Dow Jones plunges more than 350 points.»

Stocks tanked this afternoon “after a report showing a big slowdown in the services sector of the economy amplified fears that a recession is underway or imminent.” The report “showed business activity falling in January for the first time in five years.” The Dow Jones’s drop of more than 350 points marks the “worst loss in a single day so far in 2008,” and the eighth worst day since 2000.

You know what? I think these are good news.

Maybe it will help us to not trust again technocrats telling us that the solution for all the problems in the world was to privatize every public service. I know that recession has more to do than just privatizations, but it is a good example of how we follow those idiots every word thinking that they will work for us. This is all our fault for thinking that healthy macroeconomics indicators mean commonwealth. What a stupid, freaking lie since 1982.

My question, how many millionaire guys will become poor after recession and how many poor will become rich? Any bets?

On a serious note, this IS serious. The service sector represents 90% of the U.S economy.

Sorry folks, but dropping interest rates on its head won’t help much, I don’t think. The SO HOT econony of 2002-2006 was financed through subprime lending (easy money, bad terms), a practice now out the door.

katy, tax cuts are the panacea to life’s ills. Deregulate, remove all accounting systems, therefore eliminating “wasteful, bloatedprograms”. It’s called saving money in all the right places.

We can talk later about expanding the adding a few more sides to the Pentagon.

  16. JMOHR Says:

The general trend of this econcomy has been downwards. Good_golly is the usual, tired appologist for a failed Republican party. One need only compare job creation, wages and income (by income band), employment ration (as opposed to unemployment) to see that this administration has essentially failed to advance the economy as it should have after a recession. But good_golly is the kind of mindless twit that supports the Republican party and its failed policies. The measurement of an econcomy is not the stock market you fool, it is the health of its business and it is the well being of its people. Somethings that you are to stupid to comprehend. You are obviously retarded or you would recognize that the stock market dip was because of a slow down in the largest segment of the “new” economy. It shows that economic fundamentals are in question. We have seen a number of fundamental indicators in the credit, foreclosure, employment ratio all headed south. But these would not matter to you since you can not read.

  17. dbadass Says:

NAFTA was initially pursued by corporate interest in the United States and Canada supportive of free trade, led by Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, U.S. President George H. W. Bush, and the Mexican President Carlos Salinas de Gortari. The three countries signed NAFTA in December 1992, subject to ratification by the legislatures of the three countries. There was considerable opposition in all three countries. In the United States, NAFTA was able to secure passage after Bill Clinton made its passage a major legislative priority in 1993. Since the agreement had been signed by Bush under his fast-track prerogative, Clinton did not alter the original agreement, but complemented it with the aforementioned NAAEC and NAALC. After intense political debate and the negotiation of these side agreements, the U.S. House passed NAFTA on November 17, 1993, by 234-200 vote (132 Republicans and 102 Democrats voting in favor; 156 Democrats, 43 Republicans, and 1 independent against),[7] and the U.S. Senate passed it on the last day of its 1993 session, Saturday, November 20, 1993, by 61-38 vote (34 Republicans and 27 Democrats voting in favor; 28 Democrats and 10 Republicans against, with 1 Democrat opponent not voting).[8]

Wiki sees it a little differently than Had Enough does

But….but….Sean Hannity has been telling us how amazingly well the economy really is, and how all this negativity was just spin from the evil “liberal media”.

These statistics must have a “liberal bias” too.

While it’s funny to watch the right-wing pundits once again be wrong, this is very, very bad news for our country. We can’t have a new President soon enough. We’ll be cleaning up the mess Bush left us for many years to come.

  25. raynman Says:

    The strategy is in place.

Four years from now, as President Obama or Clinton is trying to pull the United States out of the morass that Bush left it in, the Republicans will be proclaiming how it was all the Democrats fault that the country fell into a recession (after all, it was a Democratic Congress) and that’s why we need a Republican in the White House.

This is why Democrats and Progressives have such a hard time getting re-elected lately. We’re not willing to throw the country in a toilet now just so we can be re-elected 4 years from now.

  26. WaltTheMan Says:

It was down by 370 points by the time trading was wrapped up. The problem is not that it is the service sector that is involved, it is that it is construction and home improvement that were hardest hit. This in turn extends to building materials, furnishings and appliances in a drag-along effect. Service sector jobs like help desks which are not off-shored will not be affected. Health care is immune because people can not put off getting sick.

GiGi, it’s TOO LATE FOR YOU, but TAKE YOUR MEDS ANYWAY, YOU STUPID IGNORANT LITTLE TARD!

  88. VerbalKint Says:

In all seriousness, this mess is caused by a toxic brew of massive tax cuts for the wealthy, massive increase in deficits, massive deregulation, complete loss of control of credit markets, massively wasteful spending on a pointless and illegal war, and the systematic depreciation of the dollar against foreign currencies. Ultimately, though, I think the most devastating “feature” of Republican policies is the flow of money away from the poor and to the rich. This has left the masses with less money to spend, and the rich with too much money to chase investments. Thus has ignited an asset bubble, first in stocks, then in real estate, that is unsustainable. Greenspan definitely deserves some blame, but most of the blame goes to Bush and the Republicans who have marched in lockstep with him.

  89. Fred Says:

    yes Arn…..

LOL not to put to fine a point on in it, but Carter is often considered one of the worst presidents in history. But hey if you need to put Bush in the same category go for it.

You’re a happy camper. Too bad for you, we only have to look back to the 1990s and not 1979. We feel like our country has taken a step back to the 1970s under Bush, but you don’t care that we should be even better off in 2008 than even the Clinton years, right? Is the new standard to be slightly better off than the worst?

What a massive waste of time it’s been under this admin.

Now the U.S. is allowed to import (heavily subsidized) corn into Mexico with no tariffs. This is killing Mexican farmers and ravaging their economy.

There were huge protests in Mexico.

    Mexico’s staple food is corn.

Expects hundreds of thousands more Mexican farmers to enter our country trying to find work to save their families from starving.

Will the “change” candidate Hillary have the courage to shred the agreement (NAFTA) signed by her husband?

This is a well thought plan: see how much you can squeeze the working class of countries before they start rioting.

If they start rioting, you begin talking about national security, about how communists have infiltrated and how evil are workers (somebody remember Margaret Thatcher calling the English striking miners: the enemy within? See Billy Elliot)

If the people keep complaining they loose the leash a little, they give them some crumbles of the cake and everyone is happy again, but they will get your retirement money, your health security money and you will buy their products at the price they want.

I’m not talking about govts, I’m talking about corporations, governement just watch out over the people so they give up their rights and money without disturbances.

    It’s a plan. It’s working…but it won’t last.

Maybe let private industry handle defense. Get the government out of the currency markets and let the states just print up their own dough. Then again if fed government intervention is so bad why not get rid of state regs too?

We already had that experiment, back in the 1800s. Historians call it the Robber Baron Era.

What in the current admin has been effective? Government has grown by some 35% under Bush and the problem with the market is from deregulation. The Iraq war is NOT paying for itself. Inflation is high. Debt is high, the price of food is rising quickly. People are not saving money. What your repeating is the exact same ideology that got us into this mess,

  167. Xisithrus Says:

The Bush budget is 3 trillion and that doesnt include more war costs.

Does Tracy2 really think that the budget will decrease if we continue the path we are on?

No way. Its physically impossible that more of the same will result in a balanced budget.

That’s the part I don’t get. It is so bipolar. On one hand they are freaking out about those they see as being less than American while on the other they are freaking about how bad the big bad government is. What is up with that?

This isn’t a free market country,a nd never will be. It is a Liberal Democracy,a nd was designed as such. Too bad for you and your ignorant, backwards, loser ideology. Time for you to get out of the way and let us fix your mess, again.

Of COURSE you’re HAPPY WITH A TANKING ECONOMY, it’s the ONLY THING YOU CAN COUNT ON FROM THE GOP!!! It’s the ONLY THING you DO WELL except HATE and PROJECT!

No new taxes, asswipes! I dare a Democrat President to raise taxes in a recession. You will lose it all if you do that. Comment by Liberals Are Filled With Hate — February 5, 2008 @ 11:46 pm

Actually BILL raised taxes when he inherited the BUSH-I recession and the ECONOMY BOOMED! You TARDS should leave the economy to DEMOCRATS since you OBVIOUSLY don’t know what you’re doing!

Good luck with Hillary as your candidate - she is the GOP’s best hope to retain power.

  175. republicans hate facts Says:

For those that don’t know it, if you use the statistics from PRE-REAGAN, we’ve been in a recession for the last two quarters. That’s why most americans BELIEVE there’s a RECESSION - BECAUSE THERE IS!

The GOP has already abdicated its power, now that it’s down to 20% or so. Hillary will rip your heads off and shit down your necks, and the people will cheer as you are all led to prison. You pigs are done for.

  178. Lefty Patriot Says:

The second Bush recession will destroy the GOP, and we will bury it with either Obama or Clinton. America knows that the failure of the GOP to defend the USA (thanks for 9/11), protect the USA (thanks for katrina) or grow the USA (thanks for the 2nd Bush recession) means an end to that party of perverts, thieves, liars and sociopaths. Finally, we’ll have a strong, free country to be proud of, instead of a bloodthirsty, losing, torturing, terrorist third-rate banana republic.

Jeezus, Cap’n, are you just playing around, or are you really that dense?

You’re pretending that the trolls here like GiGi, LAFWH, Tracy2, Troll John Kerry. et al, bring the potential for any kind of debate to this forum. If you have tried to discuss anything intelligently with any of them, or even witnessed anyone making such an attempt, you’d have to admit that they and their brethren add nothing but page hits to the discussion.

To try to make the claim that progressives are “short-sighted” for refusing to take them seriously after they’ve proven themselves and their worth is just foolish.

They try to get you off-topic by attacking you PERSONALLY, so just IGNORE THEM and tell the TRUTH about their TREASONOUS “heroes”

It’s better to have a recession than an economy that fails completely, i.e. a state run economy.

    Comment by Tracy2 — February 5, 2008 @ 5:06 pm

And what is an economy where corporations bribe the Government through lobbying to receive tax cuts? Looks as a state run economy, or better, a corporatocracy, not a democracy at all. Where is the difference with Mexico, where a few ultrarich people rule over millions of poor people? The appearence of freedom and democracy? Yeah, right.
