On a voice vote, the House passed a 15-day extension of the Protect America Act today, which is due to expire on February 1. The Senate is still debating the issue and is expected to vote on an extension tomorrow. Senate Republicans “reversed their opposition to extending the existing law” today, but the White House is still threatening a veto if the Senate enacts a 30-day extension.
UPDATE: McJoan explains what’s going on.
NO IMMUNITY FOR THE TELECOMS…this is evidence we need to bring this criminal administration to trial.

Convict and imprison the entire Chimpy administration , past and present.
January 29th, 2008 at 5:52 pmOK, so maybe I’m over-simplifying things a bit, but – how about no extension at all? Let it fall. Then, you can start from the beginning (which is a good place to start), and craft a new law that grants the necessary privileges to law enforcement, without trampling all over the constitution at the same time. I know that FBI/CIA need to be able to do their jobs in a way that keeps everyone safe, but we don’t need to repeal the fourth amendment while they do it. Let this one expire and start from the beginning to craft a new one that everyone agrees on.
January 29th, 2008 at 6:02 pmThank God the brave men and women of Congress are protecting America for another 15 days.

sorry about the OT, but i just found this on the google news:
Future of FutureGen project uncertain
Bizjournals.com – 44 minutes ago
Reports that the US Department of Energy is planning to pursue alternatives to the FutureGen Alliance’s $1.8 billion federally funded clean-coal power plant drew the ire of US Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill.
US drops support for clean coal plant: lawmaker Reuters UK
Energy Department pulling plug on FutureGen Crain’s Chicago Business
didn’t that pompous asso just last night tout COAL (and nu-ku-lar) for energy supplies ???
yes, he did… from the first story:
“For five years, the Department of Energy has urged our state and others to pursue, at great expense and sacrifice, this critically important energy project,” Durbin said. “When the city of Mattoon, Ill., was chosen … the Secretary of Energy set out to kill FutureGen.
“The final decision must be made by President Bush who announced FutureGen in 2003 and even referred to this critical technology research in his State of the Union speech (Monday) night.”
another opposite day in bushco bizarro world…
January 29th, 2008 at 6:04 pmand durbin’s pissed.
Tell Chene-Bush to: “Take it or leave it!” [without immunity].
January 29th, 2008 at 6:07 pmbut the White House is still threatening a veto if the Senate enacts a 30-day extension.

My thoughts exactly! Let them veto it, then “work on other things.” There are plenty of things needed in our government that could keep congress plenty busy so that they don’t have to revisit this issue until, say … February 2009.
January 29th, 2008 at 6:24 pmDemocratic party politicians – desperately hoping that the whole media (err I mean blog – TV ignores this issue) coverage of this drops out, dies down, so that…
…so that they can vote the way they are paid to vote by their lobbyist masters.
January 29th, 2008 at 7:03 pmThe trols in Congress can except 15 days, but balk at more?
They wantof all what we used to call “freedom”. Give them time to get the paper work done. They have the Justice Department on their side. All they want to do is dot the “i’s”.
January 29th, 2008 at 7:10 pmWhy don’t the Democrats tell the Republicans to go suck eggs and let the act expire? What’s the hurry. The system works fine like it is and they know it. I can’t believe they are allowing themselves to be herded again by the Republiscums with their fear tactics.
Besides, Bush can’t be too worried if he is willing to risk getting hit just to veto a 15 day extension. Boy wouldn’t that be something if we got hit right after he vetoed the extension.
January 29th, 2008 at 8:36 pmThe Republicans can keep Obama or Hillary distracted with this FISA issue all the way up to the election.
And they can say repeatedly that they are soft on terrorism.
January 29th, 2008 at 8:36 pmWow, that is 15 days less than you need to get a retroactive FISA warrant. Hmmm.
January 29th, 2008 at 10:13 pmWhoops, talking out my ass.
January 29th, 2008 at 10:16 pmdoes nancy pelosi suck bush’s dick? It sure does seem that way. TRAITORS should be tried and executed.
