In an interview with right-wing FrontPage Magazine, President Bush’s former speechwriter, David Frum, addressed the question of how conservatives should frame global warming:
Look, Gore-type environmentalists have been wanting to take your car away for 60 years for whatever reason they can find. If it wasn’t global warming, it would be something else. This is what they have always wanted to do. They have wanted to take away your car. They don’t like suburbs. They want to stop the trend of American life. We are not trying to achieve anything other than a cleaner environment. That’s it. We have a more limited and more rational agenda than they do.
And yet apparently all theyve been able to accomplish is the taking away of David Frums medication.
January 28th, 2008 at 8:05 pmOh, please, would someone take this jackass’s brain away.
January 28th, 2008 at 8:07 pmShouldn’t be a problem, weighs maybe 2 oz.
Just another right wind idea prostitute!
January 28th, 2008 at 8:09 pmGreat, now Frum thinks he’s writing a new speech, “The Axles of Evil.”
January 28th, 2008 at 8:10 pmcan we deport that friggin’ moron? And I hope he didn’t get a VISA cuz there weren’t enough morons to write George Bush speeches.
January 28th, 2008 at 8:10 pmHave another slug of koolaid David!
January 28th, 2008 at 8:12 pmWhat a dork. You know if we had a decent mass transportation system we wouldn’t need to use cars all the time.
January 28th, 2008 at 8:13 pmFu(k, I just want decent mass transportation so I don’t HAVE to use my car to get to work.
January 28th, 2008 at 8:13 pmThey really just don’t get it.
Wow, cali, that was deja vu all over again!!
January 28th, 2008 at 8:14 pmI was thinking the same thing. Great minds think alike!
January 28th, 2008 at 8:14 pmEverything you need to know about David Frum, but could not bare to ask.
From Wiki:
Frum, ex Dubya speechwriter.
David Frum now speaks on behalf of the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative think-tank, as well as the Fraser Institute, a like minded think tank based in Canada; On October 11, 2007, Frum announced on his blog that he was joining Rudolph Giuliani’s presidential campaign as a senior foreign policy adviser.
Frum’s latest book, An End to Evil, was co-written with Richard Perle.
January 28th, 2008 at 8:17 pmDavid Frum = CUA!! Completely Useless American!!!
A complete, intact, grade A scumbag!!!

I can’t wait for the exciting conclusion where they both shoot each other in the head.
January 28th, 2008 at 8:20 pmWhere has anyone said that addressing unregulated spewing of crap into the air means no cars? It is possible to have transportation (even i ndividual transportation) without crapping up the planet. This is not an either-or proposition. Is it that the conservatives are so lacking in imagination and creativity that they can’t envision a condition of using energy without having to pollute?
Sheesh.

January 28th, 2008 at 8:41 pmMoving around in a gas guzzling SUV does not equal freedom.
January 28th, 2008 at 8:41 pmAl Gore wants to take your car…And force the auto industry to realize the opportunity in front of their eyes, by forcing them to have to re-tool to enact friendlier environmental policies, and thereby Actually get a total retooling of their out of date plants, and make them all new like, at the Tax payers (Tax subsidies) and consumers (tax payers also) expense. Since all business costa are borne by the consumer anyways, the auto industry would be forced to come into the 21st cenury kicking and screaming all the way, and then be forced to make gobs and gobs of money, as we all now turn out pruchaces inward to our bretherne american workers, and help lift ourselves back into a world competitive position.
January 28th, 2008 at 8:43 pmBut, of course the auto industry is loathe to do ANYTHING that spends one red cent, even if those cents would be reimbursed through tax incentives and increased American purchases.
I forgot to add. Al Gore wants to take your car…and give you the opportunity to have the ability to purchase a more realistic one that will allow the planet to survive.

January 28th, 2008 at 8:50 pmNo, sorry everyone, it’s all true. We “Gore-Type Environmentalists” (we refer to ourselves as GTE, actually) have been plotting this for almost a century now. Does no one remember the GTE/Ford riots back in 1908 when Ford first floated his Model-T idea? And don’t be fooled into thinking we were only after the gas-driven models, we were also after Stanley from the moment he announced his steam-driven auto. And we have fought them ever since.
Yep, we have vowed never to rest until all Americans, worker, executive, common criminal, all of them have been stripped of their automobiles. Then we go into Stage 2: denying Americans their right to their legs.
And why? Frum is right again. We hate the suburbs.
Seriously now, who needs The Onion when you have Republicans?
January 28th, 2008 at 8:51 pmWhat ever happened to the electric car?
Oh, yeah – General Motors. How is that working out for them?
January 28th, 2008 at 8:58 pmDo these people have any idea how stupid they sound? That sounds like something a 12 year old would say, not a thinking rational adult.

Comment by tokin librul — January 28, 2008 @ 8:46 pm
Yes, moving around is good and is a freedom, but there are many ways we could accomplish this without giving up our “free” clean air. Energy independence would give us all more freedom. Clean independent transportation would be true freedom. As it is now we rely on the oil companies, the nations with oil and we pay them for every drive around the block. No freedom comes without responsibility, but why can’t we work at finding ways (mass transit, fuel cells, solar etc.) to move ourselves around.
January 28th, 2008 at 8:59 pmComment by bilbobaggins — January 28, 2008 @ 8:59 pm
That’s because Frum is not a thinking, rational adult.
January 28th, 2008 at 9:00 pmI dont get it, if your ‘conservative’ you should want ‘conservative’ things.
How is a traffic jam, which Frum wants, apparently, conservative?
They move slow, waste fuel, and make for road rage. I also dont think sucking exhaust is heallthy as automotive air conditioning system dont scrub the air of harmful pollutants.
January 28th, 2008 at 9:00 pmIf the US automakers had any balz or brainz they’d be copying/licensing/using the shit out of Tesla’s technology.
January 28th, 2008 at 9:06 pmAnd probably Frum knows his audience are not thinking, rational adults either. After all, these are the mouthbreathing types who need an authoritarian father figure to tell them what to do, and what to be afraid of.
January 28th, 2008 at 9:09 pmI stood in line to pay for gas at a station here in my town and watched a guy pay for a gallon of gas with a big pile of change. The cashier told me that was happening more and more.
There’s more than one way to take your car away from you.
January 28th, 2008 at 9:22 pmIf the US automakers had any balz or brainz they’d be copying/licensing/using the shit out of Tesla’s technology.

Tesla got his cap stolen and his inventions are now mounted on every home in the U.S. It is called the electric meter.
January 28th, 2008 at 9:24 pmWhat’s wrong with greatly increasing mpg by making electric or electric-hybrid cars? Not enough profits for the OIL corporations? No need to invade and occupy the Middle East? No self-destruction by the greenhouse effect? More American jobs? Sounds good to me.
January 28th, 2008 at 10:03 pmOh no it’s the boogie man! Al Gore wants your car! Lock up the Lexus!
January 28th, 2008 at 10:25 pmI do want to take away your SUV. I want to take away your pickup which has no business purpose.
Why are you all so scared of saying what is necessary: automobiles are a significant cause of global warming? If we are ever to get to the Kyoto goals, traffic must be reduced significantly. This means major mass transit projects over the profits of car companies, unless those companies make the trains and buses.
There are some industries that are evil. Automobiles, coal and oil are the worst. Yes, they create many jobs, but those jobs can be diverted into clean industries. Laying and repairing track. Operating transit. Building wind power. Researching and building solar power.
There is so much that can be done to transition away from automobile traffic. And the end result must be getting polluting vehicles off the roads.
I would hope that Al Gore does want to take away your SUVs. I certainly do.
