Yesterday, ABC News’ Jake Tapper misrepresented a quote by Bill Clinton to suggest that the former president believes “we have to slow down the economy” to address global warming. In fact, Clinton said just the opposite. On Fox News today, when asked about the ABC piece, conservative columnist Charles Krauthammer correctly noted that Clinton had been quoted out of context. But while Krauthammer was speaking, Fox ran a chyron falsely claiming that Clinton said we “must slow economy” to “cut greenhouse gas emissions.” Watch it:
UPDATE: This morning, Rush Limbaugh peddled the false ABC story, insisting that Clinton “suggested we deliberately hamper our economic standing in the world and cripple our economy for the sake of appeasing an unproven, scientifically flawed theory that has no basis in fact.”
You mean FOX lied? How unusual…
February 1st, 2008 at 10:51 amDoes the chyron trump the conservative guest, or vice versa?

February 1st, 2008 at 10:55 amWow, Fox is more mendacious than Krauthammer? They really have jumped the shark.

I believe you hit it right on the head, katy. With the volume down or off, all you see is the chyron. To give credit where it is due, I applaud Krauthammer for conveying that the line was taken out of context. That didn’t stop E.D. Hill from having a different guest on previously who ran with the deception and started singing the imaginary benefits of free market capitalism. (He said it was good that our grandchildren would be able to make money off this…”so-called problem”. I wrote about it on my blog.)
February 1st, 2008 at 11:04 amFox News and other broadcast outlets (and print media too for that matter) lie continually without any accountability. They either do it outright, or they report incorrect information because they’re too lazy to check anything out.
So why the lack of accountability? We have libel laws, but I have yet to see any candidate from either party sue a medium for libel. We can see how blatantly false information regarding a candidate or how misquoting a candidate can affect the vote, so if a candidate (or Bill Clinton, who was speaking on behalf of a candidate) is misquoted, a libel suit is an option.
I’d like to see that happen. Anything to keep the news outlets honest without restricting freedom of the press.
February 1st, 2008 at 11:05 amThere is no surprise there that Fox twisted the facts…
February 1st, 2008 at 11:11 amThat’s what they do all day at Fox,anyway.
And this Neocon Kloth hammer is no different than any other Fox news misinformation talking head.
Fox doesn’t even pretend to have credibility any more. The ratings are sinking like a stone. The only remaining audience members are Republican politicians and brain dead kool aid drinkers.

February 1st, 2008 at 11:44 amYes, FOX is disgusting. But unfortunately, there are Bill and Hillary Clinton haters everywhere. Many of them post on Think Progress.
Beware if you support the Clintons. You will be demonized by many, even here. These are very, very sad times for Liberal Democrats.

First order of business for new president:
February 1st, 2008 at 12:11 pmCancel Daryll’s gummint contracts and let him live off his gold bullion.
I’m sure it’ll make great soup.
Darryl confuses “Euros and bullion” w/ “bottles and cans”.
He’s a hundredaire!
February 1st, 2008 at 12:17 pmDon’t listen to what Krauthummer has to tell.

I guess we can forget that whole stupid “Lay not up treasures on earth” nonsense, right Daryll? I mean, what kind of idiot would believe something as moronic as that?
February 1st, 2008 at 12:24 pmThe really bizarre thing about Daryll’s comment isn’t his blatant greed or his clumsy sarcasm.
It’s that he found this thread, which explained the distortion, Faux’s prepetuation of it, and a hard-core right-wing pundit noting that it was taken out of context (in other words, a lie) and Daryll chose to stick with the lie.
In the face of evidence that he was embracing a false witness, he stuck with it.
Daryll’s gone bye-bye.
Not that it was that long a trip for him.
February 1st, 2008 at 12:29 pmFck Daryll. Don’t let that Jesus freak take over another thread please. Ignore the freakshow.

Nice strawman – did you get that for Christmas?
It’s not about loving money, it’s about following a direct order from God. If you are putting aside any money, you are disobeying God. Or don’t you believe that God will provide? Looks like your faith is pretty shaky…
February 1st, 2008 at 12:42 pmI thank Bill Clinton for his comment.

I mean, besides the normal ones that lead to someone becoming a right-winger…
February 1st, 2008 at 1:05 pmTaken in context, Clinton clearly said that his first choice was to slow down the economy to slow global warming, but that we couldn’t do that because other countries wouldn’t go along. So, his reluctant fall back plan was to supposedly grow the “Green Economy.†Maybe Bill should just shut up and let Hillary lose this one on her own. She seems to be doing just fine at that.
Comment by goon_golly — February 1, 2008 @ 12:46 pm
Maybe. Or maybe you could learn to read.
February 1st, 2008 at 1:39 pmAbsolutely, Dr. Matt. here’s the TRUE money quote:
The only way we can do this is if we get back in the world’s fight against global warming and prove it is good economics that we will create more jobs to build a sustainable economy that saves the planet for our children and grandchildren. It is the only way it will work.
This episode really proves how eager some (most?) on the Right to distort, even to lie, to make Clenis look bad.
Krauthammer and a few others, it should be noted, deserve credit for acknowledging the lie.
February 1st, 2008 at 1:39 pmSo why the lack of accountability? We have libel laws, but I have yet to see any candidate from either party sue a medium for libel. We can see how blatantly false information regarding a candidate or how misquoting a candidate can affect the vote, so if a candidate (or Bill Clinton, who was speaking on behalf of a candidate) is misquoted, a libel suit is an option.
Comment by missmolly — February 1, 2008 @ 11:05 am
As a public figure, a candidate or an ex-President has little if any legal recourse to sue the news media for libel. A public figure has to prove not only that the statement is false and defamatory, but also that it was made with “actual malice” – in other words, deliberately published by a media outlet that knew the information was untrue, or had a “reckless disregard for the truth.”
Libel also does not usually cover statements of opinion or comments on a matter of public interest – it’s very difficult to prove legally that someone’s opinions are false.
Finally, public figures don’t often sue the media because they depend on the media. If Clinton were to sue Fox or CNN or any other network for libel, he’d find a lot of closed doors the next time he wants to do the talk-show circuit for a new book.

The link that TP thoughtfully embedded in their update goes to a “Members Only” page from LimpBall’s web site.
So I’m guessing that he posted the story on the web, as opposed to belching it up over the public airwaves.
Just a thought.
