal, it wasn’t sarcasm. You’re right, it’s a pretty sound collection of major indicators, as I said.

But there are inevitably ways of looking at the data that wouldn’t be as damning. I don’t think it could ever be shaped to make things look good (at least not honestly) but, for instance, you could state the growth of exports (assuming that exports have grown). This wouldn’t be as valid as demonstrating the widening of the trade deficit (as this chart does) but it would be a fact-based way of making the Bush years look not as sucky.

I just wondered also about the choice of countries used to demonstrate our loss of standing in the world. Are the four chosen, the nations with the biggest shift in opinion? Or are they representative? I don’t know, and part of the game of this kind of stat compilation is to build as strong an argument as possible.

They succeeded. This is a pretty strong argument.
