On his radio show yesterday, Fox News host John Gibson responded to ThinkProgress’ criticism of his comments mocking the death of Heath Ledger, saying that it was just “a little Brokeback Mountain joke” and there is “no point in passing up a good joke.”
Without offering any sort of apology, Gibson defended his callous comments by claiming that “for months and months and months,” his show has consistently made fun of the line, “I wish I knew how to quit you” from Brokeback Mountain. “I’m not giving that up,” exclaimed Gibson:
GIBSON: How many months did we live off that line, Brokeback Mountain?
BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN CLIP: I wish I knew how to quit you.
ANGRY RICH: Several.
GIBSON: I mean, it was going on for months and months and months.
BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN CLIP: Wooee, yeah!
GIBSON: I’m not giving that up.
Listen to it:
On MSNBC’s Morning Joe this morning, host Joe Scarborough described the homophobic undertones of Gibson’s “little Brokeback Mountain joke,” calling it “mean-spirited and hateful” that “if you make a movie about being gay, your death becomes a punchline.”
When Gibson’s sidekick, Angry Rich, read him a negative comment left by a ThinkProgress reader (which the site does not endorse) calling the Fox News host “a closet homosexual,” Gibson responded by laughing and quipping “well, I’m still breathing”:
ANGRY RICH: You’re “a closet homosexual.” That’s the first one.
GIBSON: Oh, I am?
ANGRY RICH: Apparently.
GIBSON: Ha ha ha, well I’m still breathing. There’s the difference right there.
Don’t let Gibson “get away” with his “callous and harsh” remarks. Contact Fox News and John Gibson. Or give his radio show a call at 1-866-868-6861.
UPDATE: GLAAD has started a petition asking Fox News “why they continue to provide a platform for John Gibson’s cruel and tasteless comments.”
UPDATE II: Perez Hilton identifies a list of Fox News’ current advertisers.
UPDATE III: Media Matters has more from later in yesterday’s radio show.
Transcript:
JOHN GIBSON: There is a war on Gibson. And, eventhough Gibson’s always right, there is a war.ANNOUNCER: The war against Gibson continues.
GIBSON: Thought we were gonna do that next hour, but just to give you a heads up about it, I did this, an hour yesterday on Heath Ledger on my TV show because he was like, still warm. I got an e-mail Angry Rich just moments ago…
ANGRY RICH: Yeah.
GIBSON: From somebody who said that I was just a horrible lowlife, awful person for mocking the death..da da da da da da…News!
ANGRY RICH: John, the start of yesterday’s show is now prominently featured on ThinkProgress, the George Soros operation, yes.
GIBSON: What did…
ANGRY RICH: It says, “John Gibson Mocks ‘Weirdo’ Heath Ledger’s Death.”
GIBSON: Did I mock him?
ANGRY RICH: “He Found Out How To Quit You.” Quote-unquote.
GIBSON: Oh, that. Ha ha ha, well…
ANGRY RICH: A little satire.
GIBSON: Yeah, it’s a little Brokeback Mountain joke.
ANGRY RICH: We feel bad about it, c’mon.
GIBSON: Yeah, I mean, I feel bad about his death, but that’s…
ANGRY RICH: Horrible.
GIBSON: No point.
BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN CLIP: I wish I knew how to quit you.
GIBSON: That’s no point in passing up a good joke. I mean, how many months did we live off that line, Brokeback Mountain?
BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN CLIP: I wish I knew how to quit you.
ANGRY RICH: Several.
GIBSON: I mean, it was going on for months and months and months.
BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN CLIP: Wooee, yeah!
GIBSON: I’m not giving that up.
ANGRY RICH: “The comments are unfortunate.”
GIBSON: Oh are they? They’re going after me over it?
ANGRY RICH: Oh yeah.
GIBSON: Mmmk, well, it’s the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, but…
ANGRY RICH: You’re “a closet homosexual.” That’s the first one.
GIBSON: Oh, I am?
ANGRY RICH: Apparently.
GIBSON: Ha ha ha, well I’m still breathing. There’s the difference right there.
ANGRY RICH: I guess.
GIBSON: Christine, it took you so long to get that? I mean, I was like counting the seconds there.
ANGRY RICH: “Gibson will be whining tomorrow that his words were taken out of context.”
GIBSON: No, I meant them, whatever they were. I don’t remember what they were, but whatever they were, I meant them.
Think of all the jokes that will be told when John Gibson is dead.
January 24th, 2008 at 3:51 pmWhat goes around comes around, John.
"JOHN GIBSON: There is a war on Gibson. And, eventhough Gibson’s always right, there is a war."
What a huge ego powering a small mind.
January 24th, 2008 at 3:52 pmThe day will come when Gibson has health problems, marital problems, caught tapping his toe in the john, suggesting vibrator sex with an employee, getting his housekeeper to buy him drugs illegally or he'll just die. I'd say that will be funny too, but it's just as fun to watch a sad pathetic man try & lift his useless career by demeaning others.
January 24th, 2008 at 3:53 pmSUGGESTION: Let's start seeing interviews and quotes from progressives on TP instead of idiots. Like Thom Hartmann? Like Barbara Lee? Like Russ Feingold? Like Barbara Boxer?

January 24th, 2008 at 3:54 pmOf course! Why didn't we see this earlier?!
It was all a part of the War on Gibsonâ„¢!
I guess that makes it okay. Well, that and the claim that Gibby "feels bad about his death". Nyuck nyuck.

I pick the "Not to be" option for John. Of course, he'll never debate with himself on "whether 'tis nobler", only what gets him attention and money.
January 24th, 2008 at 3:57 pmJohn, John, John --- when you're in a hole, quit digging!
January 24th, 2008 at 3:58 pmI can "pass up" a bad joke, though. And that would be ... John Gibson (and FauxSnooze).

I wouldn't mind a little good news once in awhile, either. A little article about some positive contribution made by a progressive. Of course, if I wasn't so lazy I'd write it myself and offer it as a post. I guess I'm not the only slacker here.
January 24th, 2008 at 4:05 pmYou, sir, are an idiot. Anyone that would allow you to be a host on their radio is a bad businessman.
January 24th, 2008 at 4:08 pmActually the difference is that Heath Ledger wasn't a homosexual, he just played one in a movie. Much like Gibson isn't a human being, he just plays one on the tv/radio, and not very well. I hope he sees the similarity between his words & those of Fred Phelps. That's good company he keeps.

So, gibby is happy that an actor who played a gay cowboy is dead because he happen to play a gay cowboy. Brilliant. Gibson and Phelps should hang out.

every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main
if a clod be washed away by the sea,

any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind

According to the reich-wing, everything not on Faux or AM hate radio is a Soros operation.
January 24th, 2008 at 4:10 pmHey John Gibson: This is the first time I've ever heard of you, and I can tell you that you haven't made any new fans with your idiotic remarks about Heath Ledger. He was an excellent actor whose untimely death is tragic. He is sorely missed already. What is wrong with people like you? I am offended at your remarks. Go f@ck yourself with a cactus, stat. I hope you are fired from your "job."
January 24th, 2008 at 4:12 pm"Think Progress?" The only progress I'm thinking about is that Fox should fire your ass.
January 24th, 2008 at 4:13 pmIsn't it horrible to hate yourself so much that you transfer that emnity to other people just because they're different (or in a real stretch, because they play a movie character who's different)....
January 24th, 2008 at 4:14 pmGibson is human garbage
January 24th, 2008 at 4:14 pmWhat do Naomi Watts, Michelle Williams, an Olsen twin, and several other beautiful and talented women have in common?? They never dated nor went out with a certain Fox blabbing mouth. Perhaps John boy is just really jealous of the rugged individualism of a celebrity who could attract and arouse legions of male and female citizens of the world. His jokes are his own pathetic attempt to desperately climb upon even the tiniest of pedestals (something about that word that perhaps Mr Gibson would find funny in his own sick and perverted way).
January 24th, 2008 at 4:16 pmjust wait until Pat Robertson or Huckabee comes out with something stupid like:

January 24th, 2008 at 4:19 pm"Soros operation"= we got nothing of substance to say.
January 24th, 2008 at 4:21 pmGibson is a flaming idiot in the same class of trash as Bill O'Reilly, Ann Coulter, Glen Beck, Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh and others who say all things absurd so as to generate controversy and keep themselves and their minions employed.

Hi, John Gibson!
While I've got you here, let me ask you: Were you born with the innate ability to be a complete homophobic and insensitive ass, or did you have to work really hard at it?
January 24th, 2008 at 4:22 pmalright, I'm bored and clearly all of the decent trolls have been chased away. so for the sake of argument, I will take the opposing view:
1) Free Speech. Gibson can say whatever he likes
2) I wouldn't pass up a good joke, either
3) Gays are funny. Have you seen "The Birdcage" or "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" Simply put, gay stereotypes make for good comedy.

January 24th, 2008 at 4:35 pmThese guys at Fox playing the 'perfect',..the 'complete'.
So they can mock anybody who disagrees with them...and that's their job all day.
They feel superior, and they will not change or listen due to this.
They in my opinion are arrogant,racist..who think they are on a mission to change people who disagree with them, and they have the right to insult people too who disagree with them.
So talking to Gibson who thinks always he is right, just like O'Reilly and the whole gang in Fox will not change anything. The best thing is put them on ignore...and don't watch Fox network...
Gibson will being playing the victim by tonight; he'll claim he was taken our of context and that libruls hate free speech. Expect fellow reich-wing loons like Hannity and O'Racist to come to his defense.

January 24th, 2008 at 4:41 pmJohn Gibson is a radical extremist who literally advocates domestic terrorist attacks HERE and calls for the death of Americans. He should be jailed as a terrorist sympathizer and for making terrorist threats.
If another terror attack does happen, John Gibson, his producers, FoxNews, and the advertisers on his show should be held FULLY liable and personally responsible. They should be tried in criminal court (or military tribunal) and/or sued in civil court.

January 24th, 2008 at 4:43 pmDoes Gibson lambast the CA gov for being a cyborg from the future? Does he buy the pain reliever that the actor who plays a doctor on TV recommends? Does he believe all terrorist plots are foiled just like on '24'? Does Gibson realize that something being on a screen doesn't mean that it's real and in fact, if so t probably mean that it is fiction? Maybe someone should let him know, else he may make of fool of himself.

Gibson was making the joke regarding the gay character. If you consider the context of the joke, he was really joking about Ledger's character and not Ledger himself.

Hate is sometimes justified. I hated the actions of Hitler. And GWB. They used their power to cause the deaths of hundreds of thousands. What was it that Heath Ledger did that justifies mocking him after he's dead? Oh right, he played a homosexual in a movie. You're right, it's totally the same.
January 24th, 2008 at 5:07 pmI pray that Mann Coulter lives a long life and continues to appear regularly on the reich-wing MSM. "Her" very hateful existence just continues to prove how reich-wingers are out of touch with reality and that they condone hate.
January 24th, 2008 at 5:09 pmI think also there is a difference between celebrating someone's death and making jokes in what amounted to a comedy routine about it.
And no, it would not be a nice thing to see people make jokes about a conservative's death but at the same time I will not sit here and be lectured by any conservative about what constitutes civility and right or wrong. Please.

Comment by Dr. Matt — January 24, 2008 @ 5:19 pm
Actually, yes I did:
BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN CLIP: I wish I knew how to quit you.
ANGRY RICH: Several.
GIBSON: I mean, it was going on for months and months and months.
BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN CLIP: Wooee, yeah!
GIBSON: I’m not giving that up.
You'll notice the phrase "Brokeback Mountain Clip" and not the phrase "Heath Ledger"
January 24th, 2008 at 5:23 pmLook at the transcript. The transcript doesn’t use Ledger personal voice, but rather uses his character from the movie.

Ledger's character didn't just die. Surely you get the difference.
January 24th, 2008 at 5:24 pmPlease refer to comments made by Air America's talk show host Lionel in regard to Steve Irwin's death. All the liberals' crying that this is typical of conservatives should reevaluate. This Lionel character said something just as horrific after Irwin's death on a liberal talk show. Gibson's remarks do not reflect the attitudes and opinions of all conservatives, so people need to stop suggesting that.

We have every right to call out the tasteless and classless commentary that passes for right-wing punditry these days. It's our duty to point out the illogic and the hateful undercurrents that poison our public discourse.
Free Speech comes with responsibility. Too many talking bobbleheads act like they bear no responsibility for what they say or how it's perceived.
January 24th, 2008 at 5:27 pmGibson was making the joke regarding the gay character. If you consider the context of the joke, he was really joking about Ledger’s character and not Ledger himself.
Look at the transcript. The transcript doesn’t use Ledger personal voice, but rather uses his character from the movie.

Yeah, I did look at the transcript. Did you? What was gibby implying by this:
ANGRY RICH: You’re “a closet homosexual.†That’s the first one.
GIBSON: Oh, I am?
ANGRY RICH: Apparently.
GIBSON: Ha ha ha, well I’m still breathing. There’s the difference right there.

January 24th, 2008 at 5:27 pmFuture News:
January 24th, 2008 at 5:28 pm"John Gibson, talk-jock at a small midwest radio station and a former FOX personality was severely injured today. Apparently, his mass of hair, hardened and heavy-ladened by six cans of hairspray found nearby, caused him to loose balance and break through a glass table which then caused the candle on the table to catch his hair on fire and exploding. The explosion took out the entire second floor of the rented studio apartment he shared with a co-worker who had recently been kicked out of his apartment for hosting Tupperware parties."
Once again I ask - Lionel!?!
Do you REALLY think there are that many Lionel fans here? Are you confusing TP with AARP?

January 24th, 2008 at 5:31 pmTopeka's Westboro Baptist church says it intends to protest Heath Ledger's memorial service because he played a gay character in "Brokeback Mountain."
In a news release from the church, Shirley Phelps-Roper says that she and other members will picket Ledger's memorial services in the United States, not those held in his native Australia.
"You cannot live in defiance of God," she said. "He got on that big screen with a big, fat message: God is a liar and it's OK to be gay."
January 24th, 2008 at 5:31 pmIt's funny how one of YOUR Fox morons does this and your response here is to try to get us to defend Lionel and Howard Stern.
It reminds me of the movie Enemy Mine in which the human character tells the alien he worships Mickey Mouse and the alien spends the rest of the movie trashing the human's "God".

Let me get this straight... are you defending what Gibson said because some idiot on Air America said something equally cruel & stupid? Does that justify it? Cus if it does then the bar is set really really low. You can always find an idiot that did something as dumb as you're about to do. If the thread was about Lionel & that statement I'd be equally disgusted. Funny thing is, you would be as well. But since this is a Republican you can cut him a break while accusing me of doing that about someone I'd never heard of saying something I never heard him say. So your accusation of hypocrisy is more applicable to you since you're familiar with both instances.
January 24th, 2008 at 5:36 pmAnd Gibson is no O'Reilly, Coulter, Hannity, or Beck.

Who cares where you would rank Gibson? And who cares if you think they reflect the conservatives? Gibson represents Fox and Fox represents conservative values. He speaks for you whether you like it or not. And if you didn't like the way he was representing you you'd join in a thread like this by calling him out. But you're not. You're saying it's not that bad compared to something someone on Air America said about someone that died over a year ago. That's called being an apologetic. You're just diverting attention from the bullshit. Therefore the representation of you & your type seems fitting to me. Of course you disagree. So what? Live with it. You've earned it.
btw, I'm not sure if saying that he's not in the same league as O'Reilly et all is a good thing or not. I'd hate to be in that league. Are you saying they're somehow better or higher up then Gibson?

Everything I have said is on-topic. Plus, I've made a very valid argument for free speech and I've never once said you can't make any of your arguments. So you disagree with my posts - because I make an argument based on the 1st Amendment - the Constituion - and now I'm on the right wing.

Pot meet Kettle, I think you two will get along well.
January 24th, 2008 at 6:03 pmA closed minded reader would see it that way, I guess. I was saying it in defense of Republicans. The whole right wing is being attacked because of one man's comments. I brought up the Lionel comment as an example of the hypocrisy. How can a person attack an entire segment of people for one man's words when someone from the other segment of the people said something just as horrific? I understand if you think that Gibson's comments were horrific, because they were. But that does not put you on a valid platform to accuse and attack all conservatives.
And how is attacking other conservative voices in the media not "changing the subject?" This is supposedly a thread about Gibson, and people want to jump all over the "reich-wingers" for changing the subject. Ironically, your bashing other conservative people in the media is just as culpable.

I work in media for a living, and except for the occasional mention of what stupid thing he's said lately on this or that Web site I never even hear the name John Gibson. He does make Don Imus look like William F. Buckley, though.
There will always be untalented broadcasters who go out of their way to offend and shock, because that's all they have and all they are. The sooner this guy Gibson returns to obscurity and private life, the better for all of us.

It's true that some have drawn the comparison to a wider pattern among the right-wing's favorite talking heads, but, hey, that's what we as beings capable of abstract thought do -- we look for patterns in our environment.
So.. you DO think that a tasteless comment made over a year after the death of a public figure is just as offensive as one made the next day, before any details are known?

I take your point, I just think that we end up doing more harm than good. For instance, Anne Coulter puts on a wig and some lipstick and crawls out of Karl Rove's anus every few months and says some hugely offensive shit, everyone gets pissed, and hey! Whaddaya know? She's got a book coming out. Shocking. And just like that, she's on the NYT bestsellers list for 3 months. If every cable news network stopped bringing her on and just said "yeah, she's cunt who should die from AIDS", she'd be done. Its formulaic. We MAKE the echo chamber for them.

Agreed. But I hardly think our response has any impact on that dynamic.
It's not as if the media actually cares what we think in the first place, and they book AC because... well, I don't now why they book her, frankly. But they do. And it's not because we give her publicity.
January 24th, 2008 at 6:26 pmI am beginning to feel the only way we can fix John Gibson's unconscionable remarks is by having him experience a similar fate.

If you want to talk about people being hateful then HEY look at your guy John Gibson. He not only mocks a guy's death, he also calls for more terrorist attacks on Americans. You must be soo mad that you're spamming his advertisers with your rage, right?

Who on here said that Gibson didn't have a right to say stupid and hateful things to their audience?
You see, since I suspect you're a typical authoritarian right-winger, you probably assume that any transgressions of public decency and taste should be punished by imprisonment. That's the only way to explain how you confused TPers' calls for Gibson to suffer the consequences of his stupidity with some sort of censorship issue.
Or maybe you're just seeking to muddy the waters.
Or maybe you're just not all that smart and you really DO think this is a Free Speech issue.

That said, I feel nothing over the death of merceneries. They aren't in Iraq because of orders, or because they are there trying to help the people make Iraq a better place. They are there to wage war for profit. Screw them.
You're right, he did say "Screw them." Of course, he didn't mock their deaths or their personal character, did he? No, he in effect said, they weren't there serving their country, they were there serving their employer.
Harsh? Sure.
Is it in any way comparable to what Gibson said? Only in that harsh words were spoken about the dead. The differences are that Gibson laughed, Kos didn't. Gibson mocked, Kos didn't. Heath Ledger was a beloved actor, the mercenaries were paid killers. Kos justified his remarks with clear-eyed, sober analysis of the situation in Iraq. Gibson justified his by saying "there's no point in passing up a good joke".
Other than that, yeah, they're exactly the same.

January 24th, 2008 at 7:38 pmRaleigh, NC -- The families of four American security contractors who were burned, beaten, dragged through the streets of Fallujah and their decapitated bodies hung from a bridge over the Euphrates River on March 31, 2004, are reaching out to the American public to help protect themselves against the very company their loved ones were serving when killed, Blackwater Security Consulting. After Blackwater lost a series of appeals all the away to the U.S. Supreme Court, Blackwater has now changed its tactics and is suing the dead men's estates for $10 million to silence the families and keep them out of court.

I see you suffer from the standard right-wing misunderstanding of the definition of "fact".
See, "Kos is a hater" is your opinion.
"You guys still love him" is also an opinion, and one not even backed up with any evidence, seeing as your commenting on ThinkProgress. Unless you HAVE evidence that anyone here at TP "loves" Kos?
Fact: Liberal hypocrisy is the best kind.

Word, joe. Word.
January 24th, 2008 at 7:49 pmLet me offer an anecdote that might shed some light for Brian York on how inadequate his "Kos Did It Tooâ„¢" defense is:
maybe ten years ago, there was a bank robbery in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles. the bank robbers were armed to the teeth with assault weapons and kevlar body armor, and they were content to shoot it out with the LAPD in the streets. One of the criminals was shot and lay in the middle of the street, and he was crying out for help from the cops. The problem was, not all of the robbers were accounted for, and the cops couldn't risk exposing themselves to the kind of massive firepower they'd already experienced.
They guy bled to death in the street.
His family sued the LAPD for letting him bleed to death.
I had no sympathy for the guy, and little sympathy for the family. He put himself in that position and helped create the conditions that made his rescue too risky to be attempted.
Now, the Blackwater guys in Iraq were not criminals, but their deaths were a whole lot closer in spirit and theory to the LA bank robbers' than they were to Heath Ledger's. They put themselves in that position and helped create the conditions that led to their unfortunate fate.
Did Kos laugh at them? Did he use their deaths as a punchline?
No.

January 24th, 2008 at 8:06 pmThis thread has gotten so off topic. While I was away, having a life, the discussion derailed, terribly. Gibson said something terrible; he apologized for saying what he did. I am aware that this does not wipe his slate clean, and he shouldn't have said it in the first place. Unfortunately, this thread has dwindled into a mudslinging fight, tossing childish names back and forth at one another, trying to get personal digs in. Most of the comments are not justifying what he did, and those that draw comparisons with left wing talking heads are just to create some perspective. At some point, individuals from both sides of the party line have said things, in public, that shouldn't have been said and that were horribly offensive. One person's opinion, whether it comes from someone in the mass media or not, does not reflect the opinions of all those who share his party beliefs.
And FYI-one of the earlier posts referred to me as someone's boyfriend (amidst the mudslinging). I am a girl, thanks!

No, Gibson didn't exactly apologize "for saying what he did". He apologized "that some took (his) comments as anti-gay and insensitive".
There's a difference. One that Gibson counts on you not to notice.
As for the rest of your sermonizing, I suggest you re-read some of Brian York's posts and consider again whether his only purpose was "just to create some perspective". I think that description is too kind.

I didn't suggest that it was a one sided degradation; it said it went back and forth. And as for the "having a life comment"- I just can't believe that someone could go back and forth with meaningless banter for so long. I'm not trying to argue anymore; it will be to no avail. As I suggested to Brian York, please note to whom you are responding when you post cryptic comments like this.
January 24th, 2008 at 8:57 pmDearest John Gibson,
January 24th, 2008 at 9:04 pmWho are you? What gives you the right to judge a person for thinking about death? As though that's a sin...
If you were to tell anyone that you NEVER thought of death at the age 28, no one would believe you. Heath Ledger thought about it after a roll that Jack Nicholson warned him about, a roll that would easily inspire thoughts of death in anyone. But it wasn't as though he went out and chased it.
People get judged by their clothing, their hair, the way they act... but someone's state of mind is simply THEIRS. No wonder people are afraid to speak out; it's people like you who make others ashamed speaking their mind for fear of judgment. You remind me of being in high school.
"TMZ is right about everything" ??? How daft.
I'm sure you've inspired the thought of death in a lot of people now; likely, your death.
I don't understand why Kos would have had to pull his remarks, if he did. mercenaries understand fully the risks they take, and they got what they were looking for. Simple as that.
January 24th, 2008 at 9:05 pmMaybe I was wrong to say "having a life" (implying y'all didn't). It is entertaining, this banter; unfortunately, it's back to name calling. I'm done now-y'all have a nice evening.

(clap clap clap)
...but I still don't know who she was responding to wth her charge of "wrong use of (her) quotation marks". If it was me, I'll fix it:
Oh, and thanks for at least acknowledging that what Gibson offered was not a full out "apology".

Professor: Who's John Gibson?
Student: He used to be on Fox News.
Professor: What news?
Student: Fox.
Professor: Never heard of it. What was his name? Gibson?
Student: Yeah, don't you know who he was? He was this crazy right wing nut and he took his laptop in to get it fixed once and they found all this gay porn on the hard drive and the media found out about it and Gibson said it was all planted there by President Obama and then he shot himself in the head on live TV? January 25th, 2008 at 12:51 amJust a thought for anyone who has friends or relatives down in Australia.
As distatseful as it is to repeat this worms idea of a joke, I encourage you to send word of his comments down there. The intent is to try and get the Aussies wound up at FOX as well. If it becomes a scandal down there, then there's a chance it could rise to the level of a diplomatic "incident".
You see, FOX doesn't give a sh*t about what progressive-minded Americans think about them. They long ago quit even pretending to be anything other than an unapologetic organ of the far-right misinformation, noise machine. Reporting consists of little more than WH talking points, with any real news subject to spin or reframing. There's virtually nothing an American can say or do that will move FOX from that position.
But should the citizens of a country. one that also happens to be a strong supporter of Bush/Cheney and their "War On Terror", begin to write letters to their political leaders, it's entirely possible that Gibson wouldn't last another week.
We've already seen how ruthlessly they'll go after anyone who threatens or delays WH plans to build a FOB (Forward Operating Base) by their outing of a CIA counter-terrorist officer, Valerie Plame. So to see one of the hundreds of 'useful idiots' like Gibson fired if it will at all help to mend relations with another conservative ally in the WOT....that wouldn't give them even a moment's hesitation.
I realize there's a long ways between sending emails and fomenting widespread outrage down there, but it's time progressives started using tactics other than merely pointing out how bizarre wingnuts actually are. We're sitting back and assuming that any group as hopelessly insane as they are must also be a group that will self-destruct. But say what you will about them, they are far better at organizing dirty tricks to manipulate the media. Time we started to fight fire with fire.

Think of all the jokes that will be told when John Gibson is dead.
What goes around comes around, John.
RaginGurrl, I think the punishment is better than you suggested. When John Gibson leaves this planet, you will be able to hear crickets like never before. The silence regarding him will be deafening.
January 25th, 2008 at 5:59 pmYou have no right to go and bad mouth Heath Ledger and his great talent as a star you could only wish you had 1% of that talent and heart that man had. And for one you didn't even know him as a person and for you to play those clips is something a middle schooler would do it just goes to show how low you have to go too make the world no you exist in the 1st place because I sure didn't know you tell now. And you and everyone else knows how they always make a Stars death out to be the cause of drugs. So how about you wait for the real truth to be told and even if that's the reason then that's still none of your business their are some people in this world that have problems they do have a hard time dealing with and know one has the right to bad mouth or judge them for it. It just shows how ignorant and heartless you an the Fox network for standing behind you really are as people . So me and my whole family at this point will no longer watch the Fox network until they fire you.
January 25th, 2008 at 7:06 pmHopefully everyone that has commented will read my comment as i was so disgusted i joined just so i could post JOHN GIBSONS EMAIL ADDRESS-
john.gibson@foxnews.com
so we can all complain to him now. what a worthless piece of sh*t, it is absolutley none of his business and even if he was into drugs it doesn't mean his death should be mocked in the slightest.
Many great musicians and actors have died as a result of drugs, purposely or not and no-one deserves to be treated that way.
i wonder what people will say when you die john?
i have just got back from being in australia for 3 months as i have family there and the towns have such a close-knit community i'm sure they are all missing Heath terribly. I have never met him but always admired his films and talent, he was very dignified not getting caught up in all the press by keeping his life private. Thats what his family should be able to mourn in private. i don't know why but i cry sometimes, people won't leave him be and his daughter probably doesn't understand yet. he will be missed and has millions of fans who support and love him.
i hope when you are laid to rest in Perth Heath, that it will be quiet and peaceful for you.
we love you xxxxxxxxx
