CREW calls for special counsel on missing WH e-mails.

CREW sent a letter to Attorney General Michael Mukasey today, asking that he appoint a special council to investigate “whether the White House violated federal record-keeping laws by knowingly failing to preserve and restore millions of emails.” CREW executive director Melanie Sloan stated:

“The importance and historical significance of the missing emails makes it imperative that an impartial special counsel be appointed without delay to investigate the disappearance of these records. [...] The missing emails do not belong to the Bush administration, but to the American people. The Attorney General should take action to protect the right of future generations to look back and understand the role of White House officials in critical events.”

  4. Briseadh na Faire Says:

    Why bother?

With impeachment off the table, Bush can ignore every request until he's safely out of office.

The Democratic Party lacks the courage to do what is right for this country. They no more deserve to be in power than the Republicans.

  9. whatevah Says:

#4 I fear that you're absolutely right. Unless/until impeachment takes place, the corruption will continue in this country. Even if only a symbolic gesture, it must take place in order to begin to enforce the rule of law again in this country.

Neither party deserves to be in office at this point. Neither party is or has been representing the people. It may be time for another boston tea party to get their attention?

  10. whatevah Says:

#8 And taken one step further the american people will begin to bring charges against these individuals. It's called treason. Treason isn't off the table simply because someone is out of office. And the people plan to go after every last one of them and bring them to justice. The People will not forget and simply permit them to walk off nonchalantly. They're our employees. They will be held accountable.

  11. osage Says:

Anyone who believes a man or woman appointed by George W. Bush will do what's best of the citizens of America has been asleep for the last seven years. Taking impeachment off the table was a betrayal of congresses' sworn responsibilities to defend our Constitution. Michael Mukasey will not appoint a Special Prosecutor because his Republican political loyalties trump his judicial integrity.

    It's all immaterial.

If you look further, you'll see that there are no penalties for not obeying this law.

I would think that they would better off trying to go after this issue as a cover up of potential crimes.

The laws there are much stricter and the administration cannot cite executive privilege.

  24. mr.frazzlebottom Says:

Maybe they'll get a response in a couple of years:

"In a case of too little too late, further demonstrating the need for a congressional Office of Public Integrity, the Senate Ethics Committee has – two years later – responded to CREW’s fall, 2005 ethics complaints against former Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist. Astonishingly, after failing to take action while Senator Frist was in office, the Ethics Committee now notes it does not have jurisdiction over former members, meaning it is now barred from acting. What does this mean? Senator Pete Domenici, retiring at the end of this term, has nothing to worry about."

Pelosi took impeachment off the table because she has been compromised, along with a handful of key power democrats.

People need to go after Pelosi for granting Bush/Cheeny total immunity from prosecution under impeachment rules.

Then we'll see this crime organization start to crumble, prosecute those who protect the criminals and they'll turn.... of course that would be in the real world -- what was I thinking.

Go ahead, Melanie, and try your best, as you usually do, but we won't be holding our breaths.

  39. Duck Soup Says:

Missing White House records? When is the last Presidential Administration for that to happen? You got it, records routinely disappeared and popped up all over the place in the Clinton White House.

I think America is ready for a change from the Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton cycle. They are tired of the same old divisive politics. They want a politician who can inspire people, and who can reach across the aisle, because that is what it will take to get anything done. We want hope, unity and change. Go Obama go!

This collection of sociopathic weasels called the G.W. Bush Administration doesn't even tried to hide their criminality they are so confident that they are above the law and no one will hold them accountable.
Too bad there aren't more people like Melanie Sloan and Henry Waxman who have the character to stand up for what was our American democracy.
In 60 years we have gone form the greatest generation to the laziest generation.
It is the character of the citizens of a nation that makes it what it is, when the character of the people goes down the nation follows that path.

  42. Snowball Says:

Mukasey won't budge. His job, as he sees it, is to run defense for the Bush regime. What's really sad, is that when Democrats had the chance to grill him on this and Attorneygate, they passed and focused only on waterboarding (not that it isn't important) which they knew he was going to stonewall anyway. In doing so, they missed a major play that would have led them no other option but impeachment.

Why can't the Democrats walk and chew gum at the same time?

You are so blinded by your ideology that you can no longer see that your leaders are criminals, destroying everything that is American and democratic.
I think you have mistaken democratic with Democratic - the latter is the party you hate, the former is the system of government that your leader is determined to subvert.

Republicans only attack rich people who act responsibly with a social conscience. If they're destructive, power mad ideologues such as Murdoch and Scaife, they are more than willing to shift the tax burden from the shoulders of oligarchy onto themselves. Why do you want the self-interested Rupert Murdoch to have a tax break at your expense?

Unfortunately for you, you don't have a valid point to make, and that's your problem. Nothing you've said here in any way exposes any scandalous or nefarious behavior on CREW's part. It's just you whining, about nothing.

    Nice try though...

Please go back to "banging on yer... whatever".

You appear to be good at it.

  51. questioneverything Says:

In 2004 I told John Edwards and John Kerry that you can't ask these people for anything. CREW is great, but who, not Clinton or Obama or Reid or Pelosi, will stop asking and start telling that these things are illegal. We have a constitution--use it. But thanks for this non-Super Tuesday story. This is the reason that Edwards hasn't endorsed anyone. If the candidates might stand up now and take them on? Right.

    Comment by Buckie Boy — February 4, 2008 @ 6:49 pm

Unfortunately this is the cycle of human history. Sometimes there has to be a Dark Age before an Age of Renaissance. And it has always been those who seek to rule by "tyrany of eternity" who have brought Dark Ages upon us

The last abuse of power and cruel use of fear on the masses by the clergy brought on the Renaissance, which nearly made Religion go extinct.

Maybe this time it will make the Republican Party go extinct.

  54. americangoy Says:

    Comment by Snowball — February 4, 2008 @ 10:14 pm

Can't say fer sure, Snowball, but it would appear to be A LOT!

    http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=55616

Mega-pastor Rick Warren is being challenged by other Christian leaders for not disciplining a prominent member of his California Saddleback Church flock for being one of the world's leading pornographers.

That would be Rupert Murdoch, chairman of News Corp., which, in addition to building a media empire on the chests of topless models and edgy, pushing-the-envelope Fox TV network shows, recently began building a stable of hard-core porn channels for its BSkyB subsidiary. Yet, even before the BSkyB venture into hard-core porn, Murdoch's News Corp. was steeped in the business.

"News Corp. is a major owner of DirecTV, which sells more pornographic films than (Hustler magazine founder and porn film producer Larry) Flynt," says porn fighter Gail Dines, professor of American Studies at Boston's Wheelock College. "In 2000, the New York Times reported that nearly $200 million a year is spent by the 8.7 million subscribers to DirecTV. Among News Corp.'s other media holdings are the Fox Broadcasting and cable TV networks, 20th Century Fox, the New York Post and TV Guide. Welcome to synergy: Murdoch also owns Harper Collins, which published pornography star Jenna Jameson's best-selling book, 'How To Make Love Like a Porn Star.'"

Murdoch built his media empire as an Australian newspaper heir who added topless, alluring Page 3 girls to the mix – a practice some of his papers, including the British holding the Sun, still follow today. Last week he made a bid to buy the Wall Street Journal.

Oh yeah... Rupert just reeks... of class.... :p
