How could you argue with socialist success stories like the Soviet Union, pre-market reform Communist China and Hugo Chavez. I guess if we are considering political ideology, we should all defer to the incredibly successful socialists.

Comment by CaptainMantastic

actually the soviet union went banrupt because of it's extended war in Afganistan....we obviously learned nothing from that.

Communist China is doing better than we are.....

Hugo is doing just fine too.........

I guess if we are considering political ideology, we should all defer to the incredibly successful captialists. Oh yeah, there are a lot of poor capitalist countryies in the world.....hmm

please do not respond to this post cap. It is just to refute your ignorance.....nothing more.

CaptainMasturbastic,
Sorry I'm so late responding but I had a busy weekend. I think you are missing the point. From about 1950 to today, the % of our tax revenues coming from coporations has gone down in about every single budget. Obviously that means that the % coming from people has to increase every year. The top rate on people has dropped from 90% to 35%. The lower class has no money for taxes, so that means the difference is made up by middle class people. Don't take my word for it---go look at a good almanac---one not made by the Heritage Foundation (EXXON) or the American Enterprise Institute.

You point out what a big share of taxes the top 10% pay. This excludes corporations which is the topic of the thread. Also, at the height of Microsoft's stock price Bill Gates' wealth (about $100 billion) was equal to the wealth of the bottom 50% of Americans. This is after he paid his taxes which you think are too high. The five members of the Walton family (Wal-Mart) are worth about $100 billion today after they paid their taxes which you think are too high.

If the top 1% have 42% of the wealth of the US, then they should pay more than 42% of the taxes because our tax system is supposed to be progressive.

The US taxpayers will have to pay $2 Trillion for the Iraq war. This illegal war and occupation has benefited only the top five Western oil companies and the merchants of death.

Are you totally denying Obama’s own words?

Comment by thirdparty — February 3, 2008 @ 5:05 pm

how can I deny Obama’s words when you’re making them up? Try quoting instead of paraphrasing to fit your erroneous and biased projection.

Comment by Lefty Patriot — February 3, 2008 @ 10:29 pm

Alright. I'll paste what I said earlier, followed by Obama's quote, followed by why you're wrong and I'm right.

As far as the GOP goes, don’t you think it’s been pretty successful when one leading Dem is describing Reagan as transformative and influential, totally dismissing Carter and Clinton?

Comment by thirdparty — February 3, 2008 @ 3:27 pm

OK, here's what Obama said:

I don't want to present myself as some sort of singular figure. I think part of what's different are the times. I do think that for example the 1980 was different. I think Ronald Reagan changed the trajectory of America in a way that Richard Nixon did not and in a way that Bill Clinton did not. He put us on a fundamentally different path because the country was ready for it. I think they felt like with all the excesses of the 1960s and 1970s and government had grown and grown but there wasn't much sense of accountability in terms of how it was operating. I think people, he just tapped into what people were already feeling, which was we want clarity we want optimism, we want a return to that sense of dynamism and entrepreneurship that had been missing.

This is why I thought you didn't even know what I was talking about. I said Obama identified Reagan is more transformative and influential. I don't think he was endorsing Reagan's politics, but he made a descriptive statement, which I find to be true, that Reagan "changed the trajectory of America," tacitly dismissing Carter and explicitly dismissing Clinton (he also, of course, dismissed Nixon). When I initially posted this, you responded:

Of course, that never happened, but you do lie as a reflex, so I guess it’s inevitable that you will lie whenever given th opportunity.

Comment by Lefty Patriot — February 3, 2008 @ 4:44 pm

Really, that never happened? As Bill Clinton once said, "Give me a break. This whole thing is the biggest fairy tale I’ve ever seen."

Oh, wait, that never happened either...

Again, keep in mind that I’m rebutting this claim that everything the GOP did was a failure. Again, you can look at Reagan or you can look at the GOP Congress which pushed Clinton to do certain things…either way, you’re wrong.

Again, you're wrong. Everything the GOp did was a failure, and Clinton's tacking to the right wasalso a failure. Conservative policies always result in failure overall, and success only for the few. this is unAmerican, thus, a failure.

Fred, it’s not a matter of good or bad economy. It’s about policy, and Clinton was pretty conservative. I know a lot of liberals who decry him for that, but they don’t deny that he was a conservative Democrat.

Fred, it's not a matter of good or bad economy. It's about policy, and Clinton was pretty conservative. I know a lot of liberals who decry him for that, but they don't deny that he was a conservative Democrat.

guess your’r gonna tell me gw bush is a good republican too……you can’t have it both ways. If clinton was a repbulican then bush can’t be too…..

you tryint to tell me that clinton did it the republican way and got it right but when gw bush does it the repbublican way he has it wrong?

raygun economics= voodoo economics…..historically acknowledged….even by bush sr….

clinton years…..ah, much better……oh and Jimmy inherited his hard four years from……oh yeah, a republican.

Comment by Fred — February 3, 2008 @ 3:46 pm

My point is that they are both rather conservative. Clinton adopted conservative policies, which helped the economy along. But the reality is that a president doesn't have much influence over the economy; what we're debating is the ability of a president to advance a policy and succeed at it. I don't think Bush has been terribly successful on the economic front - the trade deals he did are pretty meaningless, and the first tax cut with chock full of rebates that were useless. Reagan, like Kennedy, slashed marginal tax rates, and Clinton signed NAFTA and welfare reform, which are two of the leading economic achievements of the past 30 years.

Again, keep in mind that I'm rebutting this claim that everything the GOP did was a failure. Again, you can look at Reagan or you can look at the GOP Congress which pushed Clinton to do certain things...either way, you're wrong.

“As far as the GOP goes, don’t you think it’s been pretty successful when one leading Dem is describing Reagan as transformative and influential, totally dismissing Carter and Clinton?

Of course, that never happened, but you do lie as a reflex, so I guess it’s inevitable that you will lie whenever given th opportunity.

Are you sure it's me who's lying as a reflex? Do you even know what I'm talking about? Are you totally denying Obama's own words?

What makes you think it can’t be $555 billion? And Hillary’s healthcare plan can easily be funded by ending Bush’s losing wars.

You’re so very simpleminded.

Why not $555 billion? Because of math. The Clinton campaign projects a $55 billion windfall from the tax hike.

Last I heard, Hillary wants to continue the war in Afghanistan. She also wants troops left in Iraq to continue combat operations (as you'll recall from her debate over this with John Edwards).

that's pretty good, except you're only making yourself look bad. your own personal stupidity is no excuse for the institutional stupidity of your brain-dead ideology.

I’m sure you Dems will really make the most of the whopping $55 billion that comes in from taxing the top 1%….I hear it’ll cover half of Hillary’s health care mandate.
