Five U.S. soldiers killed by roadside bomb.

“A roadside bomb killed five American soldiers Monday in the northern province described as one of al-Qaida in Iraq’s last strongholds, just days after a massive house explosion and suicide attack killed 40 people in the provincial capital.” The Mosul attack against the U.S. patrol takes to 36 the number of soldiers killed in Iraq this month, up from 23 in December.

Digg It!

This comes on the heels of McCain assuring the voters of Florida that the United States will be engaging in more wars in the future. The Republicans seem to be attempting to see who is the more militant of their candidates while the Democrats still insist upon leaving some troops in Iraq or “over the horizon” as if that will somehow placate the fears of the Iraqis, who justifiably believe that the U.S. will send their troops back into Iraq at a moment’s notice. To recall the words of Tennyson,”Into the valley of death” rode the 160,000.

  2. Badmoodman says:

    Must be time to re-surge-itate.

  3. Zimzone says:

These numbers will look good compared to what will happen when Sadr ends his militia’s cease fire.

Given that, January totals are still 50% above December.

Rightoric states we are now ‘winning’ in Iraq. By whose measure do we define ‘winning’? Less than 50 dead / month?

  4. GSD says:

McCain is an unhinged warmonger and Bush is a despicable tyrant.

    Both are unfit for command.

And yet , later this evening , we will all be treated to our imbecilic Chimperor-In-Chief claiming how “successful” the Splurge has been ; what a goddamn joke and a waste …………..

There is nothing on this Earth that is anywhere near as foul as our stupid president’s lies and general behavior……….

  6. Cats r Flyfishn says:

But, but, but, the surge is working.

  7. raynman says:

I’m sure that Bush will take time in his State of the Union to honor the memory of the soldiers who’ve fallen under his command. Of course, the only way that would be possible would be to offer his resignation…..

  8. gulfwargrunt says:

“Iraqi forces” are allegedly massing for an “Iraqi-led” operation to sweep Mosul for “Al Queda” insurgents. I’ll believe that when I see it.

  9. LividLib says:

    Okay!
    Okay!
You guys were right all along!
    The surge IS working!

Can we bring the troops home now?
We really don’t need any more of these success stories…

  10. MCMetal says:

The surge is working, but there is clearly still work to be done as al-Qaida in Iraq has a few remaining strongholds.

Ummm , how is it “clearly working” , you GOP/Chimpy leg humper ?

We were bombarded with (typically) , more lies about how the obvious effect(s) of the “Surge” has led to less US troop deaths ; what’s your rationale now ?

You yo-yo’s change your statements more often than a pinwheel changes directions during a tornado………………

  11. GSD says:

Good Golly, why should anyone believe the people who have been promoting happy talk like that for the last five years?

Especially when the happy talk is to their political advantage?

  12. joe cantwell says:

    the surge has failed.

    another bush policy blunder.

  13. Erroll says:

What good golly conveniently neglects to mention is that it is the presence of the U.S. military that is attracting recruits for al Qaeda-said the spider to the fly.

  14. bilbobaggins says:

goon_golly expects us to believe that 9 of 18 provinces are now under Iraqi control. As usual, he neglects to provide any proof of his claims. He really thinks that we are going to believe something he says, just because he says it? What a fool and what a tool.

  15. barfly says:

“9 of 18 provinces have been turned over to Iraqi security control, with a 10th slated for March, and an 11th expected by June which will allow for significant troop withrdawal. ”

That would be the security forces that are rife with partisan insurgents. I predict by June, Good Golly will have a different nickname, since he’s now on record predicting success by June, and when it doesn’t happen, he’ll be too embarrassed by his own cupidity to show up, and take his medicine like a man.

Some think that we may be close to 18 out of 18 by the end of December. That is progress, but there is still obviously work to be done.

And whom is that according to ?

    The White House ?

Don’t make me nauseous ; post fact , not useless propogandist tripe ……….

  17. joe cantwell says:

the bush policy advisors and supporters of the surge are foolishly optimistic at the expense of our troops’ lives. these “crack pot” neo-cons and “think tank” pundits have blood on their hands for their hubris and their lies. this will change, of course, come november. in the mean though our troops suffer for the mistakes of our so called leaders.

Is it only al Qaeda in Iraq that is carrying out these attacks?

Do they wear armbands during these attacks, just to help US forces identify them better?

    EXPECT WORSE TO COME

1 crucial Iraqi ally of the United States in its recent successes in the country is threatening to withdraw his support and allow al-Qa’ida to return if his fighters are not incorporated into the Iraqi army and police.

“If there is no change in three months there will be war again,” said Abu Marouf, the commander of 13,000 fighters who formerly fought the Americans. He and his men switched sides last year to battle al-Qa’ida and defeated it in its main stronghold in and around Fallujah.

    2 Iraq’s Sadrists Seek to End Cease-Fire

Influential members of Muqtada al-Sadr’s movement have urged the anti-U.S. Shiite cleric not to extend a cease-fire when it expires next month, officials said Monday, a move that could jeopardize recent security gains.

Telling a troll to knock off posting useless insipid piss isn’t all that time-consuming nor on-going if it’s done properly…….

Where’s the political reconciliation? Yes, there apparently is still work to be done, and not militarily speaking.

Don’t be silly, Lefty. Gigi knows she can serve her country much more effectively from her bedroom, valiantly manning her keyboard and reiterating the patriotic talking points that her president wants to catapult.

when Maliki illegaly extends foreign troop presence in Iraq , without a vote in parliment , you can expect many troops deaths to come

Well at least they died in a time of political progress… if you count signing a treaty not called a treaty to keep us there for as long as someone with Bush’s interests is in power.

Soldiers can’t fix our doctored Iraqi politics, and unlike Japan or Germany the people attack them all the time.

  28. Erroll says:

    #29-

“Soldiers can’t fix our doctored Iraqi politics…” But they can certainly choose not to fight in this illegal and immoral occupation, which is the best and the most effective way of bringing the U.S. war machine to a halt. See the documentary Sir! No Sir! as proof of this assertion.
