    Damn.
The only anti-corporate candidate in the race.
The only candidate not accepting money from big Corporate entities.
The only candidate with honest answers on health care.

Perhaps the above is why he can’t finish higher than third, I’m not sure. One rumor out there is he would be Obama’s AG. That would be a hell of a lot better than the McCain choice, which would have LIEberman as VP & Rotten 9/11 Rudy as AG.

Can you imagine Rudy as AG? He’d make Gonzo look like Jesus Christ.

  11. toasterhead says:

And the two-person Democratic horserace the media wanted months ago is finally here. Congrats, corporations!

  12. tom says:

So it will soon be down to Obama vs. McCain . . . vision vs. a wet dream.

  13. nffcnnr says:

Bummer for the Politico.com guys. Now whose hair are they gonna obsess about??

  14. tarazan says:

Edwards did not get any support from his own party….even the man who ran with him in last presidential election, Senator Kerry went to support Obama, the Kennedys and others went to support Obama.

The Democrats machine, black and white are rallying behind Hillary. The people outside the machine are considering Obama.

If Hillary wins…there will be no change at all…with McCain on the other side…the war party had won.
Hillary as much war monger as McCain…she is trying to tune her voice of war down during the primaries..but you will hear her voice loudly soon should she win the nomination , it will be all for war…
It is sad that while the majority of Americans are calling for end to this war…the warmongers are winning the elections.

    Are American truly represented….?!!

This Republiscum tool actually thinks that America had a say in whether or not Edwards was the Presidential nominee. I guess he missed the part where the Democratic machine turned their backs on him and the “libural” media did a virtual black-out on his campaign. What a tool and what a fool. he is.

Speaketh a GOP/Chimpy backing idiot sycophant.

    Hey turdburglar.

The morons who back the same crappy party that you do , proved how absolutely moronic you all are last night.

More than half of the GOP voters last night claimed that the economy was the No#1 issue on their mind ……And so they went out , and voted for the CANDIDATE THAT IS THE LEAST KNOWLEDGEABLE IN THAT PARTICULAR AREA , in Frankenstein McLame.

You GOP backers are simply mindless drones.

  28. bilbobaggins says:

As I correctly predicted after Edwards’ disastrous defeat in Iowa. Like I posted the night of the Iowa caucus, if he couldn’t win Iowa, he wasn’t going to win anywhere.
    Comment by Exley

A troll prophet Exley has spoken and we must all pay attention. He is the one who is in the know.

I could have predicted that Edwards wasn’t going to make it and it didn’t have anything to do with his defeat in Iowa. It had everything to do with our rigged “two party” system where our parties and the “libural” media pick who will run.

  29. toasterhead says:

Just how did these choices get whittled down for us who have had no say yet? What an appalling system where the average America is either left out of the process or is swayed by corporate interests. Fools.

    Comment by gus smith — January 30, 2008 @ 9:43 am

    Money.

That’s the answer. It takes an absurd amount of money to run a campaign, and fundraising is far more important to a candidate than votes. The primary race is not about who best represents Americans’ views, or who has the best platform, or who has the most potential to change or unite the country. It’s about who can raise the most cash to pay for transportation and attack ads and pollsters and advisors and lawyers and marketers. If you don’t get the news coverage, you can’t raise the cash, and if you can’t raise the cash, you don’t get the news coverage and get dropped from the debates. And thus the “unfavorable elements” are whittled away by the corporate system.

The entire campaign system needs a major overhaul. Unfortunately, the people in the position to do anything about the corrupt system got to their positions by the grace of this corrupt system. So nothing will change.

  30. Zimzone says:

Corporatists, however, did not succeed with Rotten Rudy.

He was their man. They did not expect Americans to ignore Mr. 9/11, but we did.

Many voters have the ‘Diogenes affect’, and are looking for an honest man. Edwards may have been that man.

Corporatists despise honesty; it’s bad for the bottom line.

And to our Vulnerable Adult Voter blowing smoke here, you can take your faux socialist concerns to Mr. Macaca, whom you most likely support even though he’s dead meat.

  31. MCMetal says:

  32. Exley says:

“Exley has spoken and we must all pay attention.”

You would be wise to do so, Bilbo. I was excoriated by various posters when I made my now-proven-to-be-correct prediction on Iowa caucus night. Vindication is always pleasant.

  33. tarazan says:

The whole primaries and caucusing system stinks….
Voting should be done for all states in one day…yes in one day.

If we have one day election…then probabaly McCain might not be the winner yesterday…probably Senators Biden, Gravel, rep. Kucinich will score much higher..

It is sad to decide the nominee based on results from few races of small states, which are ahead on the schedule of many other big states.

It happens in every presidential elections.
It is not a fair and honest representation.

Be sure also that voting machines have some paper backing….

  34. bilbobaggins says:

    Vindication is always pleasant.
    Comment by Exley

Exley was not vindicated. Anyone on this board could have predicted that Edwards would not be the candidate. He was anti corporation and since the corporations own this country and our political system, it didn’t take a rocket scientist to know that his candidacy and that of Kucinich were doomed from the get go. But I am willing to allow this loon his delusions of grandeur, since his head is going to explode on the day after the 2008 election.

  36. Blame Canada says:

The people are getting what they deserve. In this country the change MUST come from the voters. Problem is not enough people vote. Everyone gets all excited that 50% of the population bothered to vote in a general election. We hear about what a great turnout it was. 50% is failure. It’s nothing to be proud of.

People in this country are great at looking at others (politicians) as the problem, but in reality it is the people who are the problem. There is way to much apathy in this country. Way to many people who don’t care or believe their vote doesn’t count. We keep electing the same mistake over and over. Has anything gotten better for the majority of the population over the last 40 years? Has education gotten better? Health Care? Poverty? Pollution? Energy? Are we not still trying to fix these problems? Only we can force the changes we want. Politicians will not do it on their own. If we want more choices in this country we must make more choices. Don’t look to the media to do it, or the government, or religion because they have no interest in it.

We all know people who don’t participate in this country. They are happy to let others do the work and then they complain about the outcome. Well it’s up to us to give these people a swift kick in the butt and make them participate. Talk to them about it, drag them to a rally, shame or embarrass them into getting involved. The fewer people participate in this country the more the politicians and media owners like it. It’s not good enough to just live in this country. It is a responsibility to be involved it the decision making. It really isn’t asking very much, and the rewards can be great for everyone.

It’s obvious now that were going to end up with a couple of mediocre choices for the next president. It will be up to all of us to make that next president and the congress do what we want, and if they don’t we have to make sure they are looking for another line of work.

We all can see what no oversight has done to the stock market. That oversight is supposed to come from our elected officials. But for our elected officials to do their job they must also be subjected to oversight, and that is our job. We haven’t been doing a very good job of it.

Yeah, & Ex Lax was soooo right about the ‘06 elections, eh!

Hillary is trying to get Dean to restore the delegates from Mi. & Fla.
Gov. Dean, you have to stand up to your original decision on this.
Florida & Michigan knew the consequences of moving up their primaries when they made that decision.

This plays into Edwards’ decision, as well. Hillary must not be given ‘dead delegates’ to resurrect her relevance. Period.

Edwards was outmanouvered from the start.

He talked about policy more than politics and was too direct and progressive for the DNC and too substantial for the MSM, and that’s why I always doubted he’d get to make his mark.

He deserves a high office that he can really exercise. VP would be good, or anything that involves domestic policies (Labor? Justice?).

  53. gus smith says:

To VA Voter: perhaps there is concern about socialism but there is a more immediate concern. The US is losing on every front in core issues. Socialism is the least of our worries as the ship gets righted. I don’t believe that Hillary (bill) or McCain has at heart the concern to address the corporate interests that are subverting everything for their own self-interest. You can’t keep two ends of the line strong with no inner support, meaning the average American. Sigh..

    Let’s go with this instead:

    I agree. Two suggestions:

    1) All Primaries should be held on the same day.

    2) Set a system of rotation in which four states are scheduled to vote two weeks before everyone else votes. The four early states would rotate so that every 12 elections or so, the states would have their “early advantage”.

This would ensure that no state retains a permenant advantage over any others.

  94. JMOHR says:

John Edwards could never win. The financial interests in this country want the right sort of candidate. A candidate the understands the way things work and will suck at the teat of corporate money so necessary to play a part in our national politics. I am reminded of the movie NETWORK:T

here is no America. There is no democracy. There is only IBM, and ITT, and AT and T, and DuPont, Dow, Union Carbide, and Exxon – those are the nations of the world today. What do you think the Russians talk about in their councils of state – Karl Marx? They get out their linear programming charts, statistical decision theories and mini-max solutions and compute the price-cost probabilities of their transactions and investments just like we do. We no longer live in a world of nations and ideologies, Mr. Beale. The world is a college of corporations, inexorably determined by the immutable by-laws of business. The world is a business, Mr. Beale. It has been since man crawled out of the slime, and our children will live, Mr. Beale, to see that perfect world in which there’s no war or famine, oppression or brutality. One vast and ecumenical holding company, for whom all men will work to serve a common profit, in which all men will hold a share of stock, all necessities provided, all anxieties tranquilized, all boredom amused. And I have chosen you to preach this evangel, Mr. Beale.

John Edwards was a populist. He placed the interest of the individual over that of property, the business or profit. However, such a voice will never be heard long in this country. The revised bankruptcy law provided the basis to create long term, indentured servitude to those who fall behind and seek its protection, something Edwards would have fought. Stagnant and falling wages for the vast majority, increased concentration of wealth and the diminishment or end of the social safety net will economically slave many. It is the end of the individual as Mr. Beale learned and as John Edwards now confronts:

It’s the individual that’s finished. It’s the single, solitary human being that’s finished. It’s every single one of you out there that’s finished. Because this is no longer a nation of independent individuals. It’s a nation of some two hundred odd million transistorized, deodorized, whiter-than-white, steel-belted bodies, totally unnecessary as human beings and as replaceable as piston rods. Well, the time has come to say, ‘Is dehumanization such a bad word?’ Because good or bad, that’s what is so. The whole world is becoming humanoid, creatures that look human but aren’t. The whole world, not just us. We’re just the most advanced country, so we’re getting there first. The whole world’s people are becoming mass-produced, programmed, numbered, insensate things…

The lack of Congressional endorsements for Edwards was very telling to me. He did want change. He wanted to fix our broken America.

  127. tarazan says:

The whole primary and cacaus system should be replaced by one day vote for all states. We must make sure also that vote it is done in a day when everybody has a day off.

    2. No manipulation by daily polls.

    3. A big cut on elections spending.

    4. Fairness to all states, and candidates.

Why the media likes this system:
because they can manipulate our thinking; the primaries attract viewers.
and they can push the candidates they like on us…
Our whole election system needs fixing, so people can be truly represented, and not just the few and the elite.

The Big Money/MSM cabal must certainly be high-fiving this morning, having again received proof positive that they control the destiny of this country, ensuring continued corporate profits, at the expense of the lower and middle classes.

No one, absolutely no one, can survive the process of running for president without first selling their soul to these king-makers, and must convince them that they will continue to place corporate profits above all else. Big Money/MSM choses the survivors in both parties, by refusing to provide coverage for those who might serve as a voice for the working class in this country and when they do provide coverage, it will surely be negative (i.e., criticism for running after the return of Elizabeth’s cancer; being labeled derisively as a wealthy trial lawyer, although several candidates had incomes last year that dwarfed John’s; being referred to as a “Breck girl; etc.). Yes, they can all rest easy — all remaining candidates will do their best to protect the status quo and meaningful change for the better will not occur.

An apt analogy would be that of the promoters for pro wrestling matches, who continually assess profits resulting from various outcomes, and who decide, prior to each match, who the “winner” will be. Politics in this country has truly sunk to that level.

Think it’s always been this way? According to the account of the 1980 election, as described on the wikipedia website, “Under federal election laws, Carter and Reagan received $29 million each, and Anderson $18.5 million. They were not allowed to spend any other money. ” Repeat — “They were not allowed to spend any other money.”

  153. JMOHR says:

It would have been nice to have an Edwards/Obama ticket. Edwards had the definite advantage as the populist voice, one for which I think the country would follow. Obama is still somewhat unknown and untested. (Edwards did serve his term in the Senate but also went through the campaign with Kerry) Obama would then have been prepared as the successor after Edwards two terms. Hillary is just too tied to the corporate side.

  154. Democrat Soldier says:

For those that planned on voting (or already voted) for Sen. Edwards, will you support the candidate that eventually wins the Democratic Nomination?

I just wonder if the Sen. Edwards supporters will vote Democratic, or stay home and not vote at all.

Another interesting question will be who will actually win the nomination. The last time a “dark horse” candidate won the Democratic Nomination was in 1924 where John Davis was chosen. He lost to Calvin Coolidge. If the first vote of the convention doesn’t find a clear winner (2025 votes) then the delegates can vote for anyone they want! The only “mandated” vote for promised delegates is the first vote!

  155. jpoke42 says:

The MSM drummed out Dean (the only truly anti-war candidate at the time) because of his entusiasm. They have now knocked off Edwards. Edwards was the only one to win hands-down against ANY of the Repubs – why was this monumental fact glossed over????

This is a very sad day indeed. I am begining to get the same feeling I had when Bush won in 2004 – sick and sinking.

BTW- the only explanation for Edwards dropping out before super tuesday is to help Obama beat Clinton. He won’t go for VP, with his wife’s cancer, he will drop out of the public eye completely.

Good Job America – Populism is DEAD!

  156. ForeverDem says:

Where will the Edwards supporters go now that he will drop out of the race? My guess is they will split between Barack and Hillary…but who knows?

Here is the question though? … What would be the PERFECT JOB for John Edwards in a Democratic Administration…regardless if Obama or Clinton wins?

Here’s my answer: JOHN EDWARDS would be the BEST ATTORNEY GENERAL in the history of the US!!!

    Jpoke,

I loved the peace and prosperity of the 1990’s/Clinton years.

  160. Nick says:

But hey…does the idea of Edwards as AG make anybody else giddy? We could have some…dare I say…OVERSIGHT!!!!!!

I do think, though, that most people who would vote for Clinton are voting for Clinton, and that this will benefit Obama, which is also happy-town. I would have preferred Edwards, but within our political reality, having only one person against Hillary is best, especially if we can get him as AG.

    katy,

You didn’t see Ed Schultz’s interview on C-Span when he announced that he was hired to host his new radio show. Ed Schultz admitted that he IS a Republican. I know this is a shock but facts are facts. Ed Schultz is a Ronald Reagan Republican.

Ed Schultz said that he supported Ronald Reagan. Didn’t you know that Ed Schultz is a Republican?

There must be at least one person on this planet who qualifies. Wouldn’t you think?

    Also from the Amato post:

“John Edwards has done a good job of articulating his populist positions and had attracted a large number of voters, (not enough to stay in the race) none of whom made their choice because a “woman” or a “black” is in the field.”

Of course, the truth lies between the left and right points of view. Edwards obviously has a large constituency that supports him for his positions. It is not true that “none” of his supporters made their choice because they didn’t want to vote for a black person or a woman. There are still a fair number of staunch Democrats, mostly older and/or lower income people, who have such reservations. ;)

    DRxJ,

Yes, I agree with you. It was obvious once Edwards did not win Iowa that he was not going to win anywhere and certainly had zero chance to win the nomination. That is why I was so surprised when I saw theseEdwards fanatics begin lambasting me for making that analysis. They foolishly believed Edwards had a shot after his disastrous showing in Iowa.

As for the trade, I am ecstatic! Johan Santana is a Met!!!!! (Of course, I have the natural caution of a Mets fan who has seen many great, “sure-fire” players collapse once they put on a Mets uniform — Carlos Baerga and Roberto Alomar anyone???)

    ENOUGH!

delafield, I don’t know who you are, but I do know Ed Shultz. I went to college with him. He was the quarterback on our football team.

You are full of crap here. Up to your eyeballs.

Ed was a Rightie at one time in his life. That’s why we didn’t hit it off in school. He had an epiphany when he met his wife, Wendy. She’s a Psych Nurse, who took him to a homeless shelter for bologna sandwiches to show him the ‘other side’. He had an awakening.

Get your facts straight, please. You sound an awful lot like one of those insipid ‘Concern Trolls’ who lurk just to spiel contrary comments and redirect threads.

Ed was a big supporter of Hillary until she showed her corporate allegiances. He turned on her about the same time I did.

I’m proud Ed found his true calling. Quit making shit up & hoping it will stick…you’re not dealing with Republics here.

  179. Zimzone says:

This is the same delafield who claimed Hillary will ask Edwards to be AG…just say’n…

  180. RJ2008 says:

John Edwards: In His Own Words

Last year ago, around the sixth anniversary of 9/11, a leading presidential candidate held a fundraiser that was billed as a Homeland Security themed event in Washington, D.C. targeted to homeland security lobbyists and contractors for $1000 a plate. These lobbyists, for the price of a ticket, would get a special “treat”—the opportunity to participate in small, hour long breakout sessions with key Democratic lawmakers, many of whom chair important sub committees of homeland security committee. That candidate was Senator Clinton.

Today, Hillary Clinton has taken more money from Washington lobbyists than any candidate from either party – Democratic or Republican.

She has taken more money from the defense industry, more money from Wall Street than any other candidate from either party as well.

We have a duty– a duty to end this.

I believe you cannot be for change and take money from the lobbyists who prevent change. You cannot take on the entrenched interests in Washington if you choose to defend the broken system. It will not work.

I have learned there are much more important things in life than winning elections at the cost of selling your soul.

It’s time to tell the truth. And the truth is the system in Washington is corrupt. It is rigged by the powerful special interests to benefit they very few at the expense of the many.

And as a result, the American people have lost faith in our broken system in Washington, and believe it no longer works for ordinary Americans. They’re right.

If protecting the current established structure in Washington is in your interest, then I am not your candidate.

This corruption did not begin yesterday– and it did not even begin with George Bush– it has been building for decades– until it now threatens literally the life of our democracy.

Down one path, we trade corporate Democrats for corporate Republicans; our cronies for their cronies; one political dynasty for another dynasty; and all we are left with is a Democratic version of the Republican corruption machine.

And Americans are kept in the dark because the corporate lobbyists have pushed back country of origin labeling laws again and again.

Senator Clinton’s road to the middle class takes a major detour right through the deep canyon of corporate lobbyists and the hidden bidding of K Street in Washington– and history tells us that when that bus stops there it is the middle class that loses.

We can liberate our government from the shackles of corporate money that bind it to corporate will, and restore the voices of our people to its halls.

It is incredible what America has accomplished. Because no matter what extraordinary challenges we have been faced with, we did exactly what America has always done in our history– we rose to the challenge.

  181. had enough says:

Is MSM picking our candidate? Why didn’t Edwards wait until after Feb. 5th?
From what I have heard, Edwards has been talking to Obama…. maybe a strong ticket will happen.

  182. curmudgeon says:

Are some of perhaps making the same mistake with Herr Schumer that has been made with the Bubble Boy — that is, framing his actions as negligent rather than willful? After all, negligent homicide typically results in a much milder sentence than premeditated murder.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt provided us with a blueprint many years ago to use as a template for understanding such situations when he stated…

“In politics, nothing happens by accident. If it happened, you can bet it was planned that way.”

but schultz has always been upfront about his political leanings, past
and present… the more people listen to him, i think they’d find that he represents them more than they thought, or wanted to admit…

i gave that one several links – aka homework – that spelled it all out and made it obvious that i knew all about ed’s story…

  185. hauksdottir says:

So the damned corporations with their celebrity framing have already chosen our candidates?

Why start campaigning so early, only to drop out before the primaries? Talk about squandering money!!!

Isn’t it more important to have enough money to get through the Super-Tuesday events than to have a handful of states making their choice and everybody else in the country left in the cold!!!!!

The only people to benefit from this are the big media corporations. We the People lose and lose again.

Instead of disenfranchising states that jump the gun, or giving delegates to a candidate who breaks her promise, why don’t we simply enact a new law: all primaries and caucuses will take place on a single day. Since airwaves are not blocked by state lines, let candidates spend money in whatever markets they wish when they wish, but all voting gets done on one day. Period.

No winnowing. No going with whomever has momentum. Just a pure choice based upon issues.

    A single day.

This Edwards supporter certainly will. There’s no way in hell I’d vote to put another Republican in the White House.

And I think Edwards would make a great Attorney General. Wouldn’t it be nice to have an AG who believes in the constitution?

  187. curmudgeon says:

Although many are obviously fans of Ed Schultz, this writer has become increasingly disenchanted with him over the past couple of years. I listen occasionally just to get an sense about the mainstream news media take on issues.

Schultz seems to derive most of his information from mainstream news sources, which leaves him clueless regarding much that occurs in this country, but is only reported by overseas news organizations. He obviously does not have the sense of history and its application in the present that Thom Hartmann does. And his treatment of callers who disagree with him is deplorable, reminiscent of Bill O’Reilly, and surprisingly, Mike Malloy actually treats callers presenting opposing viewpoints with far more respect.

I’ve seen Ed in person twice, and during the most recent event, he presented as a Republican running for office (he’d previously considered running for office in North Dakota). He was loudly booed during an appearance in Seattle ( http://www.am1090seattle.com/pages/582254.php ) for statements that insulted many of the progressive in the audience.

For more information, the wikipedia website provides some interesting background information. It does appear that he may have a bit of a problem with his temper. For more details, please see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ed_Schultz
