After crossing the picket line to appear on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno last night, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) took a moment to repeatedly declare that the U.S. is “winning” in Iraq:
We’re not gonna let them get defeated. We’re not gonna have them surrender. And they’re gonna win. And by golly, they are winning, my friends. They are winning. They are winning.
Hours later, two female suicide bombers in Baghdad set off explosions that killed at least 64 people, “the most lethal blasts since August 1.”
By Golly, you’re wrong, wrong, wrong.
Now cue golly garsh gushing over McCain using his name…
February 1st, 2008 at 12:22 pmI can’t watch the Tonight Show when people I don’t despise are the guests.
February 1st, 2008 at 12:23 pmI’m sure Leno was obsequiousness itself and the APPLAUSE sign was working overtime for McCain’s delusional spew.
this is going to be too easy.
just let mccain talk and talk and talk
the more he talks, the more he discredits not only himself….but the whole GOP
the democrats should send FLip FLop say anything McCain a big “THANKYOU”
February 1st, 2008 at 12:23 pmDid anyone else find Guilliani and McCain hugging Jay Leno hilarious? He’s talking about killing people on a large scale and then he and his side-kick hug Leno. Also, his mention of the Manchurian Candidate was so frigging scary.
February 1st, 2008 at 12:27 pmDid McCain happen to mention what “winning” means? I have yet to hear anybody on the right explain what victory is going to look like, but I hear an awful lot about “winning”, “our enemies”, “emboldening our enemies”, and other soundbite terms that really have no meaning.

February 1st, 2008 at 12:36 pmNOBODY, Puke or Dim, can or will end the occupation of Iraq as long as there are ‘real-politik’ considerations in play in the trans-Caspian, under which apparently sloshes the largest, mostly undeveloped pool of petro-chemical resources in the world.
February 1st, 2008 at 12:38 pmSo the question has to become: Is it (”occupation”) a bug or a feature? McStain’s opting for the latter stance: that it’s gonna redound in “our” favor if we joyfully persevere and spend more lives and treasure to ‘bring democracy to the Middle East.”
We’re “winning” as long as we’re there. “We” only lose by leaving. This has been the Bushevik mantra the whole time. It’s NOT been discredited–except by the facts; but when was that ever a bar to ambition?
Bush’s sponsored crap back in 2000 about McCain being mentally unstable was apparently close to the mark, though purely by accident ( Rove didn;t mean it, it was just an expedient turd of a notion he threw out there)
If Mccain really believes what he says about Iraq, he is insane. If he doesn;t reallly believe it but expects a politically mixed TV audience to believe it, he is insane.
If he doesn’t think he won’t get busted for pandering to the 28 per-centers, he’s insane.
If he KNows he’ll get busted but just doesn’t care, he’s insane.

If he were to somehow get elected, I don’t think I could spend the next 4 years listening to him saying “my friends”. I think I would slit my wrists. Does he think this makes him sound like a regular guy or something. He addressed the American public as “my friends” something like 16 times in the short speech he made after winning his first primary.

So much for the whole “deriving power by the consent of the governed” thing.
Seriously - what’s wrong with politicians changing stances when the people want a change in policy? Isn’t that the letter and spirit of democracy?
February 1st, 2008 at 1:23 pm!9… actually you’ve misrepresented republicans. They don’t lead, but rather they are PUSHED by lobbyists, donors, corporations, etc. Are you actually going to defend out current President as a “leader”? As for democrats… What exactly is wrong with doing what the majority of the public wants? Isn’t that the basis for Democracy? Now, given that we do NOT have a “Democracy” in this country (it’s representative Democracy, afterall), we certainly expect our elected representatives to be better informed than the public, but still take into consideration the desires of the people.
February 1st, 2008 at 1:24 pmMy my, GiGi is on a roll today. She thinks that Democrats are changing their positions according to which way the winds blow. I guess she missed all the times that McCain has changed his views and the many more times Romney has changed his views.
Oh well, when you are an ignorant tool, you will believe anything your authority figures tell you. It’s too much work to actually think for yourself.
For GiGi’s education, here is a list of the issues McCain has flip-flopped on:
http://www.thecarpetbaggerreport.com/archives/9111.html
I’m sure I could find a similar list of Romney’s flip-flops but I don’t have the time right now.
Perhaps GiGi would like to come up with a list of the issues that either Clinton or Obama have flip-flopped on.
February 1st, 2008 at 1:27 pmAs pathetic as this fool sounds, polls currently show him beating both Clinton and Obama head to head in the Presidential Election.

National polls at this time mean absolutely nothing. They have had Clinton beating Obama for months. But once Obama gets out there and people start seeing what he stands for, guess what, national polls now are almost neck and neck.
National polls also say that more Americans would vote for an anonymous Democrat than an anonymous Republican.
So, I’ll just wait and see what happens when we have two candidates and their stand on issues becomes better known to the public.
BTW, anyone want to bet that McCain has a “come to Jesus” moment if he is the candidate and changes his views on immigration?
February 1st, 2008 at 1:31 pmMcCain is a psycho has-been, and anyone who lines up to vote for his crazy old ass ought to be referred for a mental-health checkup.
Republicans and Conservatives are invariably, pathologically, wrong. Always have been, and their record speaks for itself. What a wanton waste of civil resources, and for how pathetically long now!?!?!?

February 1st, 2008 at 2:26 pmThe fact is after 5 years in these two wars we are still sending young men to fight in Iraq and Afghanstan.
We have more troops now than ever before in Iraq and Afghanstan.
If McCain is right, then what we will be doing now is the opposite, and that’s bringing the troops home. That’s not it’s happening.
Of Course McCain who claimed to be the next war/wars president when elected is painting a rosey picture, instead; a picture he, Giuliani and his buddy Joe Lieberman drew that does not match or reflect facts on the ground in either Iraq or Afghanstan.
He himself confessed that more wars are needed…so where is success?
McCain also keeps comparing Iraq to Korea by saying that ‘ we are still in Korea after 55 years..’
But , Mr. McCain: not all nations are the same.
We have tried to do the same in Viet Nam,as we did in Korea, but it did not work, and McCain himself was in Viet Nam war,and he must have heard the same official claims then:’We are winning….in Viet Nam”.
So to compare Iraq or Afghanstan to Korea is nothing but a shallow thinking based on faulty assumptions.

February 1st, 2008 at 2:34 pmYou cant ‘win’ an occupation. You win wars by having an exit plan. You win freedom operations by winning the hearts and the minds of the people.
McCain has no exit strategy and by his own words doesn’t plan to have one during his possible presidency.
February 1st, 2008 at 2:39 pmRealistically, how much longer can the United States sustain a $2billion-a-week/150,000+ troop presence in Iraq?
With a sagging economy and a military with an ever dwindling number of personnel that can be sent overseas, is it even possible to keep the level of troops in Iraq that you had before the escalation? Not to mention the increasing need for more troops in Afghanistan.
This is why the US military leadership in Iraq is cutting deals with the Sunni tribes, and from what I’ve read are trying to get Sadr to keep up his ceasefire. Pretend there’s peace, then leave.

I wish I can answer you ‘why we are still in South Korea’.
But unforunately, I can’t.
I never advocated that we should be in S. Korea.
Simply what I’m saying is McCain gave an exmple of two different countries to make his point about staying in Iraq for a long time..he injected Korea as his example, but in the same time ignoring the fact that the dissimilarities are many between the two countries ,and his example seemed flawed by comparing the two countries.
February 1st, 2008 at 2:49 pmA 10th is expected in March. We are winning on the security part of the equation. It’s the political stalemate, which is directly related to Iraqis being able to provide their own security, that is preventing us from drawing down the number of troops.

“Mentally Retarded Women Used in Bombings
Feb 1 04:02 PM US/Eastern
By STEVEN R. HURST
Associated Press Writer
BAGHDAD (AP) - Two mentally retarded women strapped with remote-control explosives—and possibly used as unwitting suicide bombers—brought carnage Friday to two pet bazaars, killing at 73 people in the deadliest day since Washington flooded the capital with extra troops last spring.
The coordinated blasts—coming 20 minutes apart in different parts of the city—appeared to reinforce U.S. claims al-Qaida in Iraq may be increasingly desperate and running short of able-bodied men willing or available for such missions.”

Bush and Cheney testified together. Why?
Did Cheney drink a glass of water whenever Bush talked?
Also, the independent counsel headed by Kenneth Starr that investigated the Cinton administration cost the American taxpayer $40 million. And lasted around seven years (1994 to 2001)
The total cost of the commission that was to investigate the worst attack on US soil? Just over $3million. And the total amount of time allotted for their investigations? 20 months (Nov ‘02 to July ‘04)

February 1st, 2008 at 4:18 pmI try not to use the phrase “winning,” since I really don’t think there’s a such thing as winning - or losing, for that matter - in Iraq. I know we can use those words loosely, but when you try to be precise it just doesn’t fit.
That said, I think we’re doing important work there and things are improving. Security is much better, although the numbers worsened in January as we increased activity in Mosul. But Anbar and Baghdad are transformed compared to what they once were, and Mosul might follow if we weed out the insurgents there.
I know the end-game is an Iraqi state where political and economic progress/reconciliation are happening, but we have to be patient for that. That day may come (in some respects it is already here). In the meantime, we finally have daylight and direction in Iraq, led by a great general.

February 1st, 2008 at 4:30 pmDRxJ,
Juan and I trade these charges all the time — It is a little exercise in hyperbole in which we engage….
My point is not that I truly believe Juan actually supports such atrocities (at least I hope he doesn’t!) but rather to point out that Juan has selective outrage. He (and others here) get apoplectic that two or three Al Qaeda members had water poured on their face four years ago, but Al Qaeda sending mentally challenged women to blow up innocent men, women, and children at a pet bazaar gets a pass from them — No word of condemnation or disapproval.
The moral relativism is quite frustrating.
As for Mets-Tigers — A very real possibility. The Tigers pulled their own blockbuster deal this off-season. I’d love to see it…..Of course, already other people are saying that this season will see a re-match of the 1986 World Series.

well, Exley, you have no proof whatsoever of the truth of the claims of the women being mentally-challenged, and your little game about having water poured on their faces is the typical coward’s way out; you’d give up all your living relatives after 30 seconds of waterboarding, but so what? it’s all about chimp-worship with you traitors, so you’ll never make any sense or understand any morality. The fact is that there are crazy people over there, who have been unleashed by Bush’s massive failures, who previously had been kept under control. So Al Qaeda fights the 400 billion-dollar American machine any way they can. And the American machine loses, again and again.

and, once again, why was the 9/11 commission unofficial?
because the Republicans could not afford for the truth to be exposed, simple as that.
February 1st, 2008 at 4:36 pmFirst, I’m interested in what your answers would be IF I in fact had been in Iraq. But since I haven’t, I have to base things off what I hear and read, as you or any other would have to do without experiencing the war first-hand. And when I talk to people who have been there, or read about people who have been there, I hear about how security is getting better. Now, it’s never enough to just take someone’s word for it, so I look at the numbers, and the numbers back it up.
And don’t blame those sanctions on anyone but Saddam Hussein. His people didn’t choose to be ruled by a bully, and they certainly didn’t choose for him to brutalize and starve them. If you contrast the oil revenue coming into Iraq before and after the sanctions were implemented, there’s no reason why Hussein shouldn’t have been able to provie better for the Iraqis. But, instead of feeding and sheltering them, he built more palaces. Stop taking the side of a tyrant.
February 1st, 2008 at 4:39 pm#154,
Lefty Patriot, I could emulate your idol Bill Clinton and simply say to you, “I won’t take the bait” since I know you already reoognize the distinction between sending two mentally-challenged women to commit a suicide attack that deliberately targets innocent men, women and children in a civilain markeplace and the highly-targeted use of the most-pinpoint accurate weapons used against military and command-and-control targets after weeks are warning that such attacks were coming.
“Shock-and-awe” was nothing like the bombings of Berlin, Dresden and Tokyp in World War II where there were thousands upon thousands of civilain casualties.
February 1st, 2008 at 4:40 pmFunny, because I thought it was you that was brainwashed, both by the Democrats and the groupthink that goes on at this blog.
Now, if you care to challenge the assertion, you could try using facts and not ad hominem attacks. I argue that there’s direction because we changed the strategy (for instance, we actually “clear, hold and build,” rather than “clear and leave”) and the results support this - declining violence in Anbar and Baghdad, for example. There are a lot of factors for why Iraq has become more secure, and General Petraeus is one of them.
Whoops. Sorry for arguing something that you hardly ever hear around these parts! Gasp!
