Gibson: ‘To anyone offended by my comments, I’m sorry.’»

On his Fox News show today, John Gibson apologized for his recent comments mocking the death of actor Heath Ledger. “I’m sorry that some took my comments as anti-gay and insensitive,” said Gibson. “Once again, to anyone offended by my comments, I’m sorry.” Watch it:

We appreciate Gibson’s apology and kindly suggest that he refrain from making disparaging, “anti-gay” comments in the future.

UPDATE: Gibson said the same apology on his radio show this evening, though before mentioning that his comments were “anti-gay and insensitive,” he added the words “some gay groups.”

A reich-winger apologizing? Is today “opposite day”? Next thing you know herr dubyah will complete a grammatically correct sentence!

Looks like someone got taken to Rupert’s woodshed.
These Fox pricks don’t apologize for anything unless their job/wallet is in jeopardy.
A coward, who was steadfastly defending himself 4 hours ago.

  4. tnrc75 Says:

Again, that’s not an apology…when people use the word “if” in their statements. Yes, people were offended…..this is not debatable….it’s as if to say-if you were one of the crazies who took offense….I’m sorry. All the Hair, uh, man, should have said was I’m sorry…..if he meant it.

Yeah, I should have listened to his rant before posting. He didn’t apologize for his insensitive, vile, and hateful remarks….he’s sorry some people took offense to his insensitive, vile, and hateful remarks…..big difference!

  6. j swift Says:

I suspect he is really sorry that his “joke” got his dumb ass into trouble and not really sorry that he said it in the first place.

  7. ralph the wonder llama Says:

#4 — right on. It’s a conditional apology at best, one that places responsibility for the offense of the offended rather than himself.

But then, I think this was predicted yesterday on TP.

respect? he didn’t say he was sorry for what he said…he’s sorry some ppl may have been offended or misconstrued what his comments…what a jack ass. someone fire the moron…

  12. Veritas Says:

This is hardly an apology. The heat has been ratcheted up so high that he knows that if he doesn’t want to find himself on the unemployment lines anytime soon, he’d better apologize. It falls only on reichwingnut ears though. Nobody else with half a brain cares about anything this two-bit sycophant has to say.

Gibson epitomizes the judgmental, bigoted, insensitive “ugly republican”.

  19. zol Says:

I did read the thread. I know for a close minded inbred nut job like Gibson to say sorry was probably the hardest thing he’s ever done since trying to get out of his mothers womb.

  27. Veritas Says:

Just like everything else in Bush’s world of doublespeak and lies. Think about the brain screw here: “Patriot” Act - when it has everything to do with all things illegal, unconstitutional, and unpatriotic.

Homeland Security: When our borders have been wide open for 7 years, the balls to call it “security”. It is the precise opposite.

And the list goes on…..Bush and RoveReich, his favorite “Lapdancer” (er….when Jeffy Lube wasn’t around, that is)….concocted these bastardizations of our dictionary over a few brewskies. Someday our successors will be ROTFLTAO to see how badly and how totally we’d been duped by a bunch of sick jokers posing as government.

Just say KATRINA and it pretty much sums it up!~

  28. Veritas Says:

There will come a day when one of these jokers begins to pull some doublespeak on the people and they will be immediately whisked off and put in prison. It will happen.

  29. Veritas Says:

  32. xtro Says:

I am sick and tired of these people who just run their mouths and foam off like rabid jackals and then apologize when they are called on their comments.

It’s one thing to do something once but when they keep on doing it it’s because they either refuse to get it or they don’t know how to engage their brain before their mouth in gear.

  34. joe cantwell Says:

Gibson: ‘To anyone offended by my comments, I’m sorry.’

    i like it.

compare and contrast to what he said this morning. it’s like his mommy made him say he was sorry. and that’s fine with me. let it be a lesson to others. this is what happens when you stop acting like a man.

  35. Dave C Says:

“I’m sorry that some took my comments as anti-gay and insensitive”

I am willing to bet the farm that the apology was not voluntary. I would guess that it was an edict from above saying “If you want to keep this gig, you will apologize”. It was very apparent by his diatribe the second day that Gibson isn’t the least bit sorry for what he said.

Under the setup where he works at they don’t even see the article or title, so they actually don’t know what the thread is about. I’m trying to get my head around this comment: is it supposed to mean that because SOME of the posters here have left rude or classless comments, then NO ONE who comments here can claim any moral advantage over John Gibson?

Or is it supposed to mean that anonymous or pseudonymous posters on a blog have at least as much responsibility for what they type in a comment thread as a nationally-syndicated radio host who also is a regular on a national “news” network has for what he says over the public airwaves?

Say what you will about her, but her son’s death was every bit as tragic and deserving of respect as any other. Let’s just say I’m watching Fox News a lot less now.

Hey Gibson, if you’re going to make crude jokes about gay people, why don’t you start with your on-air co-workers at Fox? Or would that be too…awkward. You don’t have the balls, you old creep.

  106. tahlia Says:

good god, if that apology was sencere, then i must be losing my touch!! That apology was about as sincere as my shit in the toilet this morning. And just because he made a lame ass’d apology, who here bets he’ll still be on the air tomorrow, or the next day or the next. Its called morals, and i dont think he has any. Im an australian, and i admit ive never heard of his show or him for that fact, but i tell u what, i dont care who you are, you cant be disrespectful to ANYONE who has died, celebrity or not. FOX seriously need to rethink who they have representing them

  107. Sabyen91 Says:

tahlia, your shit in the toilet this morning was a whole lot more sincere than that apology.

  108. andy phx Says:

“I’m sorry that some took my comments as anti-gay and insensitive,”

That’s a unapology. So he unapologizes then he apologizes. It’s meaningless as they cancel each other out. He’s laughing because he thinks we’re stupid enough not to realize that he’s trying to take us for fools. Now that I’ve pointed that out will allow him to call us out for never being satisfied, that we’re never happy, that we’re too politically correct. God it never stops. Make it stop! Make it stop!

  109. sectionop92 Says:

FOX News plays the “hate” card because that’s how they get their “leading” ratings. They’re sensationalists…yellow journalists who sell one-sided conservative banter, mindless tabloid stories and hate-filled diatribes that appeal to an audience of old, stupid people that never go away. Ever notice that none of the FOX newswomen are that old and that unattractive? Notice how people like John Gibson, Billo, and Sean Hannity are older males, but try to act dominant? Anyone remember Psych 101 and the traditional roles men and women play? FOX News is just simply a bastion for white people who want to trash a society that they can’t understand…put on by people who can’t understand whom they are themselves within that society.

Of course Jibber-Jab’s apology is unapologetic. Because if it were sincere, it would infer that Snow White go against the grain and show remorse. No host on FOX News can do that without swallowing the cyanide capsule.

  110. foolme1ns Says:

That’s no apology. That puts the blame for the offense on the people offended . “I apologize if you were offended” has never been an apology. “I was completely wrong to have said what I did, and hope that you will accept my apology” is an apology.

John Gibson did not apologize, he simply shifted the blame for the offense.

  111. smkoz Says:

I’m an Australian, and happened across this site via links from news stories here in Australia. Don’t know who John Gibson is, and frankly glad I won’t have to listen to his narrow-minded, callous opinions - what a bitter little man. Heath Ledger is one of Australia’s favourite sons, and I would recommend John Gibson doesn’t book a holiday to Australia any time soon (or ever - we don’t want him setting foot here). Feel sorry that America has to put up with him, but he’s all yours thankfully! smk

  112. Dave C Says:

Ever notice that none of the FOX newswomen are that old and that unattractive?

    Comment by sectionop92 — January 25, 2008 @ 2:28 am

You lost me there. Have you seen John Gibson? That ain’t attractive. Sure, he doesn’t have 2 heads, but my God, imagine having to look at that mug every day. I guess even Fox needs some bruised apples.

  113. Bluestocking Says:

Please…that’s at best a CYA apology, not a genuine one. Does anyone here sincerely believe that anyone, never mind a smug little schmuck like Gibson, could possibly do a bona fide 180-degree reversal — from “I’m not going to pass up a good joke” to “I’m sorry” — in less than 24 hours?!? Surely you jest. Look at his words carefully — he didn’t apologize for making the remarks, only for the fact that he offended other people.

The acid test of a sincere apology hinges on whether the person in question has realized the error of their ways to the point that they make an effort to avoid doing the same thing in the future. When someone apologizes but continues doing the same thing over and over again, it simply proves that the person sees nothing wrong with his/her behavior and that any apologies made for said behavior are meaningless. Anyone here believe that Gibson will make an effort to be more circumspect in his speech in future? I wouldn’t stake my life savings on it, that’s for sure…

  114. stdavis Says:

This idiot needs to be fired. The cold heartless man should be without a job. He is not sorry, when he apoligized he was reading that off of a cue card. Those were not his words, he just wants to keep his job. Heath Ledger was a good man. I have liked him since I was a teenager, I am the same age he was. You never heard a bad thing about him. People need to let him be in peace.

  115. lefty Says:

+100 points on the dow doesn’t solve the housing or credit crises, moron

  116. bobcat_grad Says:

So if I punch someone in the face, all I have to say is, “Hey sorry if your face felt painful after my fist made contact with it.?”

I don’t have to actually acknowledge that punching someone in the face is completely unacceptable?

  117. Bad Eye Says:

Wow. Who woulda thunk my comment would have gone national?

One thing I want to say: I apologize for referring to Gibson as an SOB. That might have been a bit too strong.

I do find it a bit odd, however, that in referencing my comment here, Gibson and Rich didn’t comment on the Bonaduce part. One might say that my comments were taken out of context. Maybe Gibson was having a slow “news” day…I dunno. He did say that he surfed the Internet looking for stories for his show. Just wondering why he picked out Danny. That’s all.

  118. littlecubes44 Says:

This guy is too lame….hahah trying to take back what he said…soo typical…hes just a HUGE joke and well it sucks to know that people like him live in this world…this Gibson guy needs to realize how lucky he is to be some sorta celeb..cuz america doesnt forgive easy unless their on TV…but neways GOD/karma/life will some how catch up to this man in some way or another….and poor little Gibson wont be able to runaway from that!

  119. Pete Bogs Says:

too broad an apology… he needed to specify Heath’s loved ones, including his young daughter…

  120. baileys dad Says:

This is my first comment on this site. I just registered this AM. What a shame that this “American Taliban” gets so much air time to spread their hatred and paranoia, and so little outrage is publicly expressed. How do these guys stay on the air?

  121. nanlichi Says:

John Gibson needs a dull broadhead through the lower GI tract with a gangrenous infection that leads to removing a good portion of his guts and a long miserable life carrying a colostomy bag.

What’s that? You say that’s offensive? Ok, I apologize if anyone reading this is is so sensitive as to be offended. I am really sorry that you don’t see the world as I do and wish you could just get over your misperceptions.

    There. It’s all good.

  122. The Shadow Says:

Good work guys and gals, apparently our blogging got to Gibson and he was forced to say he was sorry. I knew he was sorry the minute it got any press attention. If we had let it go by like the republicans, he would have gone to his grave thinking he was right to say what he did. This proves that if we stand up for something our voices to get heard occasionally. Good job!!!!!!!

  123. Zooey Says:

    There. It’s all good.
    Comment by nanlichi — January 25, 2008 @ 11:55 am

The John Gibson School of Non-Apologies turns out another graduate. Congrats, nanlichi!

  124. nanlichi Says:

It’s hard work Zooey, but I try.

The trick to imitating a rightwinger is to turn everything you’ve learned about decency and tolerance around 180 degrees. Then do the same with facts and logic. Instead of starting with facts and logic and working towards a conclusion, start with the conclusion and throw away any facts that don’t fit. Admittedly, you end up with very few facts this way and sometimes have to create some to support the predetermined conclusion.

Can you imagine how hard it is to be a Bush supporter in the middle of the meltdown of his reign? Poor trolls.

  125. Zooey Says:

Nanlichi, you have a true gift. :-)

  126. texaslady Says:

Not good enough a simple apology, Gibson went on and on past any casual “joke”. Gibson needs to learn an economic lesson like losing his show.

  127. Marie Says:

    #123
    welcome to bailey’s dad.

  128. auntiecoco Says:

yes, the classic non-apology “i’m sorry that YOU have a problem.” unfortunately, john gibson is what we put up with to have free speech. fortunately, no one i know would take his utterance seriously, nor listen to his ghastly program.

  129. texaslady Says:

#131 - many still do listen to the whole Fox comedy hour…and believe what Gibson, O’Reilly have to say. Pretty scarey.

  130. Amelia Says:

he is such a gay loser. Heath was a great actor and a wonderful and good lookin person. hes just a jealous old hag who is stuck hosting a gay show actual people dont watch.all your veiwers are all over the age of 60.so you must really be miserable if you have to say stuff like you did and no apology will ever take wat you said back.Heath was twice the man you ever will be or ever was.so a few words of advise get a life hater.

  131. PoliticalOrphan Says:

This really had nothing to do with gay or anti-gay anything. It was a mockery of another human being’s death - someone with a family and friends, who had a life, who probably realized death was coming and was unable to do anything about it but lie there and wait. He was a real person, not a fictional character to be skewered and mocked on some loser’s malicious gabfest.

Gibson made light of that and said himself he couldn’t resist a good joke. That goes to a thoroughly rotten personal character, and no apology to anyone can fix that.

  132. edwardTheInvincible Says:

FOX news is a joke and an apology isn’t worth anything when they’re not sincere.

  133. ohplease Says:

Notice he doesn’t actually apologize. I’m sorry that YOU were offended by my comments.

  134. SPYWITNESS Says:

ANOTHER PASTY REICH-WING BIGOT SPEAKS FROM THE INFESTED SEWER KNOWN AS ‘FOX NETWORK”!

  135. Jericho Says:

Probably, the guy you offended most is in a tomb, Gibby. I guess he’ll be on his way to haunt you. Anyway, soon as you blow out your last breath, we’ll be taking out the celebration-cd’s…. Everywhere I go, everywhere I see… are morons on TV.

  136. curt Says:

“I’m sorry that some took my comments as anti-gay and insensitive,” said Gibson. “Once again, to anyone offended by my comments, I’m sorry.”

I don’t think Fox News or Gibson have any idea how many of us catagorized as “that some” there really are. Our local merchants who sell products advertised on both Fox TV and radio are going to know. Others in their communities should do likewise.

  137. patou Says:

John Gibson is a pig. I am a 64 year old grandmother, not usually
given to name calling. I repeat. He’s a pig. If Fox had any integrity
(which they don’t) they would fire him. Do you think he’s in a league
    with Larry Craig?

  138. treed Says:

What could one possibly find amusing about the sudden death of a talented young man? With the exception of John Gibson, a FOX News host, the news of Heath Ledger’s death came as a deep shock to all who knew and loved him and to those of us who were simply fans of his work. It saddens us to accept that we have lost this seemingly good-hearted young actor, and that we will never have the opportunity to realize the full potential of his already immense talent. It grieves us to know he leaves behind a beautiful two-year-old daughter, who will grow up not knowing her father’s love.

Instead, John Gibson opened his show with funeral music, stating Heath Ledger was a “weirdo” with a “serious drug problem”. Then Gibson continued to ‘jokingly’ speculate on various mundane current events that may have resulted in Mr. Ledger’s “suicide”. The knowledge that there are people like Gibson living among us, humans with no apparent humanity, has left me sick to my stomach and sick in my heart. At least, Gibson has put himself in a perfect position for a big, fat libel suit, which truly would be funny.

What did Heath Ledger ever do to John Gibson to deserve such crude and hateful remarks? That Gibson could find humor in such a sad event leaves me feeling colder than if I were writing this while sitting outside on this bitter -12° Fahrenheit Alaskan night. That Fox News allowed this to air is unconscionable.

Shame on John Gibson. Shame on Fox News for not knowing how to quit this vile, morally corrupt piece of excrement.
