Hume laughs at idea of Americans being beheaded.

During the “Political Grapevine” segment of Fox News’s Special Report last night, host Brit Hume noted the negative criticism that the town of Brattleboro, VT has received for a petition calling for President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney to be arrested. Chuckling so much he could hardly contain himself, Hume recounts how “one caller from Minnesota” told the town clerk “he’d like to see terrorists cut off the heads of town officials.” Watch it:

    Comment by CaptainMantastic — January 31, 2008 @ 3:13 pm

Very true. However, there’s also the element of good taste. One does not make jokes on television about people dying — as John Gibson found out in the wake of Heath Ledger’s death. Many people find that offensive, and rightly so.

I wonder what Hume’s reaction would have been if the Brattleboro town council had called for Bush and Cheney to be beheaded, instead of impeached. Would he have “chuckled so much he could barely contain himself”?

No, my guess is that he would have condemned Brattleboro for such an outrageous petition. And I would have joined him in that condemnation if that was the case. Calling for somebody to be killed isn’t funny, even if it’s someone you’re not particularly fond of.

He said it twice, then they tried to make up a story about the school having a video lead from the twin towers….not possible unless they knew ahead of time. And Bush was in his limo watching it, which means he knew about it all along, that is why he just sat there waiting for the second plane to hit.

But if any reporter digs into this, they had better not open their mail for awhile, because they will send them a little Anthrax just like before.

It is crazy, but not necessarily “laughable”.

At any rate, Hume is a “news” network anchor, not the host of a comedy show. Perhaps if he finds an item ridiculous, he should make clear the object of his ridicule.

As I pointed out above, given Hume’s (and his network’s) demonstrated political bent, it is at least as likely that the object of his ridicule was the small-town assembly in Brattleboro, and that he appreciated the opportunity to repeat the words of an anonymous caller, saving himself the responsibility of saying it himself.

    But…
the bombing at Oklahoma City was unforgivable, and to project blame on Clinton is also unforgivable, as well as immature, and really shows disrespect for any human life. These are the same people that feel the Iraqi civilians are some how inferior to Americans. And these type of people I will not tread lightly. I will call them out, each and every time.

no you moron, its the formula that is part of what offends…..
repubs like hume win by using a formula.

    1. attack
    2. render irrelivant
    3. slander and besmirch

    the key is #2.

  93. shoeless says:

Maybe we’re all taking ourselves a little too seriously. And maybe Humes bemusement hit too close to home.

So, this is how you wingnuts talk to yourselves? Are you sure it isn’t your dogs talking to you?

I would like to offer this as a definition as laughable:

    absurd: incongruous;inviting ridicule

    Comment by CaptainMantastic — January 31, 2008 @ 4:18 pm

Fine, Cap’n, but if that’s the definition with which you were working, why use it to justify Hume’s actual laughter?

    Comment by CaptainMantastic

Here is why it’s a serious threat, pal. One media personality’s joke or inflammatory remark makes it ok for some deranged loon to act.

GW (and Condi) had advance knowledge of 911 and it still happened. How’s that?

Giving “no-bid” contracts to Halliburton, or losing track of 100K plus weapons in Iraq, is wasting taxpayer money.

    SORRY! Big difference.

Cross burning is meant to terrorize a select group of people.

    NOT free speech.

I know that requires some “thinking” on yer part, and it’ll make yer head hurt, but hey, you’ll feel better in the morning.

But shouting “Fire” in a crowded theater is not. Brit Hume has a national audience for his comments. He’s also being broadcast over airwaves that are regulated by Federal law. Huge difference between flag burning and comments like the one Brit made.

The US flag stands as a symbol of free speech.
