Americans United for Change plans to spend $8.5 million in an effort to “make sure President Bush’s public approval doesn’t improve as his days in the White House come to an end.” The bulk of the money will be spent on advertising that keeps the focus on the Bush administration’s failures.
A new Harris Poll finds that Americans are unhappy with the current state of the union, a few days before President Bush gives his own State of the Union address on Monday. Eighty-one percent of Americans believe “the current state of the country is fair or poor” and 66 percent say the Iraq war is “going poorly.”
A group of nearly 200 “climate experts, scientists, and mayors” will deliver a “State of Climate” assessment today, ahead of Bush’s State of the Union speech. “[T]oday our nation stands virtually alone in the world community in refusing to accept the need for decisive action,” they report. “We regret to report that the state of the nation’s climate policy is poor.”
“I am a Republican, and at times I’m embarrassed by the lack of cooperation that this president and his appointees have had with the legislative branch,” said Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) in a hearing yesterday. “There is a seething resentment by members of Congress who are Republicans by the fact that this administration has not even cooperated with us.”
American-backed Sunni militias “are being hit with a wave of assassinations and bomb attacks, threatening a fragile linchpin of the military’s strategy to pacify the nation.” American officials warn that the “recent onslaught is jeopardizing” security gains that have been made.
After meeting with military officials, Rep. Ike Skelton (D-MO) opened an Armed Services Committee hearing yesterday stating, “We currently risk a strategic failure in Afghanistan.”
“Bipartisan unity” on the House investigation into the destruction of the CIA’s torture tapes has been “shredded” by “squabbling and dissension.” House Permanent Select Intelligence Committee Chairman Silvestre Reyes (D-TX) and Rep. Pete Hoekstra (R-MI) “are at odds over witness lists, cooperating with the Senate and the very direction of the investigation itself.”
Writing in the WSJ, former President Bill Clinton and California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) advocate “helping the ‘unbanked’ enter the financial mainstream by opening checking and savings accounts.” Americans spend $8 billion annually “at check-cashing outlets, payday lenders and pawnshops on basic financial services” that most can get from checking accounts.
A McKinsey report finds, “at an oil price of $70 a barrel, the six nations of the Gulf Cooperation Council would earn a cumulative $6.2 trillion by 2020, or more than triple the amount they earned from 1993 through 2006. Decisions by Gulf leaders on how to use this wealth will have global repercussions for decades.”
And finally: Striking writers yesterday performed a mock debate on Capitol Hill for members of Congress and the media. The forum was moderated by former White House Press Secretary Dee Dee Myers. Representing the Writers Guild of America cause were writers from The Daily Show, and on the network executive side were Colbert Report writers. While lawmakers raised “serious issues,” “they also couldn’t resist doing a little stand-up.”

Also, if you’re industrious, please place an ad on as many websites as you can urging others to call their Senators and Demand they support Chris Dodd in his Filibuster to Save the 4th Amendment.
We need to OVERWHELM Washington with calls, faxes and emails.
Harry Reid has turned on the Democrats and is supporting Dick Cheney’s legislation which would give retroactive imminity to the telco’s who’ve been spying on us illegally since before 9/11. This is UNACCEPTABLE.
The bill also allows basket warrants. So you could be spied on because you’re caught up in a “basket”. This is UNACCEPTABLE.
Let all your fury and anger out today in a torrent of calls & emails. Don’t stop.

January 24th, 2008 at 9:12 amUS military officials today also confirmed that they are building bases in Iraq that we stay in place for decades. Small story, but worth at least a nod i feel.
I just heard John McCain talking about a strategy of failure in pulling out troops from Iraq. I just heard him use the phrase radical islamic extremism. Is this what anyone wants to hear anymore? Surely Republicans understand that the world has changed and nobody wants war anymore!

Well, there can’t be too many who have a “seething resentment” since the majority of them still walk in lock-step with Bush. But, they do this at their own peril. The public isn’t happy and even a lot of Republicans are not happy and are going to show these Bush sycophants how unhappy they are in the voting booth.

They don’t need to spend any money, Pres. Bush was been, is, and will always remain a miseable failure. It’s only the blin 28%-ers that are fooled all the time and continue to support the failure that is the Bush Legacy.
January 24th, 2008 at 9:19 amI throw out this challenge to the Hillary and Barack supporters.
Get on the phone and demand that they support Chris Dodd’s Filibuster of the despicable FISA legislation. The bill provides retroactive immunity to phones companies who illegally spied on us for years (and before 9/11) without a warrant. It also allows warrants to be issued in “basketsâ€, meaning you could get caught up in that basket even though you’re not the intended target.
The vote starts TODAY.
The time has passed for making statements against the legislation. And a simple NO vote won’t do. The bill must be stopped.Hillary and Barack supporters I challenge you to demand REAL LEADERSHIP and real CHANGE from your candidates. DEMAND they support Chris Dodd in his filibuster. Nothing less is acceptable.
The media will follow Hillary and Barack wherever they go. Back in December, when Chris Dodd won round 1 of the filibuster there was a total media blackout. As a result, most of the country is completely unaware of any of this. If the media is there the country will learn the 4th amendment is about to be stolen and they will become enraged and engaged. We need the help of millions more Americans to win this time!
And by Hillary and/or Obama joining Chris Dodd in Washington it may actually win them enough votes to carry the Democratic Nomination, as many are still undecided. Many want to see LEADERSHIP, mere words about leadership and CHANGE ring hollow with millions of UNDECIDED.
Glenn Greenwald believes that without Hillary and Barack support we will LOSE this time.
So please Hillary and Barack supporters, get on the phone to them and prove that they’re not hollow worthless candidates.

January 24th, 2008 at 9:38 amThe Center for Public Integrity released a report on ‘Pre-Iraq War statements’ by the Bush administration. The research showed Bush and his top 7 Neoturds lied to the American people 932 times trying to justify the Iraq invasion.
Let me say that again; 932 lies, recorded in 2 years.
If we use that number and project out for the entire 7 years, we can estimate a minimum of 3,728 lies.
Ironically, the number of lies and the number of dead American soldiers is remarkably equal.
On the other hand, Bush’s lies could well equal total dead Iarqis…we may never know.
January 24th, 2008 at 9:38 amJay Rockefeller’s unintentionally revealing comments
from Glenn Greenwald, Saldon dot com
Re: The FISA legislation up for immediate vote
…As the Senate takes up “debate” today over granting the President new warrantless eavesdropping powers and granting immunity to lawbreaking telecoms, the individual who joined forces with Dick Cheney to get this ball rolling, AT&T’s personal Senator Jay Rockefeller, made some comments yesterday to The Politico that illustrate just how twisted and dishonest is the thinking of telecom immunity advocates. First, there is this:
Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Jay Rockefeller (D-W.Va.) is predicting the Senate will grant retroactive immunity to telecommunications companies as Congress takes up reauthorization of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). . .
“I think we will prevail,” Rockefeller said on Wednesday, adding that he hoped the Senate will finish the bill by next week. The FISA legislation expires in February, and both President Bush and GOP congressional leaders have demanded new legislation be in place by that time.
“It’s a pretty bad idea to appear cocky,” Rockefeller noted. “I am not pessimistic.”
For an entire year, Congressional Democrats have won absolutely nothing. They’ve given in to the White House on every one of its demands. Yet here is Jay Rockefeller strutting around declaring Victory and having to battle against feelings of cockiness because, finally, he is about to win something.
But ponder the “win” that is giving him these feelings of immense self-satisfaction. Is he finally accomplishing what Democrats were given control of Congress to do: namely, impose some checks and limits on the administration? No. The opposite is true. Rockefeller is doing the bidding of Dick Cheney. The bill that he is working for is the bill the White House demanded. Rockefeller is supported by the entire Bush administration, urged on and funded by the nation’s most powerful telecoms, and is backed by the entire GOP caucus in the Senate.
When Rockefeller smugly announces that he “thinks we will prevail,” the “we” on whose behalf he is so proudly speaking is Bush and Cheney, lawbreaking telecoms, and all Republican Senators. The only parties whom Rockefeller is so happily “defeating” are civil liberties groups and members of his own party. That is what is making him feel pulsating sensations of excitement and “smugness.”

Bush budget won’t fully fund Iraq war
By: David Rogers
“The White House refused to say precisely how much bridge funding will be requested for Iraq and Afghanistan in the new budget.
The White House confirmed Wednesday that its new budget next month will not request a full year’s funding for the war in Iraq, leaving the next president and Congress to confront major cost questions soon after taking office in 2009.
The decision reverses the administration’s stance of just a year ago, when President Bush’s budget made a point of spelling out in advance what he thought the costs would be for military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan for 2008. By comparison, the new budget, to be unveiled Feb. 4, requests only incremental “bridge†funding into 2009 and won’t sustain the military through the full length of the fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30, 2009.”
So, he’s leaving even the funding for the war unfinished, and handing his mess off to another administration.
What a petty man. The guy is a full-bore f#ck-up.

January 24th, 2008 at 10:18 amSorry, you didn’t seem willing to discuss it….several logical and reasonable questions were asked about what you thought for instance about the money spent on swiftboating, 30 mill spent to smear the Clintons, etc. and I have not seen any response. You just continue to press your point so I don’t consider that a discussion.
January 24th, 2008 at 10:18 amFred, you have no control over what fiscal conservatives do or don’t do, so please don’t talk about it and grow up.

Bush is sad and vindictive. That’s why only 25% deadenders continue to blindly support him. It is very important to highlight his sad and vindictive administration in order to help insure that this horror never happens again.

I don’t see Americans United for Change on my list of George Soros projects, but it’s possible that one might have been missed. Even if he is funneling money over to them, why is this a bad thing? Are you jealous that there’s a billionaire out there who contributes to causes that work for the freedom of all Americans and to make America a better place instead of kissing the buttcheeks of big business?
Just for the record (my two cents worth), I don’t see why it’s necessary to spend $8.5 million to convince Americans of what they obviously already know, but AUC is perfectly entitled to do so.

And from a practical stand point, Reagan’s legacy wasn’t negatively impacted by his support for voodoo economics - because some just wanted to put it all behind them. And as a consequence, we have been assaulted for two decades with the lie that Reaganomics worked, and works.
January 24th, 2008 at 10:34 amFred, I understand why people think it’s a good idea. I disagree. I think there are better ways to spend that money that would better benefit the democratic party and the country itself.

sorry dim wit but I am a little offended when a self acclaimed fiscal conservative accuses me of being a blind partisan……just hit a button I guess….
January 24th, 2008 at 10:37 amHow about saving all the negatives for the trolls and neocons? WE are supposed to be the ideological side that accepts and respects diversity of opinion. Let the Republicans eat their own, not us. We need unity in what really matters. If a group wants to spend money attacking Bush, we should be able to voice our opinion, pro or con, about the ideological and tactical issues of that plan. But then, we need to move on to the issues that unite us as the truly moral compass for our political process. If we don’t, we are doing the Republicans work for them and THEY WILL WIN.

Anybody catch Coultergeist’s column this week? Yeah, I know — it’s tough to read over breakfast.

She has been systematically trashing any Republican candidate who isn’t Mitt Romney (she devoted at least three of her columns to shredding Huckabee when he looked popular), and this week her target is McCain (since he looks like the threat du jour).
Of course, everybody knows that Coulter is a joke. However, I was fascinated as I read about how “liberal” McCain is — she almost had me convinced to support him.
Then I remembered what a warmonger he is…
January 24th, 2008 at 10:41 amFrm Good Golly’s Wiki link:
Reaganomics had its roots in two of Reagan’s campaign promises: lower taxes and a smaller government. Reagan reduced income tax rates, with the largest rate reductions on the highest incomes; in a time of battling inflation, Reagan raised deficit spending to its highest level (relative to GDP) since World War II. As a result, there has been endless debate on whether the economic trends of the Reagan years actually came from the free market, or from government stimulus of the kind advocated by Keynesian theorists.
Is this your “proof?”
How silly.

I can understand this feeling. Congressional Republicans have been voting in lockstep to give Bushney whatever he wants and have gotten very little in return. I expect this “embarrassment” level to increase as we get closer to November, since all the House Republicans and many of the GOP senators will be running for re-election on a record of supporting policies a clear majority of Americans are against.
There’s a cure for this “embarrassment”, Congressman Rohrabacher. Quit blindly supporting the Bush agenda.

Why are their standards in their candidates so low?
January 24th, 2008 at 10:54 amSome may feel it unnecessary to reinforce Bush’s failed presidency to a public who already recognizes it; but in the course of time, the horrible Bush legacy will begin to fade a bit and, like all memories, become softer.
January 24th, 2008 at 10:56 amFuture generations must not ever be allowed to gloss over this historical shame; Bush’s abuses must be solidly recognized for time immemorial as having been the most destructive, Constitutionally corrosive and publicly corrupt. His lemmings and minions will not cease in their efforts to glorify him and their efforts must be countered.
“A new Harris Poll finds that Americans are unhappy with the current state of the union, a few days before President Bush gives his own State of the Union address on Monday.”
As Americans were last year at the time of his SOTU address, and the year before that. It won’t matter to Bush, though. We will be treated to the same carefully choreographed show of Bush proclaiming that the SOU is just peachy keen, all the GOP legislators will applaud every time they are signaled to do so, and there will be plenty of props in the balcony — military personnel, snowflake babies, etc.
I think I’ll skip it.

I sent him an email in December, regarding this, during Dodd’s first filibuster and he read it on air. He continued the topic into the next day.
I need all the great TP folks here to bombard him with emails, once again, demanding he put pressure on Hillary and Barack to join the filibuster and save the 4th amendment. It may be the last hope we have for success.

January 24th, 2008 at 11:23 am“According to you libs, the Republican “base†are the rich. The primary beneficiaries of this tax rebate plan are those with family incomes less than $150,000.”
This is a bipartisan deal, meaning a consensus must be reached before legislation occurs. Did you seriously think republican lawmakers wouldn’t make sure there was something in the deal for their wealthy constituents?

I’d be more satisfied if the cap was $50,000.
January 24th, 2008 at 11:25 amThis stimulus package is great and all, but isn’t it just more borrowed money that’s being doled out?
January 24th, 2008 at 11:28 amWho’s gonna pay it off? Your kids and grandkids…
I’d be much happier if it were being funded by rescinding the tax break for the 1%ers…

Sorry I didn’t reply fast enought for you, General Bilbo Sir, I had to drive to work after I checked Thinkfast early this morning at home, didn’t have time to write much or reply. I am always happy to make you want to vomit by answering you, you know that.
As far as my point about the 8.5 million, it is their money, sure, go ahead and waste it on keeping Bush’s poll numbers low. It isn’t like he is running for anything again, it just seems like spite to launch a campaign to try and persuade the American public not to support him. But whatever, I sure there are no good Progressive charities who would have wanted that money.

Absolutly….and it will eventually happen…..remember read my lips bushI…..these tax cuts are unreasonably greedy and unsustainable…..we will at some point be desperate to pay our bills and that will end the sham again.

Which happens to comprise over 94% of American households.
But it’s a big show of Republican’t generosity that 94% of American households are the “primary beneficiaries of this tax rebate plan”.
Well, it IS out of character, I’ll grant you that, GiGi.

January 24th, 2008 at 11:32 amThe #1 good idea goes to RUCerious…Time for this country to pay cash up front instead of borrowing from our enemies to declare war’s against other enemies and our own people….The way it’s going three generation’s of tax payer’s will still be buried in the bull shit bush debt….Blessings

But this targeted at workers, not business owners and the affluent , like Bush’s previous tax giveaways.
And as we all know, a rebate isn’t a refund.

That’s not really a theory, Gigi. That’s pretty much just a right-wing fairy tale that they keep believing will happen someday if we just give it enough time and sink enough money into it.
In fact, even Bush’s Treasury secretary admits that tax cuts don’t pay for themselves.

Keeping Bush in the crosshairs means fewer votes downticket for Republican’ts. It’s just one of the many ways we have of saving the USA from incompetent traitors and shameless liars like today’s GOP.

wondering about that -
January 24th, 2008 at 11:40 amwill this rebate be counted as INCOME for tax purposes, as most people found out too late the last time they pulled this trick?
gg’s assumption will only pay off if the increase is also enough to cover principal + interest for the duration of the loan…

Actually, the Republican base is the stupid, rich or poor, although the rich do at least get a very good ROI, financially, even if they lose their democracy and civil rights. Being republicans, they, of course, place no value on anything they can’t brag to their neighbors about. Only the very stuidest Americans would vote for those that routinely steal from them, send their children to die in the sand, and sell our manufacturing base to China and India so we can die of pisoning and shoddy engineering. That’s the republican base: the idiots.

That’s the very definition of a rebate, and I don’t think it’s changed since the last one.
January 24th, 2008 at 11:43 amIt’s a great idea to continue to remind all Americans of the dumbfounding quantity of mistakes this administration has made.
Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it.

Think about what you’re saying. A rebate is an advance - on expected future tax payments. What you’re advocating is just kicking the car down the road, in perpetuity.
January 24th, 2008 at 11:46 amThat should be “can.”
