This morning on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, Mary Matalin — former Dick Cheney adviser and current Mitt Romney flack — made what appeared to be a back-handed swipe at John McCain’s family. Romney has “what all Americans want in the White House,” Matalin said, “which is an all-American family”:
I think there’s something else about Romney that’s attractive. … He’s also the future. They call it change, but it’s a really good example of what campaigns are always about — which is the future. He is the future.
He understands global economics. He understands how to run things. He’s fresh. He’s new. He’s got what all Americans want in the White House — which is an all-American family.
Watch it:
Here’s a picture of Mitt Romney’s family:
Matalin seems to be suggesting that there’s something about this picture of McCain’s family that just isn’t truly “all-American”:

If Matalin wasn’t talking about McCain, was she suggesting that Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton don’t have “all-American” families?
Assuming getting head in the Oval Office is an “all American” family trait, LEAVE BILLARY ALONE…
February 5th, 2008 at 10:44 amIf Matalin wasn’t talking about McCain, was she suggesting that Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton don’t have “all-American†families?
Of course.
February 5th, 2008 at 10:45 amwell, maccave should’ve taken his family pic at a baseball stadium…
i heard this… remember this is lady mcCheeeney talking…
February 5th, 2008 at 10:45 amRemember that Matalin has worked closely with Dick Cheney for many years – innuendo, nuance and carefully crafted pandering is her bag.
February 5th, 2008 at 10:46 amWell, I would not be surprised if we see several Maccaca moments during this upcoming campaign season.
February 5th, 2008 at 10:47 amOooooo, is there a video of her saying this?! I love a dose of Cruella deVille in the morning!
February 5th, 2008 at 10:50 amMatalin wants to be Romney’s Monica Lewinski
February 5th, 2008 at 10:52 amwhat all Americans want in the White House — which is an all-American family.
Me too, I say Homer Simpson for President!
February 5th, 2008 at 10:52 amRomney reminds me of an elitist used-car salesman. As far as his family goes, why are his five sons too good to serve in the military?
February 5th, 2008 at 10:52 amAs for the photo of Romney’s family, which of the kids is in the closet?
February 5th, 2008 at 10:52 amWhat would the GOP be without their “Code Words”?
All-American Family = WHITE
February 5th, 2008 at 10:53 amShorter Matalin: Mitt Romney is Ward Cleaver.
Unspoken, subconscious Matalin: McCain has a wandering weiner… Just look at his “adopted” kid…
February 5th, 2008 at 10:53 amAs my father would say, “sounds like [she's] got a bad case of the ‘I wants’”.
February 5th, 2008 at 10:54 amwell, Romney does have at least one gay son, so in that sense, they are all-american.
February 5th, 2008 at 10:54 amAt least Homer Simpson is more intelligent than the current occupant!
February 5th, 2008 at 10:54 amDraft-age white boys . . . that’s an all-American family all right. All-American neocon chickenhawks.

February 5th, 2008 at 10:57 am“He’s got what all Americans want in the White House — which is an all-American family.”
Really? I think on my list of important qualifications for a President the “all-Americanness” of his/her family falls somewhere between prefers boxers over briefs and puts ketchup, mustard, and relish on hot dogs.
February 5th, 2008 at 10:58 am#16 – I agree.
Looking at that Romney family photograph with all of his sons and not one of them willing to serve in uniform in this nation’s armed forces. But Mitt is so willing to keep our troops over in Iraq indefinitely.
February 5th, 2008 at 10:59 amI’d say that Romney has too many sons. (Not enough venture capitalists to go around?)
February 5th, 2008 at 11:00 amUh, Romney’s family looks pretty repressed to me.
February 5th, 2008 at 11:01 amAn “All-American” president takes 40% vacation during his first 8 months in office alone to watch Barney chase Armadillas’.

February 5th, 2008 at 11:05 amConservatives find family to be extremely important when they consider who to have as the leader of their country.

February 5th, 2008 at 11:06 amI’m sure Obama will be prepared for the Republican hate machine if he’s the nominee. He was already spot on when he noted they can’t campaign on the past.
February 5th, 2008 at 11:08 amAnd WTF does that mean? NOTHING. It means nothing at all, but it sure sounds fancy.

February 5th, 2008 at 11:12 amRomeny’s family portrait seems like a Blockbuster staff reunion.
February 5th, 2008 at 11:12 amIt’s not important what voters think of the candidates’ families. What is important is how the candidates think of American families (or those, like gay couples who want to be families) and what their plans are for those families in their vision of government.
Romney’s family is, indeed, attractive. So, let them go into modeling.
February 5th, 2008 at 11:13 amApparently Republicans want some sort of Bronze-age notion of a ritually perfect king. Maybe it’s because they’re afraid that their gods will be angry if their king has any sort of ritual blemish.
Hello, folks, 21st century Republic here. Put down the Halstatt sword and wicker shield and join us.

February 5th, 2008 at 11:16 amCheck out Romney’s blonde son. They might represent a slightly larger cross section of the country than Ms Matalin is aware of.

February 5th, 2008 at 11:22 amThank the lord Romney does have a chance. I could never vote for him. He is completely fake.
February 5th, 2008 at 11:24 amThe only difference between Romney and McCain, is who might pull the trigger faster, and get us in a big war again.
McCain in my opinion will be faster..other than that.
both love Reagan,
both will support Israel right or wrong,
both will select a conservative Judges.
both will always remember and repay their financial backers.
Both will put us in another war..soon…
but McCain with heavy support of Neocons and his love for wars will beat Romeny on this one.
both have no clue about how to solve the average Americans economic, health, education and all other on hand and existing problems.
Matalin talks about this contest as if it is a beauty contest.
February 5th, 2008 at 11:25 amHow sad, that the media wants her opinion . Why not bring someone with brains… please ?!!
We need to take the microphone away from these people and give them back their oranage crate to stand on. They do nothing with it but spread bad-feeling.

I think you’re leaping to conclusions here. In my opinion, this probably has more to do with the newfound affinity of Republicans for candyass fa@@ots. After all, McCain has a son serving in Iraq. Whereas Romney has five little pansies who haven’t served a day in their lives in the (real) military, just like our beloved President and Vice President. Instead, they’re “serving their country” by driving a Winnebago around Iowa. That’s the new Republican standard for moral courage, it seems.
And it’s probably not a coincidence that pathetic chickenhawks like Limbaugh hate McCain so much. It’ll be interesting to see if the Republican convention goers wear those disgraceful Purple Heart bandages again this year . . . this time against their own candidate.
February 5th, 2008 at 12:35 pm“And it’s probably not a coincidence that pathetic chickenhawks like Limbaugh hate McCain so much.”
You know, I never served in the military myself. Thought about it once when I was a teenager, but it didn’t gel at the time. But of all the things that offend me about “the other side,” the thing that may offend me the MOST is what they seem to like to do to people who actually DID serve (Max Cleland, et al). It is so far beyond disgusting that I actually find it difficult to discuss at all.

Buckie; I think anyone who goes into the service today is several cards short of a full deck. With stop-loss, they can keep you in and keep sending you back to Iraq forever. Keep everyone in the combat zone until nearly all are dead/disabled(physically or mentally).
They got me via the draft.

February 5th, 2008 at 1:14 pmOf course John McCain doesn’t have an all American family, he has an adopted Black kid. Only whites need apply for residency at the white house, don’t you guys know that. This twit opened her piehole and less the biggoted remarks out because she doesn’t see anything wrong with that statement. How is Mitt Romney’s family any better than anyones else’s family. They aren’t, they are just a bunch of lucky rich people, born with a silver spoon. They shouldn’t be given any more special privileges other than being white and rich. I mean come on how stupid can the Republicans be. Under her way of thinking the Obama’s don’t belong anywhere near the white house. They aren’t white and rich.
