Discussing last night’s GOP debate on his radio show today, Glenn Beck and fill-in host Pat Gray mocked Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) by derisively calling him “Juan McCain.” Beck, who considers McCain’s sponsorship of a comprehensive immigration bill and the Mexican background of his national director of Hispanic outreach to be “an audacious slap in the face to the American people,” proudly advertised the segment in his daily e-mail to listeners today:

During the segment, Beck also commented on a new campaign by the National Council of La Raza that targets him and Lou Dobbs for their rhetoric, which La Raza believes “demonizes immigrants and Hispanic Americans.” Beck suggested that La Raza’s campaign to get him off the air “before the election” may be “connected” to McCain. Listen to the segment:
La Raza isn’t the only group that doesn’t appreciate Beck’s brand of Latino-phobic humor. On the conservative community blog RedState.com today, Leon H. Wolf posted a message to “commenters,” that it is “not fine, okay, or within the bounds of the rules” to “use Latino names as an insult.” Wolf says users will be “banned for doing it” at Red State:
What is not fine, okay, or within the bounds of the rules, is to use Latino names as an insult. We are speaking, specifically, of “Jorge Arbusto” and “Juan McCain,” although it’s certainly possible that others are floating out there or may yet be invented. Allow me to clue anyone who thinks these names are funny or clever in to something: racism isn’t clever or funny. If you think you’ve really zinged someone by calling them by a Latino name, that’s a pretty reliable (nearly infallible, in fact) indicator that you don’t like Latino people.
Since he can’t help showing his “disdain for Latino people,” CNN host Glenn Beck would apparently be banned from posting on one of the top conservative blogs.
UPDATE: On Beck’s CNN Headline News show last night, Minuteman founder Jim Gilchrist compared La Raza to the KKK while smearing the Anti-Defamation League and the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Who’s this “Glenn Beck”???
January 31st, 2008 at 9:02 pmThe insanity of the right wing just explodes when they start losing control. They are just now beginning to relize that they are the dinosaurs and that the American people are one big-ass comet heading their way.
January 31st, 2008 at 9:08 pmGlenn Beck is a psychopath. It’s quite terrifying that CNN allow him to have his own show. And the republican race baiting of ‘Islamofacism’ made them sound like they were trying to become fuhrer rather than President.
January 31st, 2008 at 9:08 pmGlenn Beck is an a**hole.

Based on the ratings for his cable show, it’s a very small group of people.
Thankfully.
January 31st, 2008 at 9:19 pmWhy does this guy even have a show?
His TV show is a pathetic disaster that should be canceled before it brings down the rest of the network.
Glenn Beck’s Ratings: Headline Snooze
January 31st, 2008 at 9:31 pmI suspect that the right wingnut punditocracy is trying to win McDrain the Hispanic and Independent vote by trashing him now. Later, after he wins the primary, they’ll be touting what a moderate he is. It’s the only way a Reptilescum can win the general election by painting their candidate as a non-Republican.
January 31st, 2008 at 9:35 pmYou might have a point there, Snowball.

Glenn Beck’s Ratings: Headline Snooze
“So what is CNN waiting for? Are they masochistic gluttons for punishment who get pleasure from losing? Are they married to the repulsive and repudiated ideology spewed by Beck? Are they frightened, ineffectual, corporate bootlickers who couldn’t make a proper programming decision without a sackful of surveys and permission from their supervisor? It is just this simple: There is no business case for keeping Beck on the air.â€
Comment by Mark @ News Corpse — January 31, 2008 @ 9:31 pm
It’s not about the ratings, it’s about right wing corporate propaganda. Beck is cheaper than buying campaign ads.

January 31st, 2008 at 9:38 pmWhat Matt from ThinkProgress forgot to mention is that the issue isn’t that McCain’s staff member has a “Mexican background”.
The issue is that McCain’s staff member is a former cabinet-level official with the Mexican government.
Why didn’t Matt include that vital piece of information? Can you trust what Matt writes here in the future?

Uh, quite frankly, your comment doesn’t make any sense.
Why would the prior job of the staff member matter, in light of Beck’s racist comments?
Think, man… the thread is about Beck’s behavior, not the staff member’s employment history.

Thx Joe =]
January 31st, 2008 at 9:53 pmBeck is getting desperate so he’s taken a page out of Ann Coulter’s playbook. Since everyone is ignoring him (witness his low ratings), he poops out another outrageous comment and waits for everyone to react to his perfectly-formed turd.
This seems to be happening in every corner of rant-radioland. Both Limpballs and Little Seanie Insanity are jumping the shark these days, too. They see their influence in polarizing the country is slipping away and they are twisting slowly in the wind.
It isn’t a pretty sight but it sure is enjoyable to watch. They are bleeding slowly so it will take a few more months for them to expire. Then we will all be able to go about the business of working together to overcome the damage that GDumbya, Darth Cheney and they have inflicted on this once-great nation.
January 31st, 2008 at 9:53 pmThat particular fact is also irrelevant on this thread, Xisithrus.
This is about Beck’s racist name-calling, not the employment history of McCain’s staffer.
OMG, it’s a strawman!
January 31st, 2008 at 9:54 pmC’mon, everybody, have some sympathy for Beck. Hemorrhoids are a very painful condition, they’ve obviously grown to the size of grapefruit on Glenn. I wouldn’t be able to think straight in that condition, either.

Can I blame all three? They all seem to be working together and enabling one another.
While I’m at it, can I blame McCain for not having a coherent position on a single issue, other than the war in Iraq? And can I respectfully disagree with McCain’s position that leaving U.S. troops in Iraq for “a hundred years” is wise foreign policy?

January 31st, 2008 at 10:34 pmI see you are also an a$$ hole. Rare these days.
USA Patriot-if you really don’t understand why it’s dismissive to refer to Sen. McCain as Juan, you’re just being obstinate. You know that Beck doesn’t like any sort of compassion towards Latinos and so he and his dittoheads like to refer to the Sen. that way. Now most of us here probably don’t agree with the Sen. on a lot of things, but it shouldn’t be difficult to show some respect.
January 31st, 2008 at 10:35 pmOnly because you disingenously claim ignorance. If you were only honest enough to admit your party’s vicious, un-issues-related attacks, at least you could be respected for being honest but you claim ignorance.
January 31st, 2008 at 10:40 pmLearn to read……like I said, I guess I have to say this again. Read slowly if it’s hard to comprehend a series of ideas consecutively: I said if you weren’t condemning the comments of Beck and his waterboy, you are implicitly endorsing them. Dope.

Try talking about them instead of to them. It’s a lot more fun and it doesn’t validate their existence by recognizing them as worthily of talking to directly. When you engage with them personally, you are just giving them what they are looking for, personal validation.
February 1st, 2008 at 12:47 amI am placing a bet that if John McCain gets the Republican nomination, he will change his tune about immigration. He will “see the light” and come to realize that we have to do something about the scourge of “illegal immigration” and build a fence along the entire border with Mexico.
Having anything other than a staunch anti immigrant stand in the Republican party will be suicide in the general election.
February 1st, 2008 at 12:49 amI wonder if RedState will crack down on insults against Iraqis or Iranians now?
February 1st, 2008 at 1:43 amWhat is not fine, okay, or within the bounds of the rules, is to use Latino names as an insult.
What about other ethnic slurs?
February 1st, 2008 at 6:32 amThe Mittster’s father, George, was a Mexican born in Chihuahua. He probably didn’t even have the right to run for President. From Wiki,
“Romney was born in Colonia Dublán, Galeana, in the Mexican state of Chihuahua to Gaskell Romney (1871-1955), born of English grandparents, and wife Anna Amelia Pratt (1876-1926), born to an American father and a German mother. Romney’s grandparents were polygamous Mormons who fled the United States because the federal government was hunting down polygamists.”
Notice the international pedigree of Mittster.
However, father George apparently was not a wingnut wanker like Mittster. “As Governor, Romney’s managerial expertise stood him in good stead. He reduced the state deficit by imposing new taxes and promoted progressive policies especially in the field of civil rights.”
Can anyone imagine a Rethuglican doing that today?
February 1st, 2008 at 6:54 amI also found out by reading here and elsewhere that John McCain was born in the Panama Canal Zone, which was recognized as Panameen territory back in a treaty of 1936. So is McCain a native-born American who is eligible to be president? The Canal Zone was not sovereign American territory.
February 1st, 2008 at 7:48 amIf Mittens wasn’t born in the United States, how can he run for president?

February 1st, 2008 at 2:23 pmI can’t say anything bad about Glenn Beck. He’s a little upset because some in government and in the world of the elite and corporations want to turn America into a region instead of a country and illegal immigration and amnesty will help to complete the transformation of our country.
Calling John McCain Juan hardly amounts to “hate speech” although it is a little childish. I understand completely where it’s coming from. McCain is one my senators and he, just as our Congress, ignores what the people want and does just as he pleases.
Janet Murguia of La Raza is pushing the “hate speech” propganda button right now. Funny — but the slogan for La Raza is “Por la raza todo; furera de la raza nada. It means for the people (Hispanic people) everything; outside the race nothing.
February 5th, 2008 at 12:41 pmUh call me crazy but doesn’t Glenn have as much right to say what he thinks as you do? Even if you don’t like what a person has to say they have a right to say it. At least that was the way it was last time I checked the Bill of Rights.
