Attorney General Michael Mukasey today told reporters that “he doesn’t plan for a special prosecutor to investigate whether the CIA broke the law when it destroyed videotapes of terror interrogations, defying some in Congress who want an independent look” at the case. “Speaking tersely and in an even, low tone,” Mukasey refused to say “whether he has seen any evidence that destroying the interrogation tapes violated court orders or otherwise interfered with any case.”

January 25th, 2008 at 1:34 pmBush may become the first president to be impeached and sent to prison. Since day one, he’s done everything to cover his tracks and cover his ass. Unfortunately for him, more of his dirtywork has been outed and is yet to be outed before he’s able to run out of office. He may think that he wants another year in office; in actuality, the amount of dirt which will come out and totally blacken his name in history over the next year will do far more long-term damage to the Bush name than if he’s agree to leave because he’s hated and a lameduck. But then, his false sense of bravado always trumps his logic!
January 25th, 2008 at 1:34 pmI’m frankly a little surprised by this announcement.
Not for its naked disregard for truth and the rule of law, oh no no no — that’s to be expected.
No, what surprises me is that appointing a Special Prosecutor would give the administration the opportunity to claim that they can’t comment on an “ongoing investigation”.
But I guess they’re afraid they might unwittingly appoint another “renegade, out-of-control prosecutor” (i. e. one who respects the law) and the investigation might actually go somewhere.

January 25th, 2008 at 1:39 pmplunger: The word IS getting out that our election system is a scam and our media is a sham. More people are cancelling their newspapers making the print media almost totally irrelevant; talk radio is becoming a thing of the past, and the television is only there for watching reality shows and good movies. I’d say the corporate whoring sycophants who call themselves “news media” played their last hand and lost.
http://www.bradblog.com and blackboxvoting.org will show you what a total scam our voting system currently IS and has been for the past two elections….you be the judge! But the evidence is now clear and nothing’s being done to protect our vote from hacking.
Paper ballots (ala hand counted style) is the ONLY WAY our votes will be counted properly. It’s the new “retro movement”! And why not since the paper ballots using a Diebold OptiScanner has been and will be easily hacked and unless a demand for a hand count of the paper behind it all takes place, these elections will still be hacked.
The reichwing nuts wet dream is having Hillary as their opponent so watch how they hack the various states to ensure their goal. They don’t have a snowball’s chance in hell of standing up to Obama or Edwards or the combination of the two and they know it. January 25th, 2008 at 1:47 pmjb: You got it. We did it in Iraq to “ensure their democratic vote” so why not here? It’s the way it was done before the reichwing figured out how they could 1) mandate the use of touch screen machines by prostituting the handicap lobbies and 2) find a donor like Diebold who could “put in the fix” through their machines which were mandated for use by each state (along with two others). What a plan!! And, we all fell for it – hook, line, and sinker; after all, Diebold’s ATM’s seem to function properly, don’t they??
If we can ensure the vote of the Iraqi people to support our occupation, then we can damn well ensure the vote of our own people! We even had armed guards at the voting sites in Iraq to make sure everything was on the “up and up”….time to get “Retro” here! Demand HAND COUNTED PAPER BALLOTS now before it’s too late and the Repukes put in the fix on the 08 elections!

lefty: Just like the Big Pharma scan on Business Week this week about Lipitor, we now find that 8 of the 9 people reviewing these bogus studies had a “vested interest” in the company producing the drug. Now they’ve found that women don’t benefit from statins AT ALL and that men over 65 have no cardiac benefits from these drugs. Amazing since every senior I know is on a cholesterol drug.
Notice how these drug companies are quaking? Jarvic’s ad for Lipitor has been running non stop and Merck has been taking out full page ads for their drugs in every newspaper. It’s OVER FOR THIS CHARADE.
Imagine this: If you doc called you into his office and told you that you could spend thousands of dollars on a cholesterol drug (which may lower cholesterol but the studies have not shown that cholesterol numbers mean anything related to heart disease) that does nothing for women of ANY AGE and nothing for men over 65, would you take it??? Shit no!
January 25th, 2008 at 1:54 pm#2,
I’m pretty sure it was.
Given the overwhelming evidence of the stuffing of the DOJ with not just political cronies intent on turning Justice into a wholly owned subsidiary of the GOP and its business investors but also religious conservatives intent on turning secular law into religious law, at all levels of the department, and the record of Bush presenting only those two types of candidate for such appointments I was baffled ( yet sadly not surprised) that the Dems accepted Mukasey as Gonzalez’s replacement. The problem was just with the DOJ’s leader but with the institution as a whole.
January 25th, 2008 at 1:55 pmIt was clear from his testimony that Mukasey was never going to ‘reform’ the DOJ in the slightest but apparently the Democrats chose optimism and generosity of faith over reason.
IMHO I don’t understand why the AG postion had to be filled so urgently–the competent professional staff of the DOJ might have been relieved of interference and the incompetent cronies/insurgents would have been leaderless. Along with the state of things in Congress–the priorites and balance of power) the AG postion could have been frankly been left open ( not sure iof that would have been actually legal)–or at least left undecided for a while.
Instead sod all has changed and real justice and professionalism in the DOJ has been definitvely delayed until 2009.
Who the heck is Mukasey anyway? A loyal subject of the King, or an employee of the American people?

Congress: The United States Constitution vests all legislative power to and in the Congress.
Legislative power means “pass laws”.
