Matalin: Romney Has ‘What All Americans Want In The White House…Which Is An All-American Family’»

This morning on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, Mary Matalin — former Dick Cheney adviser and current Mitt Romney flack — made what appeared to be a back-handed swipe at John McCain’s family. Romney has “what all Americans want in the White House,” Matalin said, “which is an all-American family”:

I think there’s something else about Romney that’s attractive. … He’s also the future. They call it change, but it’s a really good example of what campaigns are always about — which is the future. He is the future.

He understands global economics. He understands how to run things. He’s fresh. He’s new. He’s got what all Americans want in the White House — which is an all-American family.

Here’s a picture of Mitt Romney’s family:

Matalin seems to be suggesting that there’s something about this picture of McCain’s family that just isn’t truly “all-American”:

If Matalin wasn’t talking about McCain, was she suggesting that Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton don’t have “all-American” families?

    Of course.

well, maccave should’ve taken his family pic at a baseball stadium…

i heard this… remember this is lady mcCheeeney talking…

  4. Marie Says:

Remember that Matalin has worked closely with Dick Cheney for many years - innuendo, nuance and carefully crafted pandering is her bag.

  5. JMOHR Says:

Well, I would not be surprised if we see several Maccaca moments during this upcoming campaign season.

Me too, I say Homer Simpson for President!

  9. celtic cynic Says:

Romney reminds me of an elitist used-car salesman. As far as his family goes, why are his five sons too good to serve in the military?

  10. Badmoodman Says:

As for the photo of Romney’s family, which of the kids is in the closet?

“He’s got what all Americans want in the White House — which is an all-American family.”

Really? I think on my list of important qualifications for a President the “all-Americanness” of his/her family falls somewhere between prefers boxers over briefs and puts ketchup, mustard, and relish on hot dogs.

  21. Engr Tony Says:

    #16 - I agree.

Looking at that Romney family photograph with all of his sons and not one of them willing to serve in uniform in this nation’s armed forces. But Mitt is so willing to keep our troops over in Iraq indefinitely.

  22. McWars Says:

I’d say that Romney has too many sons. (Not enough venture capitalists to go around?)

  23. IgnoranceIsNotBliss Says:

Uh, Romney’s family looks pretty repressed to me.

  29. McWars Says:

I’m sure Obama will be prepared for the Republican hate machine if he’s the nominee. He was already spot on when he noted they can’t campaign on the past.

  32. Juan C. Says:

Romeny’s family portrait seems like a Blockbuster staff reunion.

  33. PatrioticLiberalChristian Says:

It’s not important what voters think of the candidates’ families. What is important is how the candidates think of American families (or those, like gay couples who want to be families) and what their plans are for those families in their vision of government.

Romney’s family is, indeed, attractive. So, let them go into modeling.

  34. PeterW Says:

Apparently Republicans want some sort of Bronze-age notion of a ritually perfect king. Maybe it’s because they’re afraid that their gods will be angry if their king has any sort of ritual blemish.

  40. tarazan Says:

The only difference between Romney and McCain, is who might pull the trigger faster, and get us in a big war again.
McCain in my opinion will be faster..other than that.
    both love Reagan,
both will support Israel right or wrong,
both will select a conservative Judges.
both will always remember and repay their financial backers.
Both will put us in another war..soon…
but McCain with heavy support of Neocons and his love for wars will beat Romeny on this one.
both have no clue about how to solve the average Americans economic, health, education and all other on hand and existing problems.

Matalin talks about this contest as if it is a beauty contest.
How sad, that the media wants her opinion . Why not bring someone with brains… please ?!!

  41. Peter C Says:

We need to take the microphone away from these people and give them back their oranage crate to stand on. They do nothing with it but spread bad-feeling.

    Mormonism is the ‘future’ ?

    Of what ?

  43. gummitch Says:

I started to watch Meet The Press this past Sunday and when Blowhard Russert brought out Matalin and Carville for their “expert” BS I had to turn the channel. Matalin and Carville are the epitomy of Washington politics as usual. I can’t stand either one of them. Especially Carville who is no more a true Democrat than his wife Matalin. Ewwwwwwwwwwwww…..

  48. Juan C. Says:

Now, McCain’s family? portrait has a black kid at the left. Do they adopt him? Cause somebody is fooling around if they don’t.

Why do these scions of privilege run on their cute, folksy nicknames instead of the names that brought them vast wealth?

I really do want Romney tobe the Repub candidate—because as we head into a recession, another scion of a privileged family is going to go over so well.

  55. MCMetal Says:

  56. Cats r Flyfishn Says:

So is Matlin accusing Barack Obama of NOT having an all American family? Matlin must only know lily white and, btw, if she wants to appear “All American” then she better bleach her hair blond. Nah, Matalin is just stretching her in her efforts to insult the other nominees. I understand, you’re easily confused, happy to help, you’re welcome.

besides, that picture of Romney’s family is not THAT “all-American.” Where’s the dog?

    Oh…that’s right…

  76. Cats r Flyfishn Says:

And btw… I believe February is Black History month. Research “Shirley Chisholm”. She was the first female candidate to run for president and received 151 votes at the 1972 Democratic Convention. Shirley was also African American and a co-founder of the Congressional Black Caucus and the National Organization for Women. Mad Mary Matlin should be thanking Shirley Chisholm for her job. Prior to the 60’s, women were to be seen and not heard. No one cared about a woman’s opinion. Some women should still not be heard, such as mad Matlin and crazy Coulter, and no one wants to look at their angry, sour faces. YUK!

  77. Zimzone Says:

Romney’s Sons are cloned…look at the pic. Either that, or fertility drugs & Mormonism go hand in hand. It’s a litter!

Speaking of litter, will Matalin’s head explode, too? Coultergeist?

We could make the Super Bowl look like a sideshow if we could get all those heads exploding on camera.

  78. MCMetal Says:

    BTW

I suppose it makes sense that a woman who has had so many plastic surgeries (like Matalin) , and is looking more worked on than a custom built automobile , would be so enthralled with Shitt Conme ; someone who looks like a mannequin , and possesses even less brains than one………..

  81. BillinChicago Says:

I think you’re leaping to conclusions here. In my opinion, this probably has more to do with the newfound affinity of Republicans for candyass fa@@ots. After all, McCain has a son serving in Iraq. Whereas Romney has five little pansies who haven’t served a day in their lives in the (real) military, just like our beloved President and Vice President. Instead, they’re “serving their country” by driving a Winnebago around Iowa. That’s the new Republican standard for moral courage, it seems.

And it’s probably not a coincidence that pathetic chickenhawks like Limbaugh hate McCain so much. It’ll be interesting to see if the Republican convention goers wear those disgraceful Purple Heart bandages again this year . . . this time against their own candidate.

  82. bernard quatermass Says:

“And it’s probably not a coincidence that pathetic chickenhawks like Limbaugh hate McCain so much.”

You know, I never served in the military myself. Thought about it once when I was a teenager, but it didn’t gel at the time. But of all the things that offend me about “the other side,” the thing that may offend me the MOST is what they seem to like to do to people who actually DID serve (Max Cleland, et al). It is so far beyond disgusting that I actually find it difficult to discuss at all.

I thought that every American should spend from age 18 - 20 in the service of their country in some form or another, no deferments allowed, even the handicaped (within reason here), but the Bush Administration with his crimes and corruption and illegal wars of aggression has changed my mind about that one.

  86. Uncle Ho Says:

Buckie; I think anyone who goes into the service today is several cards short of a full deck. With stop-loss, they can keep you in and keep sending you back to Iraq forever. Keep everyone in the combat zone until nearly all are dead/disabled(physically or mentally).

They got me via the draft.

  87. moondancer Says:

Romney wins the “family with largest quantity of chickenhawks”, nothing else.

  88. The Shadow Says:

Of course John McCain doesn’t have an all American family, he has an adopted Black kid. Only whites need apply for residency at the white house, don’t you guys know that. This twit opened her piehole and less the biggoted remarks out because she doesn’t see anything wrong with that statement. How is Mitt Romney’s family any better than anyones else’s family. They aren’t, they are just a bunch of lucky rich people, born with a silver spoon. They shouldn’t be given any more special privileges other than being white and rich. I mean come on how stupid can the Republicans be. Under her way of thinking the Obama’s don’t belong anywhere near the white house. They aren’t white and rich.

  89. The Shadow Says:

If Romney’s boys are such all Americans why aren’t those cowards serving in Iraq? They might get hurt or god forbid kill in action. They love their country, but not that much right. Why do you think pretty boy Romney didn’t go to Viet Nam, because he’s a COWARD. I wouldn’t vote for McCain to save my life, but he’s a HERO.

  90. Buckie Boy Says:

Matalin could be wrong on this one.

She says, ” Romney Has ‘What All Americans Want In The White House – Which Is An All-American Family’ .”

First, I’m American and I don’t want Romney in their.

Second, If Romney was an all aAmerican family. Wouldn’t at least one of his sons be fighting in Iraq and/or Afganistan?

I’m not voting for a family, I’m voting for a President. His family is a much lower issue.

Besides, just think how much money Romney’s kids will cost the taxpayers with travel, secret service, feeding them,

    their health care..!
