O’Reilly Snubs Homeless Vets, After Promising To Take Care Of Them

Earlier this month, Fox News host Bill O’Reilly claimed that there aren’t “many” homeless veterans, challenging John Edwards for saying that there are 200,000 such vets. Subsequently, O’Reilly pledged to take any homeless vets under his wing:

If you know where’s a veteran, sleeping under a bridge, you call me immediately, and we will make sure that man does not do it.

Yesterday, several homeless veterans rose to this challenge, protesting outside O’Reilly’s office. MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann reports that O’Reilly “cold shouldered” the veterans and “did not even have the courage to meet them”:

Instead, a producer asked the woman, whose group provides transitional housing for 83 vets, whether they have an appointment. … The producer took them into the lobby so our cameras could not get a shot of him accepting their petition with 17,000 signatures. … Instead of meeting with those veterans, O’Reilly had [staff] tell the vets group, please leave a message, somebody will get back to you.

O’Reilly constantly brags about how much he supports the troops. But he has continually lied about the state of homeless veterans, blaming their situation on their “addiction and mental illness” and now refusing to meet with them.

Said one of the veterans snubbed by O’Reilly yesterday: “What did we fight for? Our country. I love my country. Don’t treat us like this.”

UPDATE: Check out Brave New Films’ interviews with the veterans.

No, no, you guys got Bildo all wrong! He IS a man! He was in combat, kinda. Just ask him! I’m sure if he explained about his experiences under fire, the vets would all embrace him as a brother and they’d all go to the nearest titty bar. Bildo would loudly proclaim that he was buying, but then when they got there and found themselves a table, he’d discover that he left his wallet in his desk, and he’d slip out the back door after saying he was going to the “little boys’ room”.

But he IS a man. Just ask him, I tell ya. Just ask him.

    WOW WHAT A PROTEST!!!

Six veterans show up to organized protest at FNC…

The Huffington Post’s Jason Linkins blogs about a Robert Greenwald backed protest of veterans regarding Bill O’Reilly and the back and forth over John Edwards’ remarks on homeless veterans…

Now, a group from Fitzgerald House, an “organization representing homeless veterans,” plans to bring their fight for recognition to Fox’s doorstep. They plan on visiting the Fox News Channel Studios today at 3:00 pm, and will come carrying a petition signed by 17,000 people demanding an apology from O’Reilly for his ignorance and abuse. In a press release, Brave New Films and Fitzgerald House say thay “have found that it is very easy to locate homeless veterans and are willing to help O’Reilly find them if his desire to help homeless vets is sincere.”

ICN hears that at approximately 3:15pm this afternoon – six veterans arrived, with two cameramen from Brave New Films in tow.

ICN has learned that O’Reilly Factor producers met, and spoke to the handful of veterans outside the News Corp building, took the petition they had prepared – and everyone quietly went their separate ways (including a camera crew from NBC, who promptly packed up their gear and left when the ‘protest’ never actually materialized).

Besides Greenwald’s hand held cameras, NBC was the only crew to show up to cover this.

Of course, VA Troll also wants to try his hand at protecting his love interest, Bill. We are supposed to disregard the fact that that MSNBC crew might have filmed Bill coming out and apologizing for his crass remarks and commenting about his verifiable expenditures of money to help with this issue that the man he supports created. It was a setup, of course.

Not even a phone call. Not even a message of thanks from the studio to these men and women(?) who put their lives on the line so that the studio’s fave celeb, Dubya, could have his little war in the Middle East.

And it’s the MSNBC crew’s fault. After all, had they not been there, Bill would have been right there, willing to say many good things and reassure his favorite troops that things’d be alright.

    Comment by Southern Man — February 1, 2008 @ 3:58 pm

No, unless Bill O’Reilly has a REEEEEEALLY big place, that would be impractical. What we would LIKE to expect is that Bill would at least meet with the veteran’s group and shed a little spotlight on the fact that so many who have served our country are now homeless and living on the streets. Especially since he went on record as saying there was no such problem in the first place.

What we realistically expected from Bill was pretty much what we got. Even when Bill dismisses these vets as mentally ill, he manages to do it in a way that suggests he believes that’s their fault.

  84. Nature Rules says:

Southern Man, here in plain English is what you should have figured out about what progressives think regarding this topic: When you speak, you should always speak the truth. This is especially true when you have an audience. When you don’t speak the truth then you should expect to answer for your views. In this case Bill says “There are no homeless vets let alone 200,000 of them…. If you know where’s a veteran, sleeping under a bridge, you call me immediately, and we will make sure that man does not do it.” Now some homeless vets come to see him and he runs like a little boy.

See, a progressive believes in telling the truth and backing it up. If you haven’t learned this from all this time you have been coming here then you are lieing to yourself – -you don’t really care what progressives think.

It was me. I’m not a “troll” or anything. I’ve been a poster, on and off, here for years. The fact that you think it is “stupid” to see if there was any interest in actually doing something about -an issue that you’ve taken the time to write a response to is mighty telling to your true character. You don’t actually care about any of this do you? You just feel empowered by “choosing the right side” of an issue, but don’t have the courage to actually do something about it.

I’ll bet two pay checks that none of that money, or his own go to the “poor”!

Nope, for SM the benefit of the doubt is ok for Bill but not for John.

  88. ralph the wonder llama says:

    SM, simple question:

Based on what you know, and given that on January 4, in response to this statement from John Edwards:

200,000 men and women who wore our uniform proudly and served this country courageously as veterans will go to sleep under bridges and on grates. We’re better than this.

    O’Reilly said:

That was Edwards’ concession speech last night. I mean, come on. The only thing sleeping under a bridge is that guy’s brain.

and on January 15 he said:

if you know where there’s a veteran sleeping under a bridge, you call me immediately, and we will make sure that man does not do it, is not there

    was O’Reilly’s behavior honorable?

  89. abarts says:

BillO is a SEXUAL PREDATOR. They should pummel him with loofas and falafals. Andrea should be handing them out.

  90. katy says:

Later, O’Reilly was challenged by a caller from Portland named Roger:

O’REILLY: We’ve got a caller. Roger. Roger from Portland, Oregon. What say you Roger?
ROGER: Yeah, hey, Bill. First things first. You just said you’ve been in combat, but you’ve never been in the military, have you?

    O’REILLY: No I have not.

ROGER: Then why do you say you’ve been in combat?

O’REILLY: Why do I say that, Roger? Because I was in the middle of a couple of firefights in South and Central America.

ROGER: But you were a media guy.

O’REILLY: Yeah. A media guy with a pen, not a gun. And people were shooting at me, Roger.

ROGER: People might think that you actually were in the military.

O’REILLY: Oh… We don’t want to mislead anybody. But I made it quite clear… quite clear in many, many circumstances –

ROGER: [mumbles something about being, or not being, "fair and balanced"]

O’REILLY: [quietly disconnects Roger] Yeah. Hey listen, Roger. You can take your little “fair and balanced” uh… snip remark and shove it, okay? You’re not getting on this air. Um… You, mister macho man, have never come close to anything I’ve done, down where I’ve been. So take a walk and… uh… ’nuff said.

PEOPLE WERE SHOOTING AT HIM!!! HOLY CRAP!!!
    HAVE YOU NO PITY???!!!

  91. nanlichi says:

I marvel at the pathetic pukes that show up to defend Billo. There has to be some wires touching to feel you have to defend a tv personality, some hole in their psyche.

Or is he really that good? Does he reach around, or is that just another phony promise.

    Pussies.

    Comment by katy — February 1, 2008 @ 5:10 pm

people weren’t shooting at him, or he would be dead, and we’d all be better off.

and AFR is nothing if not another propaganda arm of the military-industrial complex.

  93. WaltTheMan says:

The difference between Olberman and O’Really is Keith tells the truth, name one time he’s been busted for being wrong, like Billo does all the time.

Comment by the Lone Voice of Reason — February 1, 2008 @ 4:26 pm

Actually, Keith was wrong, once. He came back on the next Countdown broadcast and admitted his mistake and apologized.

  94. Marie says:

O’Lielly continues to demonstrate his shallow character, his ego, and his ignorance.

  95. wisedup says:

Billo, why are calling yourself ’southern man?’ You better crawl under your bed…THE VETS ARE COMING,THE VETS ARE COMING!’

  96. mdbyrne says:

This saddens me to no end. To think that these were once the men and women with so much strenght and pride, and they are now the shells of their former selves living having to hustle to find a place to stay warm and sleep, scrounge for food where they can find it. Really really sad.
Let’s not forget that the scandal here is not what O’Reilley said but that one vet has eat out of a garbage can tonight.

  97. drago says:

It’s simple: Bill O is a worthless, unloved, utter and total piece of sh*t.

  98. ralph the wonder llama says:

I like how Tracy2 tries to make this thread about Olbermann.

Hey, Tracy2, you didn’t say anything about Bildo snubbing the homeless vets. Care to comment?

This is what your hero said:

    He lied. You support that.

    Dismissed.

I do love your Smails imitation. I’m waiting….

Considering he denied their existence until last week I am thinking…not so much.

  107. Sabyen91 says:

“Edwards came to New Orleans last year to kick off his campaign (18 months ago). He went to the Lower Ninth Ward and stood in front of a house that was abandoned before Katrina, and started to speak about the poor. The poor was his only ticket to at least get the VP nomination again, and he failed because most saw through his bullshit. He has campaign money left over; I’ll bet two pay checks that none of that money, or his own go to the “poor”!

“Helping homeless vets is one thing.

Accepting the rants of a gang of protesters is quite another.

Perhaps the angry mob should assemble on your front lawn, and we shall see how you react, ok?

    Comment by O. Bigfoot — February 1, 2008 @ 10:23 pm”

Wow, a “gang” of protestors? Are they participating in drive-bys and cappin people in their a$$es? I wish those vets could actually watch TV and listen to Billo denying their existence. Then he would know angry.

  112. ralph the wonder llama says:

Um… Bigfool… WHAT “rants of a gang of protesters” are you talking about?

  113. ralph the wonder llama says:

Yeah… one thing that O’Lielly promised but didn’t deliver.

  114. cybercitizen says:

    CORRECTION: Post #131 is inaccurate.

John Edwards was back last spring with 700 students who donated their spring break and again last fall with guests who had won a contest to work with him. Post #131 is inaccurate. You can find the video proving this somewhere on the John Edwards official web site.

  115. Gregor Samsa says:

Confronted with the choice of supporting the veterans -and their rightful indignation- or O’Reilly and his snub of the former, the trolls in this thread choose O’Reilly, of course.

    Comment by O. Bigfoot — February 2, 2008 @ 12:01 am

    Blah, blah, blah

Fact remains O’Reilly made a statement, and now cannot simply admit he was wrong, but instead keeps dissing the people he offended.

Yeah, he might do a lot for the vets -as long as they fit the concept of vets he has in his teeny little mind, which doesn’t include homeless vets, apparently.

  121. Gregor Samsa says:

    Comment by Zooey — February 2, 2008 @ 12:39 am

I take this mouthbreather’s opinion as meaning “this is the way *I* think things should work”

In other words, any resemblance between Footie’s opinion and reality is a mere coincidence.

  122. Zooey says:

    Comment by Gregor Samsa — February 2, 2008 @ 1:02 am

It’s amazing to me the number of trolls who believe that making a statement about their ideal world suffices for fact in their teeny brains.

I have a sister who, when I told her of the treatment of vets in this country, simply said, “I’m sure that can’t be true.” That was all there was to it. She was sure it couldn’t be true — so it was not true. Nuts.

  123. Sabyen91 says:

Heh, “I’m sure that can’t be true”. I won’t actually go and check it out because I don’t want my worldview challenged but…not true.

  124. Sabyen91 says:

That is so weird to me. My family is small (3 adults left) but they are all liberal. I especially feel for those that have ALL conservative family members.

  125. Zooey says:

You know what the weird thing is, JP? This particular sister was in the Navy for six years. The reason I brought up the treatment of vets to her is because she’s an RN and a Navy vet. I thought she’d want to be involved in helping out.

But she wouldn’t hear it. Very frustrating.

  126. Sabyen91 says:

I tell you, I think the humans are insane. I wonder if any other species experiences denial.

  127. Zooey says:

It’s really quite incredible. I’d rather live in the real world — lumps and all, then exist in some sort of fantasy land.

  128. Sabyen91 says:

People believe in heaven (and before that Elysium and Nirvana and Valhalla), Zooey. They clearly need to believe in something good. I don’t get believing what you want to believe with no evidence but it sure does pacify a whole lot of people.

Time for bed. Very sleepy. Have a good night.

  129. BloggerRadio.com says:

Not sure why anyone would care what Bill O’Lie-Lee says or does.

I simply don’t listen to, or watch junk I find stupid and unpleasant and O’Lie-Lee fits both those criteria.

I’m sure Willie O’Lie-Lee will get along just fine without me as part of his audience as will his sponsors without my patronage.

I suspect we’d all more quickly realize our desire to further marginalize the O’Lie-Lee Actor by totally … entirely ignoring his very existence. Posting anything about him and even commenting using the actual spelling of his name is bad strategy. Stirring-the-pot and being outrageous is all the ignorant and untalented have going for themselves. If we ignore those, he’s got nuttin’.

oh, and in fairness to all good republicans. billo never said anything about helping anyone……which is what we would exptect right…….here’s the quote:

you call me immediately, and we will make sure that man does not do it.

I think we all know when a facist like oliely says we will make sure they don’t do it…….well, it kinda finisishes itself doesn’t it.

  132. Support_The_Vets says:

Anyone who cares about homeless veterans should check out
WHEN I CAME HOME – a great doc about homeless veterans.

    http://www.whenicamehome.com

It focuses on several vets who end up homeless in NY after returning from combat in Iraq. There is a one-minute trailer and links to how you can help homeless veterans.

Thank you Bill for giving the issue so much press. You need to get out of the limo, bud. You are a clueless, draft-dodger

  133. bernard quatermass says:
